Age 7

Julianne and Keith were playing at the playground during recess. They liked to play on the side of the playground that no one else like to play on. They liked to be alone with each other. They didn't have much friends because they thought if they were to make others they would break the promise. And you can't break that promise. Ever.

"Keith! Keith! Want to see what I can do?" Julianne yelled at the boy who was sitting on the grass beside the equipment. He nodded his head as she balanced on the bar.

There were 4 blue bars that was in front of the grey monkey bars on their playground. No one knew what they were for. So sometimes kids would do flips or just sit on top and balance their body as they talked to their friends.

Julianne tightened her hands around the bar she was sitting on top of. The sun was beaming above them, making the surface hot, burning her hand a bit. She took a deep breath and fell back. She did flips around the bar, holding her body close to the bar so she doesn't hit head on the next bar over.

It wasn't until she reached a hot burning spot on the bar, her grip eased a bit, making her panic and her body unravel from the bar. She was mid flip when she hit head on the next bar. She fell onto the sand below her and held the back her head. No liquid was oozing out which was good. But her head was dizzy and her hands were scraped with blisters. She began to cry as the pain took over. It hurt so much, she thought. Little orbs of light filled the darkness when she shut her eyes completely.

She opened them to look around wondering why no one had come to her aid when she was crying out in pain. Then her eyes landed on a boy a few feet away. His eyes wide with shock and his hands at his sides unaware of what to do. She continued crying as they kept eye contact. He never left his spot on the grass and she never left her spot on the sand. Tears still dripping down her face and her hands behind her head, pushing on the pain that seemed to grow with every second.

Finally one of the ladies who watched the kids during recess came to her side, hugging her and holding her head. "Oh baby what happened?" Julianne's body became warm with anger at the word baby. She hated being called that. She didn't like it one bit. And Keith knew that. But he still stayed on his spot.

"I...I...I hit my head." She cried as the lady helped her get up, dusting her pants from the sand. "Come on, let's go to the nurses office." And she dragged Julianne away.

Julianne looked back at Keith who was now standing up but was still on the same spot on the grass. His eyes opened wide. Julianne thought he didn't care about her because he didn't help her when she was crying in pain. But little did she know, Keith did care. Keith cared so much about the girl. She was his first and only best friend. But he didn't know how to help her then. He had never seen her cry that hard before. Only once, on the day they met. But never again. And he was scared. Scared of seeing her in pain. He didn't want to see her hurt.

Keith began to ran towards the nurses office and saw Julianne walk in and the door close behind her.

"Hi my best friend just went to the nurses office, can I go see her?" He asked, tippy toeing to speak above the desk. The blonde lady looked at him then turned to her computer.

"Wait for your friend out here. The nurse will be done with her shortly. You can sit on the bench outside the door." Keith walked out to the bench and sat down swinging his legs. He looked at the playground across the quad, hearing the screams from the kids playing. Then he heard a door open and watched Julianne slowly walk out. A bag of ice wrapped in a brown towel behind her head.

Keith got up from the bench and walked in front of her. "Are you okay?" He asked her. She was looking down at his shoes.

Keith grabbed the ice from her and held it at her head. "Are you mad at me Julianne?" He asked her as she didn't answer his first question.

She shook her head. They sat down on the bench Keith was sitting on before. Moments passed in silence. Then she took out her pinky. Keith stared at it and smiled, interlocking his pinky with hers.

"Best friends" They whispered.

Then they hugged.
