chapter forty-two
even dead, i'm the hero

THE EASTERN ALPS were something to experience, even from behind a tinted travel bus window. If Peter wasn't so annoyed with Fury hijacking his high school summer vacation, he would've marvelled at the mountains that stretched out far into the distance━rocky fissures with miles of woodland that stretched far up through the clouds until they seemed to venture off past the atmosphere. Towns were scattered down the slope of the winding road; tucked in valleys and pastures underneath the shadow of vast fortresses of cliffs and jagged stone.

Driving towards it through the forest around the mountains, Peter couldn't help but scoff in reluctant amazement.

Everyone was pretty spread out on the bus. They had the room for it. Flash stretched his legs out across the front row━taking it all out to film his livestream that no one spent their time watching. Peter saw Brad not far behind him, gazing silently out of the window and trying very hard not to fall asleep. Mr. Harrington and Mr. Dell sat close by each other, as all teachers do━though neither seemed to care about what any of their students might spend their time with, too busy on their phones or peering outside. Ned and Betty were squeezed in together in the same row, chuckling and talking amongst each other━showing photos and videos of cute animals. Peter found himself alone in the back, watching Nina sit with MJ, casually watching the Alps pass them by with a pretty smile on her face while Michelle read her book.

Peter found himself upset. He had this whole plan surrounding Paris━and now, he was stuck on a road trip to Prague in order to fight some fire Elemental that could destroy the world. He knew that was what he had to do, and yet ... he glanced down, fiddling with the round box the jeweller had given him back in Venice. Inside, lied the necklace he gave a leg and an arm to buy for her. He opened it, sighing at the sight of a small glass mug dangling from a chain. It seemed cheesy━super cheesy, and yet he knew Nina would love it ... and yet he wouldn't be able to give it to her on top of the Eiffel Tower, tell her how he felt and━well━kiss her. He wanted that so much.

But he's soon realised that being Spider-Man meant he never quite got what he wanted.

"Yo, what's up, Flash Mob?!" he rolled his eyes as he heard Flash's voice carrying all the way up from the front row. "It's your boy, the Big F cruising through the Alps with my private driver, Dimitri. How you liking it, Dimitri?" he turned his camera onto Nick Fury's agent who side-eyed him, unblinking and nonchalant. Flash swallowed hard. "O━okay ..." he spun his phone back onto himself. "Anyway━!"

Peter glanced back down when he saw a message pop up on his phone from MJ.

mj: if flash doesn't shut up right now i will throw my book in his face.

Peter sort of wanted her to, but instead, he replied with: I need your help, I don't know what to do with Nina now we're not going to Paris! He added a few frantic emoji's to express his point.

He swore he heard MJ let out an exasperated sigh from a few seats in front. Who cares where you guys are? she answered. Just tell her and move on. Get over it.

Peter glanced up to find her scowling back at him. He replied with his best flat look. Soon, he smiled sarcastically to tell her, so helpful. She just replied with one of her own.

With another annoyed sigh, Peter slumped back in his chair and glumly tried to look for any romantic places to go in Prague━some high-top building he could swing to where no one would interrupt them. Though, he soon found out he wouldn't have much luck.

Soon, his eyes drifted away from his phone and to his open bag settled at his feet. There, the glasses case seemed to stare back at him━daring him to open them up again. Peter took a sharp breath through his nose. He came on this vacation in hopes to avoid Tony Stark: his ghost that kept following him around at every turn. Every breathless moment Peter thought of him in such present time until he remembered the Avengers Compound, and the look on his face ... he had lived a good life, they had said. He had made amends, they told him. People painted him in the streets and placed flowers on sidewalks. They posted his picture and mourned him in their homes. But he didn't haunt them like he haunted Peter Parker.

And these glasses; they seemed to be everything he stood for, every advice he gave, the very memory of the day he glanced down and told him: Nice job, kid.

Peter pursed his lips. He didn't want to look at them. He didn't want anything to do with them. He wanted to lock them away in the most secure vault away from this Earth ... and yet he still reached down and picked them up.

And it felt heavy. It felt like he was holding a thousand pound bag of stone.

