This story is set in the 19th century

Sonny's POV
The first time I saw him, I was 18...no no 19.
It was summer, around June and the park was full of people but I was only able to see him.
He was the only one I saw in that sea of people.
I tried to find a way to describe the feeling, I spent days and days but it was impossible.
Your body and your mind are so overwhelmed that putting it down to words it's not enough, you have to feel it yourself.
Every other story would have been like this: we randomly met and somehow we ended up together, but ours was different.
Each time I saw him it was seeing a field of dandelions blossom.
His golden and luminous hair felt soft even by just looking at them, his eyes were able to look directly into your soul and honestly, he could have asked me the moon with those eyes and I would have given it to him.
The way he acted around his friends, always composed and polite, I wondered how kind his heart was.
Everyone loved him, he was impossible to hate and sometimes I envied him cause I wasn't even close to what he was.

No one POV
"Ryan, you coming with us?"
"Sorry what?"
"We agreed on having a drink at the pub...did you forget?" His friend George said with his hat under his arm.
"No. Of course, I didn't forget. Let's go"
And Sonny had to say bye to Harper.

"My parents want me to marry Ashlyn but I love Emily...this is unfair" George complained.
"Then marry Emily"
Sonny didn't see the problem.
"Ryan, you know I wish I could do that but Ashlyn comes from a noble and rich family. Emily doesn't have anything"
"Love goes beyond money. Love goes beyond anything" Sonny said staring at his drink.
"Oh, Ryan...I wish I could just follow my heart, just like you"
George was desperate and Sonny understood his pain, he couldn't even imagine being with someone he doesn't love.
"And what about you, my friend?"
"There's someone, a special person"
"Tell me, who is it?" George was too curious to not know.
"I can't tell you maybe one day I'll be able but just know that their love is like finally coming back home after a long trip"

So that's how Sonny's obsession started...
Forget the muses that inspired ancient Greek poets, Harper beats all of them.
Just a look brings a flood of words and a 'hi' is capable of messing up your head.
Sonny was head over heels for the boy and not even for a second the thought of being wrong cross his mind cause with Harper everything was right and legit.
So the boy spent every single minute of his free time writing.
Writing poems that no one will read except for maybe Harper and the wind.

"Ryan...Ashlyn invited me to a picnic and she asked me for someone willing to read a couple of poems"
"George, you're aware that my compositions are private"
"I know my friend, no one is asking you to do that. Just read something to entertain"
Somehow Sonny agreed and found himself heading to the park.
Ashlyn prepared the best picnic ever, not a thing was missing...not even his muse.
Harper was there with his perfect suit that made him look even more divine.
"You decided to come" his voice didn't sound like heaven, probably heaven sounded like him.
"Yes, I did" Sonny smiled.
They chose to read Shakespeare, a classic, and Sonny noticed that Harper was fully captured by the story and honestly it was all that mattered to him.
He didn't care if the others weren't listening.

When the picnic ended, Harper dragged the boy further in the park.
"Thank you for reading for us" the boy said so softly that Sonny's heart melted.
"What are you doing?"
Harper was climbing a tree.
"You're gonna ruin your clothes"
But Harper didn't care and gestured Sonny to come.
So the boy climbed the tree and they sat on a branch watching the sunset.
"Egyptians thought the sun died each day..." Harper said, his golden hair sparkling cause of the sun.
"He died and born each day only to gave us light"
Sonny could listen to his voice all day, forget about writing or playing polo.
"But I think about the moon too...chasing the sun every day but never being able to reach it"
"Sounds like a tragic love story"
"George told me that you write" Harper turned to look at him this time.
"Yeah, I do. I'm working on a love story like this one but maybe the moon reaches the sun this time"
Harper smiled cause Sonny had the talent to turn everything into a poem.
"You'll have to let me read a poem once"
"I promise I will"
Sonny kept his promise, once in a while he left a poem for Harper in different locations around town.
Sometimes in the woods or hidden somewhere near the well.

"I wonder who it could be..."
Sonny covered Harper's eyes.
"I know it's you"
Harper turned around and smiled at the curly boy.
"You didn't leave me any poem" Harper pouted cause it was their thing, he even had a box at home with all the previous ones.
"I didn't have time so I surprised you instead"
Harper glared at him with crossed arms.
"You're lucky you're cute"
So they wandered in the woods, Harper picking up some flowers now and then.
When they laid on the grass, the boy did a flower crown and put it gently on top of Sonny's curls almost like a laurel crown.
"Thanks"
Sonny looked into those kind eyes and thanked the universe for being able to look at them.
"I have to leave for a couple of days..." Harper confessed while his head was in Sonny's lap.
"Where to?"
"To north...my family wants me to meet someone"
Sonny's fingers stopped in Harper's hair which cause the boy to sit up.
"But I'm not gonna marry anyone, my heart is already taken...by you" he tried to reassure Sonny.
"Who is she?"
"It doesn't matter Sonny..." Harper sighed.
"Yes cause she's supposed to be your wife while I wish I could be a woman just to marry you"
"But she's not you! No one could ever replace you" Harper stated.
"I could be poor or dying but as long as you're with me I don't care" the blonde boy ended.

