There had always been something between Harley and Octavia that made them close. Octavia was the first to throw her arm in front of her when she sensed a threat, there was always lingering gazes and contact between them. It shouldn't have been a surprise that a loving action happened between them, here on Luna's rig, where they felt safe enough, away from another upcoming war. There was a notion that made her feel like this was right, declaring a deep love for Octavia without words but an action. It was something they'd have to discuss, in private, but for now, with Clarke and Bellamy here, it was a conversation that would have to wait.
Jasper was the one gone, a good distance away from the group, talking to the girl who told the shark story. With them closer, Harley could see she's pretty, with dark skin and braided hair peeking out from a scarf tied around her head. She had a wide grin on her face, staring at Jasper with adoration who shyly smiled back as they spoke to one another.
Even Bellamy noticed from where he was observing the two. "Jasper's actually smiling," he noted. He was amused for a minute before his glance turned to Clarke, who was instead eyeing Luna with both frustration and anger. Bellamy sighed. "Clarke, let it go."
"We can't just leave," Clarke argues, hushed.
"We can't just forcefully put the Flame in her head either," Harley rightfully reminds her, missing the way Clarke's blue eyes flickered up with an idea.
"We have to leave," Octavia whispers to them. "It isn't like we have much of a choice."
The gleam in Clarke's eyes doesn't fade as she tightens her sharp jaw. "Maybe we do," she comments with a serious tone.
Bellamy sits up a bit straighter, like he deciphered Clarke's look whereas Harley couldn't. "What are you talking about?" He asked her.
"I'm talking about putting this into her head without asking."
The way Clarke declared such a sharp statement icily had Harley feeling her chest settle uneasily. She knew Clarke always took the leader position, and did what she had to save everyone, but there was too much wrong with this one decision. Clarke was deciding to put a chip in someone's head that controlled them without their consent was a violation to not only their own choice but their body. Luna said no, and that was supposed to be the end of their plan. Harley felt a wave of disgust thinking that Clarke was choosing to put a device into her head without her consent.
"No way, Clarke!" Octavia hissed after giving her a look of astonishment. "This isn't like Emerson. He was trying to kill us!"
"You think I don't know that?" Clarke counters.
"So you think our only option is to violate Luna's consent and free will?" Harley objected, anger behind her words. Clarke's lips press tightly together, showing she disliked this, but feeling as if there was no other alternative to this. Harley couldn't understand how she felt as if this was the only choice to get her way.
Leaning forward, Bellamy shifted closer to Clarke, bringing her voice low enough for only them to hear. "Clarke, we don't have to do this," he says calmly. "We can fight, we can go back to Arkadia, we can arm up."
"Fight who?" Clarke fires back. "It's an army of our own people. I don't like this any more than you do," she admits somberly. "But if Raven's right and the code on this thing can stop ALIE..." She trailed off, shoulders slumping forward before making a soft request. "Give me a better idea." Harley swallows the lump in her throat, both of her hands coming to press against her lower face. She hated this, and hated to face the truth, but Clarke was right. They couldn't stop an army who felt no pain, an army of innocent people who could only be killed to stop. She knew this was who they were now, to survive.
There isn't another option, they come to realize. This was wrong and horrible, but it was their only decision.
"We'll stay here," Bellamy said after a beat of silence, understanding Clarke and taking her side as he always had. "It's the only way they'll leave you alone with her."
Clarke heaves a short sigh before pushing herself to her feet, prepared to leave, but Octavia stops her. "Even ALIE gives people a choice," she says angrily, the words coming out spiteful as she referred to their computer enemy, who may be cruel, but at least didn't force her chips in people's heads. It made Harley's head hung lower.
"We gave Luna a choice," Bellamy told his sister. "She said no."
"Whatever you have to tell yourself to think this is okay." Harley glares as she says so, seeing that Clarke stiffens before walking away to where Luna had exited with her followers.
Watching Clarke leave was deeply complex, that Harley chose to tear her gaze away. She couldn't bear the idea of this happening to Luna, or anything worse going wrong. She could understand there wasn't another option for them, it was the only way to save everyone, not just their people. Harley's stare landed on Octavia, who's finger tips were just brushing over her lower arm. She hated how she thought for a moment that she hoped this wouldn't work.

Harley felt worse when she was glad that Clarke's plan didn't work. It failed when she attempted to put the Flame in Luna's head, and had somehow lost the chip in the process. Luna held it hostage until their time came to leave. Harley admired the peace they had here, and how kind the grounders were, but she was pleased they were heading off before Clarke had another plan and, or, something went wrong. Hope wasn't lost, not yet. They could come up with another idea to stop ALIE.
The same metal box Harley woke up in greeted her as her and her friends walked the direction they had been led. Bellamy looked from each of them, like a mother rooster counting their hens, before noticing a missing member. "Where's Jasper?"
"Saying good-bye to his new friend," Octavia answered simply.
Harley's chin lifted, thinking back to the grounder girl telling the shark story who Jasper seemed to really like. Now, he'd have to leave her for who knew how long. Maybe even forever. "That's a shame," she mumbled, sad, as the door unlocked for them to enter to reveal the same people that brought them here.
