Episode 3 - Help Is Not Coming
───────────────────
Adalynn, Eddie, and Buck make their way back down the stairwell guiding Ali as they did so.
Adalynn smiled at the girl "You're doing great" she held her hand out to help her as they hit the spot where you step off the stairs and onto the wall because of the slant the building had crumbled to.
"You've uh, must've done this before haven't you?" Buck comments.
"yeah. it was, uh, my major at the Rhode Island school of design" She spoke her voice laced with sarcasm.
Ali sighs "Sorry, sarcasm is my fallback for... Pretty much everything"
Adalynn chuckles lightly looking at the girl "Please, Don't worry I'm used to sarcasm. My friend, Adam, from back in Texas is the most sarcastic person you'll ever meet"
Eddie tilts his head "She's not exaggerating"
Buck's brows pull together "Who?"
Adalynn rolled her eyes "Believe it or not, Buck. I had a life before LA"
Buck just bunches his shoulders "I just never heard you mention him before"
"Relax there, Evan" Adalynn held her hand up "He's gay, he'd be more into you then he is into me"
Eddie looks at the man with furrowed brows "Alright, let's keep moving" He changes the subject on the pair as the continue to make their way down the stairwell.
Eddie held his hand out towards Ali to help her down as the building tilts more. Ali paused for a moment "You think he'll still be on the sidewalk when we get down there?"
It was silent for a moment "No" Buck answered, trying to reassure the woman "we're not going out that side anyway"
Eddie raises his brows "let's hustle up you three, We don't want to be here for the next aftershock"
Ali's eyes widen "Wait, what do you mean the next aftershock?"
Adalynn pressed her lips together as she passes Eddie "Good job" she spoke sarcastically.
Eddie rolled his eyes as he held his hand back out for Ali "Come on"
Ali hesitantly takes Eddie's hand, she slowly steps towards the Diaz her feet landing on the staircase railing.
Adalynn continued her way down the stairs climbing over the rubble before she comes to a stop causing Eddie to look at her confused.
A sigh leaves the girls lips "I don't think we're getting out this way"
She points her light forward, lighting up the blocked off staircase, her gaze shifting to Buck and Eddie.
"Now what?" Ali questions. All three firefighters look back up the stairs "We go back up" Eddie states.
"Back up?" Ali recites but before another word could come out Bobby's voice fills their ears coming from their radios.
"Ladder 118, respond. This is Captain Nash, I need a headcount"
Eddie takes ahold of his radio "Ladder 118 responding. Diaz, Buckley, and Diaz, we're good, Cap"
Adalynn's brows raise "Might need to figure out a different way to address which Diaz"
Adalynn listened closely as the names come through the last one being Chimney. Confusion covers the girls face as the radio goes silent, no word was heard from Hen.
"Hen, do you copy? Hen" Bobby spoke through the radio, the silence continues "This is captain Nash for Henrietta Wilson. Do you copy?"
Adalynn begins to grow worried as she shares a look with buck.
"Is she a friend of yours?" Ali questions.
Eddie takes a breath, glancing at the girl "Let's keep moving"
➷
Adalynn grunts as she pulls herself up through the doorway quickly moving to the side, keeping herself tilted, her hand on the floor for support as buck comes through the doorway, helping Ali as he does. Eddie being the last to follow through.
"Miss, there's this egress on the North stairwell of this floor" Eddie explains to the woman.
Ali looks to him as she asks "What if it's blocked, too? Can't you guys get a ladder into one of the windows?"
Adalynn tilts her head glancing over her shoulder "It's too risky"
Eddie nods in agreement "The building shifted too much"
"No, we got this, Abby. We'll get you out of here" Buck states causing Adalynn to give him a look with furrowed brows from the boy calling her by the wrong name.
"Ali" She corrects.
Buck looks almost confused as he questions "What?"
"You called me Abby. My name's Ali" Ali clarifies to the man.
Buck's brows raise as he looks to the ground "Oh, sorry. Um, Abby is my" he paused for a moment "It's complicated"
"Usually is" Adalynn sighs out as they continue to make their way down the hall.
