i do genuinely believe those that faded away are trapped in the soul stone but here's a sad angsty theory just to mentally prepare myself for sadness.

(keep in mind this is just a theory and not to be taken too seriously.)

IMAGINE if those who faded away aren't trapped in the soul stone, but, they're actually dead. the only way they can come back is through time travel, and going back into the past, and amending things so thanos never gets the stones in the first place.

so we go back to a time line where bucky is still the winter soldier.

we go back to a time line where the guardians never met.

we go back to a time line where tony never approached peter, and peter never met his idol. he never knew that tony saw him as a son. he never knew that tony cared so much when he cradled his body as he died. he never knew the blame and hatred that tony put upon himself, and he never knew that tony sacrificed himself for him.
