Urgency & Loss

A/N: Dorcas' thoughts are in italics! Make sure to pay attention to the times because it could get a little confusing if you don't!

November 1, 1981

His hair flew back behind him as he sped down the road on a motorbike. They didn't want to take the risk of flying this time around. If you were there, you would be able to smell the urgency that he held in his posture, hunched over trying to go faster. Some may ask why he was so tense, but they just would not understand the situation.

Sirius Black was going to Potter Manor with one other person on the back of his motorcycle.

4 hours earlier...

Marlene and Sirius had been having a great Halloween night so far. Well, as good as it could've been in a war drawn world with their favourite people in hiding.

With some of the best candy in tow, they were about to set off to Myles and Dorcas' house to check up on them. Marlene could not wait to see her brother, as she hadn't been able to see him in a little while. She couldn't push away her worries without seeing them—letters just didn't cut it at this point.

She sat on the back of the motorbike and wrapped her arms securely around Sirius's waist. They skipped the precautions of wearing helmets—Marlene could hear her mother scolding her from above—before quickly flying into the night.

...

Still 8:34

"Dork! 'Lene is going to be so mad you've already put him to bed!" Myles laughed as Dorcas walked out of Asher's nursery.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm his mother, so I have control over when he goes to bed, and I say now is his bedtime," she responded, crossing her arms over her chest.

Myles went over to the kitchen stove, turning on the kettle for some late night tea. Grabbing four glasses, he meant to set them down on the counter, but he dropped them at the sight of the window outside.

"Myles! You're cleaning that up because last time I got glass in hand and-" Dorcas was cut off when Myles started to push her up the stairs. "Oi! What is wrong with you?"

Myles stopped for a fleeting second to show the fear in his eyes. He pulled his hands away from Dorcas' shoulders to pat his pockets.

"Fuck! Do you have your wand?" Myles asked, she nodded her head slowly in response.

"Myles, what's going on? What's wrong?"

"There's no time for questions! You need to take Ash and protect yourselves! I'll hold him back for a little while," Myles kissed her quickly before shoving her in the nursery.

"How are you going to fight without a wand?" Dorcas' eyes widened at what was happening.

"I love you," he spoke as he disappeared from her sight.

"I love you too," she shouted back.

As she ran up the stairs, she tried to distract herself from what Myles was preparing himself to do. It was a suicide mission.

Quickly scanning the dark room, she realised Asher had already been awoken by the ruckus around him. He stood up in his crib, with his tiny hands grabbing the crib railing.

"Alright, buddy, it's gonna be alright. We're going to be fine. Daddy's just gone downstairs to greet a visitor and we are going to hide in this closet," Dorcas tried to speak clearly even though he couldn't understand a word she was saying.

Merlin help us...

She heard the door slam open, but no footsteps followed. Maybe, it was the wind! Maybe, he didn't actually show up and Myles had just mistaken him for a kid in a costume!

"Fools, the both of you! Get out of my way!" The high-pitched voice alone was enough to give nightmares.

Dorcas squeezed Asher closer to her chest as if she was a safety net around him. That's it!

Her mother had taught her about some extremely old magic that could make an object unbreakable in every way. It was a stretch, but if she managed to put the spell upon Asher, then maybe he wouldn't be able to die!

Before even trying the spell though, Dorcas cast a quick patronus message to Dumbledore with two words, "He came."

"Never! I am no coward!" Myles spit back.

That's my baby!

She touched the tip of her wand to Asher's chest and closed her eyes. Being as silent as possible, she started to whisper.

The spell worked like this. You had to whisper your dearest five things in your life, before closing it with why the object—or in this case the person—should be unbreakable.

"Myles, Asher, books, biscuits, and the Order."

A sudden thud from downstairs caused her to snap her eyes open. Dorcas, in hindsight, knew exactly what had happened, but she willed herself not to believe it, in order to not completely lose it while curled up in that closet.

