mini series !!! PART 3

chapter two
stiles

we were at lydia's place. dealing with our current case; the dead pool. it had come out about a month ago, listing supernatural creatures all over beacon hills. sometimes even further. each person, depending on how powerful they were, had their own payment; what you would get for killing them. some we knew of, and some we didn't. and some we didn't even expect. my heart throbbed as i thought about it, about what's been spinning in my mind for weeks now, what i cant get out of my head.

her.

my girlfriends name on that list.

and her, as far as we knew, lack of supernatural abilities.

so why she was on the list... we didn't know.

"anybody got a new plan?" scott said, putting his head in his hands. we get together often, trying to think of an idea to keep her out of trouble, more than we've already tried.

"we still can't tell her, we still don't even know what she is yet!" scott said for about the tenth time this week, you could see the struggle going through scotts mind. everytime we got together we went through the same questions, solutions and scenarios ever possible to happen here. which wracked our brains. it was exhausting.

"we don't even know everyone who's doing the killings yet. we only know some but anyone could get a hold on that list. what if someone's at home... right now..." scott's eyes seemed to go dark for a moment, "and planning it. what if it's someone close to her who..." he hesitated, looking at the ground, "who's trying to kill her."

the breath got sucked out of me. just like anytime that i faced this reality. i rubbed my lips with my fingertips and buried my head with my hands.

we've done so much already. for our 3 year anniversary last week i got her a wreath, but not just any wreath. i got deaton to soak the leaves in mistletoe. and i had bought wolfsbane flowers for her front yard. i gave her a silver necklace, so no werewolf could ever touch her easily. i assured myself that it was enough, enough to save her.

but what if we could do more?

"there's only so much we can do." lydia said, shaking her head, "i still think we should tell her." lydia stood up straighter, expressing her unchanged opinion.

me and scott shared a glance.

we've run through this, again, many times. what would happen, what she'd do, what we'd do, how'd she react, if it would effect when the killer would attack if they found out that she knew... if it would effect our relationship. my brain hurt more.

"what if we just keep doing what we're doing and... she'll be fine, right?" mason said, shrugging.

"the mistletoe and other tricks won't last that long," cory spoke up, "and i don't think she wants a new wreath every month, she may get suspicious."

"she's already is suspicious!" i say, shaking my head shamefully.

scott tilted his head and squinted his eyes at me.

"what?"

i huff out a big breath, "she hasn't said anything, but everytime i tell her i have plans... she smiles and says ok. but i know she's smarter than that. i just know." i put my head back in my hands, i felt so bad for lying to my girlfriend. after everything we've been through, she doesn't deserve this. at all. "and we haven't hung out at all lately, because i just can't. i cant lie to her, and hanging out with her just fill my stomach with guilt. guilt that i'm lying. guilt that i'm not able to protect her properly." i shook my head, rubbing my eyes. the only reason we were at lydia's tonight was in case she stopped by the house tonight, which i'm scared she might do some day when she gets too suspicious.

there was a moment of silence.

i couldn't even speak anymore, i felt like there was nothing i could do that would guarantee her safety. like there was never going to be a solution to any of this.

a hand on my shoulder took me out of my dark thoughts, scott sincerely smiled down at me. i rested my elbows on the table, rested my chin in my hands, and wiped away the tears that had formed.

"we'll figure it out bud," scott said after a few minutes, "we won't let her get hurt." he nodded at me, i just looked blankly at the table in front of me, not wanting to talk or think about this anymore.

"come on stiles, let me drive you home." lydia smiles at me kindly as i nod.

"i'll come too." scott said, who came here with me and lydia anyway. we hopped in the car and drove off to my house first.

the first few minutes of the ride were silent. none of us having anything to say.

"look, stiles," lydia said, glancing over at me before fixing her attention on the road, "you can't worry too much. she's smart, if anything happens... she knows how to protect herself. " lydia looked back at scott in the back seat, he nodded.

"it's just," i spoke, rubbing my forehead with my hand out of nerves, "i don't know what to do. is there anything to save her? are we just supposed to wait until..." i glance back at scott, seeing him breaking as i say the words, "until something happens to her?"

"look sti, i know for one thing. even if she is supernatural or a super genius like you," she smiled at me, "she has always been able to defend herself. she can take care of herself just fine." there was a moment of silence, i found it hard to believe.

"and she may be no banshee," lydia chuckled softly, "but ever since the prank in 7th grade, that girl got a set of lungs." we all slightly laughed, remembering the memory.

we all decided to prank her. get her walking out of her house late at night just to scare her in the dark, she blasted all of our ears pretty bad. we laughed for so long that night. i remember her playfully hitting me and telling me she hated me while smiling.

i had loved her even back then. but she hadn't known quite yet.

scott broke me out of my new found happiness, "back when everything was okay." he faced his head to the ground, shaking it slightly.

"no werewolves, kitsunes, or screaming banshees to be hunted... or made." lydia took a deep breath, shrugged.

she took a right.