"Sorry, Cap," Luna greeted the man in lead. "You gotta take them back." He nodded as she tossed a heavy, black bag inside which made a loud thud when it landed. Luna turned to face the expectant group. "Your gear," she explained shortly. "You get your weapons once you land."
A crew member gave Bellamy a harsh shove first. "Inside," he ordered.
Another stared at Harley, dark eyes beneath thick eyebrows with a warning in them. She shrunk back at the unspoken words, head bowing as she shuffled forward. Her boots left a dull clang noise with each step into the metal box, echoing along with the others. Clarke was the last one inside, whirling to face Luna with remembrance of her prized possession. "The Flame?" She requested.
Luna dug into her pocket, pulling out the chip and holding it in between her two fingers. "Remember, Clarke," she begins calmly. "The path of violence is a choice."
"When the choice is to fight or die, there is no choice," Clarke retorts pointedly with frustration in her tone. She reaches for the Flame, prepared to take it.
Before Clarke can get close enough, the scary man who forced Harley and Octavia in together swings his arm forward, striking Octavia on the side of the face and pushing her back straight into Harley. She catches her quickly before they both fall, wrapping her arms tightly around the other in pain. Shocked, Harley's jaw drops as they push the rest of them back without giving them time to react while they pulled Luna back and the door slammed shut. A lock clicks in place.
"What's happening?!" Harley called in panic through the dark, helping Octavia steady herself onto her feet until she was securely stable.
"They took the flame," Octavia stated, wiping the drop of blood from the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. "They're locking us in."
"Hey!" Clarke shouted, pounding her fist on the door. "What is this?!"
Harley brushed the hair hanging in her face back, more dread settling in. "They didn't just lock us," she says in realization. This wasn't just against them. "They took Luna."
"Luna's people are attacking her," Bellamy finishes. "ALIE's here." At his final words, he dashes to the bag thrown in and starts digging through it for weapons. Struck with more terror than panic, Harley covers her mouth. She didn't consider it was possible for ALIE to find a way to follow them here, from being so cut off of civilization on land. But it happened.
They couldn't break out, which was registered quickly. Bellamy had tried ramming his burly shoulder into the door repeatedly after handing out their weapons, but only received a sore limb after awhile. They had to be prepared for anything to hit them, which had been why Harley's handgun was back to where it had been. Even Octavia had her sword back in its sheath, but she was holding a flashlight, beaming it at the ground. "How did ALIE even find this place?" She questioned.
"There was a drone at Niylah's," Bellamy responded. "She must have followed us looking for the flame and now she has it." A silence falls over them, followed by Octavia punching the door once more in frustration, before he continues. "She's gonna put the AI in Luna."
"She'd have to chip her first," Clarke adds from where she had propped herself against the wall. "If Luna is chipped before she gets the AI, ALIE will know everything." Determined, she pushes herself forward. "We can't let that happen." She started forward, storming to the door like the others and slamming her palm on it while shouting; "Hey!"
Harley's head rested back as she drew in a deep breath. She knew banging on the walls and door wouldn't do anything, the action hadn't for what could have been hours. She pressed her back to the wall, sinking down with her knees pressed to her chest. Harley knew they were all at a loss of what to do now. She thought deciding what to do with the chips being planted everywhere was their biggest issue, but now, there couldn't be an escape from here.
A thud hit the ground next to Harley. She turned her head to see Octavia with a defeated look and bruised knuckles. She timidly smiled to the other, equally worn out by the circumstances they were stuck in. Clarke and Bellamy were sat on the other side, wearing what Harley could only assume were crushed expressions as well. She let out a sigh, leaning to the side and resting her head on Octavia's right shoulder. It felt right, as it always had, but Harley's mind was whirring with thought of dark fear.
"This place was safe until we got here," Octavia mumbled, lowering the flashlight before tilting her head to the side as well until her temple was rested on Harley's head.
"Jasper was right, then." Harley thought back to their earlier talk, knowing now, they really were only bad luck and bringers of death.
As soon as the words left Harley's mouth, there was another clang from outside that caused their heads to snap in that direction. A crack appears before the door slowly slides open, the moonlight pouring in. Harley's heart skips a beat as she jumps to her feet with the others, racing towards the entrance. As she steps through, her breath hitches in her throat before she gasps at the view.
A girl is laying on the ground with an arrow lodged in her back, fallen from her limbs unable to support her anymore. "Oh my God," Clarke whispers, crouching beside her to check the injury done before realizing there was nothing she could do.
The damaged girl's head turned, leaving Harley to finally catch a glimpse of her face more clearly. She recognizes her immediately. Jasper's friend who told the shark story helped them at her final dying moments, and they didn't even know her name. "Machine room..." she tells them weakly, blood spilling from her lips. "...B Level..." She releases one last unsteady breath before falling slack.
"She saved us," Harley whispered out loud. This peaceful grounder saved them when they had done nothing but brought death to her home, even were the reason for her death. "She didn't even know us."