"Uh, she's in Europe" Buck explains "She's traveling. And for the first time I'm glad she's not around. I don't need to worry"
Adalynn glances at the man behind her as he spoke. "Here" Eddie's voice filled her ears, the older man holding out a piece of drywall. She nods taking it from his hand and setting it against the wall out of their way.
"Having someone to worry about actually sounds nice" Ali said as she leaned against the wall "All I do is work" she downed one of the miniature alcohol beverages.
The three firefighters give her a look and she just raises her brows at them "What? It's after five. it's not like it slowed us down"
Adalynn shrugs with a frown "She's got a point"
Buck holds up his hands signalling everyone to go silent "Hey, hey, hey, hey"
"Do you guys hear that?" he questions Adalynn's brows cinch together, the curly haired girl trying to listen for what Buck had heard.
Adalynn thought maybe the man was hearing things until finally the faint voice filled her ears along with everyone else's "Help! Is anyone there!"
The three move towards the door in front of them. Buck uses his Halligan to pry open the door. Adalynn takes his hand as she slides into the room. Her eyes fall onto the man and she lets go of his hand and crawls her way towards Batari- The injured worker.
She tosses a rolling chair out of the way before moving over and making room fro the other two firefighters to enter the room.
"I knew help would come" Batari spoke, relief and happiness in his tone while they look at him.
Eddie nods "That's right. We're here, we got you, buddy"
"All right, don't move. Just relax, okay? we need you to stay as still as possible" Buck instructs him.
"We need to roll him over" Adalynn announces as she looks to them "On three, on two, three" Eddie and Adalynn roll the man onto his side while Buck supports his head incase of a spinal injury, A pained groan leaving Batari.
"I... I soiled myself" Batari states to the firefighters.
Eddie shakes his head "Forget about that, okay" he takes off Batari's shoe and sock.
"Not my proudest moment" Batari says, embarrassment filling his voice.
Adalynn waves a dismissive hand "Hey, we all have our not-so-great moments" She gives him a soft smile "nothing to worry about"
Buck slides down to the other end of the room- considering the building was so slanted, in search of something flat like a backboard for the man.
"Can you wiggle your toes for me?" Eddie asks the man, Adalynn watches as there's no movement before sharing a look with her brother. Eddie motions his head to go down towards Buck.
"We'll be right back, sir" Adalynn says to him before sliding down, landing beside Buck Eddie following after.
"Numbness in his legs, loss of bladder control" Buck lists off giving a knowing look to the pair.
Eddie nods "Spinal injury. We got to move him out now"
"On what?" Buck questions "We don't have a backboard and every millimeter counts"
Eddie sighs out and looks around the room "See anything?"
Adalynn shakes her head before Ali's voice gains her attention "Guys, what about this?" she holds out an ironing board.
Adalynn lips pull into an upside down smile "not bad, it could work"
"But how are we gonna get him down the stairwell?" Eddie counters causing Adalynn to sigh.
"What if we don't use the stairwell" Buck comments.
Adalynn's brows furrow as she looks at him confused, until her eyes widen slightly "The elevator!?" She exclaims but trying to keep her voice low like a whisper not to cause panic.
. . .
Adalynn peered down the elevator shaft, not exactly liking the idea they had but there wasn't much of a choice, they were out of options.
"At least we're not blocked by any debris" Eddie states as he himself peered down the elevator shaft.
"Or an Elevator" Ali comments.
Eddie turns onto his back as he shines his flashlight upwards in search of the elevator, Ali following the shine of his light "Um, how much do you think that weighs?"
Adalynn frowns with a shrug "Probably between 2,500 to at least 3000 pounds"
Buck peers over the three to see inside, looking up and then down "I like our chances"
Adalynn stands back up as she tosses her hands up ever so slightly "Of course you do"
Buck looks at the girl as he crosses his arms "What are you gonna tell me you're afraid of heights?"
