a/n here is the initial, original idea for the story. keep in mind the draft is incomplete and cuts off abruptly. the reason for that is because i was stuck on what to write next, i really liked the idea that i had, but the first execution of it was, as you will see, quite bad. i hope you enjoy it nevertheless.

original title: long distance ||atsuhina drabble||

original description: it's hard to keep a long-distance relationship...

especially when your boyfriend is far away and his rival in love is your new teammate.

original story:

"the moment you mess up, i am going to take him away from you"

is what atsumu whispered to kageyama just before hinata boarded the plane. it left a sour taste in both of their mouths but for wildly different reasons. for kageyama, watching his boyfriend boarding a flight hurt inside, he won't be able to see him for a while, simple texts and calls will barely suffice - what if he gets hurt? what if someone makes him cry? kageyama couldn't help but worry over the slightest thing.

as for atsumu... he longed to see hinata smile at him the way he smiles at kageyama, to hold his hand and never let go - his unrequited crush had grown into something beyond his comprehension. all he could do now is wait, wait for a moment when kageyama screws up and the other realizes that perhaps the one he has been looking for has been right in front of him this whole time.

first love isn't supposed to last. and it won't.

atsumu could feel kageyama's glare on his back as he followed hinata and handed his ticket to the flight attendant. rivals in love, huh? who would have ever thought? atsumu still remembers meeting kageyama at the training camp, back then he had no idea that this guy would become his biggest enemy.

he also remembers seeing hinata for the first time, he was intrigued by his skills and how passionate he was, he couldn't help but stare at him at any given moment - before he knew it he had fallen for the orange-haired boy. unfortunately, the oh-so-powerful setter had become the biggest obstacle.

atsumu had asked hinata for his number a while back, he texted him a lot which resulted in him finding out about the fact that hinata and kageyama were dating - it pissed him off. it really did. in his eyes, kageyama did not treat hinata right, calling him an 'idiot' all the time and so forth. maybe it was just a thing between them, but atsumu still couldn't accept it.

for years he harbored his crush for the shorter boy, he managed to get closer to him over the years and finally - they were on the same team away from kageyama and everybody else who could interfere with their relationship, which included the entire karasuno team - oh, how supportive they were of hinata and kageyama - but was hinata truly happy? kageyama was his first love, his first boyfriend, his first kiss - but not the last. first loves don't last and atsumu was going to make sure that hinata knows his worth.

all that he needed was a mistake. a mistake from kageyama. a tear from hinata.

then, it's over for them.

for now, all he could do was wait.

and wait.

and wait.

...

...

...

and wait for months to pass. to see hinata separated from kageyama for months.

"ugh, here he goes again..." hinata groaned as he placed his phone on the bench.

"what happened?" atsumu asked. he watched hinata furrow his eyebrows and sigh deeply in annoyance.

"kageyama again... i'm getting real tired of his accusations" hinata found the floor more comforting than the bench on top of which the phone was located, atsumu joined him in a heartbeat. he sat down in front of hinata, their legs crossed as they stared at each other for a minute.

"what did he do this time?" atsumu asked, barely holding down his smile.

"i didn't reply for two hours so he assumed i'm ignoring on purpose and got mad for no reason"

"wow... he really is something"

"one more stupid thing like this and i swear i will explode on him. i get that he cares and all that, but that's just possesive! i have my own life, we have training to do and he just assumes i'm always on my phone texting other guys! like, does he not have any trust in me?" hinata ranted, his eyes filled with sadness and rage.

"you can't keep going like this" atsumu said as he took hinata's hands. "i care about you and i want you happy - and seeing you like this makes me upset, makes me want to text kageyama myself and tell him to shut up"

"i know you care, atsumu... and i appreciate it greatly. you've been amazing since we met and i'm glad to have you in my life... thank you for supporting me"

I stopped here. I couldn't continue. I had no ideas. But the idea itself, to have Hinata leave and have Atsumu making a move, was too good to throw away.

I hope you enjoyed the way I rewrote it. I took a more poetic route.

I have another AtsuHina idea in my head but also a SakuAtsu idea. So we will see.
