𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼. broken time turner

brylee nephele lupin was just a child, like the rest of them. but the future rested on her shoulders the moment she picked up the time turner in the department of mysteries. every step she took was being watched. every sound she made. every single thing she did.
the fates watched the girl dig into her suitcase in her room that night after drinking the littlest bit felix felicis that harry potter had left behind for their little merry band. they watched the girl stuff into her skirt pocket and rush out of the door upon hearing something—someone—yelling. they watched as she met up with the rest of her friends, luna lovegood, ginny weasley, neville longbottom, hermione granger and ron weasley. together the six of them patrolled the hogwarts corridors till late night, waiting for any sign of trouble.
the six of them patrolled as much of the school as they could, but six could only do so much in a school of six-seven floors. what they didn't know was that many to most members of the order of the phoenix were present that night in the school. ranging from the oldest kid to the brylee's own parents, they were all there that night.
a clock ticked somewhere close by and rang a time late at night. a scurry of something, a footstep through her off. there wasn't anyone else on the seventh floor with brylee, so what made the sound? she heard a cackle and hard stepping of heels and then the quiet slam of the door.
brylee held her breath. someone—or rather a group of someones—was there. and though brylee felt lucky from the felix felicis, she wasn't dumb enough to try and stop the intruders on her own. so she quickly turned the corner and pressed herself into the wall as she scurried to an empty classroom to send a message to the rest of the group patrolling the floors below. just as she was exiting the classroom, she bumps into two people she did not expect to see that night.
her parents.
remus lupin and maeve theo-lupin were a part of the order patrol that was responsible for watching over the school that night. the two of them were just surprised to see their eldest daughter roaming the school halls. they quickly conversed, exchanging the reasons they were all there that night when they heard the shattering of glass.
as most good parents would, remus and maeve tried to keep their daughter from going with them to see what was going on. but they knew that once she put her mind to something, brylee lupin was an unstoppable force to reckon with. so together, three out of the five members of their family ventured toward the great hall, where they'd first heard the sound, just below them.
»»————- ⏳ ————-««
the battle was over before it even began. dumbledore was dead. professor snape, well just snape now since he'd killed the headmaster of the school, was gone along with draco malfoy and several other death eaters who'd entered the school. many members of the order were injured, some less severe than others. brylee had gotten lucky to have scraped by without any major injuries. a couple cuts here and there but those would heal in time.
she headed towards the hospital wing, praying she wouldn't see anyone there with any major injuries. nothing life threatening, she hoped. but how the fates would soon prove her wrong.
just as brylee turned the corner, she was almost run over by ginny weasley, who looked like she was crying. brylee panicked seeing her best friend cry. who'd died? who was dying? ginny weasley's eyes met brylee's and a look of sympathy passed through them. it didn't take long for brylee to understand something that happened. something bad.
the fates watched as brylee frantically entered the hospital wing and rushed towards the bed her father, remus lupin, was hunched over. she could hear him sobbing, holding onto hand in front of him. as she got closer, she saw the worst thing she'd ever seen in her life.
her mother lay in a pool of blood on the red-stained sheet of the hospital bed. she looked limp and tired as if she were waiting for a line. something to pull her onto the lifeboat. brylee let out a sob and ran into remus's side. she wrapped her arms around his chest and sobbed into his side.
maeve theo-lupin was dying and there was nothing brylee could do to save her. the fates were ready to cut the maeve's string of life. for once, brylee was glad her little siblings weren't there. they didn't deserve to see their mother in pain and dying.
then something poked her thigh and with her blurry eyesight and shaky hands, she reached into her pocket. her hands touched something cold and she flinched, remembering what she'd put into her pocket just hours ago. with everything that had happened that night, brylee had completely forgotten about the time turner.
she ran, leaving remus behind to call out for her. but it didn't matter. in a few seconds she could save her mother's life. leaving her behind didn't matter right now. she'd see her again in just a minute and everything would be okay. maeve would be smiling again. she would hold brylee in her arms again and hug for and then berate for leaving her and remus during the fight. everything would be alright.
brylee locked herself in the bathroom stall and fished the time turner out of her pocket. she fiddled with it methodically, turning it to be just twenty minutes. that's all she needed to find her parents again. that's all she needed to save her mother.
brylee inhaled deeply before spinning the time turner and suddenly, everything was moving. the ground around her blurred as time turned. but something was wrong. it was going too fast, like someone had pushed the rewind button on the cassette player and the only sound that played was the broken, squeaky sound. it just didn't look right.
the bathroom stall disappeared as the brylee landed back in the hospital wing, maeve on the bed and remus crying over her. brylee attempted to rush towards them but was stuck. time had yet to have stopped. the scene around her changed again, this time landing in the department of mysteries. the dark room lit up with multiple spells being tossed around. brylee watched sirius black die for the second time. she let out a quiet sob as she stood by, unable to do anything to stop it.
the scene changed again. they were in the quidditch field stands this time, waiting for the triwizard champion to exit from the maze. but only harry potter returned alive, with cedric diggory's body by his side. then everything screeched to a halt before everyone stood up and started clapping.
the stands fell apart around her and brylee was back home as she watched herself open her hogwarts letter for the very first time with her siblings and her parents. if she hadn't figured it out before, she had now. something was extremely wrong. the time turner was supposed to take her back this far. just twenty minutes. but brylee had a feeling this wasn't the end.
and she was right, of course. the time turner in her hand heated up as it spun quicker and quicker. the everything around her was a blur. brylee almost dropped the time turner in panic but then realized that she would mostly have gotten stuck in that time, whatever time it was, wherever she was. she clung onto it even tighter.
there was a flash of green light and a rush of cold air around her. her head spun and her vision kept blacking out. she tried to focus on her surroundings. the passing by treetop, a mountain somewhere in the background. brylee figured out that she was falling through the air. just before she blacked out.
