Episode 6: Dosed

         Adalynn sat on the couch While Taylor sat across from her, asking the question "What made you want to be a firefighter?"

The Diaz took a breath, pausing for a moment "I guess I've always wanted to help people- I feel like I need to help people" her shoulders bunch "That's why I became a firefighter, to help"

Taylor looked at the girl the curiosity, leaning forward ever so slightly "Why do you feel like you need to help people?"

Adalynn rolled her lips into her mouth hesitating for a moment "Maybe it's because of how my childhood was until I was about six- I wasn't always a Diaz, I'm adopted" She paused for a moment.

The Diaz looked back to Taylor "let's just say it wasn't a good childhood, mother left and my father was abusive" she finished her sentence.

She interlocked her hands while her legs bounced anxiously "When the Diaz's adopted me I felt like I could never leave someone who needed my help- no matter how little a situation is"

Taylor looked slightly taken aback and shocked at her answer- the Kelly woman not expecting that.

Adalynn sniffled slightly before standing up "There's your shot" she uttered before walking away from the woman.

"Looks like you left her speechless" Chimney commented chuckling lightly, making a joke.

Adalynn gave a slight smile "well I just leave that impression" she shrugged.

The Diaz grabbing a miniature cupcake from the table filled with food given to the first responders "this is a lot of food-"

Before the girl could finish her sentence the bell rang causing the girls mouth to fall open- slightly angry she hasn't gotten to eat half of the food laid out.

Adalynn's lips pressed in a line before she began to shove the cupcake into her mouth- in a desperate attempt to finish the treat.

Adalynn climbed out of the engine, her eyes wandering through the crowd before looking to Taylor and her Camera Man who followed the group closely.

"I heard there was a man chocking to death here?" Bobby questioned a short older woman.

She shook her head with a slight smile "No, uh, Gregory says he doesn't want any help now"

Bobby's brows cinched together "okay, excuse me ma'am"

Adalynn frowned slightly "I feel kinda bad, she seemed so sweet"

Eddie chuckled "you think every old person is sweet" he glanced at the girl.

She rolled her eyes, giving him a look.

"I wonder how many he got down" Buck spoke up "Joey Chestnut scarfed down seventy-four hot dogs in ten minutes at last year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest"

Adalynn's nose scrunched "I can barely stand eating hot dogs" she stopped seeing as they arrived at the table.

"Excuse me, sir!" Bobby looked at the man wearing a green plaid flannel. "Are you refusing care?"

The man breathlessly waved his hand, a groggy look on his face.

A hissing sound filled the ears of the 118, Adalynn's eyes turn back to her feet her eyes widening.

Chimney catching what she saw, the a yell leaving his own lips the man almost jumping into Adalynn's arms

"geez!"

The 118 laughing at the his reaction, Bobby patting his back. "Cute" Chimney uttered looking at the older woman holding the leash "he yours?"

She smiled warmly "that's Claude. He's the grand prize"

Adalynn's face contorts slightly "nice... pet?" She tried to compliment but well a Komodo Dragon wasn't exactly her type of pet.

A groan caught their ears before Gregory collapsed over. The team rushing into action.

"Get these table and chairs out of here" Chimney ordered the team going to do as he said.

Bobby ordered for some room from the crowd and from Taylor and her camera-man.

"Airways are sealing up" Hen announced removing the stethoscope from his chest "I need the BPM"

Adalynn began to bag the man while the hooked up the machine. The Diaz's brows furrow before pulling the mask away from his face only to see crickets crawling from his mouth.

Adalynn's mouth hangs open, the girl swallowing thickly "what the hell!?"

"Locusts!" Hen shouts swatting them away.

