CHAPTER SIXTY TWO , WE CAN BE FRIENDS

a/n : The EmiBuck banter is BAAACK!!!

I'm gonna combine the first 2 episodes of season 4 cus the chapter was a lot shorter than I realized without combing them

━━━━━━━━━━

Emerson Sharpe was completely alone.

At first, it took Emery some getting her to. Having a house swallowed in silence was something she hasn't experienced since after Helena died. She's always had someone in her house. First it was Amaya, then it was William, then Amaya again, then her father. And for a couple months it was Dylan, until the lockdown happened.

When the lockdown was announced, Dylan's grandparents thought it was better if he stayed with them. Emery wasn't going to argue. She didn't want to make anyone's life harder than it had to, but she did ask for Dylan's input and he was reluctant (very reluctant) to admit that being near his grandparents was the best choice. Especially after Tom dying, he didn't want it to seem like he vanished out of their lives forever. He couldn't do that to them.

Now normally, Emery would be miserable if she were living alone. The house was still filled with a heavy silence. But it was different. Emery was able to breathe by herself. She was able to figure out what she wanted in life and who she wanted in life. But that silence had to take a toll on her someday, right?

For months, her father's words of encouraging about going after what and who she wanted rang through her head. And she was ready to go after him. But, now, with the way the world is; Emery saw it as hopeless.

Besides, she likes how things are with Buck. She wasn't mad that they were friends.

They could be friends.

"Okay, okay—hold on." Emery holds her hand out to Chimney, who freezes in place with his hands also out. "You. Are still living with him?" She points at Buck her pointer finger brushes his nose .

Buck pulls his nose back and rubs it. "I have a name."

Emery waves a dismissive hand, "Yeah, yeah, sure you do."

"Okay, 1," Emery holds up her finger. "why would you put yourself through that?"

"Oh, hahaha." Buck goes to mush her face but she steps away from him with a laugh.

"Don't touch me!" Emery whacks his hand and clears her throat. "All right—and 2, why would you put Maddie through that?"

"What are you talking about?—Wait. Is this a bash at my brother?" Chimney crosses his arms and raises his brows.

Eddie nods his head, "It totally is."

Emery hums and looks to the side. "Nooo—"

"She's lying." Buck points at the woman, his finger flicking her nose. Emery groans, "Dammit—7 feet!" She crosses her arms.

Buck rolls his eyes, "We all bunk together and get multiple tests done."

"Not as much as I would like..." Emery softly mumbles.

"Yeah, we should be fine, Em." Chimney shrugs.

Simultaneously, Buck and Emery look at Chimney. He notices their hard glares and blinks, "What?"

"We should be fine?" Emery repeats.

"You haven't even moved back in with Maddie. You don't get a say in this." Buck adds.

"Hey! That's not the same thing." Chimney says.

Eddie hums, "It's kind of the same thing."

"No, you three are referring to home." Chimney says. "This isn't home."

"It's home away from home." Emery replies. "Speaking of which. Here's your shirt back." She rummages through her bag and hands the plastic sealed t-shirt to Buck.

Chimney and Eddie exchange a look.

"I thought I lost this!" Buck grabs the shirt.

"You lose things often?" Emery smirks.

Buck goes to open the plastic, but he couldn't get a good grip on it. "Why did you vacuum seal it?"

"Because I deep washed it." Emery clicks her tongue and shoots a finger gun at him. "You're welcome."

"Okay—"

"Hold on..."

Emery and Buck look at Chimney and Eddie. They both had the same thought, but didn't want to accuse any one of anything.

"You let her borrow your shirt?" Eddie pulls his brows together.

Buck frowns, "Yeah, she spilled wine on her blouse at dinner last week."

"Which I didn't want to do by the way!" Emery holds a hand up. "But, he told me to get out of the house."

"Which you needed." Buck replies, looking at her.

Emery keeps her eyes on his, "Mmm debatable."

"You guys went to dinner?" Chimney smiles.

Emery looks at Eddie then Chimney. A small snort escapes from, "Guys, what is wrong with you?" She wrinkles her nose. "All you're doing is repeating everything we've said."

"Well, yeah. 'Cause the two of you are acting like a co—"

The station begins to shake more than before. Emery tilts her head up at the ceiling and frowns.

"What was that? A four?" Hen walks over to the group.

