|The King of Penguins Hockey|
After the shoot was finished, work was pretty much done for the day, so I went over to my job at Barnes and Noble.
So many emotions floated around my head as I lightly hummed a song all while restocking the shelves.
I changed my clothes in the car and put my hair up into fake twisty French braids.
Picking up books from my cart, "Ok so you go here," I dragged, mumbling under my breath, placing all the books on the shelf in the right spot. I then picked up more of the same books, turning back to the shelf, "And you guys, go here." Then continuing to hum my song.
"What song is that?"
Sidney's voice spoke out which made me jump 10 feet into the air, "Gah! What are you doing here?!" I whispered.
"Figured I'd bring you some coffee." He rolled his shoulders, gesturing to the two coffee cups he had in his hand from Starbucks.
A small smile crept on to my face as I bit my lip, strolling over to him, "Thanks."
Sidney held out my coffee cup for me to take, "I figured you like yours French vanilla with a little cream and sugar."
Looking up at his accurate assumption, shocked, "Yeah, I do." I smiled before the two of us sipped our coffees in unison.
"I also wanted to ask where you went today." Sid adjusted his baseball cap on his head.
I finished taking my sip before clearing my throat, "Oh no where, just work stuff," I paused, rethinking my words. "Not like here work stuff," I gestured to my surroundings. "Like over there work stuff," I then gestured my head to the practice facility across the highway. "But enough about me, how was your day?" Smiling, I walked back to my cart and put my hot coffee cup in the holder before the two of us started walking down the aisle so I could continue my job.
He nodded his head while sipping his coffee, "Pretty good, I'm a bit sore but other than that, I'm good. I have to go pick something up after this but yeah."
I bent over slightly to pick up a stack of books to put on the nearby shelf, "That's good." Taking more books than I could handle, two fell off the top of the stack in my arms near my feet.
"Oh here, um." Sid sat his cup down on the cart before the two of us dropped to our knees and knocking foreheads.
We winced in pain at the same time, giggling while rubbing our foreheads, "Here, I'll get'em." Sid mumbled.
I stood up, still rubbing my head and Sid picked up the two on the floor, "I'm sorry." I giggled because my cheeks heated up from embarrassment.
Sid held on to my two books while I quickly restocked the books on the shelves and relieved Sid from holding the two books in his arms, "No it's ok," Sid then grabbed his coffee from my cart. "It's my fault."
"No, it's mine, I dropped my books." My words poured out like a river as we spoke at the same time.
Sid decided to stay with me and kindly help restock a few shelves with me, "Hey, do you wanna go with me?"
"Where?" I shrugged my shoulders in confusion.
"Remember, I have to pick something up, do ya wanna go with me?"
A light crimson kissed my cheeks, "Um I guess, why not," From embarrassment, my head dropped while my smile crept on to my face as I pushed my one braid back behind my shoulder. "Just, uh, lemme finish restocking real quick."
I only had three novels left and a few children's books to restock before I could leave. Never in my life was I this excited. My heart raced and I felt hyper, like a little kid on candy.
After putting my cart away in the back and punching out, I rushed out to Sid with my purse and coffee.
Pulling my sunglasses out from the sleeve, my glasses in one hand and my sleeve in my mouth while I juggled everything, "Ok, where are we going?" I said with my sleeve between my teeth.
"It's a surprise."
The two of us walked side by side while I put my sunglasses sleeve away and pulling out my keys, unlocking my car, "Hey, where you going?"
I stopped in my tracks, in the middle of the parking lot, looking at Sid, "What'da mean? I'm going to my car, I'm going to follow you." I gestured to my Jeep not that far away from the two of us.
"Nah, Nah, Nah, your driving me." He pointed to me, emphasizing the word "your".
"Oh, come on!" I groaned, throwing my hands in the air, slapping the sides of my thighs.
"Oh, stop whining Syd, your gonna enjoy my car." Sid gestured for me to follow him.
Briefly, I turned around to lock my car again, then I trailed a few feet behind Sid. He pulled out his keys and flipped them around on his index finger, unlocking the car. I saw the Range Rover from work was in front of me and Sid kept walking towards it.
"Wait! Hang on!" I stopped dead in my tracks, almost tipping over. Sid turned around to see what I was yelling about. "This is your car?!" I emphasized, "your". "This is YOUR car?!"
"Yeah."
I chuckled darkly for a second, running my fingers through my light brunette hair, "You don't know how much of a love I have for these cars," Making my way over, I looked at every detail on the car. "2010 Range Rover in the color," I paused, dragging out my words as I tried to pinpoint the color of the car, "Stornoway Grey."
"Very good," Sid smirked before throwing his keys.
