|Model or Intern?|
A loud beeping went off in my room, snapping me from my dream as my eyelids started to open. My alarm clock on my windowsill was going off. Then Bri burst through the door, her hair all matted and frizzy, she was wearing a black sports bra and black shorts as her pajamas with a big smile painting her face.
"Wake up! Wake up! It's gonna be a great day!" She went over to my window parting the curtains, letting the sunshine through, making a groan escape my mouth as I picked myself up from the bed. "I already got our breakfast ready so we can eat while we're on the way or eat later at work." Bri then went over to my lights, turning them all off before leaving my room, shutting the door behind me.
I could hear the birds chirping outside my window because the room was silent. Smiling, scratching my head, yawning, and swinging my feet over the edge of my bed, my feet hit the rug that was at the foot of my bed. I then helped myself get off my bed and walk to the bathroom that was in between my room and Bri's. She was just about to start brushing her teeth when I got not the bathroom. Going behind her, I went over to where my toothbrush was on the wall.
Our brushes were in a special container that had our own designated hands free toothpaste dispenser and holsters. Then I pushed the little handle inside the dispenser with my brush head as it put some paste on the bristles before standing behind her, brushing my teeth.
Since I was the tallest, I stood in the back so she could have the front because she was shorter than me. Bri looked at my face in the mirror and started to dance like an idiot which made me laugh and also join in her dancing to hype up our morning. After the two of us brushed, washed our brushes, we parted ways, going into our own rooms to get dressed.
I stripped off my PJs before pulling out a pair of black spandex, putting those on before slipping my black skirt on with my white long sleeve V neck shirt, tucking it into the skirt. Then I went over to grab my boots, sit on my bed while putting them on.
Once I got all my clothes on, I took my hairbrush and combing through the nest that was in my hair. The ends of my hair sprung up slightly while combing through them.
I also paired my outfit with my Fossil glasses with were circular with slight cat eyes, the top portion of the frames were dark brown while the other lower half was rose gold, some small dangly Chanel hoop earrings, and my stud necklace that Beth got me for Christmas in our sophomore year.
My makeup was light, covering all my blemishes and imperfections, a light smokey eye, and watermelon flavored lip gloss. I didn't want to go too hard with the mascara because if I did, my eyelashes would look fake since they are naturally thick and long.
Grabbing a few essentials to put in my black Michael Kors purse, which includes, pen, pencil, highlighter, phone, battery pack plus charger, some money, and my earbuds, which I neatly arranged inside before stepping out of the room to feed Juno before I left.
Juno was sleeping on one of the chairs in the living room when I walked in, going over to his bag of food. The crinkling of the bag must have made him excited because I heard a thud and his nails scratching the wood floor as he ran over to his food bowl. He politely sat down in front of his bowl as he watched my put some food in for him. Right when I closed the bag, he started digging in. Then I took a glass from the cupboard, filled it with water, before pouring it into his dish.
"There ya go buddy boo," Smiling down at my eating dog, I stroked his light coat before walking over to the sink, putting the glass inside. "Just don't eat it all in one sitting."
"K! Ready to go?!" Bri said from down the hallway, in her bedroom. She came walking into the kitchen, fixing her one earring. Bri was wearing ripped mom jeans, black belt, white Vans, a Guns, and Roses tee, with her hair half up and hoop earrings.
"You look so much better than me." I slightly laughed, looking down at my clown attire.
"Oh shut the fuck up." She teased, batting her hand at me before picking up a camera bag from the island and a small rolling suitcase, assuming her things for work.
"Are we taking my car or-?"
Bri cut me off, "We're taking my car, might as well take one instead of driving separately," She then took her badge that hung from a Penguins lanyard out from one of her camera case pockets, shoving it in her front pocket so the lanyard was hanging out, then she put the camera bag strap around her shoulder. "Oh! We also have to make a stop before going to work."
Nodding my head, "Bye Juno! Be good!" I grabbed her keys from her hook on the fridge, opening up the door for her and locking it behind. The two of us went downstairs and Bri took me to a coffee shop that was right under our apartment.
The Muddy Cup Coffee House. I could smell cookies coming from all the way outside the building. Inside there were a few people up at the counter with a middle-aged lady over at the pastries counter. The door chimed a bell when opening, making the lady perk her head up.
"Morning Bri!" The lady beamed as she bent down, putting more Boston Creme doughnuts inside the case.
"Morning Dotty!" Bri walked over to the counter, bypassing the line with me trailing behind her suitcase.
"I have your usual!" She then closed the case, turning to the counter behind her, grabbing two to-go cups. When she turned around, her face lit up again, "You must be Sydney! Bri told me yesterday that you'd be coming to live and work with her!"
