Nia met eyes with vinnie and for some reason she wasn't in a panic. He was hot definitely, his hair was cloaked under a black hoody and his knees were bare but she wasn't phased. Maybe it was her gut reminding her that she hadn't spoken to ray in days.

Instead of being awkward, Vinnie pulled the short girl into a bear hug. It was weird for him too but something told him to hug her. She smelled sweet and she wore green and purple, the colors bounced off her light skin.

"Hiya." Vinnie greeted unusually, he wouldn't usually say that but he was at a lost for words. The girl was a stranger, and he only agreed because the spot felt empty without ray.

He imagined him meeting a different stranger. In the way where you meet someone in the supermarket and they make a funny joke but they're not cute. Fairytale ending was just a fantasy.

"Man you tik tok boys are shy." Nias voice was heavier than he thought it would be, it was childish like bubbly but sharp and confident.

"Umm we're not a species ya know." He commented as she smirked, "sure you're not." She rolled her eyes but then laughed immediately after, so it made the whole attitude of the gesture disappear.

they walked off into a small secluded part of the park where they sat, criss cross applesauce in the grass and listened to the trees. Nia looked like a flower in his eyes the way she was planted into the ground, confidently. She was so focused on vinnie that she finally spoke.

"So. How's it feel to be in love?"

"Not in love."

"That's what it seems like lover boy."

"I just like-" he was on date. "liked her."

"You still like her, even I love her so
I get it but Ray destroys good relationships
vinnie. That's not a path you wanna follow."

"I don't think it's that dramatic."

"It is." Nia folded to her side to admire Vinnie. He was cute but he wasn't hers. They played around in the grass and laughed with the birds.

But when he wasn't playing with her, he'd start gazing at the sky of colors melting together like swirling melted sherbet and how the silicone clouds got bigger and smaller, and how they kind of looked like her, like the girl that just couldn't admit they were having the perfect conversations how the sun kept hiding.

then he'd focus in on Nia, who didn't want to be put under his microscope but, would just laugh
about it behind her strawberries and act like them being together wasn't something wrong.

She didn't care either. She was just tired of being the sidekick, the leftovers. Her friend would burn the nice ones over and over again. And now it was vinnies turn. He'd end up the way all of them did, heartbroken.

She inched closer to him, he did the only thing that would quiet his thoughts. He pulled her face into his and they kissed. They thought if they held their breathe and kissed long the dullness of the action would spark something.

Nothing. Just felt like lips. Maybe he was exaggerating, kissing ray wouldn't be fireworks. It'd be lips. By when Nia pulled away she smiled. So she thought it was good?

"You a virgin at kissing too?" She asked, which he should've seen coming. She knew exactly how to mock him, but it never bothered him.

"Course not." Vinnie said pulling her into another dull kiss, this one faster and more passionate. Maybe they were both pretending to even feel each other.

Nia questioned if they even worked together, the fact that she didn't care. Had she been using vinnie? No. She broke free from the interrogation of her thoughts as a small dog rushed by them.

Vinnie groomed the blonde dog as it's owner chased after is, shyly staring at vinnie who pretended not to see her at all. Was it because he was on a date? Or because of ray? In reality he was just taking a liking to the dog, it was friendly, he didn't even notice the girl until she carried it away.

"Never seen a dog before?" Nia mocked to stop overthinking, Vinnie pulled his hoodie down with a sigh.

"I used to have a dog like that. I had to give her away when I moved here with my aunt, my mom said I couldn't afford to take her with me. Whatever the hell that means." Vinnie watched the dog play
and run around it's owner as Nia felt pity for
him. 

She gathered her basket of fruits and the blanket that only she layed on and hovered over him

"where are you going?
You're gonna ditch me aren't you?" Vinnie asked with a laugh and got up anyways.

Nia started to see Vinnie for who he was in that moment, he was smart funny and just looking to connect with people. She was a bully but he didn't mind, she liked that about him and reminded herself not to take advantage of him.

The two of them walked in silence finally reaching their destination. Her apartment.

"I think we should stay friends." He said and it was like the city simmered down. She looked into his eyes and took a deep breath.

"Well Vinnie if that's what you want. I'm not forcing this on you." Nia said with a laugh. She didn't know if she was hurt because she was allowed to be or just because she was.

"We feel right like we fit but I just... like even if I weren't infatuated with Ray I think we're forcing this.. don't you?" Vinnie asked he one person who didn't know how she felt about anything.

"Vinnie she's gonna break you." She said, "And it's not about that, but that's what's important. I like you, but you won't give us a chance and maybe I'm giving you like a million. For some reason I love offering myself up and nobody ever wants me. It's not your problem but for once I wanted someone to want me and I don't know if I want myself anymore." Nia ranted, bringing her keys out her pocket.

She wanted to put him back. She wanted to put Vinnie back, right where she found him.

So she walked into her lobby. Vinnie followed after, "Nia you're gonna find a guy that will love you for being a bully and being able to wear a miniskirt all in one but that's not me." Vinnie ordered as they walked to her doorstep, as friends.

But that speech kind of got Nia hoping to push her way out of the friend zone...

with regret, imagining if she
were in nias place

nia had fun with vinnie, insulting
him, playing with the random dog
that ran by them as they sat
in their small patch of green

She who didn't want to be compared
to her friend that she loved
And she didn't want to judged for
trying to love, Nia who always
looked for love in what seemed
like abandoned alleys and lost
and found bins

so nia would tackle vinnie, arms
pulling his nick, straddling him
so the topic wasn't her, so the way
she walked wasn't documented in
his mind, she just wanted to stay
his distraction

until ray figured out what she wanted

until Nia got the relationship that she wanted

until vinnie went for what he wanted and got it.

ray knew nia didn't want to hurt
her but it was bound to happen

nia didn't want to hurt ray but
she wanted to be someone's
person, it was bound to happen
and she found comport as well as
lust in vinnies company

vinnie just knew he wanted something
and soon, no matter how sweet, his
dreams didn't want to belong to him
but he still chased them regardless,
he was glad he put Nia in a friend zone
so he could focus on ray, he had faith in them.

so as soon as vinnie ended his date with
Nia, he texted Ray.