Eddie shifts his eyes between Emery and Buck. "Felt like a dud." He looks at Hen. "I wouldn't put it at any more than a three."

Buck pulls his phone out and Emery points. "Cheater!"

Chimney snaps his fingers and points at Buck as well. "Hey, no cheating!"

"Caltech's been tracking micro-quakes the last few days."

Emery's ears perk and she leans over Buck's shoulder. "Seriously?" Her eyes look at the screen and her brows raise. "Holy shit—there's been thousands of them."

"I know. It's insane." Buck turns and looks at the side of Emery's face. She turns and meets his gaze. Emery's breathing hitches and she quickly looks away from him.

"That didn't feel micro to me." Bobby walks over to the group.

"Yeah, nobody likes a know it all, Eddie." Emery snaps her eyes over to the man.

Eddie rolls his eyes, "Yeah, you're one to talk."

The bell rings throughout the station, catching everyone's attention. "Time to go."

Emery bumps Buck's to the side and runs toward the fire the groip. "Oh, it's on!" Buck runs after her.

Eddie and Chimney look at each other. "Do you think Emery—"

"—is the mystery girl Buck's been talking to?" Chimney finishes. "I've been wondering that for months and I think this confirms it."

"You guys are idiots."

Eddie and Chimney jump from the voice. They look at Hen, who was standing between them. How long was he there for?

"Hen, what the hell?" Eddie exhales.

"I thought you were gonna stop doing that!"

Hen smiles with pride, "You said you wanted me to stop doing it. I never said that I would."

"That does not go there."

Emery hums with her eyes still on the bus that was stuck in the side of the building. "I usually see them a bit..." she slightly pushes her hand towards the floor. "...lower to the ground."

"All right, team, let's get up there." Bobby was the first to walk towards the building then the rest of the team follows.

"So, can I ask more about this mystery woman?" Chimney points at Buck, his eyes were glued to his phone.

"Uh, yeah—sure."

"Mystery woman?" Emery hums. "You found someone in the middle of a pandemic? How do you do that?"

"Skype." Buck looks away from her.

Emery quirks a brow, "Is that right?"

Chimney and Eddie look between the two firefighters, reading their expressions. Emery seemed tense, like she was disappointed by the information. While Buck seemed nervous—reluctant to give the information out. Maybe they weren't together. Or maybe they were just really good actors.

The team gets in the elevator and move to the top level. The elevator was silent except for the calming elevator music.

"Ooh hey. The Hollywood reservoir has 2 1/2 billion gallons." Buck reads off his phone. "Where's all that water gonna go?"

Emery's skin crawls just thinking about all that water. Sure she could take showers and baths. But having her head submerged under water or even being near a beach still made her skin crawl.

"My mom survived the dam break in the '60s." Hen says. "Baldwin Hills. Water only even wants to go in one direction—out to sea."

The elevator dings. Bobby, Chimney, and Hen put their masks back on. The doors open revealing the front of the bus that was rammed in the side of the building.

"This is definitely our stop." Chimney says as he gets off the elevator with the other two.

A shudder escapes Emery's lips. "You know I have to say..." she looks at Eddie then Buck as the elevator door's close. "...this is still much better than a tsunami."

The three firefighters get to the top level of the building. They had to get off the elevator and make their way to the roof of the building on their own.

"You gonna be okay to go up there?" Emery asks. "All by your lonesome?"

Buck lets out a stifled chuckle. "I've done it before." He tilts his head. "What, you worried?"

Emery's mouth drops open. "Well, yeah."

Buck's face drops out of shock. He expected her to make a snarky comment. It was nice to—

"I'm worried you won't get the job done by your lonesome."

Eddie looks to the side and laughs. Buck's shocked expression drops. Emery points at Buck and laughs, "You fell for it!"

"No, I didn't." Buck's face gets hot. He looks at Eddie for support, but he was too busy laughing.

Eddie looks back at Buck and notices his glare. Eddie's smile drops and he coughs. "Uh, sorry." He clears his throat. "But your face looked like you fell for it."

Emery hums and looks at Buck with a smug smile. Buck looks between Emery and Eddie as they wait for his response. Buck opens and closes his mouth. "You know what? Whatever, can you finish securing the bus please?"

