Age 13
The bell has just rung, signaling school was over for the day. Keith picked up his basketball and backpack and walked with his friends in the hallways towards the school exit.
Keith has grown a couple inches over the last 3 years, now in the 8th grade, he was one of the tallest guys at the school. Meaning he can peer over everyone in the hallways and see everything.
His basketball group of friends were all shoving each other playfully in the halls, still hyped from the basketball game they had moments ago. They were all laughing at a story one of his friends was telling him when he saw a familiar face in the corner of his eyes. He turned to see a girl. His heart lurched in his body. She was holding a basketball at her hip, looking down at her phone, her head nodding to the music probably playing on her phone.
She was coming down a different hallway a few feet in front of Keith and was going the same way all the kids were going to leave the school. She hadn't seen the boy yet and he didn't want her to. His smile faltered as he stared at her. Her hair slightly bouncing form her ponytail. It had gotten a lot longer over the years as well. And he thinks he was at least almost a head taller than her now.
He was about to say something when Julianne took her headphones out and began to walk a little faster with a little skip in her feet. He was about to chase after her until he saw a boy kiss her cheek. He recognized the guy immediately.
It was Dylan, he played baseball at their school and was a pretty smart guy. Always one upping Keith at everything, everything except basketball. He was surprised when he heard Julianne becoming friends with him, because Keith thought he wasn't Julianne's type at all, he was even more surprised when Dylan had asked her out.
Everyone in their school knows about them too. They were the cutest couple in their grade, or even their school some would say.
Keith had wanted to ask the girl how she was doing and how her family was, but Dylan got in the way every time. And eventually Keith gave up. But his heart didn't.
No matter what Keith did, his heart would race at the sight of her or even the mention of her name. He just couldn't shake the feeling off. Sadly everything was broken after the first day of 6th grade. They slowly stopped hanging out, talking to each other and even texting. Keith took notice of this, but he was too scared to do anything.
Now he can't do anything at all except watch his old best friend kiss another guy and be happy for her from a distance.
