chapter two || 🍓🤍🌸
August sprinted out of the front door as her best friend pulled into the driveway. She hadn't seen Belly since last Christmas and hadn't spoken to her in a few weeks as the two girls were too busy with school and packing and just life in general.
Jeremiah pushed past her, resulting in her kicking the back of his knee, "What's up!" His voice cracked as her foot made contact with his knee.
Laurie, August's third and last mother, was smiling at them, "Hi, Oh, my God '' She was cut off by Jeremiah hugging her.
God how she had missed Laurel.
August stood awkwardly waiting to hug her as Susannah flung her arms around Laurel. They all said 'hi' and 'how are you' which resulted in August getting bored, so she walked up to Belly and scrunched up her nose as Belly tackled her.
The two girls swayed in each other's arms until Belly pulled away and smiled at the girl, "I've missed you so much, you have no idea."
"Oh, trust me, I have an idea. Also, when did you get so hot?" She asked a little too loudly. Belly Giggled and ducked her head.
Jeremiah once again pushed past her. If she could kill him and get away with it she would. She scoffed and walked over to Laurie.
"Hello, my favourite March sister." She joked. When August was finally able to read 'little woman' she had declared Laurie as a March sister.
"Hello, August." Laurie said, smiling before pulling the girl into a long hug. August really appreciated Laurie more than she'd ever admit
When something was going on at home she would call the woman and suddenly all her problems were gone. If something was going on at school that she couldn't tell her mom about, she would call Laurie. Even though she knew Laurel would tell her mom out of concern, some things are better coming from adults than a seventeen year old girl.
A few seconds later she pulled away from her and smiled weakly at her, "What's going on?" Laurie asked.
August put on her brightest fakest smile, "Can we talk later?"
"We sure can, honey." She squished her cheeks, before turning back around to Diana and Suanna.
She groaned and walked over to Steven. "Hey."
He grinned over at her, "Hey, Aug."
She gave him a quick hug before him, Jer and Jayden went back to talking about whatever nonsense they were talking about before she interrupted.
She didn't notice anyone else had walked into the garden until Steven spoke up, "Hey, hey, guys, guys. I mean, I don't know about you, but I... I think it's time." August groaned, while he checked his make believe watch, she knew exactly what was about to happen, "For a belly flop..."
Belly's eyes widened before she tried to run away, but she knew it was a lost cause. Steven grabbed her but she escaped and made it over to the fence with all the boys chasing her. August followed closely behind while they all grabbed belly and dragged her to the pool.
They chanted, "Belly flop" over and over again until they made it by the side of the pool and they started to count to three, "One, two, three!"
She was thrown in the water with a loud yell as the boys laughed. August laughed and closed her eyes for two seconds, two fucking seconds when suddenly she was grabbed.
She thrashed around on the person's arms. She couldn't even get a good look at them because she was thrown into the pool.
She submerged in the cold water, staying there for a second. She then rose to the top and sat out whatever water she had swallowed. Her nose and throat began to burn from the sudden contact with chlorine.
She pushed her hair back out of her face, just in time to see Belly pull Conrad into the pool.
August's eyes bulged as she tried her best to swim as far away as she could, but she couldn't. There was a weight on her body and she was being dragged underneath the water again.
She swam away from the boy, pushing him by his shoulders and glaring at him and pulled herself from the pool. She sat on the side for a minute, watching with a smile as Belly and Conrad fought.
August waited until Belly swam across to her after all the boys had left and pulled herself out and sat beside her.
"That was...fun, I guess." August mumbled, standing up and pulling the girl with her.
"That was not fun, that was the opposite to fun, actually." Belly frowned as she let herself be dragged into the house.
"Whatever you say."
They left a trail of water behind them as they walked up to the kitchen island to see Susannah cutting up fruit and Diana, not so secretly robbing the fruit.
They both said, "Hi" at the same time.
"You're dripping water all over the place," Laurie huffed, going to get two towles.
Diana laughed at the two girls who were dripping water whenever they moved, "Laur. She is gorgeous." Susanna whispered, pointing at Belly.
Laurie whispered back, "I know."
"You have always been lovely, but, oh honey look at you." She gushed holding onto the girl.
"I think I look pretty much the same." She brushed off the compliment as August reached out for the cereal.
"You do not look the same at all. You're growing up." She said, hugging Belly, which August thought was weird since Belly literally looked like a drowned rat. "You're in bloom."
August looked over at her mother with a concerned look on her face making Diana shrug.
Laurie walked into the kitchen and handed August a towel to which she thanked her for.
"Laur, she's you all over." Susannah said, going back to cutting the fruit and slapping Diana's hand away.
Laurie laughed and Belly replied, "People always say I look like my dad."
"Same." August chuckled under her breath, continuing to eat the cereal.
That was somewhat of the truth. People said she looked like both her mother and father. In her eyes she looked like her mom more than her dad, but she would've liked to look more like her dad.
"No, when your mom and I first met, she looked just like you." Susanna declared, while Diana turned her head.
"Yeah, but she didn't have boobs." She said as Laurie also said, "Except I had no boobs at all."
August griminced and Belly looked disgusted, "Gross, mom."
Laurie flung the towel on her daughter before walking towards the table, "You should call your father and tell him we got in safe."
"Uh, why don't you tell Steven to do it?" Belly asked.
Laurie grabbed the cereal from August as she walked by making the girl look like she was going to cry, "Because I'm telling you to do it. He misses you guys when you're gone."
"Yeah, but he'll see us at the end of summer."
"He'll be here for the fourth."