Emery snorts, "Yes, sir." She sends him a two finger salute. Emery and Eddie continue to secure the bus. Once they were done Buck, secured his line before standing on the edge of the roof top.

"This is Diaz. Be advised Buck's about to touch down." Eddie speaks into his radio. "Once he's there we'll send down the webbing to secure the bus."

Buck begins to scale down the building towards the bus. Emery and Eddie keep their positions while slightly leaning over the building to watch Buck.

"So..."

Emery keeps her eyes on Buck. "So..."

"You and Buck..."

"Me and Buck..." she hums.

Buck makes it on the bus and Emery lets out a breath. She registers what Eddie said and freezes. Emery pulls her brows together. "Me and Buck?" She looks at Eddie, who has a brow raised.

Emery reads his expression and her eyes widen. "Are you insane?!"

Eddie couldn't wipe the smile of amusement off his face. "Why so defensive?"

Emery opens and closes her mouth. Her face was hot and her breathing was heavy. "What are you—I'm not defensive." She lightly shoves him. "I'm just...trying to focus." She points at Buck on top of the bus.

"Interesting that you point down to Buck." Eddie hums.

"I was pointing at the bus!" Emery seethes. She lets out a scoff. "Me and Buck—Buck and I—we are friends."

"Just friends?" Eddie raises his brows.

Emery's chest tightens and she exhales a sharp breath. "Yes. Just friends."

Their radios click, which causes Emery to jump. "Landed. Not too bad." Buck speaks over the radio. "Should be able to get this thing stable."

Emery's heart jumps from the voice over the radio. She glances at Eddie, "Let's just send down the reigns."

After the bus rescue, the 118 had no rest before their next call.

"All of the water from the dam caused more damage than just flooding the mudslides."

Hen and Emery were standing beside Bobby as they listened to the Fire Battalion explain the situation.

"It quickly eroded the bottom of the hill, and then—"

"Brought the whole hill down." Bobby finishes.

She nods her head. "Most of the damage is concentrated east of the dam. Exposed gas lines, unstable structures, and mud. Lots of it."

"Any causalities?"

"Two tagged so far, but there's bound to be more." The Battalion answers. "LAPD was evacuating resistente when the hill came down."

"Might not have gotten them all out in time."

Emery tenses and she shifts her gaze to Bobby. Even with his mask over his face, his shaken expression could be seen. Bobby glances at Emery and Hen.

"Have any officers checked in with Mobile command?" Bobby asks.

"Not that I've seen but it's still golden hour." The woman states.

"It's our best chance to find survivors. After that—"

"It becomes a recovery operation."

The rest of the team soon joins. "Should we be worried about more of that hill coming down?" Eddie asks.

"Yeah, we work quick, we work safe, we hope for the best." Bobby turns back to the Battalion. "Where do you want us?"

"The Hollywood sign."

The 118 turns to the sign and Emery tilts her head.

"I might be going crazy, but..." Emery points at the sign. "...there's something different about it."

"Where's the rest of it?"

"Downhill." The Battalion Chief answers. "About where the H landed just west of here. There were some hikers in the area."

"Guess they should have bought a vowel."

Emery lets out a stifled laugh and nudges Chimney's arm. "Good one."

Chimney smiles at Emery's approval. When it came to dad jokes, Emery was always the one who appreciated them.

"Okay, Hen, Eddie, you're with me at the sign." Bobby says. "Chimney, Buck, Em. You stay here and help search for survivors."

Chimney's head hangs low.

"That's punishment for bad jokes." Hen says.

Chimney holds up a finger. "Not bad jokes. Dad jokes."

Emery smiles, "Let her know, Chim."

"Getting in the habit early." Chimney holds his hand up to the girl and Emery high fives him. "I know. I'm gonna be a terrible father."

"Well, I don't know about him..." she turns to Hen. Emery points her thumbs at herself as she walks away with Chimney. "But, I'm gonna be an awesome aunt."

...

While the three firefighters were tracking through the debris, they came across a baby monitor with the sound of a baby crying over it.

"So, when did our job start to become impossible?"

"Oh, come on..." Buck turns to the girl. "Our jobs has always been impossible. We just enjoy beating the odds."

Emery meets Buck's gaze and a smile ghosts her lips. She wasn't always the most optimistic person, so it was nice having someone by her side who was.

