13: Ain't No Telling What We Could've Been

"Look what this girl done did to me,
She done cut me off from a good, good love.
She told me that those days were gone.
Now I'm sitting here going half crazy,
'Cause I know she still thinks about me too,
And there ain't no way in hell, that I can be just friends with you."
~ Trey Songz

3rd Person's POV

"So you finally decided to show up? For real this time?"

Mila spins around to see Gwen walking up to her with a smile. Gwen pulls Mila into a hug then hands her a lanyard.

Mila grabs the lanyard with her name on it and puts it over her head, "Yeah I thought it was time to stop hiding behind my looks."

Gwen nods, "Good! Finally I always wondered why you signed up for tutoring. You can literally recite the fundamental equation of thermodynamics in your sleep."

Mila rolls her eyes and follows Gwen as they walk throughout Oscorp, "Yeah yeah."

Mila quickly sucks as she sees Peter talking to Dr Connors. Gwen frowns in confusion looking at her sister on the ground.

"Uh what are you doing?"

"Um nothing. I thought I saw something."

"I'm just going to stop asking questions from now on. Come on I'll give you a tour around."

Peter pauses as he talks to Dr Connors. He sees Gwen wall by and he swears he saw Mila too. But what would she be doing at Oscorp. He needed to talk to her, and he hoped she would let him at school tomorrow.

...

"Mila!"

Mila speeds through the hallway and hurries into the library.

"Mila please wait."

She closes the library doors before hurrying through an aisle of books. She goes to a table in the corner and sits down, propping her book up to cover her face.

She waits a moment hoping that the person she was running from hadn't found her. Then she sighs sadly as she hears a bag drop on the table. The book falls as the person drags her chair closer to them.

"Rory..."

Mila looks up and frowns, "Parker..."

Peter frowns and takes Mila's hand into his. He making a pleading motion with his hands while shaking hers and giving her the puppy dog eyes, "Ror I'm sorry. Please I'm not avoiding you. If anything you're avoiding me..."

"No I'm not."

Peter's eyes widen as he stares at her in shock, "You just ran around the whole school. Just now... you did that. And you hid... granted you chose the worst place to hide because you know I love the library."

Mila shrugs with a yeah you're right expression on her face, "Well you found me so what do you want?"

Peter takes two tickets out his pocket and waves them in the air. He smiles as he watches Mila's eyes sparkle.

"Are those what I think they are?"

Peter nods, "Two tickets to your favorite play-"

"You didn't..."

"I did-"

Before Peter can say anything else, Mila launches herself into his arms. She hugs him tightly and smiles so wide that her cheeks start to hurt. Peter grins and hugs her back.

"Thanks Peter."

"Of course. So the play is at 8, why don't we go to your favorite place for food and then we can go to the play."

Mila's eyes gleam as she looks at Peter in question, "Really? Are you sure?"

Peter nods, "Definitely. You got me for the day."

"Okay!" Mila jumps in her seat in excitement making Peter laugh.

The two sit and chat a little bit more before the bell rings. They leave the library and go to their separate classes. After school is over, Mila and Phil head home and Gwen heads to Oscorp for her internship.

Mila gets dressed and puts on a little bit of makeup before standing in the mirror looking at herself.

Perfect.

She grabs her phone and sees that Gwen had texted her.

'Hey tell mom I can't make dinner so not to wait up on me.'

'Everything okay?'

'Oh yeah definitely... just bumped into someone and they need help with some lab stuff.'

'Okay have fun.'

Mila shrugs grabbing her purse and running to Phillip's room. She knocks on the door and waits for him to answer. Within seconds, Phillip opens the door and looks down at Mila in question.

"Hey Phil can you give me a ride to Mcallister's?"

"Sure I guess I was headed to Cora's, that's on the way."

"Ew and okay."

"Ew? Why ew?" Phillip says as he grabs his jacket and keys.

Mila laughs as she skips down the stairs, "I don't wanna know anything about you and my bestie."

"I wasn't gonna say anything gross. You just have a dirty mind."

Mila stops and shrugs before laughing, agreeing with him. Phillip shakes his head and unlocks his car then they both hop inside. It only takes five minutes for them to get to the restaurant which makes Mila smile in excitement. As soon as the car stops she looks at her phone which reads 6pm. She didn't have any messages or calls from Peter but she wasn't fazed.

"Thanks Phil."

Mila jumps out the SUV and closes the door. She goes to leave but stops when Phil beeps the horn.

Looking back at him with an annoyed stare she replies, "Yes?"

Phil smirks and taps his hand on the steering wheel, "Forgot to tell you. You look nice..."

Mila frowns and looks down at her outfit. She was wearing a dress dress with white converse. Her hair was curled beautifully; she as glowing. Phil points at her with a wide grin.

"Is that for Peter?"

Mila scoffs while looking at the restaurant, "Peter? Really? God no... also I always look nice."

Phil shrugs, "Yeah but you're wearing makeup."

Mila rolls her eyes making Phillip laugh.

"You can go now. At anytime."

Phillip nods then tells her to have fun before he speeds off. Mila sighs then tries to compose herself as she feels butterflies twist and turn in her stomach. Her and Peter had always gone out to eat together so this was nothing new. But she really wanted to show him in some way that she was interested in him. Maybe today would be the day where he finally finds out that Mila Rory Stacy has a huge crush on him.