"No they're actually Crickets" Sandy corrects, the older woman "we allowed anything that Claude would eat. We thought it might be fun"

Adalynn pressed her lips together "yeah" she trailed off "not enough money in the world would make me eat Crickets"

The BPM machine started to ring "He's coding"

"Starting compressions"

After about a minute Hen frowned with a shake of her head "Damn it, the blockage is too big. He's not getting enough air. Let me try something. Buck give me the Magill"

Adalynn watched as Hen pulled open the man's mouth before she used the instrument to pull out a ball of Crickets.

The curly-haired woman looked away, gaging slightly.

Gregory slowly starts to come too "he's back!"

"Got sinus rhythm, pulse actions rising. Let's get him up"

The man sits up gaging before he vomits, well, crickets.

"All this for a lizard, huh?" Eddie asks in slight disbelief.

"A monitor lizard, and five hundred bucks" the man explains "and I just lost!"

The woman from the seat beside him started cheering 'yes you did' with a muffled voice until she herself finally gives out as roaches fall from her mouth.

"Oh my god!" Adalynn exclaimed in disgust.

"LAFD, Clear a path" Bobby announces to the pedestrians.

"Oh look, another contest" she tossed her hand up slightly looking at the Buckley man beside her. "I think we're on a streak"

Buck chuckled slightly while they made their way towards the line-up of body builders and one man stuck in a pose.

"Looks like extreme hypontremia" Buck comments.

Adalynn glanced his way "that's a pretty big word for you, Buck"

He rolled his eyes "funny"

The man looks between the pair "say what?"

Hen sets her bag down "you got a Charlie horse"

"He is a Charlie horse" Chim adds eyeing the man

Bobby looked at him an asked "what's your name?"

"Charlie"

Adalynn pursed her lips "that's ironic"

Bobby nods "okay, Charlie, when was the last time you had any fluids

"Yesterday afternoon" he struggled to reply.

"Flush yourself out for the competition today?" Chimney question while putting on his gloves.

He nods taking short struggled breaths to answer "and for the weigh-ins, to make the veins pop"

"You are definitely popping"

"Alright, Charlie your potassium and your sodium have bottomed out and that's why you're seizing up" Bobby began to explain "now, before we start replenishing your electrolytes, you got to answer me honestly: are you dosing?"

"No- no steroids if that's what you mean I'm totally clean"

Chimney gave his cap a slightly unconvinced look.

Bobby paused for a moment before looking at Taylor and her cameraman "okay, you two need to back off. Get that camera out of here, please.

"Cap needs room to work" Eddie stepped in front of them to move them back.

"I'm working too" Taylor shot back with slight malice in her voice.

Adalynn's eyes narrowed "yeah, we'll work further back" Taylor's gaze adverted to her "were trying to do our job"

Taylor slowly began to move back. Adalynn turned around her hands on her hips while she rolled her eyes at the slight ignorance of the woman.

"Charlie, I just need you to know if you're not being straight with me, and we start giving you saline and you have been dosing your kidneys could start to fail. Okay, and that will be on you" Bobby tried to bring out the severity at stake.

"I'm on steroids" Charlie quickly spoke.

Bobby nods "okay that's better. You taking anything else?"

"I took a diuretic last night to shed some water weight" he confessed.

"That explains his low blood pressure" Hen comments looking at her team.

Bobby nods taking short"all right, let's get him transported"

"On three everybody" Buck began to count down while Adalynn helped support the backboard along with Eddie and Buck.

The team slowly lowering the man until he was laid flat.

"Am I- am I gonna be okay?" Charlie questioned with concern

"We're gonna get you through the day" Bobby assured.

Chimney takes a breath "you'd think he'd earn a trophy for holding that pose so long"

Adalynn glanced at the man with a slight laugh "I'd be demanding my trophy"

"Damn it!" Adalynn cursed through gritted teeth, hands on her hips while she paced back in forth still holding the ping pong paddle in her hand.

"Oh yeah!" Chimney tossed his hands up in victory, laughing while leaning on the table "off your game, Diaz"

She rolled her eyes with a scoff "lucky win" she sang out tossing the paddle down.