With trembling fingers, he opened the case and his mouth went dry to see the pair of glasses so similar to the ones he wore himself. Peter swallowed the dryness of his mouth and picked them up. He carefully set them on his nose and peered through. They felt no differently than any other pair of glasses he wore. But at the same time they weighed him down. They felt strange. They didn't feel right on the bridge of his nose. They didn't feel like they were meant for him.

He grew teary eyed behind them. He blinked the tears away, taking another long breath through his nose and biting back the ache in his throat. He picked up the small card set in the case. He turned it over and read his writing; a moment frozen in time:

For the next Tony Stark
I trust you
PS: say E.D.I.T.H.
- TS

As soon as Peter said the name, the lenses lit up in waves of blue. He jumped in his seat, completely startled. He watched as the whole bus around him became as if he initiated Karen in his suit━he looked through a holographic screen right before his eyes. Tabs lifted up into view━an eye scan that swept through many faces until they found his own.

A light, female voice said: "Stand by for retinal and biometric scan. Retinal and biometric scan accepted."

Peter stared at his passport picture hovering through the lens. "H━Hello?"

"Hello, Peter," said the voice. "I am E.D.I.T.H., Tony Stark's augmented-reality security and defence system."

"Huh," Peter wasn't sure whether he was surprised, impressed, or expecting this sort of thing by now. "So ... he made you for me?"

"No. But you have access to all of Tony's protocols."

"Cool."

"Would you like to see what I can do?"

"Yeah," Peter shuffled back in his seat, careful to keep his voice down, "sure."

"E.D.I.T.H. stands for 'Even dead, I'm the hero'."

He couldn't help it. A sad chuckle burst through his lips and Peter shook his head, not surprised. He swallowed back more tears, nodding a little to himself. "Tony loved his acronyms," said E.D.I.T.H. and Peter pushed the lenses up his nose, sniffling a little.

"Yeah," he murmured, and for the first time, he didn't feel a severe sadness over Mr. Stark ... he felt something bittersweet; a breath of nostalgia. That even dead, he was still around. Still making his jokes, still standing tall above everyone else. Still being him. "Yeah, he did."

"I have access to the entire Stark Global Security network. Including multiple defence satellites, as well as back doors to all major telecommunication networks."

Peter's eyes widened at that. His breath hitched as tabs hovered above everyone in front of him. All of his classmates, both his teachers━even Dimitri! Blue, holographic message bars showed themselves for Peter to see; text's, search history, even photos. Whatever they were looking at on their phones, he could see. It was wrong, but Peter couldn't help but stare. He saw Jason's message to his mother: Hey Mom, Venice was crazy!!!!! Can you transfer me more money? He saw Mr. Dell researching the internet on the HISTORY OF WITCHCRAFT and Brad looking through romantic places in Prague as well. Peter scowled at him, watching him sift through the same websites he did.

It made him glance over to Nina, suddenly curious to see what she was doing. "Is━is Nina texting...?" the tab showed up next to her, and Peter frowned as he saw her start to type something into her search engine: Can dreams link to the Multiverse?

He shouldn't be watching her. He shouldn't be reading what she was typing━but he couldn't look away. Why was she searching that up? She was always trying to learn something new, sometimes some things quite random. But it was something so specific ... it didn't settle well in his stomach.

In the end, Peter had to force himself to look away, shaking his head to himself as he ducked further down into his seat━making sure he wouldn't be able to accidentally see anybody else's personal information. "No, no, don't read it, Peter━that's wrong. That's wrong..." he glanced sideways where Ned and Betty sat together.

Even though they sat together with matching hats, they were messaging each other on their phones.

Miss you, Ned sent his girlfriend.

Miss you more, Betty replied, grinning to herself.

Peter made a face, incredulous.

*ೃ༄

THE BUS took them to a small town in the valley; they drive past wooden homes painted black and white with fluorescent green window sills. Their stone foundations stood over old roads and cobblestone pathways. Peter watched a tour of bikers ride past in a group of at least ten. When the bus stopped, Peter stood to stretch his legs, E.D.I.T.H. back in her case in the bottom of his bag.

"Petrol and toilets━ten minutes!" announced Dimitri and Peter threw back his arms. He watched his classmates stand and leave the bus━Mr. Dell shoved past them all, rushing down the stairs in desperation to reach a rest room. Nina leaned back into her seat, frowning after him.