Harper's departure hit Sonny hard, he wasn't able to write anymore.
He was having writer's block or a crisis, he wasn't sure, he just knew that he missed Harper.
He missed him like sunflowers miss the sun on a cloudy day.
The blonde boy sent him letters to tell him everything that was going on while Sonny just replied with a poem followed by a 'miss you' or a 'come back home soon' and each time a smile grew on Harper's face.
"What are you smiling at?" The young lady, Melissa, that's supposed to be his future wife asked.
"Nothing"
Harper hated nosy people.
He and Sonny had to hide but he loved it like that, what they had was only theirs and it felt like the world didn't deserve to know.

Harper ended up coming back home earlier than planned, in fact when Sonny met the boy in the woods he was surprised.
Harper went to hug him right away burying his face in the chest.
"You're home early..."
"She read one of your poems behind my back, the poems that were for me!"
Harper may have sounded like a maniac but they were only for him cause Sonny wrote them for him, not even George was allowed to read them.
"So I left. I tried to be nice but she didn't respect my boundaries so..."
The boy stayed attached to Sonny, not only for comfort but also cause he kissed him a lot.
"Apart from that how was she?" Sonny changed the subject, kinda.
"Actually ok. She's respectable and kind, basically the perfect wife if you want to fit in society..."
"There's a but..."
"That's not what I want Sonny..."
Harper looked at his eyes that showed little speckles of different shades of blue due to the sunlight.
"I don't need to fit in society...I just need you and that's enough for me..."
Sonny understood Harper, he really did.
He would give away everything to have a free life with him.
"Harp...you know that I want that too-"
"Then kiss me...kiss me and tell me you'll stay with me..." Harper begged.
Instinctively Sonny kissed him, he kissed him deeply and didn't want to pull away like two magnets.
"Harp...I can't do that to you..."
Harper stayed silent, the knot in his throat blocking all the words.
"I can't do that exactly cause I love you...I never loved anyone like you...I would give away my life for you but you can't do that..."
Sonny was killing himself by saying that.
"I can do that"
Harper was on the verge of crying, his shirt too tight around his neck.
"You come from a rich family...you're smart and handsome...you have a whole life ahead of you. While I have nothing...I chose to write and we all know how that's gonna go..."
Harper didn't want to listen to the end of it.
He unbuttoned a few buttons of his shirt and walked away.
"It's already written, Harp"
"No! I refuse to believe it...it's written that we have to be together"
Now Harper was crying, he cried cause he knew Sonny was right and it didn't matter how hard he tried to convince himself.
It was how it worked and they were no one to go against society.
"You'll always be the muse of my poems and no one will able to hold and keep my heart except for you" the boy tried to quiet Harper's sobs.
"Even if you get married and have kids, I'll love you and write for you"
"You promise?"
Sonny nodded and kissed his boy one last time.

-years later-
"Darling...you have a letter"
"If it's another letter from my father I swear..."
Melissa never understood Harper's hate for his family.
"Don't know...it doesn't even have a name or an address. Wonder how it got here"
The woman handed him the envelope and he didn't waste any time opening it.

My dear Harp,
after years I finally found the courage to write to you.
I never stopped writing but couldn't find the heart to send anything.
Don't know what changed but I wanted to know how you were doing...tell me everything about your new life.
Mine is boring, I just write and before you ask me...no, no lady for me but I'm happy or at least I can consider myself as happy.
I'll wait for your news and will always miss you.

I miss him like sunflowers miss
The sun on a cloudy day.
And he was my sun, able to warm
My miserable should with just one look.

I missed him like a mariner missed
calm water after a storm.
Limpid water show my reflection
As in narcissus' story but I
Go beyond and I meet his eyes
For which I fell.

I miss him like a soul miss
Its body once in hell
But it doesn't scare me, it scares
Me the frailness of my mind
Who might forget him
Who might leave behind the warmth of his touch.

Harper cried as soon as he reached the end...they were happy tears mixed with a bitter feeling.
"Are you ok darling? Who sent the letter?"
"A special person" was all Harper said.
The moon didn't reach the sun but he never stopped trying...
