THE MORROW WOMAN finally drove past the 'Welcome to Charming' sign, relief sinking in. Randi was still nervous, and scared, but at least she was finally here and would soon find out what was going on. Her tired, bloodshot eyes stared at the road ahead, her eyelids heavy. It was obvious that she had only taken a short break, and only to get an hour of sleep in her car at a rest stop.
But that didn't matter, she had to know what happened to Happy.
As agreed with her dad, she drove straight to the hospital where her brother, her father and Gemma were. At least Happy couldn't be dead if he was in the hospital, right?
Again she inhaled sharply as the horrible thought crossed her mind, her fingers gripping the steering wheel tightly. Letting out a shaky breath, she shook her head and drove a little faster until she finally saw the huge building in front of her. Randi's heart ached now that she realized she was back home, a strange feeling of peace setting in despite the worry she felt.
The brunette wasted no time and pulled her car into the nearest free parking space, turned off the engine and slipped out the door before rushing towards the building, leaving everything in her car for now.
The keys jingled in her hand as she pushed open the large doors and asked the Lady behind the information desk where she needed to go. And three minutes later she reached the floor where Happy's room was supposed to be. Her combat boots hit the floor faster, the depressing halls nauseating.
She absolutely hated hospitals, the smell of disinfectant and illness. It was hard to describe, but she had seen the inside of the hospital often enough as a small kidᅳ thanks to the heart defect she had inherited from her mother.
When she finally found the right room, she didn't even bother to knock, instead she pushed down the handle and stormed inside. Four pairs of eyes fell on her, one of them more than surprised, as if he hadn't expected her to come.
"Who the hell called her?!", Happy barked, barely able to sit up on his own. But he did it anyway, trying not to let the pain show.
"I called her, brother", Clay grumbled before striding toward his daughter, a warm but tired smile on his lips as he pulled her to his chest, just holding her for a while. "Glad you're here, sweetheart."
Randi melted into her father's embrace, exhaling loudly as his familiar scent filled her nose. She hadn't seen him in almost a year either and missed him. "Hey Dad, thanks for calling."
She pulled away from the gray-haired man only to be pulled into a tight embrace by none other than her mother, Gemma, bringing a smile to her lips as she wrapped her arms around the matriarch's waist.
"I missed you so much, baby", Gemma murmured against Randi's hair, rubbing her youngest's back up and down. "I'm so glad you're finally back home."
"Me too, mom", the brunette said softly, her words not even a lie, before she pulled away with a small smile and ran her long fingers through her hair. "I've missed you guys."
"Not changed one bit." With a lopsided grin, Jax sauntered over to her as well, wrapping his arms around her. Placing a kiss on the top of her head, the blonde biker pulled away and ruffled his sister's hair, chuckling as she whacked his arm. "Jesus, have you even taken breaks? You look like you've been awake for three days."
Randi rolled her eyes before shrugging her shoulders guiltily. "Wanted to get here as fast as possible."
Her gaze landed on Happy, who was still not happy at all that she was here. Maybe he was more hurt than she had thought because she hadn't come with him right away, because she had told him again that she didn't want to give up on her dream. And that look of him hurt, a tight knot forming in her chest.
"What happened?", she asked firmly while slowly approaching the bed. "Jesus, what the hell.."
Only now did Randi notice all the injuries. Happy's face was covered in small cuts, some of which were stitched up, others not. A dark purple bruise was forming under his left eye, a laceration on his eyebrow. But that wasn't all.
His whole shoulder was bandaged, the blood slowly seeping through the fabric of it, which definitely needed to be changed soon. Scratches and other small cuts were on his arm and chest and another bandage around his ribs.
Holding her breath, Randi ran her fingertips over Happy's chest carefully while the others just watched in silence as Happy was unable to take his eyes off the brunette, clearly still in love with her.
"You shouldn't be here", Happy grunted, gently grasping her wrist. "You look awful, woman."
Randi raised an eyebrow, not sure if she should be amused or angry. "Is that how you greet a woman, huh? I don't think so."
Before he could argue, she held up a hand. "Do you have any fuckin' idea how scared I was when Dad called me and wouldn't give me any information? Do you really think I'm going to stay home? I may have left you, but you know exactly how important you still are to me."
"Ever looked in the mirror? An hour longer and you probably would've fallen asleep behind the damn wheel, Miranda", Happy snarled, inhaling sharply as another pain shot through his body. "Just to see me? It's not damn worth it."