Flash jumped off the bottom step with his phone held up high, trying to keep signal as he recorded the town around them, "Flash Mob! This is what we're doing out here..." Brad followed, stretching back his arms in an oversized jumper, army shorts and boots━a really interesting combination.

Nina linked arms with MJ, dragging her towards the gas station in order to grab some snacks for the trip. Michelle rolled her eyes but soon mentioned something about getting a mix with fake teeth sweets so she could wear them and try and scare people. Jason, Zoha and Josh followed (not after pushing Zach almost onto the road to which he rushed to run after them towards the store). Tyler was quick to jab Yasmin in the sides and she gasped, surprised to which he laughed. She tried to kick him in the shins but he ducked out of the way. Betty and Ned stepped down hand-in-hand, gawping at the scenery of the woodland and mountains in the distance.

Mr. Harrington stopped by Dimitri amongst the chaos of his students to ask, "Dimitri, where exactly are we?" He didn't answer. Harrington pursed his lips. He fiddled with his map. "O━okay. That's━I'll figure it out..."

In the end, Peter was the last to step off the bus. As soon as he did, Dimitri swung an arm out, stopping him right in his path. Peter frowned. Without even looking at him, Dimitri pointed to the left where the doorway to what seemed to be a restaurant stood wide open. Inside, Peter glimpsed a figure dressed very similar━he could only guess they were working for Fury, too.

The woman disappeared into the building and Peter pursed his lips. He glanced at Dimitri, uncertain━though he soon realised he wasn't going to get any reassurance and instead marched forward towards the building.

Awkwardly, he stepped inside. He glanced around the hallway━a full three-hundred-and-sixty turn before he realised there was another door into a separate room. There, he found the woman standing by a bar, her arms crossed and a scowl upon her face. Peter was silent, hunched━he was a little afraid she might kill him.

"Uh, hello," he said, high-pitched. He sent the woman a small wave.

She continued to scowl at him. "Close the door."

Peter gaped stupidly. Then he jumped and did as she said, "Oh━O━okay."

"Um ..." once he did, he walked forward and extended out his hand for a shake. "I'm━I'm Peter Parker."

She didn't shake his hand. "Take off your clothes."

Peter stared at her. He wasn't sure whether he heard her right. "I━I'm sorry?"

"You told Fury Spider-Man cannot be seen in Europe," said the agent. "So I made you this━" she reached to the bar beside her and picked up a folded fabric of black. She held it out to Peter. He took it clumsily, "━another suit."

"Oh," he fiddled with it, peering at the lack of web designs━instead all he saw was black all over; a stealth suit. It was super cool. "Uh ... thank you. I━I'm sure it fits fine. I don't need to try━"

"Take off your clothes!" she snapped, getting annoyed.

Peter hunched up. "O━okay."

He looked around to see if there was a restroom he could use━even behind the bar if he crouched low enough. He felt very weird taking his clothes off in front of a stranger. Even if it was to try on another Spider-Man suit (and he was sure she didn't have an ounce of care about what he was doing).

Peter slowly took off his school bag, setting down onto the floor. He watched her steel gaze warily. "This ... it's a little embarrassing..." he started to reach for his pants zipper.

She rolled her eyes, "Now." She said. "Hurry up."

"This is weird..." Peter shuffled his pants down, trying very hard not to glance at her. He had managed to shimmy them down to his ankles without managing to show his Spider-Man underpants (don't even ask...) when the door suddenly opened.

"Oh, my God━!" shrieked Peter, scrambling to pull up his pants. He almost tripped over, rushing to stand in front of Fury's agent who reached for her gun. "No, no, no, no━!"

Brad stopped━his hand froze on the door handle mid-swing.

Peter swore to himself. (Of all the people who could see him without his pants on and in his Spider-Man underwear it had to be fucking Brad!).

There was a horrible, pregnant pause. The two of them stared at each other, anticipation the other's move. Peter wondered whether he could web Brad's head to the door to somehow knock him out so hard he'd forget what he just saw ... but he had no idea how he'd explain that to Mr. Dell and Mr. Harrington.

"Sorry," then said Brad. "I thought this was the bathroom."

Peter rushed out a frenzied, "This is not what it looks like!"

