"Don't go look at me with that look in your eye
You really ain't going away without a fight
You can't be reasoned with, I'm done being polite
I've told you one, two, three, four,
five, six thousand times.
Haven't I made it obvious? Haven't I made it clear? Want me to spell it out for you? F-R-I-E-N-D-S" ~Anne Marie
3rd Person's POV
After school later, Peter skates home and immediately gets stopped by his aunt. As soon as Aunt May hears the door she turns around to see Peter with a black eye.
She gasps and points referring to his beat up looking face, "Oh, my God! What happened to your face?"
Peter waves her off with his hand, "Oh, I'm alright. I just... I fell, skating. It's alright."
Peter's uncle walks into the kitchen carrying an looking box. He glances over at Peter and frowns.
"What happened to you?" Before Peter can answer Ben looks over at May, "What happened to him?"
Aunt May shrugs, "He fell. Why you kids ride those things, I'll never know."
Uncle Ben chuckles, "Cause it's stupid and dangerous. Remember when we were stupid and dangerous?"
"No."
Ben kisses May's cheek, "Trust me, we were."
"Good to know." Peter questions referring to his uncle's rolled up trousers and bare feet, "Hey, where's the flood?"
"Follow me, I'll show you."
"You serious?"
"Yes!"
Peter follows his uncle to the basement. In the basement, showing Peter the flood.
"I think it's a condenser tray."
Peter shakes his head, "No, too much water for the condenser tray or the heat exchange tubing. This has gotta be the filling."
"That's the only thing that makes sense then. Can you fix it?"
Peter frowns, "No, not tonight. I'll go by the hardware store tomorrow."
Uncle Ben nods, "Good deal. Meanwhile, put this on your face."
He give Peter an ice pack, "How does the other guy look?"
Peter doesn't reply.
Ben sighs, "I wouldn't tell your Aunt May. I'd pity the poor kid who'd have to suffer her wrath."
Peter's uncle starts going back upstairs, "Hey, before you come up, see if there's anything else worth saving."
"Yeah."
As Peter looks around the basement, he notices a leather briefcase that belonged to his father and takes it. After finding his father's briefcase, he takes it to his room. He examines the briefcase further and finds a secret pocket that contains a folder of his fatherΓ’β¬β’s equations, the main equation is marked with the symbol of two zeros crossed with diagonal lines.
"What is this?"
"What's what?"
Peter jumps and looks over at the girl standing in his room.
"What are you doing here?"
"Really you have to ask. I'm always here."
Peter rolls his eyes, "True. Hold on..."
The girl sits on his bed while he stands reading from the notes in the file, "Zero, zero, Decay Rate Algorithm."
There's a knock on his bedroom door which makes him jump.
"Yeah, one sec! One sec!"
He glances over at the girl making her roll her eyes, get down and hide on the other side of his bed. Peter quickly hides the briefcase and unlocks his door.
"Come in."
Uncle Ben slowly opens the door, "You okay?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
Ben smiles referring to Peter's father, "Oh, my God! You look just like him."
Peter takes off his glasses.
"Listen, um... I don't have much education, you know, Peter. Hell, I stopped being able to help with your homework when you were ten. What I'm trying to say is, I know it's been rough for you without your dad. And I know we don't talk much about them."
Peter nods uncomfortably, "Yeah, it's fine."
"No, it is not alright. I wish I could change it, but I can't." Ben sighs before turning to see a photo of Gwen that Peter had on his computer screen.
"She's pretty."
Ben chuckles as Peter ruffles his hair. Ben is about to leave Peter's room until Peter stops him.
"Uncle Ben?"
"Yeah?"
"You're a pretty great dad, alright?"
Ben smiles and nods then looks at the open window. He smirks and scans the room to see a jacket on Peter's desk.
"Mila you do know we have a door? You don't have to come through the window all the time."
Mila pops her head out from her hiding spot beside the bed. Smiling she sits beside Peter as his cheeks redden.
"I know but it's way too much fun."
"Alright I won't hold it against ya." Ben holds both hands up in the air.
Mila makes a serious face pointing at him, "You better not."
Peter chuckles and shakes his head, "You two are weird."
Ben goes to close the door but is stopped by a voice yelling at him from downstairs.
"Ben can you ask Mila if she's staying for dinner?"
Ben turns with a smile to see the two teens with confused faces.
"May knows and hears everything."
Mila glances over at Peter with wide eyes and a smile before looking back at Ben, "Duly noted. Yeah sure I'll stay."
Ben nods then finally leaves the two alone. Mila sighs before falling back into Peters bed. She stares at the ceiling as Peter sits staring at her.
"You know you don't have to help me with Flash. I'm sure your... boyfriend hates that."
Mila quickly sits up cross crossing her legs and then stares at Peter. He frowns as she lifts up her hand and flicks his forehead.
"Uh ow? What the heck Rory?"
"Pete first of all he's not my boyfriend. As bad as he wants to be, he will never be. Second of all, you're my friend... my best friend. I will always be by your side no matter who it is against you."
Peter smiles sheepishly as Mila laughs at him.
"Thanks Ror."
"Of course Peter."
Mila pecks his cheek then lays back down and starts to scroll through Instagram not noticing Peter's reaction to the kiss. Meanwhile, Peter is internally freaking out. As much as he knew how gorgeous his best friend was, he also knew there was no way he would ever in a million years have a chance with her.
