VI. The Cereal Killer and Her Princess

"Hey, you're out of Cap'n Crunch," April said, shoving the last of the sugary cereal in her mouth.

When Flo had asked her best friend over, she didn't mean so she could come and eat the rest of her favorite cereal. But Julie was practicing with the boys for the school dance and she didn't want to bother them. She could tell the dance meant a lot to Julie and she was so happy for her. The girl was finally embracing her potential and sharing her talents with people again, and that's all Flora ever wanted for her. And she'd be there to support, although she had previously been planning on skipping the dance.

"You're lucky I love you," Flora said, glaring at her friend as she snatched the empty box of cereal and threw it in the recycling bin.

"And I love you enough to ditch my hot date and take you to the dance tonight instead." April laughed as she dodged the grape Flo threw at her.

"Arguably, you ditched your hot date for an even hotter date," Flora said before stuffing a handful of grapes in her mouth, her cheeks puffing out like a chipmunk.

"Yeah....real attractive." April looked at her friend in mild disgust as she tried to chew the grapes in her mouth, nearly choking more than once. "Well, I can't take you to the dance if you're gonna choke to death."

"Who's choking to death?"

Both girls snapped their attention to Carlos walking into the kitchen with a picture in his hand. They watched as he struggled to reach the cabinet before dragging over the chair and standing on top of it.

"Your sister. And uh...you know you could've just asked one of us to get something for you, right?"

Carlos waved away April's comment as he continued to look through the spices and various food items in the cabinet.

"Hey, where's the Cap'n Crunch?" Carlos looked at Flora who only pointed to April with a glare that didn't look very threatening with her cheeks still puffed out. "Okay, she can't come in the kitchen anymore. She always steals our food!" Carlos whined, grabbing the salt before hopping off the chair.

"Hey! I do not..." She trailed off as she noticed the two Molinas giving her a look, "...okay well not all the time. But you guys have good snacks! All we have at my house is fancy organic crap. I need my processed junk food!" She folded her arms and pouted before plopping down on a stool next to Flora.

"Hey, why do you need the salt?" Flora asked Carlos once she managed to swallow the grapes. She squinted her eyes at him suspiciously, not understanding what a twelve year old boy would need with a salt shaker.

"Oh, for the ghosts." He replied casually, going to leave the kitchen until both girls screamed out for him to stop.

"Woah, does he know?" April hastily whispered to her friend who shook her head.

"No. I mean, I don't think so. I didn't tell him." She whispered back before turning to the boy who was staring at them with confusion. "Carlos...what do you mean by ghosts?"

He walked back over to them and set down the photograph he was holding down in front of them.

"I think these orbs things are ghosts," He said pointing to the floating orbs that were in the garage in the picture. The girls shared a look of worry before focusing back on the boy. "I read on the internet that salt burns their souls."

"Well, what if they're good ghosts? You wouldn't wanna hurt them, would you?" Flora asked, slightly worried for her new ghost friends. A part of her knew the information he found on the internet was totally bogus, but there was always a chance it could work and the boys could get hurt....well, as hurt as ghosts could get.

"I'm not taking that chance. I gotta protect this family." Carlos said confidently as he took the picture back. "Don't worry, the kitchen feels safe." He gives them a salute before he makes his way out the kitchen and toward the garage.

"...Okay I know I should be concerned for the hot ghost dudes, but that was just adorable."

"Flora?! Flora!!! FLORA!"

April's eyes widened as she heard Julie and Flynn calling for her best friend. She was currently guarding the door to Flora's room as she was having one of her psychic drawing moments. The younger girls' footsteps were getting closer and April started to panic, knowing Flo would not want her sister and Flynn to see her in that state.

"Psst! Flora! Flo! Sis, you gotta hurry up!" She tried whisper yelling to her, but she knew it was no use. "Okay, um....I'll be back. Don't...move." She quickly ran out of the room and nearly ran into Julie and Flynn who were right outside.

"Is my sister in there? We really need her. There's a problem with the guys." Julie explained urgently, eyes wide with worry and panic.

"Woah woah, what's going on? Are they okay?"

"Yeah but...they're really angry, and I think they went to Trevor Wilson's house to-"

"Wait wait, hold the phone. Why would they wanna go to Carr-I mean...Trevor Wilson's house."

"It's hard to explain and we don't have time. Can you go get Flo, please?"

April looked back and forth between the girl's pleading face and Flora's closed door before sighing and shaking her head.

