TRIGGER WARNINGS: physical ab*se, d!vorces, c*ncer

ashley elizabeth sun/sun ha-rin was born into a family of 3 (at the time of her birth) in houston, texas. she had a typical middle-class family, and was raised by both of her parents. not much to add about her younger years, other then the fact that she was a gymnast since she was 4. it was a sport she admired and continued to do for the majority of their childhood. after her birth, there were 2 more siblings after her, making them a family of 6. 

however, things started to take a turn for the worse when she was 10. her father, sun young-jin, started cheating on her mother, kim eunkyung with another woman. the man also started to get abusive towards her mother. in private or in front of the kids, he didn't care. he even got abusive towards the kids, for things as simple as accidently spilling a glass of water. 

eunkyung put on a smile for her kids, but ashley could tell something was off. once the mistress found out that young-jin was married, she told eun-kyung. ashley's parents ended up getting divorced in 2008, leaving her mom to raise 5 kids on her own. that wasn't ideal for eunkyung, but she didn't want to raise her kids in a toxic environment with two people who hated eachother. 

the poor child was completely distraught. everyone told her "look on the bright side" and "you have two houses, two bedrooms, twice the amount of toys, two holidays" and all the cliche things you can imagine, which only upset her more. she didn't want two bedrooms or two houses, all she needed was one. the only thing ashley wanted was to be a happy family together, and she felt as if no one understood her. ashley hated their dad for ruining that, and for the stress he caused on her mom. eunkyung worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, and things were tough for them, but they made it through. 

around ashley's 12th birthday in 2010, eunkyung decided to get back into dating, and that's when she met gregory rodrigez. the two clicked instantly. a few months after dating, they decided to introduce their families to eachother. greg was in a previous marriage as well, but lost his wife due to cancer. he had 3 kids of his own, and they were close in age to eunkyung's kids. luckily, their kids got along great too. ashley quickly became best friends with his daughter, magnolia. they were 2 months apart and shared many of the same interests. after 2 years, the two girls developed a sister-like bond. lucky for them, because they were going to be sisters. 

all 7 kids were ecstatic over the news of their parents being married. however there were some challenges to overcome. eunkyung and her kids are korean, greg and his kids are mexican. because of that, there were a few cultural differences. but they were able to overcome this differences easily. the family of 9 soon became a family of 11 with the addition of 2 younger siblings. they were a happy family, which is what ashley wanted. they were supportive too, and accepted ashley when they came out as pansexual. 

the family lived a happy life in houston until ashley's grandmother's health started to decline in the summer of 2013. because of that, they temporarily moved to busan to take care of her. right before their move, summer broke her leg during a gymnastics competition. because of that, she had to take a long break from the sport. ashley was heartbroken. she made so much progress during her gymnastics career, and was already a level 7 gymnast heading into level 8. so during their stay in korea, ashley was at a low point in her life. from the injury, to her grandma's health and adjusting to the new country, it seemed as if nothing was going their way.

until one night when ashley caught her brother, ethan, sneaking out. they didn't know where he was going, but she knew that she could use some excitement, so she begged her brother to take her. ashley also told ethan that she would tattle if he didn't let her go. he ended up giving in, and took her to one of his shows, since he was an underground rapper at the time. 

she was in awe, and she knew that she wants to do that too. she begged her brother to teach her, and he agreed. rapping was originally something that ashley did to take their mind off of gymnastics, but it quickly grew into one of their passions. one summer when she was heading back home from gymnastics practice, she saw a birthday ad for the kpop idol hyun-a.

when she got home, she found out about 4minute and hyuna. she became an avid listener of both, and fell in love with kpop in general. ashley then decided that she wanted to become a trainee. however, there was one problem. she would have to leave everything in houston behind. her school, her friends, her gymnastics team, everything and everyone she's ever loved. it was a hard decision, but she ended up deciding to stay in korea. to her surprise, her family decided to stay with her as well until she got settled in. they were very grateful for that.

ashley auditioned at cube entertainment, jyp entertainment and starship entertainment. they got accepted at jyp entertainment on february 11, 2015, after auditioning with "bang!" by afterschool. she already knew the korean language and culture, so it wasn't very hard to make friends and to adjust. however, seoul is very different than houston, so she struggled with homesickness. however, she was able to make friends with similar experiences, like stray kids' bang chan & felix, jeon somi and cloud9's lena, who would later become one of her bandmates.

on december 17, 2015, it was announced that ashley would appear on produce 101 representing jyp entertainment. she had a solo audition, and she performed bubble pop by hyuna. she had a good run on the show, and she was popular amongst netizens, but she finished in 12th place and didn't debut in ioi.

however, ashley's journey wasn't over yet. on july 29, 2016, jyp entertainment announced that they would have another survival show thanks to the success of their previous show, sixteen. over the next few days, they revealed the 27 contestants of the show, ashley being one of them. many people were excited, because they've been following her since produce 101. her boombayah cover on episode one propelled her to fame and netizens fell in love with her charisma and rapping skills. thanks to the support of her fans, ashley got 4th place and debuted in cloud9 under the stage name "summer."
