IV. The Language of Flowers

"Carlos, get your stinky feet off of me."

Flora and Carlos were chilling on her bed, listening to Hip Hop music, Flora sketching in her notebook bobbing her head to Childish Gambino when Carlos put his feet on her lap. He grumbled when she pushed his feet away, but quickly let it go and started rapping along with Donald Glover.

Their love of Rap and Hip Hop music was pretty much the only thing the two had in common, but they bonded because of it. Pretty much the only music genre they couldn't see eye to eye on was Country. Flora fucking loves Country.

"Oh, we're not moving, by the way. Julie changed her mind." Carlos looked up briefly from the video on his tablet to see Flora's reaction.

"Oh thank god." She let out a sigh of relief.

For months she's been wanting to tell Dad how much she was against the idea of them moving, but kept quiet. It would've been the selfish thing to do. If Julie didn't feel comfortable living in the house anymore, Flo just had to suck it up and deal with it.

"It was hard enough for me to make one friend here, I couldn't imagine moving somewhere else in the middle of my senior year."

"Dang, can't relate. I'm super popular." Carlos laughed when he felt his sister kick him in the leg, sticking his tongue out at her teasingly.

"Whatever, weirdo."

A few minutes went by without them talking, the only sounds coming from Flora's pencil scratching on her paper, the video from Carlos' tablet, and the music from Flo's phone. Carlos glanced up at the girl to see her brows furrowed and tongue sticking out a bit in concentration.

"Whatcha drawing?" He asked nosily. He shuffled around so that he was sitting side by side with Flo, looking down at her art. "Woah. That's pretty cool."

It was, indeed, pretty cool. It was a drawing of April, in her ballet attire, leaping gracefully into the air. The girl's birthday was coming up, and Flo had been thinking about what she could get her best friend before realizing she could just paint it instead.

"Thanks! It's for April's birthday. This is just a sketch, though. I'm gonna paint it on canvas later."

"She's gonna love it." His eyes moved from her sketchbook to the dozens of paintings lying around her room. "Are you actually gonna show us this one?"

Flora detected the slightly salty tone in her brother's voice and thought it was completely understandable. Carlos was pretty young when she'd stopped showing her art like she used to. She was fine showing them the stuff she did for class or just for fun, but even that was rare. Her psychic art stayed permanently in her room, collecting dust.

"Yes, Carlos. You can see it when I'm done."

"Good. I like your paintings."

She smiled at his compliment, looking down to see him smiling as well. His smile quickly turned into a scowl as she ruffled up his hair, causing him to whine and shove her hand away.

"Thanks, lil man."

Flora walked into the garage with a watering can, moving towards the bathroom to fill it up. While the garage was mostly used as Julie and her mom's studio, it was also where Flora kept her plants. Taking care of them became a nice distraction for her when she realized she had psychic powers she couldn't control.

Leaving the bathroom, she nearly dropped the watering can in fright when she saw Alex and Reggie chilling on the couch, completely forgetting about their existence when she had walked in.

"Jesus Christ!!! I will never get used to that."

"We were wondering when you'd notice us," Alex said with a laugh, twirling his drumsticks around in his fingers. "Why are you here, by the way?"

"Uhhh this is my garage, not the other way around, buddy." She rolled her eyes, moving towards her plants by the window. This was supposed to be her quiet relaxing time, but the two ghost boys present were making things very difficult for her.

"Hey, where's Luke?" she asked, taking her attention away from her plants for a second to look at the boys.

"Oh, he's in your kitchen."

"But...he can't eat???" Flo looked at Alex with her eyebrows furrowed.

"Yeah...we tried telling him that. It's just hard, you know? Not being able to do the things we used to."

Flo put down her watering can, turning to the boys with a sad expression on her face. The boys weren't all bad, and she was actually glad she got to meet them, but becoming a ghost seemed almost like a cruel form of torture. Not being able to do the things that once brought you so much joy. The boys were lucky they could still play their instruments. Without their music, their afterlife would've been a lot more miserable.