Buck wags a finger, Emery quirks a brow and braces herself. He had an idea.

"Why isn't there a find my baby monitor?"

Emery presses her lips into a small smile.

"Come again?" Chimney cranes his neck forward.

Buck points at the baby monitor. "You know, because we can't ping the transmitter baby monitor that's near the baby

"It's...an idea." Emery shrugs. "The thoughts there."

"Well, maybe I'll invent it for when I misplace my kid."

Emery rolls her eyes, "Chimne, you are the last person I'd think would misplace their child."

"You know it's gonna happen." Chimney says. "I lose my phone at least three times a week."

"A phone is much smaller than a child."

"Em's right. You're selling yourself too short."

Chimney brushes off their comments. "I'm gonna call for backup. We need more people out searching."

"Do we know which channel mobile command is on?" Chimney begins to turn the channel on his radio. Buck pulls his brows together from the static growing louder.

"Wait, go back."

Emery and Chimney turn to Buck. Chimney pulls his brows together but he turns his radio to the previous channel.

"The mudslide knocked out the power on the cell service." Buck states. "There shouldn't be any interference. So what's causing that feedback?"

Emery slightly opens her mouth.

"It's a battery-operated baby monitor." Chimney says.

"We can follow the feedback." Emery snaps her fingers.

"We can follow it to where it's loudest. And that's probably where the transmitter is." Buck adds.

"And the baby." Chimney speaks . His eyes light up. "Find my baby."

The three firefighters start to walk once again, with a solid plan.

"You know, I only heard a baby not an adult."

Buck and Emery look at Chimney.

"Before, when we heard it crying." Chimney adds.

"The parents could be unconscious or, you know—"

"Dead?"

Chimney was a lot more morbid than normal. With the way the world was, it was understandable. But he's also having a kid. There should be some excitement.

"Poor kid might be an orphan."

Emery shrugs, "Or maybe they just got separated."

"Well, you really do always go worst-case scenario, don't you?" Buck sighs.

Emery holds her radio up towards a house, but she was getting no feedback.

"Is that judgement I'm detecting?" Chimney questions.

"Uh, yes. You know, it is."

"You can't blame him, Chim." Emery sighs. "You're having a kid with his sister and you're not there with her."

"You're living on my couch." Buck adds with a scoff.

"To protect her." Chimney defends. "And your niece or nephew."

Emery lets out a soft chuckle of disbelief.

"Maybe you missed it, but the whole world's taken an unexpected turn to crazy town." Chimney reminds the two as if they didn't know.

"I'm just trying to keep them safe until—"

"Until what?" Buck questions. "Until the world goes back to normal? Well, what if it never does?"

"Then I'll be a crappy dad over videoconferencing." Chimney shrugs. "That's actually something I got experience with."

Emery's shoulder sag and she looks at Buck, who had the same exact reaction over Chimney not having any confidence in being a good father.

"Chimney, you're not giving yourself enough credit, okay? You're gonna be a great dad."

"You have zero evidence to support that theory."

"Okay, listen up." Emery turns to Chimney.

Buck's mouth forms into an 'o'. "Ooo you're in trouble." She sings.

"Do you know what I wanted more than anything when my dad died?" Emery raises her brows. "For my mom to be there, so we could mourn together."

Buck's eyes sadden.

"Things are easier to handle when you have someone by your side, Chim." Emery states, she raises the radio once again and listens to the frequency. "You're scared and so is Maddie. So, why don't you move back in with her and be scared together—holy shit!" Emery grabs onto Buck's arm. Buck and Chimney look at the girl, her radio was screeching off the charts. Emery points at the house that was stuck in the side of the dirt hill.

"So, how do we get inside?" Chimney inquires.

"Chimney."

Emery turns to Buck and so does Chimney.

"What?"

Buck looks away from the house and at his coworkers, who had their intense gazes on him. He opens his mouth, "What? No, the chimney." He points at the house again.

Emery looks at the chimney on the house and parts her lips. "Oh. Well, you didn't really make that clear."

"Yeah, I'll be sure to do that next time." Buck pats her arm before jogging up towards the house.

Emery lets out a harsh breath. "He drives me nuts."

"Eh. You love it."

"Yeah..."

Emery's face drops and she turns to Chimney, who was looking at her with a smirk. Emery points at Chimney, "Don't say anything—You heard nothing." She quickly stalks away from him.