Slowly, Brad raised his phone. "Yeah..."

Peter's stared him down harder. "Don't you even━"

Brad's flash went off.

He snickered to himself before rushing out of the room. Peter threw his hands down, "Brad!" he shouted after his classmate. He tugged his jeans back on as he started to hop towards the door. Behind him, Fury's agent raised her gun. "OH, MY GOD━!" he waved his hands at her, exasperated. "Don't shoot anybody!"

She lowered her gun, startled at him but he didn't give her a second thought. Grabbing his new suit and shoving it into his bag, Peter ran out of the bar (still zipping up his flyer). "Brad?!" he called, starting to freak out. "Brad━! It's not what it looks like, buddy!"

Brad swung around. He walked backwards, watching Peter stumble back out into the open with an amused grin. "Look, Peter," he said━in such a mocking, supportive way it made Peter want to punch him (and not hold any strength back). "I'm not here to judge your life choices, dude. If you want to hook up with some random European chick on our school trip, that's on you."

"No!" said Peter, shaking his head. He was growing frantic. If anybody saw that picture, he'd be done for━he'd be shamed out of high-school! "That━that's not what that was, okay━"

"I can't pretend I didn't see what I just saw," Brad told him, stepping in closer. Peter took a deep breath, trying to keep down his anger. "I know you're trying to get back with Nina. It's obvious. But I like her, too."

Peter understood what he was threatening to do. His blood ran cold. He started to shake his head, "Wait a minute. Hey, hey━you cannot show her that photo, dude, come on."

Brad sighed, sympathetic in a way that wasn't sympathetic at all. "I'm sorry, man," he said. "I have to. She deserves to know the truth."

That made Peter livid. Before he could stop himself, he stormed up to Brad, chuckling lowly. "Oh, dude, don't act like you care about her━don't act the martyr. You're not doing this for Nina."

Brad guffawed at him. "And what you just did? Did you do that for Nina? You missed your chance, bro, when you broke up with her the first time. I'm not gonna lose that chance. Already you're just doing the same thing as you did before━letting her go."

"You don't know anything about what happened," Peter scoffed. "You don't know about what's going on between us."

Brad just gave him another pitiful look, "I think I know enough. You're never gonna make it up to her, man. You're just gonna keep disappointing her."

Peter would have shoved him right then and there if Mr. Dell hadn't called out: "Okay! Put your one foot in front of the other," as he stepped out of the service station with an ice-cream in hand, "and, everybody, back on the bus!"

Peter went to snap at Brad again, but he was off, jogging back towards the bus.

Back to where Nina was waiting, completely innocent to everything that has happened.

*ೃ༄

HE SAT AT the front of the bus now. Which was the worst place possible to try and do something about the picture Brad could send to Nina at any moment. After their small stop, the entire bus was filled with chatter. Peter kept glancing around his seat, searching for Brad amongst his classmates. He now sat at the back, already scrolling through his phone. Peter's heart hammered. He had to stop him━he had to stop him fast. If Nina saw that picture━it didn't matter if Peter could explain it, it didn't matter if she would understand; she might not. She might lose all trust in him━he might lose his chance to tell her everything. She couldn't see that photo.

Peter shrunk down in his seat. Hoping that Flash was too preoccupied with his phone, he took the chance to put Mr. Stark's glasses on. "E.D.I.T.H.?" he called in a soft whisper.

"Hello, Peter," she replied immediately. The bus around him flashed a holographic blue. "How can I help you?"

"Hey," he mumbled. "Um━there's this guy in my class who's who's kinda gonna ruin everything━"

He said all of this very fast and E.D.I.T.H. cut him off to say, "Peter, I'm having difficulty hearing you. Can you please speak up?"

His anxiety doubled. He couldn't have anyone hear him. He glanced around, breathless as precious time was wasted━Brad was on his phone; he was on his phone right now. "Uh━um━" Peter cleared his throat and spoke as loud and as clearly as he dared, "━Brad Davis. He has a photo of me."

"Brad Davis. Is he a target?"

Peter frowned at her choice of words. "Is Brad a target? Um ..." he glanced back around and saw the dreaded picture hover right beside him━he was preparing it to send; glancing over at Nina who was doing her best to throw a sweet up and catch it in her mouth. MJ rolled her eyes at it. Peter gritted his teeth and swung back around into his seat. "Yeah. Yeah. He's a target. He's definitely a target."