"I-I can't imagine." She looked down, stroking the soft petals of one of her flowers. It was her mother's favorite: a dahlia. Flowers not only brought the girl great amounts of comfort and joy, but it was probably the only thing she and her mother had in common.

"Hey, Alex, Reggie. What flowers do you like? You can each have one if you want."

This immediately caught the boys' attention and they sprung up from their seats, running over to look at the many flowers in front of them.

"Oooohhh there's so many! I don't know what any of them are called, though." Reggie looked at all the pretty flowers with wide eyes before landing on a bright red rose. "That one! That's a rose, right?"

She nodded her head and used her shears to cut the stem in half, holding the rose up for Reggie.

"Here. It suits you." His smile got brighter as he looked from the flower to the girl who sent a smile of her own right back.

"Thanks, Flo." It took him a couple of tries to grab hold of the flower, but when he did he smiled triumphantly, turning around excitedly to Alex to show off his rose.

"What about you, Alex?"

Alex paused to survey the selection before pointing at a flower in the back. "That one. What's it called?"

She looked to where he was pointing to see the pink geraniums had caught his attention. She smiled before clipping the stem and handing him the flower.

"A geranium. It's one of my favorites. It represents True Friendship."

Alex smiles softly down at the flower in her hand before gently taking it. "Wow, um thanks, Flora."

"Wait! What does mine mean?!" Reggie looked expectantly at her as she laughed at his eagerness.

"Uhhh well, i-it means Love. Like...like the romantic kind." She looks away from him when she says this, blushing slightly.

"O-oh." He clears his throat awkwardly, also not making eye contact. "Uh that's...that's cool."

"Ugh, get a room," Alex mumbles as he retreats back to the couch, sniffing his flower.

"So...which one is your favorite?"

Reggie's question was surprisingly difficult to answer. For years she's said the dahlia. But she only said that because she was almost desperate for a connection to her mom. In reality, the dahlia was never her favorite.

She clipped the flower closest to her, bringing it up for Reggie to see. He stared in awe at the delicate soft purple flower in her hand.

"It's a begonia. It means......well it means Warning of Misfortune, Caution, Dark Thoughts, blah blah blah."

Reggie looked at her horrified. "Well jeez. That's...sad. Why is it your favorite?"

"It's...hard to explain. But I guess just because I feel connected to it, in a way."

Reggie hummed, eyes flickering from the flower to her before grabbing the flower with ease and carefully sticking it in her curls. He stepped back to appreciate his handy work and sent her a thumbs up.

"Wh-what was that for?"

"You looked sad, and I wanted to see you smile," he said with a casual shrug.

Without realizing it, a smile had crept onto her face because of his actions. It was a simple, probably friendly gesture, but it immediately brightened her mood. Not even Alex making gagging noises over on the couch could stop her from smiling.

"Seriously, guys. Get. A. Room."

"Julie, hurry up!!! The Miyamotos are outside waiting outside!"

Flora was waiting impatiently by the front door, waiting for her sister to come downstairs. April's dads had generously agreed to give the girls and Carlos a ride to school, but Julie was taking her sweet time getting ready.

"I know! Just-" Julie came barreling down the stairs looking flustered and frantic. "I'm not ready! The song has to be perfect. Just go without me! I'll make dad take me later."

"Wait. What song? What the hell are you talking about?"

"Oh, the guys didn't tell you? Luke gave me one of their songs to help me get back in the music program."

"But...didn't you already ask your teacher if you could rejoin?"

"Well...yeah. But she said no." Julie looked at her sister with a confused expression when a look of shock crossed Flo's face. "Didn't I tell you?"

"Uh, no. No, you didn't."

She didn't have time to be mad at her sister as she heard the car outside honk. She gave Julie one last look before calling for Carlos, who was actually ready and waiting just like she was.

"Well, good luck. Hope you get in."