"Oh God no! No no no! This is your baby! I can't drive your baby!" I played hot potato with the keys, throwing them back to Sid, they almost flew over his shoulder when he caught them and threw them back.
"No, I insist."
Once again, I played hot potato with the keys, "What if I scratch her or get in a wreck?!"
Again throwing them back to Sid, he paused, "You're not gonna hurt my car, I know you won't because I trust you. Now I insist." Sid spoke in a more serious but trusting voice before throwing me the keys.
"Ok," I said hesitantly, still worried about wrecking or scratching his car.
The two of us hopped inside and placed our cups in the holders. I was absolutely blown away by the interior for it being a few years old.
"Wow, I'm impressed! This is in amazing condition!" I looked around the car while the two of us buckled up.
Sid then popped the sunglasses holder on the mirror, near my forehead, open to pull out his sunglasses, sliding them on to his face, "Well, I take care of my stuff."
I scoffed, "Pshh, I knew that! But it's an old baby," I paused, taking a second glance at him.
"And out come the Oakley's, Mr. Cool has entered the car."
Mocking Sid, I also pulled out my retro framed off-brand Ray Bands with polarized blue lenses, "Oh and out come the Ray Bands!"
"I'm too broke for those, yeesh!" I cringed while starting the car.
Sid directed me out on to the highway and on my way to Sewickley near my home in Bellevue.
Slow Motion by Juvenile then came on his car which made me groan, "Oh come on!" I half laughed.
"What?" He smiled widely, slightly questioning me.
"Of course this song comes on in your car!"
"I like it like that! She workin' that back! Dunno how to act! Slow Motion for me! Slow Motion for me! Movin' Slow Motion for me!" Sid sang and his voice cracking.
He was a god awful singer but it was funny as hell to watch and listen to.
Getting really excited, I tapped on the steering wheel violently, "Oh my God! That reminds me!" I opened my phone for Sid, "Go to my YouTube and into my watch later find a video titled Awkward Funny Moments and go to maybe 1:50?"
Sid took my phone and followed my instructions, "Uhh, ok," He then used the scrubber at the bottom of the screen and stopped at 1:50, "Oh God." I could see the smile on his face.
"I'm the worst singer in the league!" I heard his younger voice come from my phone. "I like it like that she working that back no uh Slow Motion for me, Slow Motion for me."
I started dying laughing at the video since I've seen it so many times, I could picture it.
Sidney and I busted out laughing, "Lord, I can't believe they got that on video!"
"I know right! I almost pissed myself the first time I watched that video in full!" I squeaked, beating on the steering wheel, wheezing.
"Ah, God," Sid wiped the tears coming from his eyes, "You're gonna wanna make this right." Sid gestured to my next turn which leads me down a road with very large old houses.
I moved and pivoted my head in so many directions out of the fascination of the old houses, "Ok where are we really going?" I emphasized, rolling my head to the passenger seat to look at Sid.
"Pull into this driveway." Sid then pointed to a driveway where a brick house sat behind a black iron gate and hedges around the front.
Pulling into the driveway, I noticed there was a keypad, so I stopped by it, rolling down my window, looking to Sid for instruction.
"1681."
"Odd password." I shifted my eyebrows a bit, pressing the buttons on the pad before the gate started to part in the middle which made my head perk up.
Rolling up the window all the way, I finally got to pull the car into the driveway all the way to the park.
The two of us put our sunglasses away and I slipped my phone into my back pocket of my work jeans.
Tossing Sid the keys to his car, my brain started to think, "Ok now I'm curious, is this your house?" I pointed from the house to Sid, he was halfway out of the car but I stopped him.
Sid thought about something for a minute, "Hell no, I wish though, but your pretty close though."
"Oh no, oh God no, please don't tell me you brought me to Mario Lemieux house?!" I groaned, closing the door.
"Maybe." A cheeky smirk played on his face as he locked the car, strolling up to the front porch.
"Sidney Crosby!" I squealed, running to stop him from going any further towards the house. Stopping dead in my tracks, the two of us collided, making him look down, "I literally look terrible! You could have at least told me we were going to Mario Lemieux house!"
"Yeah but then you'd be all worked up and try to put on more makeup or clothing to make you seem prettier than you already are."
Gesturing to myself, moving my hands up and down my body, "I am in my work clothes!"
"So? I still smell like the showers from practice, he's not gonna care."
"Well, I do!" I tried laughing off my nerves.
Sid groaned, walking past me and up to the front door, using his key ring with his car keys on them to find the front door key, "Oh come on, you look fine," Sid unlocked the door, letting me step inside the foyer of the house, "Hey I'm home! It's me, Sid!" He yelled into the house.