Adalynn scoffs "Heights? no, a 3,000 pound elevator?" Her nose scrunches up, her lips pressed together "Kind of, yeah"
"Come on, I mean what are the chances of that falling?" He motions towards the elevator shaft.
Adalynn's eyes narrow at him almost in a way like he was crazy and stupid "Hm, well, seeing as the building we're in is literally tilted to the side- I'd say pretty good"
"Okay, how about instead of freaking everyone out we drop this conversation" Eddie gives the younger firefighters a look causing Adalynn to sigh as she held her hands up in a defeated manner.
Adalynn helped Eddie secure Batari before she hooked the harness around herself, seeing as Adalynn knew how serious a spinal injury was she offered- more so stated that she was helping Eddie bring the man down on the make-shift backboard.
Adalynn began to lower herself down the elevator shaft as she looked up motioning her hand down signalling for Eddie to start carefully start lowering Batari down.
Once Batari was set up against the wall of the elevator shaft, she gave a thumbs up "Alright, you're good, Eddie"
Eddie began following Adalynn down on the other side of Batari the three continuing to go lower.
"Eight more feet, Buck!" Eddie called up to the man.
Adalynn held her hand up "Okay, you're good to start coming down" She hollered up to Buck and Ali.
Adalynn moved Batari to the side slightly while Eddie pried open the Elevator doors. Eddie gives the girl a nod but just as Adalynn went to pull herself through the doors she froze.
Her head darts upwards, the building began to vibrate, Adalynn's eyes widen slightly as she watches the Elevator slide down slightly.
"Is the building vibrating?" Batari questions looking where he could.
"Keep that door open!" Buck shouts down the the pair. Adalynn and Eddie swiftly move once they had gotten themselves onto the floor, the pair pulled Batari in.
Adalynn glanced at her brother as she fumbles to unhook the ropes attached to Batari "Tell him to hurry the hell up" she could hear every time the elevator would skid down another inch from the loud screeching noise that would echo down the elevator shaft.
"Let's go, Buck. Move your ass!" The older Diaz shouted up to the man.
"Alright, here we come, here we come!" Buck quickly repelled down the elevator shaft before practically tossing himself and Ali through the open doors.
Adalynn watch as the elevator just missed them before it fell completly down. The girl quickly makes her way towards Ali who was laying on the floor.
Her eyes go to the elevator shaft once more as a loud crash was heard before smoke dusted up.
"I told you I liked our chances" Buck comments earning a look from the Diaz girl, she shoves him lightly as she stands "Should've put money on our conversation earlier"
➷
Adalynn explained Batari's situation to the paramedics as the wheel the man off, She stopped just a few feet away from the ambulance before turning around, wiping her hands on her jacket.
Adalynn turned to her brother giving him a playful smirk "Not bad," she smacked his shoulder.
Eddie rolled his eyes while he tried to put an annoyed expression on his face which ultimately failed causing Adalynn to laugh "Act angry all you want" she holds her hands up walking away from her brother "You could never hate me!"
The curly haired girl laughs to herself while she makes her way back towards the firetruck, pulling off her gloves, setting them on the engine before her.
Buck came up beside her setting a few of the engine tools back in their spots, The young Diaz girl eyeing the boy "Liked out chances" Adalynn mocked trying to mimic his voice which failed.
Buck held his hand up towards her "Alright, what would you have suggested?"
Adalynn bunches her shoulders "It has nothing to do with your elevator idea, it was the only option"
Buck's eyes narrow at her ever so slightly, a faint smile on the Buckley's face "So what's with the mockery?" he chuckled out.
Adalynn purses her lips while turning to the boy, leaning on the engine beside her "I just really wish I put money on that the elevator would fall- Like I said it would"
Buck tosses his head back with a laugh "so you're angry because technically you could've won but didn't"
She inhales sharply patting the boys should "What can I say, I'm a competitive person let's just say I would've beat you all out for the calendar" the curly haired girls brows raise as she motions to herself while walking away "I mean- come on, you guys wouldn't have standed a chance" she teases.