He used to have the biggest crush on her but growing up seeing all the guys she went out with made him feel discouraged and eventually he gave up on his feelings. Now he was currently spending his time staring at the schools Student Body President and Valedictorian, Gwen Stacey.
"Hey Pete can you help me with my Calc homework?"
Peter nods and grabs Mila's book bag from beside his bed. This was a routine that they usually had. Everyday Mila would come to his house to hang out with him and they would do homework or watch a movie.
As they do their homework, Peter can't help but stare at Mila. She always would stick her tongue out slightly as she concentrated. He couldn't help but notice the small things about her, like all the light freckles that sprinkled across her nose only. Or her deep dimples that showed regardless of her smiling or not. Her brown eyes that sometimes appeared more honey in sunlight.
Shaking his head, Peter pulls himself out his thoughts and stops staring at Mila before she thinks he's a creep.
"Dinner's ready!!"
Mila jumps up in joy, pulling Peter along. The two race down the stairs trying to beat one another to the table. The run past the kitchen door just as it opens making Aunt May stumble backwards.
"Woah slow down you two."
"I can get that for you May."
Mila grabs the bowl of mashed potatoes from Aunt May and carefully walks to the table and places it down nicely. She then sits beside Uncle Ben and starts to talk to him. May looks over at Peter who's still standing beside her and smiles.
"So... when did Mila get here?"
"Aunt May..." Peter whines trying his hardest not to blush, "We're just friends."
"Mhmm that's what they all say. And for now anyways."
May makes a sassy face and prances off to the table with the others at Peter chuckles to himself. Finally Peter sits down beside May across from Uncle Ben and they dig in. As the night goes on, Aunt May asks Mila about how her family was doing.
Mila instantly freezes holding a spoon of corn in the air. She smiles uncomfortably but quickly hides it hoping no one noticed. Unfortunately Peter does.
He knew that Mila didn't really love talking about her family situation. As much as she was grateful and happy with her adopted family, she really wished for her own parents to still be in the picture. That's one of the reasons Peter and Mila were really good friends. They understood each other. Both were adopted into a different living situation that they had to get used to. At least with Peter he moved with his Aunt and Uncle, Mila had strangers.
Peter frowns as he thinks about Mila's adopted family. She rarely talked about them and he had never seen them. Actually now that he thought about it, he never went to her house. She would always come over to his or they would hang out outside his house and do something. He didn't even know the names of her family. But he didn't want to pry and make her feel uncomfortable, plus it wasn't important so he never asked.
"Oh um they're doing fine. Great... my um adoptive sister has a pretty cool internship at Oscorp so everyone's excited for her. Um adoptive brother is already getting some letters from schools for his baseball scholarship. Younger bro's are pretty annoying, they prank a lot around the house but I will admit they're pretty good. The adoptive parents also just got back from their anniversary vacation all pretty and tanned so everyone is good!!"
"Well that's fantastic. I'm glad everyone's doing well. How are you doing? How's school?"
"Aunt May I'm sure Rory doesn't want to sit here and talk about that prison."
May smacks Peter's hand with a spoon making Mila laugh.
"It's fine Peter. School's going good. It's fall season which means football season, so as cheer captain I have my work cut out for me. I have to plan a pep rally but that should be fun. I'm trying out for the school play again."
"Oh yay! I can't wait to hear what they're doing and what part you'll get!! You always do so well!!"
"Thanks so much."
Mila laughs as Peter digs his face into his hands in embarrassment. Uncle Ben chuckles and taps May's hand nodding in the direction of the kitchen door.
"You two go on upstairs. Ben and I will clean this up. I think I'll make some cookies too."
"No no no May that's not necessary. You do not have to do that."
"Oh honey please I know you love your sweets and I love making them since Peter here thrives off of rabbit food."
Peter's mouth falls open in disbelief, "Aunt May!"
"Get him May!"
"Rory!" Peter couldn't believe the two were ganging up on him. He glances over at Uncle Ben who shakes his head, holding his hands up.
"I'm not going to be put in the middle this time. Plus I want some too."
Aunt May smiles as her and Ben grab the dishes and disappear into the kitchen. Peter groans and pulls Mila's arm, guiding her back upstairs.
"Wanna go to the fire escape?"
Mila nods and follows as Peter walks through his room to his window. He pushes open the window and then climbs out onto the roofed fire escape where the two had placed tons of blankets and pillows. They liked to sit out sometimes and watch the sunset.
"Sorry about Aunt May. I've told her so many times that you don't like talked about your adoptive family."
Mila shrugs with a sad smile, "It's okay Peter. I promise. And I promise eventually I'll become comfortable enough to let you in on everything there is to know about them."
"Take your time. I don't care about them, I just care about you. You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to."
Mila nods and grabs Peter's hand, "Thanks Pete."
"Of course Ror..."
Aunt May finished with the cookies and took them upstairs to the two. They stayed outside and played a game of I spy. As time passes on, they sit and watch the sun begin to set. Peter jumps slightly as he feels Mila's head fall onto his shoulder. He glances down to see her eyes closed and her mouth slightly open as she snores lightly. He chuckles as he continues to stare her down. She was cute when she slept. Her little snores sounded like kitten purrs.
Peter kisses her forehead leans back into the pillows more allowing Mila's body to lay against his. She sighs inaudibly and cuddles into him more making him smile.
"You will be the end of me Mila Rory."
