In 1899 a couple of scientists, Killian and Fabianna Fane, had started inviting patients suffering from diphtheria to their manor after hearing that there have been strange reactions to the newfound antibiotic. The goal was to question the side effect of pyocyanase and when they prove it's ineffectiveness— to get recognized for their own antibiotic.

The patients would first complain about hearing ringing which moved from one ear to another. Then they would start bleeding from their ears, though when asked about any pain, they denied it. About three months into containment the subjects reportedly started hallucinating. At that point there was no way it was caused by the antibiotic, there must have been something other at play too, so the researchers became more careful, trying to find what they have missed. The battle for the antibiotic had been given up on when Fabianna noticed a sudden increase of energy and strength in some patients. They grew more curious, to question these new symptoms the two scientists started running test of physical durability on their guests. Surprisingly, they all showed extraordinary results. Not superhuman for sure, but for people thought to be sick great results.

Seeing as the physical tests haven't been of much help to help determine what was happening, they resorted to psychological tests to which they haven't had access to until now. The patients all showed signs of paranoia, but when asked about their hallucinations each one gave a different answer. One reported hearing other people's voices in their head, the other seeing shadowy figures which could pass through walls. It took 4 months until Killian and Fabianna figured those hallucinations were perhaps something more, abilities.
They realized that when the subject with auditory hallucinations answered a question they heard in their head, thinking Killian had asked it, when he in fact didn't, not yet at least.

In 1903 manor was turned into V.I.S. research facility, where they invited by letter every 'crazy' person they heard rumours of, and that was the beginning of what is now known as V.I.S. Academy for gifted individuals.

It is currently the year 2056, it has been found that abilities manifest out of pure chance, a specific combination of genes dictates whether or not the child will be gifted. About 1 in 10 000 people show signs of superhuman abilities, making it not so rare anymore.
V.I.S. Academy is one of the top research facilities, as well as schools, it's name now holding much power despite it not being the only institute for gifted. There's no tuition, as the school is funded by government, so kids from various backgrounds end up at the Academy. You cannot apply to the Academy, the school itself has to send you a letter inviting you to study there.

The Academy takes in 15 students per grade on average, their youngest students being 14 years old (with exceptions for particularly strong and dangerous abilities, the youngest ever taken in was a 6 years old mind controller) and their oldest 20. After finishing the academy students will have no trouble finding jobs as they are promised one the day they are accepted. According to their skills and ability, their mentors find them a job fit for them. It's always a well-paid one and almost always has to do something with either the academy itself or government established institutions. Mindreaders and alike end up in the criminal justice system, people with physical strength end up as bodyguards, and so on.

The sole purpose of the academy is to contain and have control of possibly dangerous ability users, so it's needless to say their policies are rather strict and the students are held on a tight leash. Their most valued principle is discipline, as well as three more incorporated into the Academy's name.

The three letters combined give the latin word vis, meaning power.

The students are taught various subjects, the usual ones, as well as ability-related ones. They are assigned a mentor at the start of their education whose role is to guide them through taking control of their power.

Aside from classrooms and laboratories, the school also has a library, a garden, an auditorium, a room with instruments, two sport fields, an inside pool, and during winter they put up a skating rink outside. All of those can be used in students' free time without any supervision from the professors.
They make sure their students' skills are versatile.

The rule book of the school states :

— The students stay in the academy's dormitories during the school year. They can leave the school grounds only on the weekends, they must inform their mentors of their whereabouts.

— Uniforms are mandatory and must be worn during class, but in their free time, students are allowed to wear what they want.

— All sneaking around past 12 am is strictly forbidden.

— All students must check in at the medical laboratory every 3 weeks to get their blood drawn and physical tests done.

— Any use of abilities which could be harmful to anyone is strictly forbidden. The punishment is a week of isolation.

— Any improper behavior will be met with 3 days of isolation or more, depending on the severity.

— Students are allowed to stay in their dormitories over the winter and summer holidays if they wish so.

— Any harm done to school's property will have to be paid for.