A smile grew on the boys face while she walked away, the boy laughing to himself.
. . .
It didn't take people long to realize Cap and Chimney haven't exited the building yet considering Hen was still in there. Adalynn could assume that on what she knew about Hen already was that she would never leave any of them behind even if it meant defying a direct order and the Diaz assumed that they would never leave her behind either.
And because of this it also didn't take long for herself, Eddie, and Buck to head down towards the underground parking garage.
Adalynn could faintly hear Bobby's voice as the walked through the parking garage "But I think it's far enough out that we can get back behind it and push it out the rest of the way"
"Looks like we got her just in time, then" Buck said, announcing their presence to Bobby and Chimney.
Eddie tilts his head "yeah, seems like they were planning on having all the fun without us"
"Really think you two were going to save Hen and get all the credit?" Adalynn joked as she leaned against the truck Chimney and Cap were using to pull out some of the rubble to make an entrance way.
"Heard over the radio you needed some equipment and any available hands" the three stopped walking at Buck's words.
Adalynn sent a half smile their way "We brought all we could carry"
Bobby looked between the three "You know you guys are defying a direct order?"
"And they'll be duly reprimanded, as soon as we're done here" Chief Williams announced her own presence along with a few other firefighters.
"Looks like you're gonna have to reprimand yourself as well" Bobby added his attention turning to the woman
She took a breath, stepping forward "I'm seriously considering it. Your people are very persuasive and persistent. One shot, Captain" She pauses for a moment "Either way, no one's coming to rescue us"
Chimney got back into the Truck as the continue to pull ruble out now that they had stronger cables to pull out the fallen pieces of cement and other crushed objects to fully begin their search for the Wilson woman.
"It's clear now, we need some support beams" Bobby ordered as the firefighters moved to do as he said and hammered support beams.
"Straight ahead" Chimney states, the firefighters climbing under and continue to pull lose pieces of cement and rubble passing them down in a make-shift line.
They finally pull down the last big piece, quickly moving out of the way as it fell.
Adalynn reached for her flashlight, shining it through the small opening, awaiting for Hen to come out. She grew slightly anxious as it seemed to take longer than she had hopped until finally the barking of a dog filled her ears as it came running out the opening but still no Hen in sight.
"Hen" Buck called out "Hen are you there?"
A relieved breath leaves Adalynn's lips, a smile forming on her face as Hen comes into sight carrying a little girl on her back.
The woman coughs covered in dirt and dust from the concrete, looking at everyone "Hey fellas"
Adalynn chuckled lightly as they help her out, Once Hen was fully out Adalynn gave her a tight hug before pulling away with a wide smile.
➷
Adalynn came back up to the firetruck, putting gear away before closing the hatch.
"Okay, in seriousness if Chimney wasn't in the calendar you really think you would've beat me?" Buck question, slightly curious of her answer.
A smirk fell on the woman's face as she ran her teeth over her tongue "Afraid you would lose to a woman there, Evan?" she shrugs looking away from him "because you would've"
before Buck could get another word out his phone buzzed in his pocket along with Adalynn's "Hey, service" he holds up his phone slightly.
The curly haired girl pulled out her phone ready over the message from Adam, she smile writing back a quick 'All good'.
Adalynn turned to Eddie who quickly pulled out his own phone, The younger Diaz girl coming to his side. A relieved smile tugging on the girls face at the text message she saw.
Buck had offered to drive Adalynn and Eddie from the station to Christophers school, Eddie swiftly getting out of the vehicle running towards the School doors.
Adalynn was about to follow him before she turned to the Buckley boy giving him a thankful smile "Thank you" She said before she herself ran towards the school.
Adalynn walked in just as Eddie pulled away from Christoper, Adalynn dropped to her knees a wide smile on her face as she hugged the young boy tightly "Hey, buddy" She said barley above a whisper.
She cupped his face before kissing his forehead. Eddie swooped up the boy spinning him around causing Adalynn to laugh unbeknownst to the pair of eyes that still watched from his car at the interaction with a smile on his face.