Myles McKinnon had lived a short life, yes, but he had filled the twenty-seven years with great things. Little eleven-year-old Myles had been sorted into Slytherin—much to the dismay of Michael, as he wanted Myles to be a Gryffindor just like him.

He was chosen to be a Slytherin chaser in his third-year, just in time to play Michael in his brother's last year. Unfortunately, the Slytherin team sucked that year and was no match for any of the other houses.

Something that had followed him throughout his entire Hogwarts career, was the prejudice inside and outside of his school house. Everyone outside of Slytherin had trademarked them to be the worst people alive just because around half of them were bad eggs. Myles had to avoid his common room as much as possible though, because there were Slytherin seminars preaching the Dark Lord's word.

That is actually how he ended making his one and only friend. Dorcas had found Myles, who was upset at the time about something Michael had said, and managed to comfort him. Not even the fact that Dorcas was in Ravenclaw could separate the two, it was as if they clicked right away.

Following Hogwarts, Myles took a year off from everything and decided to travel the world. Who better to bring with him than Dorcas?

They fought with themselves for around half the trip, before deciding to just cut the sexual tension and get married. They skipped any form of dating and decided to go to a courthouse somewhere in Europe, let the church bells ring, and kiss. This could have been disastrous for anyone else, but for them it just worked, just like their relationship.

Of course, they didn't do anything normally, so, instead of getting rings, they tattooed a band around their left hand, ring finger. Binded together for life and, perhaps, death too.

"He doesn't deserve to die," Dorcas closed her eyes again to finish the spell.

She heard his cloak billow behind him as he went up the stairs at a dreadfully slow pace. It was as if he knew that drawing out the process of finding her in the closet was killing her before he could.

"Hide and seek isn't a nice game to play. Come out, come out, wherever you are," he spoke tauntingly.

Hearing the nursery window open made Dorcas practically jolt in place. Her breathing became more rapid, all before realising that she just heard Voldemort's voice from a different room. If it wasn't Voldemort at the window, then who was it?

"Dork? Where are you?" Michael McKinnon whispered into the cold, dark room.

Hearing her husband's brother's voice practically sent her into cardiac arrest right then and there. It only reminded her what she had lost a few moments ago.

"In the closet," she responded, barely daring to breathe.

The nursery door slammed open, and at the sound of a high-pitched laugh, Dorcas let the tears flow down her cheeks.

"And who might you be, dear boy?" He asked condescendingly.

"Michael McKinnon," he responded with a defiance in his voice.

"John, I think this one should be for you," Voldy stepped aside to let John Hill walk into the room.

John Hill had been selected to be their secret keeper as he had been a family friend. He had befriended Marcus in his third-year and had had a bond with the McKinnon family ever since. That was all for nothing, it seemed, since he had just sold out Myles and Dorcas to Voldemort.

Myles had also been the one to inform Voldemort of his suspicion that Peter Pettigrew was the Secret Keeper for the Potters. Of course, he hadn't known he was correct at the time, but Peter's reaction did all the talking.

"It seems fitting, doesn't it?" John sneered at Michael.

"You coward! You absolute fucking bastard!" Michael yelled back.

Dorcas shut her eyes and said a short prayer. She wasn't very religious, but desperate people find faith too.

The oldest McKinnon brother's body dropped to the floor only seconds later. Dorcas really had to try not to weep now, as she could sense the two evil people's presence outside the closet door.

"Now, where is that baby?" Voldy spoke annoyed.

John kicked Asher's crib over before considering his answer.

"I would check the closet behind you, my lord."

Dorcas sucked in a deep breath right as all hell broke loose. She felt the wall come crashing in, heard lots of shouts, and could feel the heat from the curses being shot back and forth.

...

9:03

Marlene controlled her breathing as best as she could as she heard Michael drop to the floor. She had lost too many people in this dreadful war. Her mum, Marcus, Michael, and who knows what state Myles is in.

Most of the Order had occupied the roof, right above the window that had been opened. Michael was supposed to go in, grab Dorcas, Asher, and Myles, then leave. It seemed that Voldemort had had other plans.