"You know, if you weren't already in pain, I'd punch you right now", Randi muttered, an insulted undertone in her soft voice. Sighing, she plopped down on the bed, her eyes darting around to look at everyone. "Now, will someone explain to me what happened?"
"Hap was hit by a car just before he reached Charming. The driver was in the wrong lane, drunk as hell, and rammed Hap's bike", Jax explained with a bitter snort, his arms crossed in front of his chest. "That idiot drove so fast that Happy was thrown straight through the windshield."
"Butᅳ", Randi stared speechlessly at Happy, who only sent Jax a glare. "Don't look at him like that, I would've found out anyway! So it was a stupid accident and not an attack by the Chinese?"
Not that this was any better, but at the same time it kind of was.
"No, not an attack." Clay assured her, his hands braced on the foot of the bed. "But the accident could've turned out much worse. Luckily Hap was close enough to Charming and St. Thomas already."
"Clay, she knows enough", the SAA warned. No matter how much respect he had for the man in front of him, he didn't want Randi to worry about him even more. That was the reason he didn't want her to come in the first place, not because he didn't want to see her. "I didn't fuckin' die, that's all that matters."
"Fine." Clay raised his hands in surrender and decided to leave the rest to Happy. He pushed himself away from the bed, slapping Jax on the shoulder. "Come on, let's ask lieutenant Jarry if there's any news on the driver."
"Can we leave you guys alone?", Jax asked seriously, but there was still some amusement in his light tone.
"Hey, I'm still here too to watch them", Gemma snorted with a slight grin and patted Clay's shoulder as he placed a fleeting kiss on her lips. "Let me know if there's any news, okay?"
"Make sure to get him", Happy growled lowly, a menacing gleam in his eyes. "That bastard ruined my bike, I'm not letting him get away with it."
"Really? Your bike is more important to you than your condition?" Shaking her head, Randi groaned. Actually, she shouldn't be surprised anymore, she knew how sacred their bikes were to the Sons. "But I'd love to meet that idiot too, tell him what I think about him driving while being drunk."
"We all know that this will end with a punch in the face", Jax teased his sister as he planted another kiss on the top of her head and then looked over at Happy. "You get rest until Tara tells you otherwise, got it?"
Even after getting shot, Tara had wanted to go back to work after she heard that Happy got injured, wanting to make sure that he was properly taken care of since he was part of her family.
"I'm not a damn six year old", Happy grumbled, but as much as he hated to admit it, he wouldn't be able to get up easily at the moment. "Call when you know more."
"We will, brother", Clay promised, looking at Randi again. "Are you staying with us as long as you're here? If so, let me know when to pick you up from here, I don't wanna see you driving yourself today."
"Yeah, I think so. And no, I'm driving alone", Randi argued sternly. She couldn't just leave her car here for days and block parking spaces. "See you later, dad."
"The last word isn't spoken here", Clay replied determinedly, pointing a finger at his daughter before he left the room with Jax, hardly able to wait to finally spend time with his kid after almost a year.
"Don't let me bother you", Gemma chirped as she sat down in a chair and crossed one leg over the other, pretending to leaf through a magazine. In reality, however, she kept an eye on them, watching her daughter and Happy.
Randi wasn't stupid, she knew her mom would listen to every word. Typical Gemma. She sighed softly when Happy's face twisted in pain as he sat up a little straighter. If the accident had turned out worse..
Again she shook off the thought and reached for Happy's hand, wrapping hers around it. "Please listen to Tara, okay? I know you hate being told what to doᅳ but this is different."
Happy just grunted, but for her sake he would even listen to Tara. Instead of answering, he placed his free hand on top of hers, looking at her intensely. "Did you really come just to see me?"
"Of course", Randi shot back, somewhat irritated. "You know how I feel about you, Hap. I would've never found peace if I hadn't come to check on you. I was scared shitless."
Randi's eyes filled with tears, tears of worry and relief at the same time that Happy was responsive. Swallowing softly, she squeezed his hand, lowering her head to rest it on his hand that was on top of hers.
"Hey, I'm okay, little girl", Happy croaked, a wave of guilt ripping through him even though he himself hadn't caused the accident. "I'm glad you're here."
"I can't imagine what ifᅳ", a sob caught in Randi's throat, the first tears dripping down onto Happy's hand. "Shit, I could've lost you."