"Um, Flora is actually taking a nap. She said she wasn't feeling good so I told her to lay down. But I could go with you, though." She felt bad about leaving her friend alone, but it was either that or have Flora's secret exposed.

"Oh...okay yeah. That's fine." Julie wanted to ask about her sister, but also wanted to stop the boys before they did something dumb, so she shrugged it off. She grabbed the older girl's arm and dragged her down the stairs as the trio made their way out of the house to possibly save Trevor Wilson.

"Surprise, bitch."

April watched as Carrie's face morphed into a sneer once she opened the door. She thought it funny how cute she looked even when she was mad, with her face all scrunched up and her lips in a pout and-

"What are you doing here?" Carrie asked, making sure her words dripped with venom so her rival would know she wasn't welcome. It wasn't until Flynn cleared her throat that she noticed the two other girls. "Ugh, and you brought them? Why are you here? And...how'd you get over the security gate?"

April winced as she glanced at her ripped shirt from trying to jump over the barbed wire. When she agreed to go on this little mission with the other girls, she did not think her clothes would be suffering the consequences.

"Teamwork! Do you have a Band-Aid? The barbed wire's new." Julie said looking down at her scraped up hands.

"What do you want?" Carrie asked the girls impatiently, though she was only looking at April.

"Uh...just thought you should know that Julie's band is playing at the dance tonight," Flynn spoke up, thinking of an excuse on the fly.

"Now you know!"

"You guys are acting weirder than usual." Carrie looked at the girls with an eyebrow raised and looking unimpressed.

"Not weirder than that jacket with those shoes," April said, looking Carrie up and down with a smug grin. "What a...bold choice." April's smirk dropped briefly when both Flynn and Julie elbowed her in the side.

"Uhhh we're a little thirsty. Can we come in for a glass of water?"

"Ugh, fine. If it'll make you leave faster." She let the girls pass and gave April a glare which the girl responded to by sticking her tongue out. "Don't break anything."

"Wouldn't dream of it, princess."

Carrie left the girls standing by the door and April decided to follow her instead of going with Julie and Flynn.

"Ugh, stalker much?" Carrie glared at the other girl who followed her to the kitchen.

"It's not stalking if you let us into your house."

"Oh, you mean after you broke onto the property?" Carrie wasn't even looking at April as she filled two glasses with water.

"Well, it's not our fault your security sucks. You're lucky it was three harmless teenagers and not an experienced serial killer." She shrugged when Carrie shot her a disturbed look. She reached over and took one of the glasses of water without asking, causing Carrie to huff in annoyance, but she didn't say anything as she filled another glass.

April followed Carrie wordlessly as they made their way back to the den where Julie and Flynn were talking with Nick. She used to come to Carrie's house all the time when they were still at least civil with each other. Her favorite memory at Carrie Wilson's house was when the whole Dirty Candy crew had a sleepover. All the other girls had fallen asleep and April and Carrie were the last ones awake. They ended up staying up for hours just talking and laughing and bonding, but she wouldn't be surprised if Carrie had forgotten all about that.

"These girls bothering you, babe?"

"No," April spoke up, casually taking a sip when all eyes turned to her. Her eyes locked with Carrie's and she swore she could see the corners of her mouth turn up slightly.

"Uh...no, just telling us about the dance tonight," Nick responded to his girlfriend's question, eyeing April strangely.

"Right. Julie and her hologram band are playing. How'd you learn how to do all that hologram stuff anyways." Carrie handed the girls their water with a forced smile.

"The internet. It's not just full of makeup tips." April nearly choked on her water at Julie's subtle burn.

"Oh shit. Little Molina got jokes." She mumbled out, causing Carrie to shoot her a glare before sitting down next to her boyfriend.

"Uh...what do you...what do you say, babe?" Nick asked as he looked back and forth between his girlfriend and Julie, trying to diffuse the tension.

"Sure. Let's check out the hologram show."

"Great! Um...I'll make sure all my buddies are there."

"Oooh! How exciting! That's a lot of people staring at you." She sent Julie a smug grin, trying to get under her skin.

"Bitch," April mumbles under her breath, looking away casually when Carrie turns to her.

"You girls remember where the door is, right?" Carrie asked them with an eyebrow raised, though she was specifically looking at April.

"Yeah." Julie said right before she "accidentally" spilled some water on the floor. "Oh my gosh! I am so sorry." Carrie was about to get up when Julie frantically stopped her. "No no no! I know where the towels are." She handed her cup of water over to Flynn and left to go "look for towels".