"Hey, maybe ping pong just isn't your sport" Eddie shrugged from the couch.

Adalynn mocking him in a slight higher tone while leaning on the island counter.

Eddie sucked in a breath "I told you man, sore loser"

Adalynn holds up a finger "to be fair, I'm not that great of a winner, either" she sighed "I'm just too competitive for this world" her tone laced with sarcasm.

The curly-haired girl looked at the firefighter classed sitting on the counter, eyeing the Han man "I see someone's been bragging about winning the firefighter calendar"

Chimney scoffed "damn right I am" he made his way over picking it up and motioning to himself on the cover "I mean, come on"

Adalynn rolled his eyes at his slight cockiness. "Tone it down, Chim"

She made her way over to the table still filled with the dozen options in food from the civilians, she picked up a few pieces and walked back over to the counter.

"You know" she began, her voice muffled and her hand covering her mouth "I think I eat the best when I'm on shift"

"Don't we all" Hen comments from her spot on the barstool.

Adalynn waved a hand "no, you don't understand how terrible of a cook I am" she laughed "my go to food to cook is grilled cheese or pasta"

"You're kidding?" Hen asked with slight disbelief.

"Trust me, she's not" Eddie pipped up from his spot "you'll learn after living with her for years"

Adalynn's eyes trailed away from the people before her and onto Buck who was sitting with Taylor.

Her face fell slightly as she rolled her eyes and a scoff.

"Oo" Chimney sang out "someone doesn't like the weather lady"

"What?" She looked at him confused "no, she's" adalynn paused trying to find the word "fine"

Chimney laughed at her answer, Adalynn held her hand up "alright, whatever" she waved him off "I don't have a problem with Taylor"

Well, maybe she did.

Adalynn leaned on the back of the sofa, a brownie in her hand.

Chimney made his way up the stairs a laugh leaving his lips "new arrival. When the send it in plastic you know it's gonna be good" he looks at the camera.

Adalynn's lips curled into a smirk as chimney went to open the container, his face falling "aw"

"Serious you guys? You couldn't even leave me any crumbs?" He holds up the bow empty container.

"Oh, Chim, you missed out" Buck comments walking past him.

"Is that chocolate?" He points at the treat in his hand.

Eddie hummed "fudge, with nuts"

"I love fudge with nuts" the Han man utters.

"Oh, damn, you would've loved these because" Hen pauses closing her eyes "scrumptious"

"Truly, Chim" Adalynn added on to the teasing "best thing we've gotten, hand to god"

Chimney drops the container leaning on the table before looking back at the camera "I'm sorry you had to see this. The dark underbelly of hour 21 in a 24 hour shift" he takes a breath "gets pretty mercenary out here"

Just as his sentence finished the bell rang causing the group to dart down the stairs, towards the engine.

"Man" Eddie rubbed his eyes "allergies are going crazy today"

"You too, huh?" Buck looks at the man beside him "the index wasn't elevated this morning. Think it's a new kind?"

A slightly confused look covers Adalynn's face "a new what?"

"Kind of pollen" Buck answered like it was obvious.

"A new kind of pollen?" Chimney asks sarcastically.

Adalynn looked at her hands holding her arms out, confusion and daze filling her senses.

"You're not feeling this, Chim?" Eddie questioned staring down before looking out the window "I can see the pollen"

Adalynn's eyes widened as she leaned forward to look out the window.

"I can hear it!" Buck exclaims.

Adalynn gasps slightly a wide smile taking over her face "me too!"

Chimney looked between the three, confusion on his face and also not able to tell if Adalynn was being sarcastic or not.

"Buckley, Diaz- Diaz's!" Let's go" Chimney shouts at the three but only two were standing in the doorway.

"Did these beauty queens shrink, or are we suddenly giants?" Buck whispered to the man.