"lydia where are you going?" i sit up, suspiciously looking her direction.

"to your house!" she said, "relax! we'll get there." i relaxed in my seat, but didn't try to hide my suspicions look toward the banshee.

"another thing," i say, trying to get my mind off of the eventful night, "i've been dissing her lately. i need to spend more time with her." i shake my head.

lydia takes another right. what the...

"what are-" i say up again, but she cut me off.

"why don't you go out tomorrow? it's saturday so i'll schedule brunch for the both of you. my treat, but only for the two of you!" lydia squeals, excited for the occasion like she was going. i shook my head and smiled.

she took another right.

"lydia..." i say, waiting for her to interrupt or curse under her breath realizing she must've been lost.

"yeah?" lydia looked at me, doing a double take to the expression i was making. i glanced at scott, who sat more up right.

"that was your third right."

lydia furrows her eyebrows as she looked at the road.

she begins to turn right again, seeming to ignore the fact i just stated.

"lydia! did you not just hear me!?" i barked, getting annoyed.

"what did i do?!" she screamed at me like this was the first question i asked.

"you took four rights!" i say back blankly.

"which makes a complete circle." scott mutters.

"no i didn't!" she protested.

"lydia! you did!! your first turn was a right, which is the exact opposite way to my house, and then proceeded to take three more! which makes a circle!" i snapped at her, scott nervously glanced at the strawberry blonde girl.

"you never told me that." she nervously laughed.

"lydia, i did." i protested again.

"he did lydia-"

"just STOP!!" she screamed, just as ear ringing and glass breaking as always. i sucked in air and covered my ears with my hands. i felt the car squeal to a stop, and tensed my body up, expecting impact. none came.

i waited for the ringing to stop before i looked up again. lydia was practically hyperventilating in the drivers seat.

"what just happened?" scott slowly rose from his fetal position.

"i don't know. i'm sorry." lydia whimpered in her seat.

"it's okay. we're fine." i whispered, checking with scott, who nodded in return.

i thought about the past events. and scott must of seen the wheels turning in my head, because he tilted his head.

"what..."

"four right turns makes a circle right?" i asks the group, flicking my eyes between the two.

"yeah, which literally gets us nowhere though!" scott said, shrugging.

"but it leaves one thing to figure out." i says, look at lydia, "when your inner banshee comes out, you as yourself is distracted, but your powers take over to uncover or show something..." i ramble to her.

she raised her eyebrows, "your point?"

i blink, haunted by the thoughts passing through my mind, "is there something keeping you close to it? unable to turn away?"

scott's eyes lit up as he joined my wave length, "something in the middle of the circle."

-

"i'm sorry guys, i don't know what took over me." lydia said, trying to calm down as she drove inwards to this new found banshee-marked-area.

"it's okay, lydia." scott said, "you're still learning control, and you didnt have a mentor like me and liam did." lydia nodded, reassuring herself.

i just stay in my chair, knowing there was more. lydia is, yes, struggling with control. but i feared that there was something else. something more this event had to express. what's so important? is it bad? i don't even wanna go where the x lies...

as soon as we pull into the parking lot, we're all struck by horror but mostly confusion.

"no way." scott mutters, "how did we not notice from where we were?"

"why this place?" i whisper, opening my door and jumping out of the car. lydia just stayed there, you could see it in her eyes, she was desperate for answers too.

we walked up to deatons animal clinic, the one scott worked at. all confused once again when we all noticed that none of the lights were on. not like it was supposed to be open, but at least the outside lights should be on. we all slowly approached the entry side walk, the light from the moon providing little help. scott used his extra key to open the front door and flick on the outside lights. we all flinched and looked around as our surroundings illuminated.

a small object flickered in my side-eye vision as i slowly turned my head back to where scott was. i did a double take and the same flicker startled me. i walked over to the object, noticing it was a silver necklace.

with a diamond heart charm.

the same one i had given her.

my heart dropped and i swear for a second it actually stopped.

"hey bud, where are you-" scott showed up next to me, jaw dropping as he realized the object on the ground. i look up hopelessly as tears formed in my eyes.

"what is that??" lydia asked, tilting her head as she already knew the answer.

"it's the necklace," i say, "it's her necklace." i say it again, trying to process what this could mean.

there was a moment of silence.

lydia looked over at scott.

"what does this mean?" i whisper, looking at scott as i start to cry, "is she actually gone?"

scott shook his head, pressuring himself not to believe it, like something else must've had happened. but he knew deep inside, she would never take that off. then, his eyes lit up.

"lydia... you brought us here, but you didn't know why." scott stated, flicking his eyes to me.

"and we both sensed something..." i said it hesitantly. lydia's eyes lit up.

"i did it... because of this?" she whispered, staring at the necklace.

she looked at me, "i swear!" she said putting her hands up, "i didn't know anything about this."

"it's not that..." i said, starting to get worried, "its just... banshees don't predict disappearance, they predict..." i couldn't even say it, or even think about it-

"death," scott finished for me, "come on guys, let's go."
