brylee nephele lupin was not supposed to have that time turner. all the time turners were thought to have been destroyed the year before in the battle in the department of mysteries. nobody knew brylee had pocketed a time turner before the battle. nobody was ever supposed to know. she knew she wasn't supposed to use it.

but she did and it wasn't even a month after she'd first acquired it. it started with little five minutes jumps. messing around with her little siblings' stuff and then disappearing as if she'd never been there. then came the ten minute jumps back in time. brylee would get a little snack from the kitchens in hogwarts just before curfew. just something to munch on while she procrastinated homework.

that's when the first crack in the time turner happened. it was small, just smaller than her pinky fingernail. brylee noticed it. she'd be dumb not to. her house would probably have disowned her if she didn't. so she stopped using it. the time turner laid untouched in a pocket near the bottom of her suitcase throughout most of her fifth year.

then there was the second problem. the you-know-who problem was growing. it didn't stop after the battle at the department of mysteries. of course it didn't. war never stopped with a single death. but at least the ministry was somewhat addressing it now. and harry potter continued to be a large player into all of this. and with her father and best friend, ginny weasley, being close harry, so was brylee.

she heard everything that had been going on. the private lessons with dumbledore, who brylee did not trust in any way whatsoever, the whole thing with the cursed opal necklace, and even harry potter almost killing draco malfoy with a spell he'd seen in the corner of somebody's old potions textbook. it was all the biggest mess she'd ever seen.

then came the fateful night that everything changed. the battle of the astronomy tower, in which draco malfoy had let multiple death eaters into hogwarts, the most protected place in the wizarding world, ended in the death of the headmaster of hogwarts, albus dumbledore. it was the night she almost lost her mother.

bleeding and on the doors of death lay maeve theo-lupin in agony. a stray sectumsepra from the potions master of hogwarts had hit the woman and injured her severely. brylee knew she couldn't let her mother die but she also knew she shouldn't use the time turner. but the pain of the possibility of losing her mother took over and brylee turned time back.

it wasn't supposed to go wrong. it was just a little crack in the object and just a short period of time. but everything went wrong. brylee watched the last twenty minutes of her life flash by. then the last day. month. year. she watched the fire of life take birth. and before she knew it, time stopped.

and brylee nephele lupin fell of the sky, broken time turner in hand.
