16: Superman Got Nothing On Me
"I'm only one call away
I'll be there to save the day
Superman got nothing on me
I'm only one call away."
~ Charlie Puth
3rd Person's POV
Mila decides to go to Oscorp and figure out what the heck Peter was working on with Curt Conners. She wanted to find out why he spent all his time there and what they were doing.
She scans her name tag and then makes her way to the elevator. As she gets to the lab floor she quickly peeks her head out, looking both ways before quietly exiting the elevator. She bites her lip looking around at the empty hall as she tiptoes through.
Freezing as she hears voices, she realizes that Dr Connors had been speaking with the man that Peter ran into the day they snuck into Oscorp.
"Rajit... The Cross-species genetics is finally working. I've used lizard DNA to help Freddie regrow that limb."
"It's a miracle."
Mila frowns moving closer to the open footing but staying hidden along the opaque glass.
"No, it's hard work and a promise, and it's a step closer to the primate lab."
"Ah, but he doesn't have time for every little step."
"Little?" Dr Connors sounded very offended.
"I just mean he can't wait."
"Well, he'll have to. Unless he wants to be a lab rat." Connors bites back.
Mila's eyebrows furrow in question. She had never seen Dr Connors so irritated.
"That's not what I'm saying."
"So what are you saying?"
Rajit leans back in his chair with his hands together on his lap, "You have to start human trials, now."
Do Connors eyes widen with fear, "No, I don't. And no, I won't."
"Well, then he's going to die."
"People die, even Norman Osborn."
Covering her hand over her mouth as she feels herself gasp, Mila can't help but think of Norman Osborn. She definitely knew who that was and she wondered how the heck he was involved and why he needed the cross species genetics trial to work now.
"We are not finished."
"Human trials? Where on earth are you gonna find the people to volunteer?"
Rajit shrugs looking nonchalant, "The wards, as far as anyone's concerned, it's for a winter flu shot. I might think that veterans hospitals a place to start."
"You gotta be kidding me?"
"I don't think I am."
Connors turns to leave, but Ratha stops him by holding his amputated arm.
"It's a little late for shock and indignation, Curt. About fifteen years late."
Connors looks away from him, "I've no idea what you're talking about?"
"Richard Parker wore it well. On you, it's a cheap suit, as it was then."
Mila bites her lip as her nails dig into her palm.
"I have nothing to do with that."
Rajit chuckles, "Is that what you told his son, Peter?"
"I don't know what you're saying."
"You don't know, or you don't wanna know?"
Mila quickly ducks down as Rajit speeds out the room paying her no attention as he taps buttons on his cell phone. She peeks back through the glance watching Connors sigh and walk over to his mouse.
Conners looks at the serum before shooting himself and falling on the table in pain. She covers her mouth as she lets out a light gasp.
What the hell is going on?
"Excuse me Miss."
Mila jumps as Dr Conners raises his head up in her direction. She quickly hides behind the wall and sees security coming near her.
"Miss you can't be in here at this time. Please make your way back to the lobby."
"Right my apologies."
The security guard nods and holds out his arm as if leading her down the hallway. She smiles lightly and starts to make her way down the hall. Glancing behind her she sees Dr Conners slightly glaring at her, she quickly turns around and sprints down the hallway.
Making her way to the elevator, Mila quickly texts Phil telling him she was on the way home but would be taking a taxi.
As she sits in the taxi, she tries to figure out what she just saw. She didn't know Oscorp did human trials and she didn't know why. But all she knew was that whatever Dr Conners was working on it didn't sound very good.
Mila sighs as she looks out the front windshield to see blocked traffic.
"Sorry Miss seems like there's some bad traffic right now."
"It's okay. I have no where important to be at the moment anyway."
...
After the awkward family dinner, Gwen talks to her dad as they both scold each other then she takes Peter to the roof.
"Well, that was something."
Peter frowns and points referring to her dad, "I'm sorry. I thought he was gonna arrest me at one point."
Gwen smiles shaking her head, "Nah, I wouldn't have let him arrest you. What happened to your face?"