Eddie gasps stepping back slightly. Adalynn rushed into the room her eyes widening at the children and a gasp leaving her lips "oh my god, I knew it, the Smurf's are after us, Eddie" she elbows her brother never taking her eyes off the little girls.

Bucks brows pull together "aren't the Smurf's the little blue people?"

Adalynn's eyes twitched her head tilting "what?" She trailed off.

Athena escorted the rambling women to the policemen by the doors before chimney shouts "can someone please bring me the rest of my gear!?"

The three adults eyes stayed trained on the little girls- as if in their own world.

"I think he means you guys" Athena spoke up.

Buck looks up to meet the woman's gaze "hey Athena. They're like the tiniest ladies I've ever seen" he pinches his fingers "teeny-tiny!"

"Excuse me?" She places her hands on her hips. Liliane making her way over to the group her own confused look on her features.

"Well" Adalynn motions towards the kids "they're Smurfs, they have to be tiny, Athena"

"Say what?" Athena looked between the group before and then to her ride along rookie who was just staring at her roommate in complete shock.

Athena sighed before her gaze shifted "Henrietta!" She called out.

Hen turned to look at the woman " 'Thena" she sang out walking towards the woman, smelling the air "oh, 'Thena you smell like love"

Athena looked between the group with a bewildered look on her face "Chimney! I need you over here" she grabbed her radio "727-L-30 requesting immediate R.A backup at Beverly Wilton Hotel, Pacific Ballroom"

Chimney stormed his way over "where the hell is my lindo-" he stops mid sentence looking at the four.

"We got a problem here" Athena scoffed "you guys be tripping"

"Yeah, these don't look like a bunch of 'not high' people" Lili commented.

Chimneys brows cinch together "what? Guys look at me. You know where you are?"

Eddie pokes his head through the balloons "where everywhere, man"

Athena tossed her hands "they're on drugs"

Hen slowly began to break out into a laugh moving towards the Han man resting her head on his shoulder.

Adalynn chuckled "I want whatever she's on" she looked to the side her face falling, her voice dropping to a whisper "Eddie? Eddie!"

His head came through the balloons again "you gotta try this!"

Realization dawned on Chimneys face "oh my god, it's the brownies"

"Brownies?" Athena questioned.

"We got new batch today" Chimney went into explain while still patting Hens back "we've been getting a lot of stuff lately especially since the earthquake"

Athena looked at him in disbelief "you guys eat that stuff? We just throw that stuff right in the trash!"

Chimney shrugs "were firefighters, everybody loves us"

Athena looked at the man before rolling her eyes.

"I mean" Liliane shrugged "we're not exactly people's favourite first responders.

Athena walked back over to the group, who were now in handcuffs.

"What's going on?" Eddie questioned as the police officer finished handcuffing him "I don't like this" a chocked sob leaves his lips.

Adalynn looked at her brother "oh my go you're crying" a wide smile took over her features as she laughed hysterically.

"Ooo, you made him cry" Buck added on.

Athena held her hand up "all right. Just breathe, okay? You're gonna be okay, somebody dosed you with an hallucinogen. We don't want you to hurt yourselves or anyone else.

"Yeah, I like that idea" Eddie nodded quickly.

Adalynn's eyes widen "waiitt" her mouth falls agape "Athena," she made her way towards the woman her voice going to a whisper "are you telling me, I'm high??"

The Grant woman eyed her "yes"

Her face turns to a frown "oh my god, I haven't been high since like- grade twelve" her voice caught in her throat "I'm gonna lose my job, oh my god!"

Athena shook her head stumbling over her words "Adalynn, you won't lose you're job, you'll be fine-"

" 'Thena, your head is beating like your heart" Hen pulled the Grants attention away from the now other hysterical Diaz.

She sighed "is it?"

