Amathyst POV
I woke up really early. I forced myself to get ready for school today.
It was my last day to stay in the music program and my best friend Flynn desperately wanted me to find music again.
It had been a year since my father had died and I couldn't look at music the same way without him.
My mother tried to get me to talk about him to a therapist or at least stay in music class but it was no use.
"Amathyst, come on," My mother called from the kitchen.
"Coming," I said as I threw on my favorite sweatshirt with jeans and matching shoes.
I grabbed my backpack and also my notebook.
When I got down to the kitchen, my brother Carlos was already up and eating cereal while watching Buzzfeed Unsolved.
"Amathyst, honey, your teacher called yesterday," My mother started to say as I sat down and started to eat. "You need to perform or else you are out of the music program."
"I know mama," I said as I ate my breakfast.
"Don't worry mi amor, I know you'll do great," She said.
I rode my bike to school and waited for my friend Flynn outside the music classroom.
"Today's the day Amathyst," Flynn nudged me excitedly.
"Yeah, hopefully," I muttered as we took a seat in class.
As a final project, I had chosen a song I really liked and hoped to impress everyone, and myself.
"Okay thank you, Nick," Mrs. Harrison said. Suddenly it was my turn. I sat down at the piano and just froze. It was so embarrassing that I just left.
Behind me, I could hear my arch-nemesis Carrie make a remark and Flynn defended me before running after me.
---
Later that night, I was working on clearing out my dad's studio. I found some old CDs and thought it would be cool to play it.
Just like that my world was turned upside down.
Three guys had appeared in front of me and we looked at each other and screamed.
I was super scared because they had just appeared in front of my eyes.
I ran out and was screaming. "Mommmm!" I said as I saw her and Carlos by the front door.
"What's wrong mi flor?" She asked me.
"I saw something in the garage," I said.
"Honey, I know things can be hard. I can help you clear out the garage tomorrow. It's getting late, you're probably tired," My mom said. She clearly thought I was talking about dad.
"Okay," I said, I didn't fight it.
---
The following night, I went back to the garage before my mom came down to help me.
"Nothing's here," I said to myself, laughing a bit.
I continued to pack stuff but then my mom texted me and said she had a headache and was going to bed. I didn't mind it and continued to clean up stuff.
"You know, being alone out here can be scary," I heard a voice behind me say. I froze and slowly turned to be met with the same three faces as yesterday.
I opened my mouth to scream but one of the guys shouted. "Please don't scream again. It's scary."
"I'm scary?" I questioned, as I chuckled. "I'm delusional right now I swear. It's from the lack of sleep and this is all in my head."
"Let us explain," The blonde one said. "We're ghosts and we don't know why we are here."
"Is this real?" I questioned out loud.
"I'm not entirely sure," One said.
"Well let us introduce ourselves so you don't panic. I'm Alex. The brooding one is Luke and the happy puppy is Reggie," Alex greeted.
I felt myself calm down a bit and let them explain why they were here. Turns out us four are all a bunch of misfits.
They liked music and freely expressing themselves. They were in a band called Sunset Curve, consequently the CD I played with their music on it.
Alex was bisexual (for the sake of this story he is, this is not bisexual erasure) and loved staying up late and reading novels. Reggie was super energetic and loved to ask questions about the 25 year gap since they were gone. Luke begrudgingly talked to me but was also surprisingly sweet.
-----
It's been a few months since the guys and I have been playing together. Tonight was our performance at the Orpheum.
Over the last few months, Alex, Luke and Reggie had gotten close to me. Flynn would always comment abut out connection.
I didn't want to admit it but I really liked the guys. We related to each other and connected so much, it seemed like it was meant to be.
It was getting late and I started pacing around the dressing room. We were supposed to go on stage in a few minutes.
"Hey girl," Flynn smiled as she walked in. "Are the guys here?" She asked, fixing her hair and smirking.
"No, they should have been here. They promised they would be here. They promised the wouldn't bail again," I said, remembering the school dance they missed.
"Its okay Amathyst. They'll come," Flynn said as she gently grabbed my hand.
"What if they ran out of time? What if those jolts got to them and they're gone? What am I supposed to do now? They were my everything."