"Copy that. Target is Brad Davis━" in front of Peter's eyes through the lenses, Brad's photo materialised into view; as well as a satellite that zeroed right onto the road they were driving on Google Maps. The screen went bright red. "Initiating strike."

Peter's stomach slowly dropped as he realised. "Initiating what, now?"

"Intercept point determined," said E.D.I.T.H. "Releasing kill vehicle."

Oh no ...

"Wait, E.D.I.T.H.━"

The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. Peter sat up; he glanced around, and he knew he had messed up━bad━when he saw something fly toward them in the distance; a white drone with two, small, torpedo weapons aimed right for them.

His took off the glasses in his horror, "Oh, my God."

Then━suddenly━a hand reached out and swiped the glasses from his grip. "Dope glasses, Parker," grinned Flash Thompson. He perched them on the end of his nose, looking through them, quite impressed. "How'd you pay for these?"

Peter didn't have the time for this. He reached out his hand, shaking it urgently, "Flash━give them back."

He shook his head, trying to lower his agitated gestures, "No, no, no, no━"

"━Flash━!" Peter smacked his hand away, growing more and more frenzied (and frustrated) as the seconds passed by.

"━I'm actually paying you a compliment━"

"━Please give me the━"

Smack!

Peter froze. His eyes went wide. Flash slumped back in his seat against his bag━completely unconscious. Spider-Man hunched up. He didn't just do that━he didn't just do that ... He didn't even stop to think about his strength.

In a small squeak, Peter Parker rushed out: "I'm so sorry."

He grabbed the glasses from Flash's nose and scrambled them back on. "E.D.I.T.H. don't kill Brad!"

He could see the drone getting closer and closer━no one else had realised; they laughed and they shouted across the seats, none of them knowing that Peter had just ordered a drone that might just kill them all.

"Do you want me to cancel the drone strike on Brad Davis?"

Before he could answer, Zoha looked over and her eyes widened to see Flash passed out in his seat. She stared at him; shocked, "Did you just punch Flash?"

"What?" Peter gaped at her. "No━!"

"Firing," said E.D.I.T.H.

Oh, for the love of

"Zoha, look behind you━!" Peter cried out and like this was a movie (thank God that it worked), Zoha looked over her shoulder, eyes narrowed as she searched for a perpetuator. Just his luck━at that same time━Tyler had been prepared to chuck his rubbish over their heads and she immediately thought he had aimed for her.

"Are you serious?" she demanded of him.

With her's and everyone's attention on Tyler who stood there, frozen with his arm ready to throw, Peter swung out his hand towards the driver's seat. He pressed his fingers against his web-shooter and in a split-second, tugged the wheel back towards him.

Everyone on the bus toppled sideways like bowling pins━they screamed in alarm, latching onto their seats, the bars, even each other to stop themselves from falling into the aisles. Chips went flying. Phones flung across the seats. Tyler tripped backwards onto Brad and the two of them became a sprawled mess of arms and legs along the backseat. Nina's Spider Plush struck Ned in the face.

"Oh━LOOK OUT━!"

They missed the drone strike by inches━it shattered the left rearview mirror. Everyone screamed once again as Dimitri spun the wheel the other way━and Peter's classmates all toppled to the other side. All except Flash, who was soundly sleeping the entire ordeal away. The bus skidded along the edge of the mountain road.

"HEY!" shouted Mr. Dell, holding on for dear life, "THIS IS NOT THE AUTOBAHN!"

Peter scrambled to his feet, staring down the drone through the back window. "E.D.I.T.H.!" He quickly realised he didn't have the glasses on. He glanced around, cursing━until he found them settled against the steps. He rushed to grab them. Fiddling them back onto his nose, he heard: "Commencing second strike━"

"Peter!" Mr. Harrington snapped, clinging tight onto his seat. "Plant your fanny in that seat and buckle up, right now!"

Desperate and out of ideas, he gestured wildly to the mountain side, "Look at the baby mountain goats!"

"Oh━baby mountain goats?!"

