"Niylah said we can work in here, so how do we do this?"
The wristband made a thud when it bounced on the table as Clarke tossed it. Raven was still making muffled shouts in the background, but Harley blocked her friend's animal-like cries out and instead focused on how they could help her. She stared at the wristband for a minute, remembering the feeling when she had her own. The pins digging past her skin weren't so comfortable, alike to the well forming bruise on her face, but it wasn't too long ago when Harley thought they were an important object. Now, the wristband was again, that is, if they can decode what Raven wanted to do.
"We think Raven wanted to use this wristband to generate an EMP," Sinclair said. "Which is... Freakishly brilliant."
"Meaning what?" Bellamy urged, his arms crossed over his chest from where he stood behind Clarke.
Harley barely understood what Sinclair had said in reply, left confused, but still hung on every word. "A targetted electromagnetic pulse could destroy the chips circuitry. We could use this to send an EMP along Raven's own nervous system," he explained. "Just need to reverse the polarity, a wire for external input and attach of battery."
The confusion Harley felt changed to an emotion of worry quickly. "How safe is it?" She asked the engineer. "Could it..." Her voice trailed off, concerned if it could hurt Raven more than with a zap from a battery.
Sinclair shook his head. "It won't," he said reassuringly, like he understood what Harley was trying to finish with. "EMPs don't affect our bodies." Harley breathed a sigh of relief. "But I don't know the mechanics of how this chip integrates with her brain."
"This was Raven's plan," Bellamy reminded Sinclair. "She wouldn't do it if it would destroy her brain."
The curtain separating them from Raven was drawn back and Octavia appeared, running her thumb over her lower lip before cutting in with a blunt statement. "Depends on how bad she wanted it out."
"Regardless," Sinclair interrupted, his tone slightly on edge from what Octavia had lowly said. "Without an electromagnet, this is just talk."
"Where do we get one?" Clarke questioned.
Shoulders slumping forward, Sinclair hesitated before answering reluctantly. "The Ark." A shared, collective defeated tenseness dropped over them. It wasn't an option, not by what Jasper informed them. "Every station had a pulse inductive thruster - " He tried to convince them.
Bellamy stopped him quickly. "Arkadia's out of the question," he stated strictly. "You remember what they said."
Harley couldn't have been more proud when Monty spoke up, her friend's face lighting up with an idea. "We use the dropship. It has PI thrusters just like the Ark," he proclaimed.
"That's good," Sinclair complimented, approving Monty's suggestion. "Okay, I'll go salvage the magnet."
"Uh, no," Monty protested, quickly stopping him. "You should stay with Raven and figure out how this thing works. I'll take the rover, be back by the time you finish the device," he offered, like a trip in the woods was any safer.
Frowning, Harley took a step in his way before he could run to the exit. "Wait, it still isn't safe out there, Monty," she told him, as worried as she was with Raven. "You shouldn't go alone."
Knowing that Harley was right, Octavia cleared her throat. "I'll go with you," she declared, much to Harley and Bellamy's dislike. Harley herself had a feeling that she only wanted to tag along because of the danger mentioned. Octavia glared at her brother when he opened his mouth, about to disagree with her. "Don't."
The sharpness in Octavia's tone hung as she stormed after Monty, following him outside of the shelter without another look back. Harley watched the back of her head disappear, feeling distressed that she couldn't protest when she was the one to suggest Monty couldn't go alone. Then, Harley had to remember who this was for. Raven was not only not herself, but she was suffering from the chip in her head.
"Guys! Guys!" Harley snapped out of her thoughts, her head whipping to the side at the sound of panic evident in his voice. She rushed after Bellamy and Clarke, dashing into the room only to stop suddenly at the sight. Raven was slumped against the bed, still tied, but that hadn't seem to stop her from trying to break free of her restraints.
But that wasn't what made Harley's eyes become wide like saucers with a gasp. It was the shoulder bone popped out of place, the bone prominently positioned out. Her other arm was gushing blood, from the deep gash she made into her own arms. "Stop her!" Clarke demanded, running to her aid.
"Get that side! Harley, help Jasper!" Bellamy exclaimed, talking to the two at once. Harley moved into action, joining Jasper on the right side of the bed. She felt sick at the sight of Raven's bone, but she held down her arm flat against the post.
"She's reopened her wounds," Clarke noted, her hands clutching the injury. They became slick with dark red blood in seconds, but Raven wasn't making it so easy.