"In the kitchen Sid!" A female voice called out and the two of us walked inside, Sid leading the way through the halls to the kitchen.
A blonde lady was in the kitchen, sitting at the bar top counter, reading a book with a glass of wine. She turned in the stool, facing us with reading glasses and beaded strings attaching around her neck, holding the glasses. She was an aging woman but a beautiful woman with different shades making up her short poofy blonde hair.
"Sid, I'm so happy to see you, darling." She got up, letting her glasses dangling from her neck while the two kissed each other's cheeks on both sides.
"Same to you Nathalie." Sid smiled, then taking off his baseball cap.
I was half frozen when I realized the woman was Mario's wife, Nathalie, "This must be your new girlfriend." The two then turned they're attention towards me.
My cheeks heated up, "Oh! No! No!" The two of us stammered with our words.
"I'm just his photographer," Then walking towards Nathalie, "I'm Sydney, um I'm sorry for not looking my best, but Sid dragged me here right when I got out of work." I then gestured to my clothes before scowling playfully at Sid.
"Syd, actually, has an internship with the team so she doubles as my photographer and an employee at Barnes and Noble."
"Really?" Nathalie smiled out of fascination, "Which one?"
"Oh, the one in Cranberry, by the practice arena."
"Really?! I love that one, next time I go I'll have to remember that so I can say hi."
"Nathalie! Honey! Is Sid here?" I heard Mario's voice call out from another part of the house, making me snap my head towards the sound.
"Yeah, Hon! In here!"
I heard a sound which sounded like collars, then Mario stepped into the kitchen and two dogs waddled in.
One was a white Great Dane with a pink and black speckled nose with a few black patches on its body and a black Border Collie. When those dogs locked they're sight on me, they rushed over and attacked me, barking happily at a new stranger.
"Awe! You cuties! Hi!" The Great Dane jumped up, putting his paws in my hands, causing me to get knocked down by its weight.
"Oh, Rocks!" Mario groaned.
The two dogs then started giving me kisses while I was laying on the floor, "Hi to you too!"
"Rocks, Bo! Give the nice lady some space!" Mario laughed, gently pulling the two dogs off me and Sid holding out his two hands, helping me up. "I'm sorry about that, I guess Rocks and Bo seem to really like you."
"No no it's ok, I love dogs anyway," I bent down near the dogs, "Besides they're cuties so I don't mind at all." Rocks wagged his tail while I scratched behind his ear and Bo put his paws on my knees while I pet the two of them.
"They're not usually like this, they hate strangers." Nathalie walked over to her husband and planted an affectionate kiss on his lips.
Standing up straight again, I properly decided to greet Mario, "I'm honored to meet you Mr. Lemieux, your like an icon to me, a legend even."
"Oh please! No need for the formalities, you're making me feel old!" The two of us shook hands. "It's nice to know that Sidney finally decided to get his head straight and dump Ka-"
Nathalie gave her husband a serious look, signaling him to stop talking, "We're not dating." I chuckled.
"My name is also Sydney, but with a Y."
"Well, she loves hockey, dogs, and she's beautiful, I'd say she's a keeper, Sid." Mario teased.
"Mario!" Nathalie scolded her husband.
I giggled a bit while my cheeks heated up, I saw Sid sneak a quick glance at me, "Thank you, I mean I'm not completely beautiful but that's an argument for later."
"We'll be back." Sid and Mario walked out of the kitchen, leaving Nathalie and me alone. The two dogs also trotted away with they're owner.
"Would you like some wine, dear?"
"Oh, yes please, thank you." Nodding my head, Nathalie walked behind the bar top counter while took an open seat, waiting for Nathalie to serve me some wine.
"Did Sid not break up with that girl?" Nathalie uncorked the bottle.
"Kathy." Saying her name made my face drop.
"Yes," She paused, "Kathy." She said in disgust.
"No, not that I think," She then came over with my glass full, handing it to me, "Thank you," I mumbled, then taking a coaster, placing the glass on top.
Nathalie sat down next to me and crossed her legs, "Well, if you can tell by my voice, I'm not too fond of her at all." She lightly spun the wine in her glass around a bit, then taking a sip.
"I noticed." I then also took a sip of my wine.
"She is not really all that right for him. She's so pushy and high maintenance. It's like she has a stick up her ass."
"Very two-faced." I rolled my eyes and my brows.
"Very," She also rolled her eyes while we sipped our wine, "But you. You're different. You two looked so perfect for each other," She emphasized. "No wonder why I thought you two were a couple."
I just sat there, thinking, and listening to Nathalie praise me and Sid, even though we weren't a couple, just coworkers, maybe even friends.