"Now, where is that baby?" Voldy spoke annoyed.

Marlene wanted to punch the absolute shit out of him right now. She felt Sirius put a consoling hand on her shoulder, as Doodledorf walked over to them carefully.

"Marlene, I need you to put this cloak on and get Asher out of that house. I don't know what state Dorcas and Myles are in, but no matter what, please save your nephew."

She took James's invisibility cloak from him—not before questioning silently why he had it—and nodded in response. She hadn't even thought about if Myles and Dorcas were okay.

"Sirius, I need you to get on your motorbike and go to the Potters. People should be set up at Potter Manor by then, so take them there."

"I would check the closet behind you, my lord."

Suddenly, Dumbles levitated everyone above the roof and the wall came crashing in underneath them. His magic directed them all into the house and a battle started.

Marlene crawled through multiple sets of legs—which involved her cursing every entity above and cutting her forearms on the debris covering the floor. She slowly slid the closet door open to reveal a terrified looking Dorcas and a sleeping Asher. Merlin only knows how the child was still sleeping at this point.

"There's no time for questions! Get underneath this cloak, so we can get out of 'ere!" Marlene whisper-shouted.

Dorcas obliged quickly and handed Asher to Marlene, who took him into her arms carefully. The two women stood upright and ran right behind Voldemort, who was having trouble fighting off all the curses being sent his way.

They took off the cloak to run down the stairs, but that proved to be a mistake as a jet of green light whirred right past Marlene's ear. It hit Dorcas right on the chest. She crumpled in a heap next to her husband, which is what widened Marlene's eyes.

Must get out of here!

"Well, well, well, so close yet so far, little McKinnon," John taunted.

"You have no right to call me that anymore. Get out of my way," Marlene spoke with a slightly wavering voice.

She couldn't get her brother's lifeless, blue eyes out of her head.

"Nuh-uh, it's not going to be that easy. As you can see, it wasn't that easy for either of your brothers," John laughed at the end of his sentence.

"How dare you bring them up like they mean nothing!" She shouted back, shifting Asher in her arms.

"Cute baby," John spoke, before sending another jet of green light at Asher's forehead.

However, when it hit him, it rebounded off off his forehead—not without leaving a lightning scar—and hit the very person who sent the death curse. John Hill had taken his very last breath.

Marlene didn't waste another second before bursting out of that house, with a now crying Asher in her arms. She swung her leg over Sirius's motorbike and positioned Asher in between them. Holding on as tightly as possible, she prayed that the Potter house would be unscathed.

...

Lily laughed as James twirled her around the room as the vinyl ceased it's spinning. Their Halloween had been quite uneventful—just how they liked it—and they were celebrating with a short dance.

Dancing reminded them of all the Hogwarts parties that they had attended. It got them on their feet—even if Lily's ankles were swollen—and it also consumed time, something they seemed to have a lot of these days.

Regulus had ditched them to write another letter with the excuse of not wanting to watch them be lovebirds.

"So, I was thinking about names and I think we should name her-" Lily started, but was quickly cut off by James.

"Wait, did you just say her?" James creased his eyebrows.

"Did I not tell you? The last time the midwife was here she confirmed that we're having a girl," Lily sat down next to him on the couch.

"No, you didn't tell me! I would've freaked out like I am right now! We're having a baby girl!" James nearly shouted.

"Shhh, James! You're gonna wake up Harry!" Lily spoke with quiet laughter.

"Alright, alright—anyway—you said something about names?" He chuckled a bit at his own reaction.

"I was thinking that we could name her after your mum."

"Euphemia is an awful old person sounding name," he responded with a hint of laughter in his voice.

"Well, how about Mia then? It's what everyone would call her anyway," she proposed.

"Mia... I like that. How about-" His question was cut off by a sharp knock at the door.

Lily and James's hands both flew to the coffee table for their wands. In a swift movement, they were over by the door, looking out the peephole.

There stood a wild looking Sirius, a disheveled Marlene, who was holding a crying baby.