And with that, Carlos and Flo left the house, Flora closing the door with a little more force than she intended.

Flora and April sat next to each other in the bleachers, Flo putting her headphones on when Dirty Candy was announced to perform. It's not that she didn't like their music, although it wasn't necessarily her favorite. But between the screaming crowd and the loud music, her eardrums felt like someone was stabbing them. She wasn't a huge fan of screaming crowds, leading her to be left alone at home whenever her family went to concerts. It wasn't so much the music as it was the crazy fans shrieking at the top of their lungs.

As the colorful girl group got in position and the music started, she looked to her friend who was sporting a deep scowl. April's eyes were practically burning holes in Carrie Wilson's head, and the lead singer must've noticed because she sent the girl a sarcastic wink and wave.

"Ugh. This bitch." Ape scoffed, her scowl becoming more prominent as she crossed her arms. "I can't believe she kicked me out. She just couldn't handle the fact that I'm a better dancer. Whatever, her loss." April tossed her hair over her shoulder with a smug grin.

Although her words were muffled from the headphones, Flo was able to decipher what she was saying by reading her lips.

"Oh yeah. A total yellow hyacinth." Ape turned to her friend with a confused expression. "Oh. It symbolizes Jealousy." Ape made an 'o' shape with her mouth and turned back to watch the performance.

Out of the corner of her eye, Flo saw her sister and Flynn enter the gym. A few seconds later the boys appeared, causing both sisters to jump a little.

"The...um...ghost boys are here." She whispered to Ape who got excited at her words.

"Oh, for real?" She flattened her hair and wiped nonexistent dirt off her clothes. "How do I look?"

"Why does it matter? You can't even see them, idiot."

"Duh. But they can see me, dumbass."

As she saw Dirty Candy finish their song and walk away, April motioned to her friend it was safe to take off the headphones, as the students were no longer screaming. The girls got up with everyone else and were about to make their way out of the gym when they heard the first few notes to a song. April excitedly pointed over to the stage, where Julie was timidly playing the piano and singing for the slowly growing crowd.

When the chorus came, the boys instantly appeared on the stage with their instruments, playing as backup for Julie. Flo put her headphones on as people started screaming again and made her way closer to the stage with April who was bouncing on her feet and cheering on the younger girl.

It took looking at the boys' surprised faces and studying the crowd for her to realize that they could all see the ghosts. She made eye contact with the band on stage, looking as bewildered as them.

"Omg! You weren't kidding. They're so cute!"

But Flora couldn't hear her. She was too distracted to read her lips as she watched her sister come alive on stage. She couldn't take her eyes away from the energetic girl. The old Julie was back and better than ever.

"Oooohhh that one over there just winked at you!"

April shook Flora's arm while pointing at the leather jacket wearing bass player. Flora's eyes shifted from her sister to Reggie who gave her a goofy grin when they made eye contact. When he looked away, she stared at him for a couple seconds longer, watching how he performed. His energy was so infectious, she could feel it all the way from the back where she was standing.

"Oh, that's Reggie. The one in my drawing."

"That's why he looks so familiar! Girl, you have got to introduce me to them later."

"Did you forget the part where you can't see them or....." She shook her head as April scoffed and waved her hand dismissively, "Okay."

Flo attention turned back to the stage just in time to see Julie belt out the last notes of the song. She clapped excitedly, waving to her when they locked eyes. When Julie and the band stood up from their bows, the boys disappeared, causing the crowd to gasp and look around in confusion. She would've been confused too if she didn't see the boys reappear again a few feet away. The boys also seemed to be in shock about what happened and why they were invisible again, as proved by Reggie shaking his butt in front of an oblivious crowd.

Julie explained to the crowd that the ghosts were actually "holograms", which Flora was very grateful for considering she'd have come up with a terrible lie if she were the one up on stage.

The crowd started to disperse and though Flora wanted to stick around to congratulate her sister, she had to talk with her Art teacher about the upcoming Art Showcase. She settled for sending Julie a thumbs up and a smile before leaving the gym with April.