Which could have only meant one possible thing. Jasper had to be in as much trouble as Luna. The truth hits Clarke and she stared at the with a sad gaze before motioning for them to follow her. "Let's go."
The four of them sprint across the oil rig, searching for the exact location the dying girl had given them. The last time Harley was out here, she remembered how alive this place was, with people conversing and laughing with one another. Now, she noticed as she ran, just how completely deserted it was. And it was all their fault.
Following signs, the group of four managed to make it to the correct room. Octavia announced their arrival with a point of her finger, wiggling the locked door knob, before kicking the door open harshly with a grunt, startling Harley as the hinges pop off and the door swings open. "O, be careful!" Bellamy called as Octavia is the first to dash inside. Harley is on her heels, flying in on alarm, only to come to a horrible sight.
Luna was crouched, curly hair wet and sticking to her skin as she cradled a dying man with a knife in his chest in her arms. She was letting out choked sobs, gently caressing his face. "Oh no," she cried. "I'm sorry." As she finishes her cries, the man dies in her arms.
Hearing Luna wail in agony had Harley's boots planted where they were. Bellamy had run to help the scared little girl while Octavia went to help Jasper, who was hanging by his bound wrists, mumbling to Octavia that he was fine. At least they didn't break him, but for the rest, she couldn't say so. Harley's eyes filled with tears as she kept her eyes locked on Luna, listening to her grieving.
"I'm so sorry," Luna kept repeating in a wrenching voice as she buried his head closer to her neck. "I'm so sorry." She sobbed, stroking his face before throwing her head back and wailing again in more pain. The sound bounces off the walls, echoing in their ears. Harley sniffles, every good thought pushed out of her head. She knew she couldn't forget this; the image of death that they had brought permanently stained in her brain.
━━━━━━━━
A fire's glow illuminated the mess hall from candles where everyone resided, respectfully having a funeral for those they had lost. Looking around the area, Harley could see the looks of mourning on everyone. After the deaths, Luna had pulled herself together long enough after the horror to inform the small group that she would accept the Flame and become the next commander. It was hard to know that it took the death of her people to accept it, but Harley wanted to be glad they could move on and stop it from happening again.
While standing with her hands crossed in front of her, Bellamy leaned over to Clarke on the other side of her and speaks quietly. "Any one of them could be chipped and we'd never know."
"If they are, they'll make their move before we put the Flame in Luna," Clarke responds before warning them. "Stay sharp."
The pair grow quiet as a woman approaches them with a platter of five goblets on it, Luna beside her, holding her own. Octavia and Jasper take one first, and as Harley receives her, she remains polite and faintly smiles. The other only keeps a blank stare, but her glossy eyes show how much she hurts while Clarke and Bellamy accepts their own.
"The ceremony is about to begin," Luna informs them softly before turning to leave.
"Luna, wait." Clarke stopped her before speaking sincerely. "I'm so sorry. But now you see what we're facing. An enemy that will do anything to win." Harley expects Luna's expression to change, but she continues to stare back blankly, allowing Clarke to finish. "She won't stop until she has everyone."
The Flame in Luna's fingers is twirled for a second before she responds. "People I loved died today," she says. "Needlessly, at my hand. I can't let that happen again." A heavy weight is lifted of Harley's shoulders as she nods in agreement. Luna then turns, raising her goblet to give a speech to the waiting crowd. "As we prepare to give our brothers and sister to the sea, we honor their lives." She holds the goblet higher, her people following in suit. "Kom woda so gyon op, gon woda so kom daun." (From water we are born, to water we shall return.)
The words are repeated, even by Harley before she tilts her cup back and drinks the liquid inside. She isn't sure what it is, but it wasn't strong enough to be considered alcohol. She lowers the goblet again after swallowing the last drop. It hadn't tasted much like anything, Harley thought. She finishes out of respect, picking her head up, watching as Luna's face twisted into something hard that she couldn't place her finger on.
Clarke barely gives them time to continue the ceremony, as she steps forward after drinking her own share and speaking to Luna. "If we're gonna do this, we have to hurry. ALIE will send reinforcements," she said quickly. "And we have to find someplace private to perform the ascension."
"You believe that to defeat an enemy who will stop at nothing, you must stop at nothing," Luna spoke, her tone equally as hard as her features. "How is that different than blood must have blood?" The change of attitude Luna was having had Harley's forehead creasing, confused.
"Wait a second, Luna," Octavia interrupts with a slurred voice as she nearly tripped to get closer like she was dizzy. "You can't just..." The goblet Harley had tightened her clutch on from her own wave of dizziness falls along with Octavia, who hit the floor harder than the now smashed goblet.
A betrayed look crosses Harley's face as her blurry gaze connects with Luna. "L-Lu... Please..." She slurred herself, her legs wobbling before becoming too weak to hold herself up, the dotting vision causing her to fall over and land on her side. Harley's eyes fell shut, one last thought before becoming unconscious, knowing that Luna never wanted to become the commander.