Harley struggled to hold her arm down as Raven thrashed around, screeching. "Get away from me! Get away from me!" Harley gritted her teeth, struggling to keep Raven's arm pinned down. She was much more built than Harley, but she refused to give up, sure her fingers were leaving bruises that could match the one on her face she had received.
"She's gonna bleed to death!" Clarke called over her screams. "I need bandages!"
Quickly moving from Harley to the needed supply, Jasper swiped them from Clarke's medical bag. "I got them."
Raven started making it much more difficult at the mention of helping her. She was growling now, the deep rumble coming from her throat as she struggled to slip out of their grips. "Bellamy, take her wrists," Clarke directed, fighting to get the bandages wrapped around her wrist. "Raven, stop fighting us!"
Another growl came from Raven as her head whipped from side to side, glaring from Harley on her right to Clarke on her left. Her dark gaze landed on Harley for a moment and she sneered out lowly; "Let me go."
For a second, Harley's grip slipped from the fear of not only Raven's words but the way she glared at her. When she felt Raven nearly move out of her hold, she snapped out of it, being sure to hold on much tighter. Raven threw her head back a few times when realizing no one was going to let her break free, a mixture of cries and snarls coming from her. Despite the unfortunate situation, Harley couldn't help but be glad that she couldn't feel any pain.
"ALIE," Jasper finally spoke, leaning over the edge of the bed while looking directly into her cold eyes as she sneered in response. "ALIE. I know you can hear this, why are you doing this to her? Let her go!"
The way Raven suddenly paused had Harley shudder. She was flailing and growling one minute and the next completely still. "I'll let her go when you give me what I want. " Harley froze, listening to the way she talked so calmly. It wasn't Raven talking.
While Raven fell slack, Clarke took advantage of the time to quickly wrap the still bleeding slash on her arm. Raven's head swiveled to face her, her voice much more robotic and like ice. "The technology that Clarke carries, it belongs to me."
"Raven - " Harley whispered desperately, but was stopped when Raven's head snapped to face her, barring her teeth in warning to back off. Harley almost immediately did, frightened at the way it was a clear threat.
"Clarke," Jasper interrupted, narrowing his eyes in her direction.
Clarke shook her head. "No way," she stated.
"Just give it to her!" Jasper argued. Clarke didn't respond, but Harley could see she was still refusing yet arguing internally with herself whether or not to do so. "Clarke!"
This time, Clarke spoke, but only to Raven. She leaned forward, making sure they were connecting equally sharp stares. "If you let Raven die, you'll never get it," she promised. Raven looked forward for a moment, into nothing, before leaning back and submitting to allow help. Harley lets out a breath, releasing the hold she had. "Untie her wrists," Clarke told them. "Hold her steady."
Once Raven's wrists were free, Harley held her up switching positions with Clarke and pressing against Raven's shoulder that wasn't dislocated with one hand. The other held Raven's cut that wasn't wrapped correctly in the rush. Clarke braced her foot, grabbing her friends arm and pulling it forward. Harley winced at the sickening pop sound it made once it had been put back into place, seeing she hadn't even flinched.
Bellamy's hands worked to tie Raven's wrists down again, this time more carefully. "Clarke, she's never gonna stop trying to get away," he said. "We can't let her hurt herself again. Someone has to stay with her."
"I'll take first watch," Clarke offered. She circled the bed again, joining Harley's side with more fresher bandages. "We'll take turns."
Despite Clarke meaning no harm by her suggestion, Jasper grew angry again. "You don't give the orders, Clarke!" He exclaimed to her, his chest heaving from the pants, like he was in physical pain from the memories.
Raven's head tilted, her dark eyes flickering from Jasper to Clarke. "Guess he doesn't forgive you for murdering his girlfriend," she said with a grin.
The statement had Harley feeling sick with remembrance of Mount Weather, people she hardly knew, but knowing they had deserved better. Jasper turned away, unable to face Raven, although aware that it wasn't really her talking. She'd never say something so horrible.
"Jasper," Bellamy stopped him, speaking gently. "Take a break."
Even though Harley expected Jasper to argue, he left without a complaint, and Bellamy followed after him. From her side, Clarke cleared her throat to get her attention. "Harley, can you give me a hand?" The hand holding the end of a bandage bumped into Harley's, who nodded, grabbing the corner and pulling it over Raven's arm tightly in a weave.
