Age 10
It was the 5th grade picnic and Julianne had a migraine. She had been looking forward to this day for weeks and she didn't want her pounding head ruin the fun. So she continued playing dodgeball. The scorching sun was beaming down on the kids. Drying their wet shirts that was caused by a water balloon fight they had earlier that day.
The whole 5th grade class managed to split up into two teams to play. Both sides of the basketball court was filled with kids making it easier for them to get tagged out. Luckily Keith and Julianne were the best in their grade and they got to be on the same team. But the poor girl's headache was pulling her down. She hadn't notice a ball flying her way until Keith pulled her to his side, fortunately before she got tagged out.
The sudden movement hurt Julianne's head, making her wince in pain. Keith stared at the girl, holding her hands that was holding her head. The tie-dye shirt she was wearing almost fully dried. "Julianne are you okay?" Panic raised in his voice when he felt a ball hit his body then bouncing off hitting Julianne on the legs. They looked up to see their classmate smiling at them, proud to kill two birds with one stone.
Keith rushed Julianne off the basketball court and onto a nearby bench before any more balls can strike them again. Keith looked around for an adult who can help them, but all the teachers were by the tables and he was too nervous to go up to them.
Until he heard the familiar tune of an ice cream truck coming around the corner of the park. "I'm going to get us some ice cream okay?" Then the boy left, sprinting towards the truck, checking his pockets to make sure the $5 his mom had given him in the morning was still there.
"Hi can I have two strawberry shortcake popsicles?"
Keith walked back towards the girl, smiling from ear to ear. A popsicle in both of his hands. Julianne had moved from the bench to the swing, moving only slightly, leaning her head against the chain.
"Here you go!" Keith handed her the popsicle and sat down on the swing next to her.
"Are you okay now?" Keith asked, looking at the girl. She looked at him and smiled. "I'm okay now, thank you."
They silently finished the ice cream popsicle, now swinging lightly on the swing set. "Keith?" Julianne asked, he turned to her.
"Are you scared?" She asked looking down at the ground below her.
He shook his head. "No not really, my cousin said middle school isn't as scary as movies make it seem. We'll be okay." He moved over to hold her arm.
She smiled at him before looking in front of her. "We'll be okay."
Then they looked at each other and interlocked their pinkies. They didn't have to say it, but they already knew.

Hours Later...
"Mom!" The ten year old cried out, making her way towards the kitchen. Her dad was coming home from work and her mom was getting dinner ready.
"What's wrong nak?" The mom asked, looking at the chicken baking in the oven.
"Can I ask you something?" Julianne sat on the stools at the kitchen island as her mom leaned against it looking at her confused daughter.
She nodded her head as her child pt her head into her hands. "What's a crush?" She blurted out, staring directly at her mom.
Her mom cleared her throat and fumbled with her hands. Her mom never knew this talk would come so soon.
"Well a crush is like me and your dad. When you like someone so much you want to be with them." The girl's heart dropped.
"Do I have a crush on Keith?" Her mom knew it way before her child did, that she would end up with her best friend all along. She couldn't wait to tell her best friend which so happened to be Keith's mom.
"I don't know honey, do you?" Julianne folded her arms and set it on the table, resting her head on top.
"I don't know! I'm 10. Neveah says I do though, but I barely know her! How would she know if I have a crush on Keith if I don't even know it myself?" Julianne's mom laughed at her stressed daughter. "You'll figure it out soon enough." She kissed her child's forehead and walked away to check the chicken.
Julianne stayed sitting on the stool, millions of thoughts running through her head.
Do I like Keith? Do I like my best friend? What if he likes me back? Do we get married like mommy and dad? What if he doesn't like me back? Does our friendship end?
The questions was hurting Julianne's head.