Peter huffs and runs his hands through his hair, "I wanna tell you something... well need to."
"Oh! Okay." Gwen smiles widely holding her hands together behind her back.
"I've been bitten."
"So have I."
Gwen gets closer to Peter, but Peter backs off and paces around making Gwen frown.
"Okay. Okay. Okay. I gotta tell you this one thing. I gotta tell you this one thing. It's about the vigilante and the car thief, alright?"
Gwen looks disappointed, "Oh! Okay."
Gwen thinks that he wants to talk about her dad. Peter shakes his head holding up his hands. He didn't want her to think that he didn't like her... because he obviously did. But he felt like because of her dad and how close they were becoming that he needed to let her know what was going on.
"No! No! I don't wanna talk about your dad, I wanna talk about me. Okay?"
"What about you?"
"I... I wish I could just... I can't! It's hard to say."
Peter tugs his hair lightly as he continues to pace around. There was no way he could tell Gwen. If he felt like he would put Mila in danger there's no way Gwen wouldn't be in danger as well. If anything at this point in time he was already losing Mila and he would only keep her safe by not telling her who he was. But with Gwen she worked at Oscorp and if anything happened to her because he didn't tell her, he would feel like a complete ass.
Gwen sighs putting her hand on Peter's shoulder making him freeze, "Just say."
"No... No."
"Say it."
Peter tries to find the right words to say to tell her the truth about himself.
"What? What?" Gwen frowns as he looks at her, "What?"
Peter shakes his head as he can't find the right words, Gwen frustrated, turns and starts to walk off. She gets to the door and grabs the handle making Peter groan. He quickly stops her with his web-shooter. A web flies and hits the window right by her head making her halt. She gasps and lets go of the door before turning back to Peter. The two stare into each other's eyes as they slowly make their way to one another. Gwen realizes who he is just as she pulls Peter in to kiss her. The two jump apart as they hear police sirens.
Peter smiled sheepishly, "I gotta go..."
Gwen nods out of breath watching as Peter jumps off the balcony to catch up with the cop cars.
Gwen touches her lips looking at Peter swing away through the buildings, "I'm in trouble."
....
Back on the bridge, Mila sits listening to music as she waits in the long line of traffic. She frowns hearing her taxi driver open the door.
"Hello?"
Looking up, she sees the driver running through the middle of all the traffic. Mila rips off her headphones to see a large group of people running. Sliding over to the door she goes to open it but it's locked. She tries to unlock it but the door was on child lock. Sliding to the right side of the car, she pushes open the door but realizes it's caught in between the bride walls. She freezes as she hears loud stomps and smashing.
"What the?"
Glancing in the rear view window behind her, she sees a huge lizard making its way to the taxi she was in. Covering her mouth, she sinks down into the seat.
She feels the car move slightly as the lizard pushes it to the side. Mila quickly slides the barrier window open and starts to slip her body through but freezes when she sees the lizard looking into the taxi.
She screams as the lizard picks up the car and throws it off the bridge. She grips tightly onto the seats as she feels the taxi catch onto something. She looks through the windshield and sees a spider web attached to the front bumper holding the car attached to the bridge. Letting out a huge breath, Mila smiles.
"Spiderman."
...
After Peter had found the Lizard that caused havoc on the bridge, he catches all the cars it throws off. Hearing screaming, he swings over to a minivan. Inside is a small boy trapped in one of the suspended cars.
"Dad! Dad!"
"Hey buddy it's okay."
"Go away!!"
Peter holds his hands up, "It's alright."
"Help!!"
"Hey look," Peter takes off his Spiderman mask, "I'm just a normal guy... alright?"
The boy looks at Peter and sees he was indeed a normal looking guy. He calms down slightly looking from Peter and the mask.
"Wanna hold onto this? Here hold my mask."
Peter tosses the mask to the boy. The boy smiles lightly and holds the mask.
"Alright. What's your name?" Peter looks around and sees the boys book bag with a name tag on it, "Jack?"