The silence between them was deafening. Raven was watching intensely as Harley helped, and she had a feeling it was to find out how she could taunt them next. Clarke hadn't noticed, finishing the bandaging and letting out a heavy sigh like it ached to talk. "Harley, I have to tell you something." Curious yet confused, Harley picked her head up. She could read the remorse on the other's face. "It's about Murphy."
The name had Harley feeling her heart tug. She hasn't heard the name in the same way for so long. Whenever Murphy was mentioned, it was that nobody came across him. Harley was sure they wouldn't even keep an eye out if she hadn't begged. But Clarke said it not only in guilt but also familiarity. "What is it?" She asked almost eagerly.
"Did she kill him too?" Raven's question had Harley not sure if she was breathing for a minute. "Come on, Harley. She could have killed you in Tondc," she reminded her, seeming to eager to get a rise out of the already fragile girl. "Clarke'll do anything for herself." The final words came out as a snarl.
"Harley, I - " Before Clarke could finish, Harley slipped away, hurrying out of the room. She didn't want to hear Clarke tell her that her brother, who she spent so long convincing herself was still alive, had died.
At least, for now, here, Harley wanted to continue pretending that Murphy was alright.
━━━━━━━━
Harley wasn't the only one Raven had been prepared to taunt. She had sat in another room, listening through thin walls, as she spoke to both Jasper and Bellamy who were on guard. Last time, with Clarke, it hadn't ended well. It started with Jasper, tormenting him about Maya and his time in Mount Weather before they were wiped out by Clarke, Bellamy and Monty; his friends. Harley wasn't in the control room with them, but she remembered the way Maya burst into blisters and burned to death from the radiation, along with every in the mess hall. The image was permanently printed into her brain.
The storming of footsteps had Harley flinching in surprise, seeing it was from Jasper. He had a hard yet broken expression as he passed by them, walking outside. Not wanting Bellamy to be alone, Harley rose, brushing aside the curtain and giving Bellamy a timid smile as she took a seat in the corner, unsure if this was something he could handle alone. Raven had just finished mocking him about The Culling, Mount Weather, and his mother. Yet, he didn't reply, much less look at her.
Raven continued talking like Harley hadn't walked in. "...Clarke's back for one day and you're already taking orders. The good little knight by his queen's side." Her tone was more icy now, and Harley could see she was digging into Bellamy's skin. "Too bad you were never that devoted to Gina."
"You don't know what you're talking about," Bellamy finally mumbled.
"Don't worry," Raven taunted. "Gina was already dead when Mount Weather blew up." Her head turned, flopping to the side as she made direct eye contact with Harley. "Shame that I can't say the same for Clover." Harley leaned back in her seat, knowing that this wasn't Raven and she shouldn't get to her, but she can feel herself grow stiff, wishing she never walked in at all.
"If you had stayed, they'd still be alive, right?" Raven went on, speaking to the both of them now. "But no. A grounder was more important. And even though you both suffered, I think we all know who had to lash out. Harley's a bit too naive, almost like, a coward, right Bellamy?"
Harley brushed her hair out of her face, pretending the insult didn't sting. "So you avenged your friend, your girlfriend, and all those people, huh? I mean, you picked up a gun and slaughtered an army that was sent to protect us." Raven sickly smiled. "That had nothing to do with blowing sweet Gina to bits but hey. A Grounder's a Grounder."
This time, Raven's final words echo through the shelter. It catches the attention of Niylah who stomps into the room, a look of betrayal on her face as she heads straight for Bellamy who stands at the sight of her. "My father, you - "
Bellamy holds his hands out, prepared to calm her down. "Niylah - "
"You killed him!" Niylah's hand comes forward, striking him across the face.
Harley catches herself gasping at the action, standing to rush and grab Bellamy's shoulder to pull him back. He stumbled reluctantly in her direction while Clarke holds Niylah back. "Niylah, you can't be in here," she warned her.
"It's too late," Jasper says from the opening. "Raven's already seen her. ALIE knows we're here." Glancing behind her, Harley realizes that he's right. Raven is staring at them both with a deliberate grin. It wouldn't be too long before they'd be caught.
It hadn't mattered what they do. They still had time, and they would have to wait for Octavia and Monty to return. Bellamy left outside to breathe and Harley remained in Raven's room, on her feet and ignoring the way her eyes followed the way she paced.
Harley felt cornered when Clarke entered, recognizing the look on her face, matching the one from their earlier talk. "Please don't," she mumbled, fighting back the tears pricking the corners of her eyes. "Please just let me believe he's still alive."