"That's Asher!" Lily spoke urgently.

"Sirius, what was I most embarrassed of until the end of fifth-year?" James inquired in a curt tone through the door.

"Your middle name, you thought it was an old person name," he responded quickly.

"Marlene, what color did my mum dye Petunia's hair after second-year had ended?" Lily asked.

The only reason that was her security question was because Marlene was over at Lily's house that day, and could remember how loudly Petunia screeched at the mirror.

"Orange," she promptly said.

James opened the door and embraced a shaking Sirius as soon as he stepped forward. Lily coaxed Marlene inside and took Asher from her arms.

They walked into the sitting room—after locking the door quite a few times—and sat down on the couches.

"Voldy paid my brother and Dorcas a visit," Marlene's voice was nothing but a croak.

Lily's shoulder acted as a pillow for Marlene's head. She had always been the best at consoling people. Lily threw her arm around Marlene and used the other to hold Asher.

"Doodles asked us to come here and take you to Potter Manor. I think more Order people are supposed to be there," Sirius spoke in a monotonous manner.

"Why can't we just stay here? There's a lot of protection on this house," James questioned.

"It seemed like Dumbledore just wanted the entire Order in the same place. I dunno what to tell you mate," Sirius said back.

"Well, seeing as I am not allowed to apparate, Marlene and James should apparate there with the kids. They're the ones Voldemort was after," Lily spoke agitatedly.

She had been quite annoyed when the midwives had told her she wasn't allowed to apparate anymore. They said that she shouldn't have been the first time she was pregnant either, but Lily had never been one to rely on others.

"Regulus should apparate over too. We'll take my motorbike," Sirius suddenly jumped off the couch.

Regulus must've heard all the ruckus downstairs, as he appeared in the sitting room holding Harry. He gently rocked the baby back in forth in his arms, although he did look extremely uncomfortable.

"What's going on?" He asked, as all worried eyes were on him.

"We're paying a visit to Potter Manor."

...

Sirius ushered Lily quickly off of his bike and helped her to the front door. They walked briskly, without saying a word to each other. The bugs could probably smell the tension in the air.

He stuck his wand into the special lock Moody had installed and watched as the door opened. It seemed they were the last ones there, as the entire Order sat before them.

"What are we going to name our child?" James asked Lily pointedly.

"Mia, after your mum," Lily answered, before being enveloped into a hug by Remus.

"Who was the secret keeper?" Marlene asked Sirius, with her wand pointed at his throat threateningly.

"John Hill."

They were all there. Remus, Mary, James, Lily, Sirius, Marlene, Frank, and Alice. They all survived the war.

VOLDEMORT INCARCERATED FOR LIFE

Not too long ago, Lord Voldemort killed Myles McKinnon (27), Michael McKinnon (31), and Dorcas McKinnon (27). May they rest in peace. See page three for details about their public funerals.

Now, he has been sentenced to life in Azkaban after receiving the dementor's kiss. Authorities believe that by receiving the dementor's kiss, he will never be able to rise to power again.

We owe the end of the war to a secret organization called the Order of the Phoenix. Ran by Albus Dumbledore, all of its members will be awarded with First Class Order of Merlin for their brave heroics.

Aurors and the Ministry ask that everyone stays cautious and alert, as their still are Death Eaters out there. If you or a loved one has any information on any Death Eater whereabouts, please do not hesitate to contact the Ministry of Magic.

Author's Note:

I ACTUALLY CANT BELIEVE THAT WAS THE LAST CHAPTER!!

The only loose end that I am aware of is who was writing the poetry, but that shall be taken care of in the epilogue. (Any final guesses?) If there are any other loose ends you come across though, please don't hesitate to comment about it!

I apologize for killing nearly the entire McKinnon family, but at least it wasn't jily...

The epilogue is published already as well, so if you keep scrolling, it should appear there for you to read. There's an a/n after that for you to read too because I have a few questions!

Lmao anyways thanks for reading