"Pssst! Flora! Flora are you there?! Can I come in?!"

Back at home, Flo was doing her homework with music playing quietly in the background when she heard a voice speak up. She looked around the room, trying to find the source when she noticed a hand waving through her door. Rolling her eyes, she called for him to come in.

"Oh, cool. Didn't know if you'd let me in here after last time." Reggie smiled and jumped on her bed, laying back and getting comfortable.

"Well, you actually asked this time instead of invading my privacy."

He hummed and looked around her room which her dad described as a "beautiful clutter". It was a mess in the best way possible. Potted plants were laying all over the place, some hanging from the ceiling, random pieces of art and posters were on the walls, and the area where she painted was covered in almost every color imaginable.

"So, did you like our show?" She looked away from her work to see him wiggle his eyebrows at her.

"Yeah, that was...something. It was so weird how everyone could see you guys."

"Weird? It was awesome! Boy, it sure felt good to play in front of a crowd again." He stared up at her curling with a content smile on his face, putting his arms behind his head.

"Well, I should thank you. Because of you guys, Julie had the confidence to perform again."

"Well, we tried getting her to join our band, but she said no. She's upset about Flynn," he said with a pout.

"Flynn? What's wrong with Flynn?"

"Oh, she knows Julie lied to her."

"I'm sure Flynn would understand if Julie told her the truth. I told my best friend and she was totally okay with ...it......" She trailed off as her mind went blank.

Out of nowhere, Flora felt her body go numb, like she was drifting away. Almost like she was on autopilot, she got off the bed and grabbed her sketchbook and pencil on her desk. Her hand moved across the once blank page where the beginnings of a face could be made out. Reggie's alarmed and concerned words fell on her deaf ears as he realized something was wrong. To him, she looked like she was possessed, and considering ghosts were real, he thought it was a very real possibility.

He watched with wide eyes as she came to her senses, dropping her pencil and sketchbook and letting them fall to the floor. Reggie growled in frustration as he tried to steady her as she stumbled on her feet, but his hands kept going through her.

"Flora, a-are you okay?" He watched as she nodded her head and gripped onto her chair so hard her knuckles turned white. "What...what was that?"

He was sacred, she could tell. His voice was wavering and one glance at him told her that he was a nervous mess. She gave him a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

"It's...a long story. H-how long was I out for?"

"I don't know. A while, I think." He gestured to the alarm clock on her nightstand. Her eyes widened as she realized about 30 minutes had passed.

"Shit." She sighed and ran a hand down her face.

He gave her a once-over to make sure she was okay before looking down at the dropped sketchbook. Crouching down, his eyes scanned the picture and all its details. He grew confused as he identified the face in the picture.

"You...you drew yourself?"

His words caused her to snap her attention down to the picture. She let out a quiet gasp as she crouched down next to him and studied her own face displayed on the paper.

She was crying. She couldn't quite make out where she was, but she could tell she was crying. She had on a nice dress, not too fancy, and had even put makeup on, though it was ruined from the tears.

"I-I don't understand. I never draw myself." She felt like she had said similar things lately. She'd never drawn people before her mother and then later Reggie, she'd never drawn something from the past before the hotdog....

"Flora, please tell me what's going on."

She was about to tell him 'no' when she looked at his pleading eyes, desperate to understand and help her, and she just cracked.

"Okay...I'll tell you. But this stays between us. Promise?" She watched as he nodded his head with determination and a seriousness she hasn't previously seen on the boy.

"Promise."

A/N: hey yall wassup. i edited this chapter like 5 times and i'm still not 100% satisfied with it but c'est la vie i suppose. also, Flora and Reggie will kind of have a relationship similar to Julie and Luke's (but without the underage actress oof) so there's gonna be some flirting and whatnot, but not a full blown romantic relationship. anyways, hope you enjoyed! please leave a comment or a like to let me know how you feel!