"No," Clarke protested, sounding desperate now. "Harley, he's alive."
Blood running cold, Harley stopped pacing, picking her head up. She wanted to cry more now, not with sadness from mourning, but relief. "What?" The single word came out small and broken, almost like she was expecting Clarke to take it back.
"He's in Polis. He's alive."
Harley could have fell over at the admission. For a moment, she had thought she might, by the way she lost feeling in her legs. But there wasn't much time for Harley to process it. She could continue standing there, dumbfounded, but Sinclair was running into the room. "Everyone let's go!" In his hands was the battery they needed, connected to what he had made. Monty and Octavia were behind him, along with Bellamy and Jasper. "All we have to do is connect her and activate the electromagnet."
Harley shook off the heavy weight, trying to think of Raven right now, and not Murphy. She stepped next to Octavia, who was untying her left wrist. Once they started circling her, she started struggling. "Hold her still!" Sinclair demanded as he set up the wristband and machine.
"Raven stop it!" Clarke commanded as Raven fought to try and hit anyone who came to close. Harley grasped her wrist holding it against the post as Octavia pressed down on her arm. Monty struggled to keep her still on the other side before Bellamy and Jasper appeared to help.
Realizing that she wasn't getting out of their hold, Raven started throwing her head back, smashing it against the back of the bed. Each hit she made rattled the bed, beginning to spot blood. "She's trying to kill herself!" Bellamy exclaimed in shock.
"Raven, no!" Harley exclaimed in a cry.
Octavia jumped forward, releasing her arm that Harley quickly grabbed and pressing her hand against Raven's forehead. "Stop it!" She begged as she thrashed around, trying to throw her head back again harder.
It all stopped when Clarke spoke up. "Stop and I'll give you this."
Raven froze, gazing to Clarke to see she was holding up the same chip. Noticing she was still, Sinclair managed to clip the wristband on her wrist, sending her into another fit. "No, you lied!" She shrieked. "You lied!" Her head whipped to the side, seeing Sinclair setting up the machine. "No, please don't!" Raven pleaded with him. "The EMP will give me brain damage! You know it will!" She cried. "Please don't do this!"
Wanting to cry, Harley tried to block her out, reminding herself they had to. Raven was only trying to stop them. "Don't listen to her," Octavia reminded them in a command.
"Please!" Raven cried out over her, sobbing real tears and struggling more. "You know it will! Sinclair, stop!"
"We've only got one try. This the EMP will fry the wristband too," Sinclair informed them, his voice cracking as he tried to ignore her once he finished connecting the wires.
"Do it!" Bellamy demanded. "Do it!"
Sinclair finally complied. He flipped the switch to his design. Harley waited, for something to happen, anything, but Raven was still fighting with wide eyes. Even Sinclair was confused when Jasper asked what was happening. "Nothing," he replied. "The batteries not strong enough."
"Then get one that is!" Clarke exclaimed.
Monty looked to his side, meeting Sinclair's stare and having the same realization. "The rover." As soon as the words leave his mouth, he runs out of the room.
"Sinclair, hold her!" Bellamy ordered, waiting until the engineer had a safe grip on her arm before grabbing his gun and following Monty.
In the minute they were gone, Raven continued to try and fight them, this time harder. Harley felt guilty at the way they had to forcefully hold her down, urging her friends to hurry. They came back just as fast, this time with the new battery. At the sight of it, Raven started screaming, nearly pulling her arm out of Harley's clasp. "I got it!" Monty shouted over her, hooking the battery up.
"Guys, we have to move!" Bellamy ordered.
"Got it!" Monty at last declared. He grabbed the lever, pulling it downwards.
This time, Raven reacted. There was a buzz as Raven threw her head back for a final time, screaming before her eyes fell shut and she weakly fell limp. Harley's grip slowly released, her jaw dropping. Had what they done killed her?
Clarke checked quickly, pressing her fingers to her neck to check for a pulse. "She's breathing," she confirmed before gently shaking her shoulder. "Raven? Come on, Raven."
"Raven?" Harley whispered, brushing the stray hairs off her forehead, unable to believe she wasn't going to wake up. She was happy, but it changed too fast. "Raven, please."
"Wake up," Clarke pleaded. "Come on, Raven."
From where he was mumbling in the background, Jasper finally snapped. He snatched a metal bar and the chip's box hanging in Clarke's pocket. "What are you doing?!" Clarke shouted as he set the chip on the table.
