Sequels

Hello my sexiest, scrumptious roasted potatoes tossed in garlic olive oil.

So today I am writing a very serious entry. One that I quite genuinely hate sometimes and that is - sequels.

This entry is dedicated to those who are interested in my process of writing sequels and to those who keep asking me for them.

If you are one of the latter - I probably told you go here after you asked for a sequel on a story. Hi. Now pay attention.

Sequels are a tough thing to write. Even more tough than a simple fanfiction. Not only because you already have a set backstory that you cannot change midway, but also because THERE ARE EXPECTATIONS.

Today I will be using my own fanfictions as examples of what you should and shouldn't do, how I feel, where I failed and what I achieved.

First things first, I used to be very gullible and easily persuaded because I cared not about the quality of the story, but the satisfaction of certain readers. Because of me wanting to get them to continue reading my shit, I made some terrible decisions - I wrote unplanned sequels.

Example 1, The Cafe of Dreams.
The sequel - The Hall of Broken Hearts.

Completely uncalled for. I was simply overtaken by Euphoria of getting a lot of reads and decided to do anything that would keep that going - so without even thinking I wrote a sequel. Thing is, TCOD is already trash as it is, so writing a sequel on an already trash piece of writing only added fuel to the fire.

The sequel is supposed to add something to the already existing story or tell another story that is closely related - THOBK did none of that. It's just there. Completely pointless.

Example 2, Fallen Angel.
The sequel - Paradise.

The result of me not being able to keep my stance and reacting to comments. People wanted a happy ending, so without thinking a wrote the shittiest sequel ever written.

I can't even call it a sequel. I didn't plan it out, I didn't think about anything - I just... wrote. Again, it adds nothing to the story.

Some stories/one-shots I write simply do not deserve sequels because THERE IS NO FURTHER PLOT.

Example 1, Atlantis.

I said everything that needs to be said. Even though the story could have been written much better, I still see no point for a sequel.

To write a sequel, you need a plot. You need to think about WHY you are writing and WHAT you want to continue.

Atlantis has nothing to continue.

Example 2, Youngblood.

This one, quite frankly, pisses me off. I have no idea why anyone would even ask for a sequel on this. I clearly stated a very toxic relationship so why would anyone want Akaashi to suffer again?

Gets my blood going.

Now, let's get to sequels I actually like and ones I am planning.

Sometimes it takes me actual years to finally publish a sequel to the story. Sometimes I know what I want to continue on.

Example 1, MAMA.
Sequel - Euphoria.

I wrote MAMA with a thought that I might write a sequel for it - already that's important.

Once I did decide to do that, I knew what I wanted to write. I knew what I had to explore. I knew what relationships I had to rekindle.

Example 2, Begin.
Sequel - Spring Day.

Very recent as I published Spring Day literally 2 days ago, but Begin finished in 2018. Yes, that long ago. I knew for a while - Begin must have a sequel. I knew vaguely what I wanted to convey but I had no idea how to convey it.

Finally it came to me. And I wrote the entire story before I even published it. I planned it, I separated it into sections, I knew what I wanted to develop. So, please look forward to it, I cannot say much as I don't want to spoil anything.

Example 3, Jungle Boy.
Sequel - ????.

It's something that I want to write. As of now, I am developing certain plot points that I could explore. Let me remind you, Jungle Boy ended on a cliffhanger - always good for when you write a sequel.

And now not completely off topic, but I have a passion project.

The rewritten version of The Cafe of Dreams.

I called it the Broken People Project.

It's something that I am planning slowly, but once I do get to it... oh boy.

Anyway, that being said - please stop asking me for sequels. I am... so tired.

-hatari.