"Randi, stop." Happy pulled his hand from under her head to run it over her hair, grunting softly. "I'm here, okay? That's all that matters."
Happy hated seeing her like this, so worried about him, even though they weren't even a couple anymore. If everything wasn't so complicated, he would make sure to get his Old Lady back, fight for her. But would it be fair to ask her to stay? To give up her dream in Seattle for him? No.
Randi nodded eagerly at his words, a sniff filling the room. When she finally lifted her head again, she quickly wiped away some tears. "Sorry, didn't mean to cry on you right away."
"Stop apologizing", he said firmly, this time it was him who took her hand. "Why don't you stay in our house? You might have to fill the fridge, but everything else is there."
Gemma pricked up her ears as the silence stretched between the two and crooked an eyebrow. As much as she wanted her daughter to stay with Clay and her, there was a chance that Happy and Randi would get closer againᅳ which would also be good for her in the long run.
"Iᅳ are you sure?", the brunette asked, secretly longing to see their house again. A house where she had made so many beautiful memories with Happy. "You don't have to do this, reallyᅳ"
Happy interrupted her with a firm look, squeezing her hand. "I want it. It's your home too."
"Well, if you really don't mind..", trailed the brunette, the smallest smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Then I'll gladly accept the offer. I've missed the houᅳ"
Randi didn't get to finish her sentence when suddenly the door burst open and a woman, not unknown to Randi, stormed into the room, agitated.
"Baby!" Julia rushed towards the bed after entering the room, earning sneers from not only Randi but also Gemma and Tara. "Shit! Are you okay?"
"Sorry, I couldn't stop her", Tara apologized to Happy, her eyes widening when she spotted Randi. "You're here!"
"Hey Tara." Randi smiled in the direction of her best friend, but was too irritated and confused right now to greet her properly. Instead, she looked at Julia. "Baby? What the hell is going on here?"
"It's none of your business", the blonde shot back arrogantly, as if she had the right to do so. Then her gaze fell on the bedspread on which Happy's and Randi's hands were still intertwined. "You have no business being here anymore."
"Who the hell told you that he's here?", Gemma asked, slowly getting up from her seat, her tone almost threatening.
"Overhead the guys talk", Julia shrugged, ignoring the others angry glances. She wasn't going to let Randi win her man back. Carefully, she stroked Happy's cheek, sighing as he smacked her hand away. "Hey, what's going on?"
"I should, uhᅳ", Randi stuttered before Happy could utter a word, shaking her head more at herself as she shot a painful glance in Happy's direction and got up. "I gotta go. Would be cool if you could give me a call once you're feeling better."
Holding back new tears, Randi stormed past Tara and Gemma and out of the room, definitely needing some fresh air before she'd throw up. Happy had assured her he was single, and now this?
"Randi waitᅳ", Happy was cut off by a heavy cough that ripped through him, followed by an annoyed, painful groan. "Get the hell out", he snapped at the blonde who now hovered over him, giving him no space to breathe.
"But..why?" Julia didn't understand, and that pissed her off even more. "I thought you'd be happy to see me."
"You heard him, sweetheart", Gemma drawled with a dangerous grin, her arms crossed over her chest. "You're not welcome here. And now I'm gonna check on my daughter. You know, the one you just told she isn't welcome here."
"No, stay", Tara said, waving her hand. "My shift is over anyway. I'll go check on her."
Gemma studied her daughter-in-law, squeezing her arm. "You sure, baby?"
"Yeah, wanted to have a coffee with her anyway before she leaves again", the brunette quickly responded. "You mind if I spend the afternoon with her? I promise she's all yours later."
Not entirely happy but also not mad at the doctor, Gemma nodded with a sigh, knowing Tara missed spending time with her best friend just as much as she missed spending time with her daughter. "Sure, as long as you bring her home later."
Tara agreed with a nod. "I will."
"Tara", Happy croaked, finally able to sit up again, ignoring the throbbing pain in his shoulder and chest. "Tell Randi to come back here later."
"I'll let her know. And now get some rest", Tara scolded him playfully, yet there was enough seriousness in her tone for Happy to know that she was in fact serious about it. "And you", she sneered at the blonde. "Get out of here or I'll call security."
Sighing as Happy just grunted, Tara shook her head at how stubborn he was before leaving the room to follow her sister-in-law but not before actually calling security on Julia because a part of her knew that if that bitch wouldn't leave, Happy or Gemma would make sure that she wouldᅳ and not in a friendly way.