Jack looks up at him in surprise, "Yes..."
"Alright Jack let's get you out of here. Stay very still."
"Alright."
Peter climbs into the car slowly and makes his way to Jack, "Okay I gotcha. Okay now look I'm gonna undo the belt. You're gonna hold onto that seat in front of you, okay?"
"Alright." Jack holds his hands out in front of him.
"Okay one... two... three." Peter clicks the seat belt making Jack fall onto the seat in front of him.
"See how easy that was. You did a great job."
Peter's head snaps to the side as he hears glass crack and flames engulf around the car. The fire breaks the web making Peter hold up his arm to shoot a web to the bridge. He holds onto the bumper of the van while dangling from the web.
"Jack, climb, now!"
Jack shakes his head with tears in his eyes, "I can't!"
"Yes, you can!" Peter struggles to hold onto the car, "Put... put it on! The mask! It's gonna make you strong."
Mila looks around the taxi trying to figure out the best way to escape. She groans and punches the seat in anger.
"Why the hell does this keep happening?"
She glances to the side then quickly snaps her head back to the right as she sees a car engulfed in flames four cars down. She sees Spider-Man's figure as a blur but notices he's struggling to hold the car.
"Oh shit."
...
Jack looks at Peter's mask which he'd taken off and given to him earlier.
"Jack, trust me. Put it on. It's gonna make you strong."
Jack puts on the mask.
"There you go! That's it! That's it, buddy! That's it. Okay, now, climb! Come on, Jack!"
Jack starts to slowly climb towards Peter.
"Do me a favor, a little faster. Okay, bud? You're doing great, buddy. You're doing great! That's it, keep coming. Keep it coming."
Just as Jack gets closer to Peter, he reaches out his hand towards Peter, but the car suddenly drops.
"No!"
Peter quickly catches the boy mid-fall with a web shot and pulls him to safety. He gives Jack to his father who quickly embraced his child. The father looks at the now masked Peter in shock.
"Who are you?"
"Spider-Man."
...
Mila curses as she watches Spiderman disappear with a kid.
"Hello?!"
"Hey."
Mila screams as she looks up to see Spiderman crouched on top of the hood of the taxi.
"Oh it's just you."
"We've really gotta stop meeting like this."
Mila rolls her eyes, "It's not my fault."
Spiderman chuckles, "Hmm you're a trouble magnet so I would say yes it is."
"Whatever. Can you help me out now? I'd prefer to not die in the bottom of the ocean."
Peter rolls his eyes at the sassy girl and makes his way into the taxi. He holds his arm through the barrier window.
"Come on I got you."
Mila gulps slightly and grabs her purse. She throws the crossbody over her shoulder and then slowly moves out the seat. She reaches her arm up and grips onto Spiderman's hand. Without hesitation he lifts her up through the window and then shoots out a web swinging them away from the bridge.
Mila holds onto Spiderman tightly as he swings through the city. She glances at his mask and wonders who the heck this guy was.
"Why do you hide behind that mask?"
Spiderman glances at her as he continues to shoot webs out and swing through New York, "Uh don't all superhero's have secret identities?"
Mila frowns listening to his voice. It sounded somewhat familiar but she just couldn't point out where. The guy's voice sounded slightly deeper than it probably was... like he was straining his voice.
"Well I mean yeah sure they do but... here's an example Clark Kent. He hid behind glasses, not very secret because you could still see his face and know exactly who he was. Not very smart if you ask me but that was his secret identity."
"I don't know... I just would rather not be the center of attention."
"You mean your real self... not your Spiderman self?"
"Yeah."
Mila nods and looks away from him. There was something about him. Something that felt familiar, or close... something that felt friendly to her. She felt safe with him, she felt like she had known exactly who it was but she hadn't the slightest clue.
"Here we are."
Spiderman drops to the ground and steadies Mila as she stands up straight. She looks at her apartment building and frowns.
"How did you-"
Tilting her head in confusion she turns back to Spiderman but he's gone.
"Weird."