I ran out of the dressing room just as the stage director dude came in to tell me it was time to go on stage.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I ran into the alleyway next to the Orpheum.
"Dad, what am I supposed to do?" I asked as I looked up at the stars in the sky. "Give me a sign, any sign. I just need to know it's going to be alright."
I looked down at the ground and wiped my eyes, careful not to get eyeliner everywhere.
I looked up to see an old lady hand me a blue butterfly origami.
A sign. A sign to keep moving.
I smiled at the lady as she walked away.
"Thank you papa," I said towards the sky before running back inside to perform.
"Am, where are you going?" Flynn asked as she saw me again.
"Signs," I said as I showed her the blue butterfly origami.
I went up on stage and placed the butterfly at the edge of the piano.
I sighed and started to sing with everything I had, knowing I would most likely be doing this alone.

Reggie, Alex and Luke appeared when I hit the chorus. I smiled with tears in my eyes as Luke broke free of Caleb's control and joined us on stage.
This was everything I had ever dreamed of. I was performing at the Orpheum with my best friends and had a crowd of people cheering us on and calling out my name.
People I didn't even know were dancing and singing along to the music we had created together. This was something I only wished my dad could see.
My mom and Carlos were in the audience and I could tell my mother had been crying.
Towards the end of the song, we all joined hands and bowed. They guys disappeared and I knew they were gone, they had crossed over.
-----
When I got back home, I told my mom i wanted to go to the garage real quick.
Opening the large doors, I sighed and smiled, reminiscing about the good times I had with the guys even if they were short lived.
"I want to say thank you. You three helped me to bring music back to my life. I don't know if you can hear me but you changed my life for the better. You inspired me to open up again and I just wish you were here to celebrate with me. I wish we had more time together," I whispered as tears threatened to fall. "If you were alive today, I would have introduced you to my family. We would have all been in music class together and Flynn would tease you endlessly. I just wish we could have had more time together. I love you guys." I said before sobbing quietly.
"We love you too," A voice called out from the darkness of the garage.
Confused and slightly frightened, I turned on the light to see my boys lying on the floor, teary eyed and clearly in pain.
"Wh-what are you doing? I thought you crossed over," I said as more tears spilled down my face.
"We wanted you to think that. We thought you would go straight to bed."
"Well no one wanted to listen to me when I told you she would come in here."
A jolt went through their bodies and they flickered in and out of existence.
"Please, please go join Caleb's club. At least you'll live. Please go. I can't lose you," I cried and begged.
"No music is worth making if it's not being made with you Amathyst," Luke smiled sadly as another jolt sent him back to the floor. He got up again and so did Reggie and Alex.
"I'm gonna miss you so much," I said before jumping into his arms and embracing him in a tight hug.
He squeezed be before pulling away in confusion.
"Wait, how can I touch you?" He asked.
Immediately, my hands went to his face and a smile appeared on his face as he held onto me. Luke started to glow and the stamp that was on him floated away.
"Alex, Reggie, come," I said, and motioned for them to join us.
We all hugged again and I have never felt happier. Their stamps also vanished and they also glowed.
"How do you feel?" I asked them.
"Stronger," They all replied in unison.
"Does this mean the hug thing will be more frequent?" Alex asked.
In response, I pulled them back into a big hug.
"I like this," Reggie replied, smiling through his tears.
"Did you mean what you said when you said you loved us?" Luke asked.
I blushed and turned away from them with a small smile. My face got hot and I tried to suppress my embarrassment.
"Well, I thought you had crossed over," I said, avoiding the question.
"But is it true?" Alex asked, spinning me around.
"And what if it was?" I questioned them, facing the three guys with my wavering stamina.
"What if we told you that we liked you too," Reggie grinned at me.
"I-i..." My voice faltered.
"And now that we can touch, we can do this," Alex said before giving me a forehead kiss.
Luke and Reggie did the same but on either cheek on the side of my face.
"You guys are the best," I said, grinning up at my three phantoms.
"And we have the best girlfriend," Luke smiled back.
"One more group hug please," Alex asked.
"Anything for you," I said as I pulled them back into a hug, embracing their touch. "My boys." I sighed happily.
"Our Amathyst."