Flynn tried distracting the two on the couch by talking about anything she could come up with. If Carrie was annoyed before, she was even more so now. April watched in amusement as Carrie got more and more annoyed with the girls' presence by the minute. Flynn was still talking when April saw Mr. Wilson rush down the stairs mumbling to himself.

"Oh hey, April." He spared the girl a quick glance and a barely-there smile before turning to his daughter. "I'm gonna see my therapist. Okay? Okay." And with that, he was gone and starting up his helicopter.

"What is a raccoon doing in my backyard?"

April furrowed her eyebrows at Flynn's choice of topic and the fact that she chose to squeeze in between Nick and Carrie on the couch, but understood once she turned and saw Julie trying to sneak outside.

"Hey, girl." April sat down on the couch next to Carrie with a smirk and tried putting her arm around her but the girl swatted her arm away.

"Don't 'hey, girl' me," Carrie whispered harshly back, crossing her arm switch a huff.

"Oh c'mon, princess. Remember when we used to be "friends"?"

"You were never my friend. I only tolerated you." Carrie snapped, still keeping her voice low.

"Ouch." April put a hand over her heart in mock hurt. "Well, you know, I never hated you," she admitted, avoiding making eye contact with Carrie when she looked at her. "Sure, I was mad when you kicked me out of the group, but I got over it. It's not like it affected my popularity or anything."

"It...I didn't do it to make you less popular. It wasn't even about you, actually. Well, not directly, at least.." Carrie admitted after being quiet for a minute, thinking over what to say before she responded.

"Wait, really? Then...why?" April was confused. If it wasn't about her and Carrie's rivalry, then what was it about?

"I.....I think I did it because I-"

Carrie was cut off by Julie coming back inside, without any towels.

"Hey, sorry I took so long. Couldn't find the towels."

Instantly, Carrie's expression changed into a sneer as she angrily got up with her hands on her hips.

"Whatever. I'll get it myself. You can leave now." Her eyes flickered down to April. "All of you."

The girls all made their way to the door, sparing Nick a wave on their way out of the den. Carrie was about to slam the door closed when April stopped it with her foot at the last second.

"Oh, almost forgot. See you at the dance, princess."

"Flora, do you have anything in your closet that doesn't make you look like Florence Welch?"

".....No."

When the girls had made it back to the house, April immediately rushed up the stairs to Flora's room. When the psychic girl was done drawing, she had started freaking out until she checked her messages to see a text from April explaining her absence. She wasn't exactly sure what her drawing meant. It was a picture of a sign for some place called the "Hollywood Ghost Club". Considering she knew three ghosts, she figured it had something to do with them.

"I knew I should've taken you shopping," April mumbled from the back of Flora's closet. The dancer was looking through Flora's closet to find something for the girl to wear to the dance. A cute shirt in the back caught her eye and she reached to grab it when she nearly tripped over something on the floor. She was able to make out the outline of a painting canvas in the dim lighting and picked it up to inspect it. "Hey, Flora? What's this?" She asked, still looking down at the gory image on the canvas as she walked out of the closet.

"Don't look at that!" Flora lept up from her spot on the bed to grab the painting roughly from her friend's hands.

April looked at her friend in confusion and concern as she pushed past her and made her way to the back of the closet, putting the painting back where it belonged.

"Um...okay. Sorry?" She recognized that she obviously did something wrong, but she wasn't sure what and Flora didn't seem like she was going to explain.

"No...no it's okay. Sorry for freaking out." Flora let out a deep sigh. A part of her knew she should give her best friend an explanation, but another part of her wasn't ready. To distract from the tense silence, Flora picked up a random shirt and pair of pants and showed it to April.

"How about this one?"

April forced herself to move on from the strange incident that occurred by inspecting the yellow crop top and purple bell bottoms.

"Um...an interesting choice..." She trailed off as she saw the slight glare Flora was giving her, "Okay okay, fine. I think it looks great. Is that what you wanted me to say?"

"Yup!" She motioned for April to turn around as she started changing into her outfit.

April had left her outfit for the dance at the Molina house so that she and Flora could get ready together. She took this stuff very seriously. She intended to show up at the dance looking like the hottest bitch there, and she wanted Flora to look just as amazing. Well...almost as amazing. The Molina girl couldn't do her own makeup for shit, besides lipgloss and some eyeshadow.