Adalynn groaned out with a sigh "I'm just so thankful we're not getting followed around with a camera crew anymore- it's annoying"

She dropped onto her sofa looking at her friend "and Taylor Kelly had no respect for the patients boundaries like" she scoffed "was not my favourite person"

Adam shrugged "you sure it's not because you got drugged?" He held up a finger "Oh, and texted your ex!?"

Adalynn tossed her head back "not the point, Adam! Besides I don't even remember doing that! I opened my phone and there was the text"

The man adjusted in his seat looking at her "so why don't you like this Taylor whatever-" he waved a dismissive hand.

Adalynn's lips pursed before she sighed "I don't know- she just seems into herself- like too into herself" she looked to her friend "I mean, she's not really into this whole documentary thing for the hell of it I think she's in it for herself- her own fame"

The door closed gaining the pairs attention from the couch "Hey, Adalynn, so I thought maybe this week for groceries-"

She paused with a slight awkward chuckle "oh- I, I'll go didn't realize you were on a date-"

Adam burst out into a fit of laughter causing Adalynn to glare at him and punch him in the arm- causing his laughs to stop and to mutter an ow.

She sighed looking back to her roommate "it's not a date, trust me. If it was Adam just made a really big mistake"

"Anyways, Lil this is Adam, on of my friends from back home who is considering moving here" she introduced the pair.

Lilliane walking over with a hand held out "Liliane"

"Nice to meet you" Adam shook her hand, adjusting in his seat "hey, did you hear your roommate got drugged today?"

Adalynn rolled her eyes at her friend and his big mouth.

Lilliane laughed lightly "oh yeah. I was there" she rounded the couch taking a seat on the empty chair.

Adalynn hummed "yep, everyone saw me high because someone laced our food" she tossed her hands up slightly.

"Her weakness" he coughed out, pretending to cover up his words.

Adalynns phone dinged the girl flipping it over, her face dropping at the name.

"It's him" Adam jumped up slightly, causing Liliane to grow confused. "Give me the phone" he reached forward trying to snatch it from her grasp.

Adalynn smacked his hand away and swiftly got up from the couch.

She sighed, her finger hovering over the text message although her friend whispering the gossip about her ex to her roommate still flooding her ears.

Her lips rolled into her mouth as she took a deep breath before holding down and deleting the message.

She turned around walking back towards the pair who stared at her intensely.

"So" Liliane trailed off, not really having full context but having enough to want to know the details.

She shrugged "I don't know. I deleted it"

Adam's mouth practically fell open "what!?"

"I deleted it" she repeated, sending a slight wave of"alright I'm going to bed, night- have fun on my couch Adam"

His eye twitched at the Diaz who walked into her room before looking at the Chen women "uh, what the hell??"

Adalynn joined the others that were staring at the TV. Reaching forward and grabbing a handful of popcorn "ready for the damage" she joked- well, Half joked.

"Where's cap?" Eddie asked looking at Chimney who had just walked up beside Adalynn.

Buck did a Quick Look around "he's not watching with us?"

"No, said he had other things to do" Chimney answered.

"I think his words were he'd rather do anything other than this" Hen chuckled out.

Adalynn's head tilts "don't blame him"

After the whole documentary had finished, to Adalynn's slight shock it wasn't that bad. There's was no mention of them being drugged with LSD and probably to Bobby's liking, he was barely in it.

But of course the slight shock of questions went around.

"Wait, you never said you were adopted?" Chimney looked at the woman beside him.

She chuckled "not exactly something I shout from the rooftops" her shoulders bunch "the Diaz's are my family. Plain and simple"

Eddie looked at his sister with a heartfelt smile "So you all know" he raised a finger "her overly competitiveness doesn't come from the Diaz bloodline-"

Adalynn grabbed a handful of popcorn tossing it at the man "Shut up, Edmundo. Don't make me regret saying something nice"

Although, Adalynn would never regret saying what she did. She wasn't a Hartz she was a Diaz by blood or not.

They were her family that she needed and she wouldn't have traded it out for anyone else.