Despite almost having fallen over the side of the mountain, Peter's teachers and classmates all scrambled over to try and capture the sight of a little, baby mountain goat. Peter took his chance.

He leapt up. Pushing open the emergency exit door on the roof, Spider-Man soared over the top of the moving bus━he pressed his fingers down onto his web shooters; aiming straight for the drone in front.

One splitter struck the boulder behind it━the web flung out and attached to the back. The second splitter web sprung out to each gun; it wrapped over the barrel━the drone spiralled; it spun; it sparked and trembled━them it exploded in a burst of fire and smoke.

Peter fell back down. He closed the hatch and landed perfectly where he had just been. His hair ruffled, his glasses askew━and yet just in time for his teachers and classmates to glance back over, very confused (and upset) that there had been no baby mountain goats in sight.

Mr. Harrington frowned, quite perplexed, "I don't see any mountain goats."

Peter breathed heavily, flushed at the cheeks. They were save━it was all over, and none of them even noticed. (He wondered how he even managed it). Panting, he pointed weakly to the rocks, "Y━you missed them."

Betty eyed him. She pursed her lips, suspicion on her tongue. "I know you think none of us have noticed, Peter..."

His breath hitched━he thought the worst. "W━what?"

She continued to eye him accusingly. Then, she smiled, "... But your new look, I love it."

He felt his entire body want to collapse with relief. He sighed, managing a light chuckle. Betty nudged Ned beside her who looked like he might've threw up a little in his mouth, "Right, babe?"

"Y━yeah!" he managed, clearing his throat. "Sophisticated; classy━uh━very European."

Peter fell back onto his seat. He closed his eyes, slumping with exhaustion. He took a moment to catch his breath. "Oh, man ... Let's ... let's try that again."

And when Brad finally managed to sit beside Nina, his phone back in his hand to search through all of his phones ... for some strange reason, he couldn't find it. Nina eyed him, trying very hard to hide her amusement as she watched him swipe through his photos again and again.

"Uh━this is so weird," he told her and she hummed, biting back a smirk. "It was right here on my phone. I━I━"

"Yeah," muttered Nina innocently, meeting his gaze, "weird, isn't it...? To take pictures of other people with their pants off?"

Brad gaped, eyes wide. Slowly, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

"And then show it to someone else?" Nina went on, still acting quite innocent. "Without that person's permission?"

He forced out a chuckle, trying to remedy the situation, "Uh━heh━that is not what I meant to do━I thought you deserved to know━"

"I'm really disappointed in you Brad," she said with mock sadness. Nina shook her head, as if this pained her very much (when she was fighting the urge to laugh), "I thought ... I really thought you were better than that."

Brad stammered. "I━uh━I━Peter was the one with that random blonde chick━"

Nina sighed, grabbing her bag and standing up from the seat. "Look, Brad━whatever you're into, I really don't care. But just don't let it harm others."

He flushed even brighter, watching her squeeze past him into the aisle. "I━I━I am not into taking pictures of other people━" she just shrugged, acting as if she didn't want to hear it, "━I━I'm not! I'm not weird like that!"

Nina just waved goodbye, making her way to the front of the aisle where Peter quickly darted back into his seat, having watched the whole conversation. She bit back a smile━somehow; she didn't know how he managed it, but she knew he had been the one to delete the photo from Brad's phone.

Without saying a word, she took the seat beside him at the front of the bus. She set down her bag and shuffled to get herself comfortable. Nina glanced over to meet his gaze, unsure and hesitant. But she just smiled, "Hi," she said shyly. She grabbed her bag of sweets and offered it to him, "You want some?"

Peter stared back at her from behind the glasses. Nina didn't tell him she thought they were too big on him. She didn't say that she thought they were Tony Stark's glasses, not Peter Parker's glasses. Instead, she smiled brighter and shook the little bag towards him. Soon, Peter smiled back and reached his hand in.

And for the rest of the trip to Prague, the two teenagers spent it in the comfortable, peaceful company of the other. And Spider-Man felt like he was Peter Parker. Peter Parker felt like Spider-Man. He felt like each part of him was where it was meant to be; he was both, and they were the same; they were him, just the one person. And he felt like he was a teenager, sitting with the girl he liked, on a school trip ... he felt normal and content within his crazy life. Everything felt normal with Nina Hart.