Chimney frowns, "I definitely heard something."

"What's taking you two so long?"

"N-Nothing!—What's taking you so long?" Emery scoffs.

Buck pulls his face back, taken aback by her sudden snappiness. He then looks at Chimney for an explanation, but he just throws his hands up.

"So, who's gonna fit in the Chimney?"

Emery keeps her eyes on the chimney and she swallows the nervous lump in her throat.

"Hey, Em."

Emery looks at the two men and pulls her brows together. They both had a look of caution across their faces. "If you go in there would you be okay?"

Emery looks back at the house that was slightly buried in the dried mud. Her skin begins to crawl. She could imagine house claustrophobic it was going to feel inside of the house. Then she thought about that baby that in there. They were probably all alone.

"If you need to, you can wait out here." Buck suggests. "It's okay."

Emery looks back at them with a small smile. "Uh, I think that would be a good idea." She looks at the ground. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize." Buck says. "I'm not going in there either, I think Chimney might be the only one who can fit in there."

Chimney and Emery both squint their eyes. Buck's mouth opens, "Because he's scrawny and you're...f-filled."

Emery folds her arms. "Filled?"

"Scrawny?"

Buck's face gets hot. "Not scrawny, I mean—you're not—" he then looks at Emery. "And I mean filled like, y'know—in the right, I mean a good kind of—"

"I think you should just stop talking now." Chimney sighs and waves a hand.

Emery nods her head with an amused smirk across her lips. "Definitely stop talking."

Buck slams his mouth shut with his face not cooling down anytime.

"Okay, when you get to the bottom. We'll drop the medical bag and tools down to you."

"Copy that."

Emery ties the rope to Chimney and he climbs into the chimney. He stops and turns to them. "In the future, if anybody asks, this is how I got my name."

Emery laughs. "Chimney, I hope you know that story is my leverage to get you to do whatever I want."

"And you use it all the time." Chimney clicks his tongue.

Emery sends him a playful wink. She gives Chimney a nod and begins to lower him into the Chimney.

"You got it?"

Emery slightly turns her head and meets Buck's eyes. Her stomach flutters, "Y-Yeah, I got—"

The rope slightly slips and she stumbles forward. "Shit!"

Buck quickly grabs Emery's waist and pulls her back—his chest now pressed against her back. He uses one hand to grip the edge of the chimney, keeping his feet planted. Emery lets out a quick breath.

"Everything okay up there?"

Emery's eyes shift to Buck's hand on the chimney and she swallows. In that moment, the only thought she had was the phantom feeling of Buck's hand around her throat. Fuck. Her heart was racing uncontrollably and her breathing was heavy. Emery snaps herself from her very very dirty thoughts and grabs her walkie. "Yeah—Yeah, we're okay."

"Okay, good—good..."

"Please don't let me fall."

Emery softly chuckles, "It won't happen again, sorry, Chim." Slightly turns her head and meets Buck's entertained gaze. "Thank you."

"Don't mention it." Buck raises a brow. "Everyone needs help every now and then."

"Even you, Emi."

Emery softly huffs, "I forget that sometimes." She clears her throat and slowly lowers Chimney down.

Buck keeps a close eye on how Emery glances back at him every now and then. "You sure everything's all right?"

Emery bunches her shoulders. "Why wouldn't they be? Yeah! Everything's awesome."

"Guys, I'm in."

Emery looks down at her radio. "Copy." She ties the rope down and secures it.

Buck continues to watch as Emery stands further away from him. "Hey, is this about me helping you with the rope?"

Emery turns to him and softly hums. "What? No. I'm grateful that you helped me." She waves a hand.

"Okay, then what's going on?" Buck looks back at the Chimney. "Is it because you didn't go in?"

Emery swallows. She sure as hell wasn't going to tell Buck it was because she was imagining him choking her. " Yeah—yep." She nods. "I still have an issue with small spaces."

Buck slightly opens his mouth. "There's nothing wrong with still working on healing."

Emery lets out a small breath. "Well, that's easy for you to say, pretty boy." She softly smirks.

Buck looks down into the chimney for a moment. He hadn't told anybody about him going to therapy. But to him Emery wasn't just anybody. It was easy to talk to her.