Mila walks into the restaurant and is seated near the window. She watches as car by car speeds by the window and time goes on and on. Grabbing her phone off the table she sees that two hours have gone by.

"Ma'am I'm sorry but we're closing..."

Mila starts to tear up as she continues to look out the window. She nods and listens as the waiter walks away. Turning back to the table she sees a bag that had her food inside with a small note taped on it.

'Sorry your date didn't show honey. This is on the house.'

Sighing, Mila grabs the bag and walks out he restaurant.

Maybe he's running late. The theater isn't far from here. Maybe once I get there he'll be there with the tickets.

Mila nods at her conscience and starts to walk down the street. It only takes her two minutes to get to the theater. She walks up to the booth and looks around but doesn't see Peter.

"Hi excuse me... was there a guy around here named Peter looking for a girl named Mila?"

The woman in the booth shakes her head, "Sorry hun the only people who have showed up to this booth have been me and you."

Mila frowns then says thank you. She sits on the curb and calls Peter.

No answer.

Licking her lips, she looks down the street and sees that it's empty on both sides. No cars driving around and no people walking on the sidewalk either.

"So this is how it feels..."

Mila whispers to herself as she thinks about how she had believed everyone was so dramatic when they talked about their dates not showing. She used to think, 'that rarely happens and even if it did I'm sure it doesn't even hurt that bad. Like you can go home and enjoy the rest of your night drama free. Screw them if they stood you up then they don't give a shit about you, and you can just toss them to the side.' But now thinking about it, Peter was her best friend... he had never stood her up before... she liked him a lot... she couldn't just say screw him and be okay.

...

Gwen laughs as she watches Peter balance a pencil on his nose.

"Impressive."

Peter chuckles, "Alright break over. Back to this equation..."

Gwen tunes him out as she stares at him. She was starting to like him. Before she definitely would've said they were just friends, but she really wanted to take a leap and see where this went.

Frowning, she comes out her daydream when she sees her phone light up.

"One second."

Peter stops talking and watches Gwen answer the phone.

"Hey what's up... No I haven't heard from her... you think somethings wrong?... I'm at Oscorp still... no I'm not the only one here Phillip... uhhh yes he's here why?... okay you're being weird bye."

Gwen frowns then hangs up. Peter gives her a questioning look as she starts to write on her paper.

"What happened? Everything okay?"

Gwen nods with a smile, "Yeah I think so. Phillip was just acting weird. He was asking me so many questions but he wouldn't tell me what he was talking about."

"Oh that's weird..."

"Yeah... hey do you have any gum?"

"Yeah I think so hold on."

Peter sticks his hand in his pocket then freezes. His heart drops as he grabs onto the paper and pulls out two tickets.

"Oh no..."

Gwen looks over at him and frowns, "What's wrong?"

"Gwen I gotta go."

Gwen's frown deepens as she watches Peter clumsily stuff all his things into his backpack. She watches him take his skateboard and run out the room without another word.

"Um okay bye..."

...

Peter frowns as he stands looking at the dimly lit theater. He looks at his watch and groans. It was now 10 o'clock. He jumps slightly as he hears keys jingle. An older lady walks out the booth and locks the doors. Peter cautiously walks over to her and tries not to scare her.

"Uh hi... hey um excuse me have you um seen this girl. Her name is-"

"Mila?" The woman looks at him warily.

"Yes! Was she here? Is she still here?"

The woman frowns with a nod before crossing her arms and glaring at Peter, "Well you must be Peter... Sorry hun but she left a while ago. Sat out here for lord knows how long until I told her to go home. It's gonna take some long and hard groveling to get her to forgive you son."

Peter bites his lip and throw his head back while rubbing his temples.

"I'm an idiot."

"Most men are."

Peter sighs as the lady leaves then he pulls out his phone and sees that Mila had called him two times and texted him five.

'Hey Petey boy you okay? I'm about to order.'

'Pete are you on the way yet?'

'I'm no mathematician but it's 7:50 which means that there's only ten minutes to grub up then it's play time.'

'I'm at the theater if you care.'

'Thanks for a great night.'

Peter swears then calls Mila. Unsurprisingly, she doesn't pick up. He tries once more and still gets the same thing... no answer.

He felt awful. He was a total jack ass. And there was no way to try to talk to her because he had no idea where she lived. There was nothing he could do but wait until school tomorrow.

Peter skateboards home and walks into the house to see Aunt May sitting by the tv with a bag on the table in front of her. Peter stops seeing May's red eyes and sad face. He drops onto the couch beside her and opens his mouth to speak but she stops him.

"You know Peter... you can't lose me because I'm family. I'll always be there... but you can lose her. And pretty soon you will if you keep this up."

Aunt May grabs the bag and drops it into Peter's lap then she stands up. She goes to leave the living room but says one more thing before she disappears.

"I'm very disappointed in you."

Peter sighs as he stares at the bag. He reads the note on the bag from the waiter and feels even worse... if that was even possible. Opening the bag he sees that it's spaghetti and meatballs... his favorite food.
