hyejin was born as seol hyun-a on february 27, 1997 as the 3rd child in a family of six. her name was changed to hyejin when she was 2, and there wasn't much of a reason. her mother just liked hyejin better than hyun-a. 

she has an interesting family history. her great-great grandfather, seol in-woo, founded lg group in 1947. the company has stayed in the family ever since. her great grandfather took over, then her grandfather did. after the passing of her grandfather in 2018, her father took over the company. before that, her father was a managing director of the management group team of lg group. her mother is also a popular celebrity chef, with several restaurants all around south korea. because of that, her family was always very wealthy. her father wanted it to stay that way, so he insisted on his children marrying into rich families and inheriting the family business. on the other hand, her mother didn't care about what her children did, as long as they were happy. 

that was just one of the things her parents didn't agree on, they hardly agreed on anything. to say the least, seol sanghoon is very bigoted. sanghoon was born into an elite family, and his side of the family is very classist. they only hang out with rich people, and they think that underprivileged people are 'useless and feed off of our taxes.' however, hyejin's mother, im mi-sook, is an absolute sweetheart. mi-sook was born into poverty, so she understands what it's like to not have much. mi-sook's mother taught her to cook when she was young, and when she was in high school, she got a job at a restaurant to help pay the bills. when people started to realize her talent, they pushed for her to open her own restaurant. while she was in college, she was able to make enough money to open a restaurant. so, she opened nobilis in 1991, which is a restaurant that specializes in korean food and hosts a lot of big events. the restaurant quickly became popular. she met sanghoon at an lg event she was catering for, and they ended up getting along. so he asked her out, and not long after they started dating. they got married in 1992, and then they had junghoon in 1993. they had hyerim in 1995,  hyejin in 1997 and hyewon in 2005.

as a child, hyejin was a pretty quiet child. her nose was always in a book, and she only had a few friends. when she was nine years old in '06, she came across the song "teardrops on my guitar" by taylor swift. even though she didn't understand english, she fell in love with the song. she listened to more of taylor swift's songs, and some more western pop songs too. that's when she decided what she wanted to be when she grew up; a pop star.

her plan was to move to america (preferably new york) and become a world-famous pop star. whenever she had free-time, it was dedicated to practicing her singing. the following year, girls' generation debuted, and hyejin's older sister hyerim introduced her to them. she loved the song, music video and the group, especially taeyeon. then, she had a change of plans. instead of moving to america and becoming a pop star, she would stay in korea and become a kpop idol. the plan seemed perfect, she could chase her dreams and be able to stay in her home country with her family and friends. however, her father disagreed. he wanted to have a job that was guaranteed to bring her wealth and success. her mom was all for it. she seen the happiness that singing and dancing brought to her daughter, and that's all it took to convince her. with some help from her mother and brother, she was finally able to convince her dad to let her audition.

hyejin auditioned for four companies; bighit entertainment, yg entertainment, sm entertainment and cube entertainment and wasn't accepted by any of them, which would soon be a decision that they would regret. she was eventually accepted by jyp entertainment in 2008 after auditioning with "into the new world" by girls' generation. she trained with many 2nd generation idols, and they knew her as the company's little sister. 

she was supposed to debut with miss a, but plans were changed due to her age and she had to wait a little longer to debut. the majority of her trainee friends went on to debut, and left hyejin behind. she was also a part of figure8*, a girl group under jype consisting of twice's jihyo, nayeon, jeongyeon, sana, minyoung, lena (ahn celena) and her current bandmate, violet (now known as cloud9's lena). however, that group disbanded before debut. 

she felt discouraged, and considered quitting. hyejin had no choice but to continue training and hope for a different chance, as she had already devoted seven years to pursuing this career and could not change her path. she participated in jype's survival show, sixteen. she was quite popular on the show and many viewers loved her vocals, but she was eliminated in the final episode. she was on the verge of quitting again. until she became friends with trainees shin seo-yeon and shin siyeon (now known as estelle and amelia), who helped her decide to continue training. when times got hard, they promised each other that if training didn't work out, the three of them would quit and start their own bakery. 

due to the success of jype's first survival show and the group that stemmed from it, jyp decided to make another survival show; reaching cloud9. hyejin decided to participate, but this was her final chance. if she didn't debut, then she would quit training and choose another career path. when it was announced that she was participating in reaching cloud9, most people were shocked that she was still training. viewers adored her for her amazing leadership, vocals, patience and determination. finally, she made it! she ranked #6 on reaching cloud9 and debuted in jype's new girl group cloud9.
