Age 15
"Oh hey! What are you doing here?" Jenni asked as I took a seat down next to her, putting my backpack on the floor next to me. The familiar sounds of shoes squeaking as they run up and down the court filled the gym.
I pointed my camera at her, "Team asked me to take some action shots." Julianne had gotten into photography the summer before, taking pictures of everything worth saving a memory for the past few months. Now realizing it was already December of 2019, and a lot of things had changed over the year, she's taken plenty of pictures.
She turned back around to her backpack and taking small peeks at the boys doing warm ups down on the court, she started getting out some supplies. She took deep breaths as her eyes roamed the court, looking for a certain someone.
She almost said no to the head coach when he had asked her to take some shots at the moment he had told her which game and which team they'd be playing. But she gave in when he said the price.
The instant her eyes found him, her stomach lurched. He looked better than ever, in every way possible. She thought the last time she had seen him, she thought he was already attractive, but now months later, he managed to bump that scale up even more. He was charming.
She sighed as she went down the steps and walked towards her school's warm up side and began taking pictures.
Keith was nervous to say at the least. He didn't know what to expect when he would see her again after how many months? 5? 6? Maybe even 10 now? He didn't know, he didn't keep track.
He almost made an excuse of being sick the day of the game, but coach had told him this was his one day, his once chance he could show that he was varsity worthy. And he wanted that varsity title so bad. So he threw out the excuse and climbed onto the bus.
He knew the moment she walked in, that she was there. Even when she had entered through the opposite side of the gym he was on and his back was facing her, he knew. His body tingled as he threw a shot, making him miss from the spasm.
He turned around to see her walk up the stairs with her pretty smile planted on her lips. She took out a camera and looked at the team he'd be playing.
He didn't know what had happened over the year, but he regretted it so much. If he had the chance to redo it all, he would.
But not tonight. He couldn't mess his chance up tonight. He turned back to his teammates and started warming up.
Julianne leaned against the wall, cracking her neck. She had been cranning her neck to get different angles throughout the game, luckily the boys won, making it an even better picture. She was waiting for her dad to pick her up since her shoes had put blisters on the back of her feet and she would limp with every step she took.
Julianne's breath hitched when she heard someone call out her name. "Ay Juge!" A familiar voice said from across the lobby. It was her tio, with Keith's school logo on his shirt. Oh crap, she thought, she totally forgot that her tio coached the sophfrosh basketball team there.
"Hey tio Richie." She piped up as she leaned in for a hug.
"What you doing here kid?" He asked her, pushing her shoulder.
She laughed at his goofiness, "The head coach here asked me to take some action shots of the team." She said, bringing her camera up to view.
"Oh shit, getting that bank I bet. I'll definitely asked you to take some shots of my team aight? You better give me that family discount!" He said as he bounced back into the gym since another game was starting again.
Her laugh died down as she looked back at the ground. Her breath getting caught in her throat every time the door to the gym would open. She was waiting for him to come out. She looked at her side to calm her breathing when someone else called out her name. She turned hoping it was him, but it wasn't. It was Danny.
Danny was a guy on the jv basketball team who was always chasing after Julianne. But she'd never give him the light of day since she's heard of his reputation. He just wanted to get in her pants.
"Hey Julianne, how were those action shots? I looked good yeah?" Danny asked, leaning one hand on the wall beside her head. She tried to move, but she was crowded into a corner.
"Oh um yeah, great. Looks great." She said as she back away into the wall. She noticed a door open behind Danny's head.
Keith opened the door to the lobby, looking at his phone, his mom had texted him saying she was outside parking. He didn't notice her there until he felt a chill go down his arm. He looked up at a corner and saw her.
A guy was leaning against her, her camera filling the space between their bodies. He felt some sort of feeling burst out of him. He didn't know what it was, but his body was hot.
He wanted to walk over there and punch the guy, but what if that's Julianne's boyfriend? What if his mom walks into the lobby and catches him? Even worse, his coach? He could get kicked off the team.
Instead he ignored her burning gaze and walked outside to the cold, freezing air. His body cooling down by the second.
He looked back at the doors and saw the two through the window. He then walked away towards his mom's car. Leaving Julianne and the mystery guy behind.
Julianne knows that he saw her. He saw her and didn't do anything. He didn't say hi or anything. He...ignored her. She felt confused with every bone in her body.
She didn't know what had caused their fall out over the months, but she thought she' be able to talk to him about it today. She was wrong.
She pushed pass Danny and blocked out his shouts from her ears and walked outside to the freezing air.
She was upset he had ignored her. She was embarrassed. Julianne disregarded the burning sensation at the back of her feet and began to walk towards her house. She texted her dad that she was going to walk home to which he never replied to.
She wanted so badly to know why he was treating her like this. Like they were strangers. But she knew she couldn't tap on his number and ask him. Her pride was too big for that. And so was his.