"I'm actually seeing a therapist right now." Buck says. Emery's smile drops and her lips part. "It's online, obviously."

"Oh, god. I didn't mean to brush you off like my problems are worst." Emery holds a hand out to Buck.

"It's okay, I get what you were trying to say." Buck reassures her. "I'm just saying, you're not alone. What I've been talking about with her goes back to my childhood. All of our issues, problems—can be rooted from our past."

Emery keeps her eyes on Buck's, a small smile ghosting across her lips. "Okay, have you also been taking psychology courses and you just haven't told me; because that was amazing."

Buck looks down and bashfully laughs. "No, actually, I've been...living and learning."

"Well, it seems like I have a lot to learn from you then." Emery takes a step closer to Buck. She presses her hands against the chimney and leans on it. "You've never talked about going to therapy before. Does anyone else know?"

Buck frowns, "Nope. Not even my sister."

"And...you decided to tell me?"

Buck just simply nods. "Yeah."

"Why?"

Buck lifts his gaze and meets Emery's soft brown eyes. "Because I trust you, Emerson."

He knows how important trust was to Emery. Ever since the lawsuit, Buck has tried everything in his power to regain that trust and make it much stronger than before. Even though Emery has forgiven him, Buck still couldn't help but feel the need to make it up to her in every way possible. He wanted her to know that he trusted her and was willing to be vulnerable. Even if she wasn't.

"And with you...everything just comes easier. You make life feel..." Buck realizes how much he wanted to say to her. He wanted Emery to know that he's loved her for who knows how long. But they weren't together. They were friends. And things with them were good as friends. "...easier. That's all."

Emery bites the inside of her cheek to distract herself from the forming bundle of heat forming in her stomach. This man made her so giddy, it was ridiculous. "Well, I'm glad you trusted me enough to tell me."

The two firefighters keep their eyes on each other. Emery could feel her heart begin to race once again. Buck's face was hot and he was praying that there wasn't a change of color in his face.

"Guys, I got him." Emery and Buck pull their eyes from each other's and look down at their radios.
"Can't be anymore than a few days old. Not a scratch on him." A small smile graces Emery's lips.

"Found the mother too, deceased. Looks like blunt force trauma to the head."

"We'll notify mobile command. Tag the house." Emery says.

"Let's get you two outta there."

"Copy—"

There was an abrupt cut off of Chimney's words. Emery and Buck exchange a look, waiting for Chimney to say anything else.

"We're gonna need reinforcements down here—fast."

The night was long, but it was finally over. Everyone had gone home, but one person. Shocker.

Emery wiped down every surface in the station. Making sure it was sanitized before the B shift came in. She let out a satisfied breath and she took in her work.

"Em..."

Emery turns to her captain with her hands gloved, her hands were wrapped around a sponge, and in her other hand was a spray bottle.

"Shouldn't you be home right now?"

Emery looks at the cleaning products. "Right—yeah." She stammers. "I didn't realize the time. I'm sorry."

Bobby watches as she puts all the cleaning products away. "Is there anyone here?"

Emery frowns, "I don't think so." She chuckles. "Everyone went home."

"Everyone...had someone to go home to, I guess." Emery gives him a pained smile and continues putting the cleaning products away.

Bobby's eyes soften. "This year can't be easy for you." He walks over to her. "Especially with after your father."

"It hadn't even been a month." Emery's voice trembles. "Being alone in that house...I was going to move but, there aren't really a lot of people interest in selling right now."

"That's why you're always the last to leave." Bobby says, nodding his head.

"I just want to make sure everyone gets home safely." Emery exhales.

"Well, what about Buck?"

Emery's stomach flutters. "Chimney's moving back in with Maddie. So, Albert is going to bunk with Buck." She washes her hands. "You know what? It's okay. I'm okay." She looks at Bobby. "I'm gonna go home now, captain. Thank you for checking in on me."

"We're having this dinner for Athena." Bobby says. "To congratulate her on her first day back. You should come."

Emery chuckles, "I don't think that's a good idea." She looks to the ground. "I don't want to intrude on your guys' family—"

"You're apart of that family, Em."

Emery looks back at Bobby, her eyes wide.

"You were apart of the family before I was." Bobby gives her a gentle smile. "So, please, come to dinner."

Emery's eyes fill with tears and a small smile presses onto her lips. "O-Okay."
