RYDER MASON hated school. See, I feel like that entire sentence is contradicting, let's explain. She didn't suck at school, in fact, she took each step with an extensive amount of pride because of the fact that she's maintained a 4.0 GPA for her first 2 years of high school. Even as a young girl who's supposed to have her "whole life ahead of you", her one goal in life that she strived towards was graduation. She just wants to get through Senior Year with her head down, hood on, and walkman in hand.
LUKE PATTERSON, on the other hand, wanted the exact opposite. He hated school as well, but that was because he genuinely sucked at it. He was failing majority of his classes, and he spent a lot of time in summer school. Math wasn't his best subject, English was too "complex" as he liked to put it, chemistry was basically just math on steroids, and history deserved to die in a ditch. But none of that mattered, because Luke didn't need school for what he wanted to do in life. He and his best friends (also band mates) were gonna be legends. Their names would be everywhere, their music playing on every radio station. Packed out shows, tour after tour, groupies and fan girls everywhere. They were gonna make it big.
While RYDER wanted to be forgotten, LUKE wanted to be remembered.
It's the year 1994, and after she does something really stupid at a club the night before, she's approached in the middle of the hallway by the drama teacher, the music teacher, and Luke Patterson himself.
They wanted her to compose the songs for the upcoming school play, but most importantly, they wanted her to write the songs with Patterson. If they did this, both of them wouldn't have to partake in the music program's creative writing assignments for the 3-4 months they would spend working on the play.
Feeling trapped because she was literally bamboozled in the hallway, Ryder agrees to the terms, forcing herself to have to spend the next 3-4 months attached at the hip with Patterson and his band mates coming up with one of the biggest events ever in senior year.
Discussing things with both her friends and Luke's friends, maybe they'll help her realize that being remembered isn't such a bad thing after all....