"Yup, cross my fingers." Smiling nervously, I crossed both fingers on my hands, in the air in front of me.
"A Carmel mocha swirl iced coffee and a French vanilla decaf iced coffee." She smiled, holding up the two cups with the straws already in the cups over the counter.
Taking the cup from the nice lady, "Did you tell her already?" I turned, smiling ya Bri.
"Maybe." She said quietly, sipping her coffee.
Taking a sip of my own, I was completely blown away, "Ok this is so much better than McDonald's iced coffee!" The two laughed at my comment.
"Glad your enjoying it, oh, and take a scone too!" Dotty took two scones out from the case, putting them in two small separate bags.
"Oh, Dotty no! You already give us free coffee-" Bri shook her hand.
"Oh please! It's a beautiful day and it's Sydney's first day on the job!" She smiled, holding out the bags.
A loud sigh of defeat came from Bri, "Thank you, Dot."
"Your welcome."
"I'm still giving you a tip tho!" Bri turned to the tip jar in front of the open cash register, dumping some change from her pocket into the jar.
"Brianna! You don't need to tip me!"
"Well, I did it anyway!" Bri held up her drink in her one hand while walking away.
"Have a great day you two!" She waved us off.
"Thank you! Bye Dotty!" The two of us said in unison before leaving and going to Bri's car nearby.
I unlocked the car, getting into the passenger seat while Bri went around the back of the car with her suitcase, opening the backseat door, putting her bags in the back, then hopping the in driver's seat. The two of us exchanged things, she gave me her drink and scones while I gave her the keys. I put our drinks in the designated cup holders while I held on to the scones.
Bri started the car, looked in front and behind her before pulling out of her spot in front of my car, "Ok, so since we're not in a big hurry and were running early, I'll take the scenic route along the river." She smiled before picking up her coffee, taking a sip before setting it down.
"Ooo, fun, fun." I rapidly clapped my hands together before turning on the radio.
When I turned on the radio, Bri automatically groaned at the song playing, "Turn that racket down." She groaned out. The song that was playing was Do It Again by Pia Mia or something like that so I changed the radio to a different station. Sweater Weather by The Neighborhood was on.
We were just turning a corner near a small grocery store in Bellevue, going down the road.
Shrugging, "Ok so you said scenic, where's the river then?" I looked around, looking out all the windows in the car.
"Well," Bri started, crouching down slightly. "The Ohio River is somewhere out over there," She pointed in front of us circling her finger. "It's gonna be a few minutes before you'll be able to see it."
"Huh," I then faced forward. "Alrighty then," Looking down at one of the scone bags, I opened it up and broke off a piece, popping it in my mouth while humming along with the chorus of the song. Looking out the windshield, I noticed we were driving past a hospital, like a school hospital. "Well, that's good to know."
"Hm?" Bri raised her brows, glancing at me quickly before looking at the road.
"Oh, we're right by a hospital so that's a good thing to know if one of us does a stupid thing." The two of us laughed.
"Exactly!" She wiped the happy tears from her eyes before reaching down and getting her coffee, taking a sip.
Bri was right when she said it was gonna take a few minutes to see the river. The song had ended and another song started. My head snapped to look at Bri when I heard the song. HandsClap was another good hype song to get me excited for the day. The sax solo just started playing.
"Oh my Lord, turn it up!" Bri smiled as I turned up the radio.
"Somebody save your soul cause you've been sinning this city! I know too many troubles, all these lovers got you losing control! You're like a drug to me, a luxury, my sugar, and gold!" I started singing along to the song at the same tempo.
"How and the hell do you know the lyrics?!" Bri laughed, snapping her head from the road to me.
"I listened to this song on an hour loop."
"An hour?! Your literally insane! I couldn't do that with any song!" Bri laughed, taking another sip of her iced coffee.
"Hey! It's a good song!" I teased, taking a sip of my coffee before taking a bite of my scone.
"Hey! Hey! Look!" Bri lightly slapped my arm, she pointed out my window. "There's the river!" We just started coming out of the woods and drove alongside above the water.
"Oh wow!" I gasped. "It's amazing!" I stared out the window at the river below us while violently sipping my coffee. Not too far in front of us a way, there was a bridge crossing the river. As my eyes followed up the river, I saw skyscrapers in the distance. "Hey! Look! I can see Pittsburgh from here!" I pointed out the front of the windshield to Bri.
"Oh yeah! I've taken this way before but I've never noticed that!" Bri smiled. "That's truly amazing!"
We then started approaching the bridge I saw earlier, "What bridge is this?" I asked Bri, moving my head from her to the window, looking and pointing out the window.