"So how did you two meet?"
"I uh well ran into him," Nathalie sipped her wine while giving me a confused face. "Oh um, I was going one way with all my binders and papers and he was leaving and ya know."
"That sounds so cute. I wish I was there to have seen it."
"How did you and Mario meet?" I was truly curious about how the king and queen of Pittsburgh met.
Natalie smiled, looking down at her wine, "Oh, that's a long story."
"I love stories and I got time." Adjusting myself in my chair, I was ready to listen to her story.
"Come with me," She waved her hand as the two of us rose out of our chairs in unison, she leads me to the living room which was nearby. "Please sit."
I sat down on one of the brown sofas while Natalie went to a nearby bookshelf to pull out a giant book, a photo album probably.
She then sat down next to me, stroking the cover, "It seems like only yesterday that I met Mario in Mont Tremblant, skiing," She then opened the photo album to the front page, seeing they're wedding photo. "Both of our families came up to the resort for Thanksgiving break. I went to skiing camps, making new friends while he went to hockey camps, playing on the pond with other kids, making new friends. I was on my way back to the resort with my girlfriends and we happened to lock eyes with each other than WAP!" She clapped her hands together, "Lights out for me. When I woke up, Mario was watching over me, trying to wake me up with a bunch of other kids around me. He helped me back to the resort and we had cocoa together by a giant fireplace outside and that's when he kissed me."
"He kissed you?! He just met you!" I gasped out of shock and fascination.
"Yes, he did, he told me that he felt something inside. He said that there weren't any butterflies in his gut, he said when he looked at me that the world stopped and he thought I was the most beautiful woman in the entire world."
"True Love at First Sight," I mumbled while nodding my head.
"That's right, True Love at First Sight and we started dating and then he finally proposed, had Stephanie, and we got this beautiful house, Lauren, and Alexa, and Austin then came along. When they moved out, we met Sid and Flower, the two spent a few years upstairs,"
"Really?! Sid and Flower lived in your attic?" I giggled.
"Oh Lord no! They have they're own rooms upstairs! Do you wanna see?"
I sipped my wine, almost spitting it out, "Uh, is that even a question?!"
"Well come on!" She smiled, we got up and Nathalie put the album back where it belonged on the shelf before showing me upstairs to Sid's room.
Nathalie slowly opened a door to a whole new side of Sidney Crosby. Light sky blue painted walls, neat and organized, black bedding, and a Montreal poster hanging above his bed.
"Sid insisted that he paint the room a sky blue."
Stepping into the room, I saw his closet and a desk by a window with a white desk chair, "It's a beautiful color."
"Naturally," She sighed happily, "It is his favorite color."
I turned to face Nathalie, "Really?"
"Yup."
I walked further into the room, sitting on the twin-sized bed, touching the sheets and inhaling his scent while I looked over to his hockey puck lamp and saw pictures of Kathy and him when they were younger and his parents, Troy and Trina, his sister Taylor, and the family dog, Sam.
"This is the side people rarely get to see. I don't think Kathy ever saw this room, he's very-"
"Secretive." I finished for Nathalie.
Then I decided to get a bit comfy, slipping off my work shoes, laying down on his bed, staring at the ceiling with my hands on my lower stomach, taking deep breaths. I slowly turned over on the bed and cuddled up, clutching the sheets and inhaling his scent.
"Someone's getting comfy."
Shooting up, I saw Sid and Mario standing by the closet, the three staring at me, "I uh, was just admiring your room." Stumbling to get my shoes back on my feet, I got off his bed and smoothed out the sheets.
"Well, this was another part of his life." Mario looked around his room.
"It definitely was," Sid also looked around the room, "I think it's time to go." Sid held up the cardboard box in between his arm, signaling our time to leave.
"Already?" I whined slightly.
"Yes, and you're still driving," Sid smirked darkly before throwing me the keys again.
I caught them with my one hand, scrunching my face. Nathalie and Mario both walked us downstairs and outside to our car.
I unlocked the car from the front door for Sid so he could talk with Mario while putting his package in the back and me and Nathalie talking together.
The pair of us standing a distance away from each other, talking. Sid stripped his windbreaker and put it in the front passenger seat while talking to Mario.
"You give him some trouble and keep him on his toes." She whispered in his ear before we kissed each other's cheeks, on each side.
Looking over to Sid, I pulled out my phone, snapping a quick photo, "Don't worry, I will." I replied back. Nathalie winked at me.
Mario came and returned the gesture, "Keep an eye on him."
The corners of my lips curled, "I will."
After saying our goodbyes, the two of us got in the car and I drove away with the two waving to us as we left.
