Just Getting Started

Having only been in the wizarding world since she was eleven, Lily found there were tonnes of things she didn't know. Thankfully, she had made friends with purebloods that could open her eyes to the world around her.

With the second week of their holiday already greeting them, James, Sirius, Marlene, and Lily had taken exploration to new heights. Lily told them about something from the muggle world and in turn, the three showed her some new wizard phenomenon.

Lily found it was her turn to blow their minds. She had carefully planned a day in the movie theatre, making sure to include plenty of soda and popcorn in her plan.

After their day out on the town–Lily had also planned on taking them around muggle London after the movie–she and Marlene had to attend a Ministry dinner that Henry was holding. The only way Lily's mother could get her to go was when she told her that she could bring a friend. A very nonenthusiastic Marlene was told she would be going.

Lily and Sirius took their time walking behind James and Marlene. The latter was having a very loud and bright conversation about various childhood memories. Lily and Sirius watched their friends and smiled at their laughter.

"Lily?" Sirius said, turning his head to face her.

"Yes, Sirius?" She replied, not taking her eyes from James.

He, of course, noticed this but did not point it out.

"The shopping you have planned later sounds lovely, but I was wondering if I could take Marlene out on a date," he said quietly.

"It's not as if I'm Marlene's keeper or something," Lily said grinning. Sirius rolled his eyes. "I guess that would be fine though, even if I have to deal with Potter on my own."

"Don't act as if you don't love that idea," Sirius smirked as Lily raised an eyebrow.

"Now, what's that supposed to mean?" Lily elbowed Sirius.

"Whatever I want it to."

"Yeah, that's exactly why I'm scared."

Sirius barked out a laugh.

...

As the movie ended and the credits began to play, Sirius grabbed Marlene's attention before she could start a conversation with Lily. He cleared his throat as Marlene looked expectant.

"Yes, Sirius?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Do you wanna go on a date?" He asked quietly. A smile lit up Marlene's face. "I checked with Lily to make sure it wouldn't ruin her plans, and she said it would be okay, but only if you want to, of course."

"How could I say no?" Marlene replied, smiling more when Sirius broke out into a smile.

"Well, then, off we go!" Sirius said, clearly excited.

He took Marlene's hand without a second thought. A grin could be plastered on his face for eternity because of the girl beside him and he wouldn't have it any other way. And neither would she.

...

"Muggle London never fails to astonish me," James sighed as the snow landed on his hair.

Lily grinned at the statement, happily walking down the slippery sidewalk next to him. Not a worried thought had made it into her head that day, and she could only chalk that up to how good the company she kept was.

Having time with just James was rare at Hogwarts, and boy was she enjoying it. Lily couldn't think of a time where she had laughed harder than with him, which, of course, could only be due to their inability not to make jokes every two seconds. Every moment that she spent with him made her think of more places they could venture off together, in order to stay in each other's company for longer.

She loved the McKinnons, but the longer she stayed next to James's side, the better.

"Every once in a while I daydream about being a muggle," Lily admitted, looking down when James looked over at her. "It seems like it would be so much easier."

"I've never really understood how muggles get through the day without magic," James said in response. "I don't think I could do it honestly."

"Really? I always took you for being more resourceful than that, Potter," she teased, making him laugh softly.

"Well, I'm glad you're not a muggle," James replied, the grin not leaving his face. "You wanna know why?"

"Of course, I do," Lily responded, clearly intrigued.

"If you were a muggle, Evans, then I probably would've never met you," James spoke with ease as Lily blushed. "Life wouldn't be complete without you."

As if the universe was listening to their conversation, Lily had slipped on a piece of ice that neither of them had seen, causing her to fall into James's arms. He, of course, caught her as she hit his chest.

Instead of backing up immediately as she should've, she let him hold onto her. He had his arms steadying her, holding her at her forearms. Lily knew for a fact that she was blushing like a girl who had never had a crush before, but she couldn't find it in herself to care.

Not sure if a few seconds or an eternity had passed, Lily was only focused on James's eyes. She never realized how much she liked the color hazel before then.