"Wait, he's coming here?" She asked, scrunching up her face.
"Of course, he always comes on the fourth," Laurie replied, turning back around.
"He didn't come last year?"
"Because we'd just gotten divorced. We're good now."
Before anyone said something else, August leaned over to her mother and asked, "Got anything stronger?"
August thought it was funny, but Diana didn't and that's why all she got was a glare.
"Where's Mr Fisher?" Belly asked Susanna.
"Oh, he's in London." August knew something was up by the way Susanna turned around and didn't look her in the eye, "They got him going back and forth. He'll join us later in the summer. For now, it's just the women and the children, just the way we like it."
Belly laughed and began to stand up. She said goodbyes before walking out of the room and heading up into her room.
August once again lay her head down on the kitchen counter and thought to herself. Finally home.
Half an hour later and August was curled up, back in her own house, on the sofa. She turned on reruns of Gilmore girls. For August, the first day was pure relaxation, well that was until night fell and she would politely excuse herself from the movie night all the girls had and sneak off to the party that was held on the beach.
She changed into a pair of shorts and a hoodie. She had robbed the hoodie three years ago and never figured out who it was, so she just didn't care. It was very comfortable and it was baggy so she could be comfortable.
She was eating strawberries and yelling at season four Rory Gilmore. If she could strangle the girl through the television she would.
"Don't be such a bitch!" She yelled as the front door opened. "Hey, Jay!"
"Hey..." He replied, sitting down beside her and taking a strawberry she had offered him, "Thank you. Look, are you going to this party later? 'cause, like, you've been sneaking off to do it for three years and I just wanted to know because Jeremiah said there were really hot girls going to be there and I would rather not be embarrassed."
"Will you calm yourself?" She laughed, "I'm going with Olivia. And plus when have I ever embarrassed you at a party?"
"Last year, the winter formal, that halloween party-" He felt a pillow collide with his face.
"Okay, okay, okay. Under the oath that is being a twin, I, August Madden promise, you, Jayden Madden, that I won't embarrass you tonight so you can get laid." She declared dramatically, with her hand on her heart.
He smiled, "Okay then, we're sorted."
"I hate you."
"I hate you, too."
Dinner was something August was dreading. The first dinner was always the worst because everyone had something to catch someone up on and it was just pure chaos.
Steven sat on his phone, showing Jeremiah something and Laurie's patience was gone. She had asked him to put the phone away several times to which he had said he would and then never did.
"Steven, I swear to god, If you look at the phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket." She threatened him.
"It's just we wanna see all your beautiful faces." Susanna explained.
"Can dinner be a screen free zone? You know, like the olden days?" Laurie asked the kids.
Steven was still on his phone and August couldn't wait to see what was about to happen. She leaned to her brother who was sitting beside her and asked, "You got any popcorn?" She got a laugh in return, but she never got her popcorn which she was slightly sad about.
"Steven?" Jeremiah said. He then grabbed guys phone and threw it away.
Augusts jaw was on the floor because, like, that the actual fuck just happned.
"Dude, are you kidding me?" Steven asked, watching his phone be thrown away.
When the phone landed in the basket, Jeremiah yelled, "Boom! Nailed it!"
Steven was now pissed off, "Okay, okay we get it, you've been working out"
"Really? You've been working out?" August asked, this dinner was getting far too boring. Jeremiah nodded his head, "Damn, can't tell."
Everyone let out a breath, "Damn, bro you got roasted by a girl."
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" August asked her brother.
She watched as his face contorted with confusion until he finally got it, "No- I didn't- I didn't mean it like that!" She raised an eyebrow at the stuttering boy, resulting in her mother kicking her from under the table.
Steven very quickly changed the subject, "When are you wishing for training camp, man?" He asked Conrad.
Never in August's seventeen years of knowing the boy has she seen a smile be wiped from his face that fast, "Uh, he quit football."
August was shocked, "Did you really?" She asked.
"Uh, yeah." Conrad replied before the table went silent.
"Are you kidding me, man? I'd kill to play college football." Steven said, looking between him and Susanna.
Susannah spoke up with authority laced in her words, "He can always change his mind!"
"I'm not gonna change my mind..." He said back to her as if he was so sure. "I was just going to sit on the bench the all season anyway."
That had to be a lie. August has seen him play a couple of times and while she didn't know much, she knew he didn't fuck around when it came to football.
Laurie turned to look at him, "Well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you going to do all summer?"
He shrugged his shoulders until Steven once again spoke up, "Oh, dude, you can work at the club."
The twins seemed to cringe at the thought of Conrad working at the club by the look on their faces.
"Yeah, with me and Jer!"He smiled, "We're also trying to get Jay to come—"
"No way in hell is that ever happening."
"I'm not going to work at the club." Conrad responded, looking at the two boys.
"Wait, you guys are working this summer?" Belly asked her brother and Jeremiah.
Jeremiah was the first to answer, but then again he always was when it came to belly, "Yeah, i'm lifeguarding."
If August thought Conrad working at the club was bad, she thought she had a heart attack think about Jer lifeguarding. In a "someones gonna lose their life" kinda way.
"And Steven is working at the snack shop"
Susanna stood up and walked over somewhere while saying, "Oh, belly, I almost forgot. I have a surprise for you," She handed Belly a letter which made Diana smirk at her daughter.
fuck, August thought to herself, now she really would have to do it.
August excused herself from the table politely, saying something about using the restroom.
She had been dreading this year ever since her mother told her about the ball. She had also found out Diana had put her name down already so there was no way in hell she could pass on it.
She just really wished for this dinner to be over already.