"ALIE did that to Raven, she's never gonna get this!" Jasper stated, raising the metal bar above his head, ready to smash it.
"No, you can't! No, stop!" Clarke cried. "It's Lexa!" At the mention of the deceased commander, Harley stopped suddenly, feeling sorrow as Clarke broke down. "Part of her is still there, I saw them but it out of her head, I'm not..." She babbled before trailing off like something hit her.
"What is it?" Bellamy urged her.
"Both the AIs were made by the same person," Clarke noted. "Both tap into human conciseness, they must work similarly right?" She asked Sinclair.
Sinclair nodded after thinking it over. "There's a probability of one pathway into conciseness, so yeah," he agreed.
Holding Raven's arm, Octavia asked Clarke; "What does this have to do with anything?" She questioned eagerly.
"I've seen an AI get removed before," Clarke declared, joining them at the bed. "Help me get her on her side!" Harley and Octavia carefully worked on the count of three to roll Raven over until she was on her side. Monty rushed to grab Clarke's request for her med kit, returning with the bag.
The glimmer of the scalpel Clarke pulled out had not only Harley nervous, but Sinclair. "Woah, what...?" He stopped her.
"It's okay," Clarke told him, sounding sure as she pressed the blade to the back of Raven's neck.
"How does this help?" Harley whispered in question as Clarke dragged it downwards, blood appearing in a cascade.
"It'll get the chip out," Clarke replied. "Hand me a cloth." Harley took her hand off Raven's shoulder from where it kept her steady, grabbing a cloth on top of a pillow and handing it to her. She balled it up, pressing it to Raven's new injury while speaking to herself, hushed. "This has to work."
It was quiet as they watched Raven bleed, waiting, before a thick goop mixed with Raven's blood flowed out, sliding down her neck. Harley was taken by surprise, whispering to herself. "Oh. Ew."
"What is that?" Bellamy asked.
"It must be whatever's left of the chip," Sinclair mused.
All of a sudden, Raven started to stir before she let out a few short coughs. Harley wanted to cry in relief again as she woke up, her hand rising to reach behind her and tough the cut Clarke made. "Ow," she whined.
Sinclair eagerly grabbed her arm. "Get her up." Harley gently rubbed her shoulder as she assisted Octavia in lifting Raven up slowly.
A smile spread on Octavia's face. "Never thought I'd be so happy to see someone in pain," she commented.
The first to laugh was Raven, and Harley joined her, rubbing her thumb in circles on Raven's shoulder as she fully sat up. "How're you feeling?" She asked, unable to rub the smile off despite still being concerned.
"Like someone cut my neck," Raven groaned.
Although they were happy, Monty hung back, speaking to himself slowly to where Harley could hardly hear him but she was astonished at what he said. "I could have saved my mom..."
Jasper, who had once been his best friend, gently touched his shoulder. "Hey..."
The attempt of comfort had Monty snapping, slapping Jasper's hand away forcefully. "Get the hell away from me!" Before running away, leaving the rest stunned by his outburst.
"ALIE knows we're here," Bellamy broke the quiet with his serious rough voice. "We gotta move."
The cold night air felt good, Harley thought, after everything that had happened. It was comforting to be in as they loaded the rover, preparing to leave. For now, it was over. They could catch their breath. Harley sighed in content, hiking a bag over her shoulder further and approaching the open back of the vehicle where Raven rested.
"Hey," Raven greeted her and Jasper. "I'm so sorry for all the crap I said."
Understanding the apology, Harley nodded with a comforting smile. It had seemed so long ago that she was thinking of Clover and Murphy. "No hard feelings," she promised. "I'm just glad you're better."
"Uh, and for punching me in the face, right?" Jasper checked.
"No." Raven shook her head with no regret or guilt. "You definitely deserved that." Jasper let out a short laugh, leaving the two girls. "I am sorry about hitting you though, Harley," she said, this time genuine, noticing the bruise that blossomed on her cheek.
"Hey," Clarke interrupted, nudging past the group to approach Raven. "There's one thing I don't understand. Why did ALIE want you to kill yourself?"
Raven hesitated, the smile dropping as she answered. "Because I know why she wants the second AI. It's the only thing that can stop her."
This was bigger than anything they've had to face, Harley realized. It was only this small group against an entire army from all the clans. She inhaled sharply at the fact.
"Then let's stop her," Octavia boldly declared, holding her chin up in determination. "We survive together."