"Oh! That one?" She thought for a minute. "That's the McKees Rocks Bridge." She nodded her head, turning her head back to the road, continuing to sing our song together.
The ride was absolutely amazing, we went over the river, under overpasses, and through a dark tunnel. When we came out the other side we were actually in the city. Bri turned the corner down a small street before the arena poked around the corner. The sun sparkled on the windows as it started to rise.
"We'll go through the statue entrance. It will be 1000% better." Bri smiled and drove past the arena, then driving past an old church, then going into a large parking lot, stopping at the toll gate, rolling the window down.
A big colored man stepped out of the booth, smiling, "Hey Bri!"
"Hey, Jim! How are ya today?" The two of us looked out the window at the colored man who smiled back.
"I'm doing well thanks for asking, who's your friend?" He gestured to me in the passenger seat.
"I'm Sydney!" Reaching over Bri, the two of us shook hands.
"Oh, nice grip," He mumbled, looking at my hand shaking his. "I'm Jim, I work security and sometimes parking booths."
"Your looking at one of our new interns, Jim," Bri smirked, raising her brow as she turned to me.
"Really?!" He gave off a large toothy grin.
"Yus sir." Smiling, I gave him a curt nod of my head.
"Wow," He paused. "Ya know, last year we had more interns."
"Oh yeah," Bri pointed a finger at Jim, nodding her head. "Didn't we have like 15 interns?"
"Yeah, I think somewhere around there."
Bri then turned to me, "Last year we had maybe 15 interns and all but three passes the test given to them at the end of the season last year, those three never came back this year to start the new season in their new positions."
I was shocked at this news, "Wow, that's disappointing."
"Truly," Jim added.
"I definitely know if I pass this so-called test you told me about, I'll definitely be staying." My eyes shifted from Bri to Jim.
"Anyway, I don't want to keep you two ladies from your busy day!" Jim lightly slapped his hands on the door.
"Thank you, Jim."
"It was nice to meet you, Miss Sydney." Jim smiled and tipped the brim of his hat.
"Same to you Jim!" I waved from the passenger seat.
Jim kindly let us pass through the gates as we drove through the parking lot.
"These are just some of the few staff parking spots." Bri pulled her car into a staff designated parking spot, closest to the building.
Bri parked and turned off the car, grabbing her camera and suitcase. When I stepped out, I fixed my skirt and took a deep inhale.
"Hello, beautiful Pittsburgh!" I screamed to the air, cupping my mouth. The echoes of my voice could be heard coming off nearby buildings.
Bri chuckled at my action before closing the door. I then turned back and grabbed the scones and coffees.
Bri, with all of her belongings, came to my side of the car to grab her scone and coffee, "Thank you, ma'am."
"Your welcome." Smiling we walked side by side towards the arena, crossing the side walk over.
My eyes got wide as the statue of Mario Lemieux go bigger as I approached. I was standing at the foot of a legend.
"Wow." My eyes went wide as I stared up at the statue as the sun started hitting it.
"My same reaction when I first saw it too, at Winter Fest."
"I just can't believe I'm here. Standing right here. Right here! History was made here!" I snapped myself around, making my hair fly, looking at Bri.
"Very true, very true," Bri nodded, standing next to me as we stared up at the statue. "You wanna picture?"
"Why not! I mean we're here!" Throwing my hands in the air, I unzipped my purse and pulled out my phone.
Bri backed up a bit setting down her iced coffee next to her. I then went to the statue, setting my coffee and scone bag down on the ledge before she met me in the middle to take my phone. Walking back over to the ledge, I swung my legs up, slightly pressing them to my chest while I painted my face with my shark-like grin and my hands over my knees.
"Ok say," Her voice died down behind my phone. "Um," She thought. "Go Penguins!" She smiled.
"Go Penguins!" I smiled widely. Bri then came up to me and took a shot more towards the ground. Then I stood up, popping my one leg in the air with my arms raised above me. "Go Penguins!" I laughed.
Bri smiled, giving me back my phone so I could look at the pictures she took. She picked up all her belongings, walked over to me, and looked over my shoulder at the pictures she took.
"These are so amazing, I dunno how I can compete," I laughed slightly as we stared at each other. "Hey! How about a selfie?!"
"Oh my God! Yes!"
Holding my arm out to fit both of us in the picture, the timer started counting down, "Say Pens!"
"Pens!" The two is us smiled in unison.
We admired our picture before grabbing our belongings and walking inside the main entrance. My eyes shifted so quickly from one thing to the next which also included the Mario Lemieux mosaic, I took a picture to save for later and admire.
Bri used her badge on her lanyard to get through a staff entrance door. We were in a hallway walking one way when a familiar face was also walking towards us. Oval face, very defined eyebrows, and icy blue eyes, much taller than the two of us girls.