She went over to Flora's full-length mirror, looking at herself in her thigh-length sequined green dress. She didn't care how vain it sounded, she could stare at herself all day. She put a lot of work into looking hot, might as well enjoy it.

"You done yet?" She asked while combing her fingers through her pin-straight hair and putting it up into a ponytail.

"Yup, how do I look?"

The dancer turned to her friend and let out a shocked gasp. Flora did a little twirl, smiling from ear to ear.

"Okay, I wasn't sure about it at first but damn you look good, girl!"

Flora responded with a quiet "thank you" and moved over to the mirror next to April. She smiled when she saw her outfit and did a bunch of silly poses that caused both girls to burst out laughing.

"Okay okay let's get serious.....MAKEUP TIME!!!"

"Flora...it's a dance...that means you have to dance."

As soon as the two girls arrived, Flora went straight to the food table and has been there ever since. April kept getting pulled away by other people, but would find a way to escape and return to her best friend's side.

"But I don't wanna," Flora responded around a mouthful of a cookie. For some reason she thought it was a good idea to shove the whole thing in her mouth, not having learned her lesson from nearly choking on grapes earlier.

"Why did you bring a flower to a dance?"

She looked down at the flower April was pointing to in her hand. She had finally settled on a white chrysanthemum for Luke and brought it to give to him before the performance tonight. She felt bad that it took her so long to pick one for him, but he was a little harder to read. Plus, she didn't hang out with him as much as Reggie or even Alex.

"It's for Luke," she explained simply. April looked like she wanted to ask more but then she spotted Julie.

"Oh good, here comes your sister. Maybe she can knock some sense into you and get you to dance." April tries waving at Julie, but the younger girl didn't see her through the large crowd. "Ugh, or not." She let out a defeated sigh and shrugged her shoulders.

"Leave her alone. She's gotta get ready for the performance," Flo says, going to grab another cookie when April slaps her hand away. "Ow! What the heck, my dude."

"Enough hiding in the corner! As your best friend and hot date, you owe me at least one dance." She didn't give Flora time to protest as she grabbed the girl's arms and dragged her to the center of the dance floor.

At first, Flora just stood in place, staring nervously at the crowd of people around her uncomfortably. A group of girls had gathered around April and Flora stood awkwardly to the side since she didn't know any of them. April was in her own little world, dancing like she owned the dance floor. Flora wished she could look that carefree and just let loose.

She had begun to sway to the music when she felt someone accidentally bump into her, causing her to yelp in surprise.

"Oh, my bad. I'm so-"

Flora didn't wait to hear the rest of the apology as she rushed to get away from the large crowd and back to the side.

"Flynn!" She waved her arms, catching the girl's attention. "Where did Julie go?" She followed her eyes to the wings where Fynn pointed and sent the girl a thankful smile before making her way to her sister.

"Oh, hey Flo," Julie said, looking up at her sister from her spot on the floor.

"Uh, is there a reason you're on the floor? And where are the guys?" She looked around and frowned when she didn't see the ghost boys.

"I don't know," Jules responded, slightly disappointed. "Do you think they forgot?"

"No, I'm sure they're just running late for...some reason. They'll be here."

But as the hours passed and the crowd got increasingly more restless, she began to doubt her statement. She knew she should've been mad since this gig meant a lot to her sister, but she was also concerned. Her mind went back to the drawing she had done earlier, of the sign for the "Hollywood Ghost Club". She wasn't sure what the club was exactly, but it had "ghost" in the title, so it was possible the ghost boys were there.

"I can only stall for so long. It's eleven o'clock," Flynn told the two Molina sisters. "I think you should just play by yourself. I mean, holograms or no holograms, you'll be amazing."

"You saw me the other day. I can't play without them. They'll be here. They have to," Julie responded stubbornly. Flora would've agreed with her, but something in her gut told her they wouldn't be coming. Something told her they were in trouble.

Flora looked up to see Nick approaching and got up to give the two some space. She left the stage and scanned through the crowd for her best friend. She spotted her still in the center of the crowd, looking as carefree as ever.

"April!" She had to yell for her friend to hear her over the music. Luckily she heard her and started moving in between the people to get to Flora.

"Flo! I thought you'd left!"

"Yeah, sorry about that. I wanted to go check on Julie."

"Oh yeah. Wasn't she supposed to perform, like, two hours ago?" she asked, grimacing when Flora nodded her head sadly.

"Yeah....the guys aren't here. I...I have a bad feeling."