"Tristan! My guy!" Bri smiled, waving to the guy named Tristan walked towards us smiling widely. His smile seemed all too familiar to me.
His black Adidas slides on his feet covered by his white tube socks slapped against his heels, "Hey Bri! What's up?" When the two got close enough they did a fist bump and lightly hit the tops of their hands before making finger scissors, pointing at each other while their hands were touching.
"Nothin' much, 'nother day in paradise!" She smiled, then my mind realized who this guy was. Tristan Jarry, the goalie. My face dropped as I discreetly pointed at him as we parted ways.
I started walking backward, still pointing with my face dropped, "That was Tristan Jarry!" I whispered loudly.
"Yes, it was," Bri smirked at me, continuing to walk down the hallway with me at her side.
I then cupped and squished my cheeks together, "I probably looked like a goldfish in front of him!"
Bri scoffed, "Nahh! You look amazing!"
I put my hands over my face while still walking next to Bri. I probably did look like a fish.
We turned a few corners before going down a bigger hallway. I heard skates scratching the ice and clicking and slapping of pucks. We were in the tunnel under the stands. When we stepped into the light, my eyes squinted from the brightness under my glasses so I stopped in my tracks, letting my eyes adjust to the lights.
When they finally got somewhat adjusted, my mouth dropped as my head was on a swivel. Bri had to tug on my sleeve to snap me out of my starstruck moment. She brought me closer to the glass where the guys were out practicing with Mike Sullivan standing in the benches, coaching, hence his title Coach Sullivan.
"Is that Sullivan?" I discreetly pointed to Sullivan in the benches, alone.
"Yup, still surprised that the Assistant Coach positions aren't filled up."
"Same here." I then scanned the ice looking for my favorite players. Some weren't around anymore because they were drafted to other teams.
"Oh my God! It's Geno!" I half squeaked, pointing to Geno facing off in the center against Adam Johnson with Jake on his left and Rust on his right. "He's better than on TV." I slightly laughed.
"All of them are better in person." Bri elbowed me.
"I see your man Bri." I elbowed her a few times, gesturing to Jake on the ice.
"Stop it." She groaned, looking at the floor before taking a sip of her iced coffee.
As I watched the scrimmage play out, Jake glanced over at us before snapping his head back up, giving off a cheeky smile, wagging his fingers at us through his bulky gloves before going back to the scrimmage.
I then crossed my arms over my chest, "Is practice like this every day?"
"No, no, not really," Bri and I gave each other quick little glances. "Normally it's either an on ice workout or in the exercise room workout," She paused. "8 out of the 10 times it's on ice workout and the rest is either scrimmage or exercise room workout."
"Oh, I see," After a few minutes, I glanced at my watch on my wrist. My interview was at 9. "Hey ho! My interview is soon, gotta get going!" I then adjusted my shirt, making sure it was tucked in.
"You go knock-'em, dead girl!" We then gave each other a high five before Bri went to go sit in a nearby seat. "I'll be here in my office." She gestured to her surroundings and her suitcase, raising her iced coffee in the air before taking a sip and getting her scone out.
Throwing a finger at Bri, "Don't drink my coffee and eat my scone while I'm away." I teased her.
"Oh yeah, I sure will." She emphasized, unzipping her suitcase and pulling out her huge MacBook.
I then started walking back into the tunnel only realizing I didn't know where I was going, so I turned around, coming back, embarrassed with my one hand over my face, "Ok, so, I just realized that I have no clue where I am going-"
Bri laughed, "You'll wanna go around, following the glass, then take those stairs to the top and you'll find the offices are in that hallway." She pointed up towards the top of the stands, under the VIP seats.
"Thanks." Nodding my head out of embarrassment, my one hand still on my face, I walked in the directions Bri told me to take. While walking around the ice behind the glass, I took my hand from my face, letting out a loud huff before holding my head high so I could look and feel confident.
3rd POV...
Evgeni Malkin skated over to the benches, switching positions with one of his teammates. Tristan Jarry also behind him switching his spot.
"Who's she?" Tristan gestured to Sydney walking with her head held high in the air behind the glass.
"I dunno but she's probably the intern," Jake shrugged. "But I did see her with Bri though."
"Look at her!" Geno threw his hand out, gesturing to Sydney. "She's not the intern!" His Russian accent thickened his words, "She's probably a model just look at her long strides and the way she walks." The group stood in silence, watching Sydney walk over to the stairs and start to climb them, holding on to the railing,
"Damn," Geno mumbled from under his breath before grinning like an idiot, turning to his teammates. "I really think she is a model."
