June's leg hopped nervously as she listened to Helena preach. She wasn't sure why the church had such an effect on her. It wasn't like there was an actual priest preaching, and Helena seemed to be just as uneasy as she was. Still, her nerves got the best of her as her mind raced.
"You okay?" Elle whispered, eyeing the girl's knee with concern.
"Yeah, fine," June forced a smile onto her lips and slapped her hand down onto her leg, forcing it to calm. Elle kept her eye focused on the girl's leg for a few moments longer, as if she didn't believe her, before finally conceding and tuning back in to Helena's sermon.
June began to realize that the thought of her mom is what made her so uncomfortable in the church. Her parents had never been super religious, but they did believe in God, and they did try to go to church when they could. And, if it were all real, and her mom was up in some kind of heaven, that most likely meant she wouldn't ever see her again. Simply because who she was, and what she couldn't control.
As Helena stammered up at the front, looking to the room as she paused, June found herself calming slightly. Helena wasn't preaching for the purpose of shaming people or yelling about sins, but rather to instill hope in people. Her message was meant to be positive and filled with light when they needed it, and that made June feel better.
From behind her, she heard the heavy church doors open and then close, and looked back over her shoulder to see Cassandra coming in. The girl looked uneasy, almost as uneasy as June, as she stood in the book of the room with her back against the wall. June shot the girl a small smile when they made eye contact before turning back around to face the front.
Her eye was caught by Elle's phone screen lighting up beside her. She wasn't someone to invade other's privacy, and didn't really care much about whatever notification she was getting, but her attention was still pulled in that direction when she read 'Campbell' in her periphery. He had sent her four texts, and instead of opening or responding to them the girl quickly locked her phone.
Suddenly, a pit was in June's stomach as she wondered what was she even doing there? She followed a most likely straight girl into a church, nearly giving herself a panic attack, and for what? Her leg began to hop nervously again, and as a boy on her right stood and left she was tempted to follow. But, then she'd have to squeeze passed Elle and the girl might question her, so instead she just silently suffered through it.
She found herself wondering what the beautiful blond ballerina saw in the crazed boy. Just days before he had pointed a gun in Cassandra's chest in that same church Elle and she wasn't responding, but she knew better. The girl was outcasted and lonely, and if asking June, a girl she doesn't even know, to hang out said anything, it was clear she was desperate for company. And June couldn't really fault her for that, seeing as everyone copes differently.
Not long after, Cassandra left and the guard arrived. Helena seemed to relax at the sight of Luke, and her sermon actually ended on somewhat of a good note for June. Elle stood and seemed to pause, as if waiting to see if anyone would try to talk to her, before both girls exited the church. They were silent for a few moments, before Elle decided to speak.
"So... What did you think?"
"It was... okay," June offered, trying her best to sound optimistic. "I respect what Helena was trying to do, and I mean I think she did have a good message, I just think that's not the kind of thing that makes me feel better."
Elle simply nodded and looked away, focusing her eyes on her feet as they walked. June felt a weird sense of guilt for what she had said, and she wasn't sure why. She didn't want Elle to think she hated it or she felt dragged along, it just simply wasn't her thing. Everyone had different modes of coping, and church definitely wasn't June's.
"I just feel like, going to church, it reminds me of my mom. And it makes me feel like I'm being punished, like all of this is one big punishment for me." June felt extremely vulnerable as the words left her mouth, so she chose to avoid any type of eye contact as she did so.
"You feel that way too?" Elle had stopped walking now and was staring at the girl with a look of surprise.
"Yeah, I know it's crazy to think this is all about me, but it's hard to shake I guess." June had stopped walking now, too, and was staring back at the girl.
"No, I get it completely," Elle paused and nodded. Suddenly, it felt as though these two girls were the only ones who really understood each other.
They held eye contact for a few moments that felt as if they were hours. Their moment of connection was interrupted by Elle's phone beeping, and her fishing around in her pockets to retrieve it. Once she pulled it out, it beeped a few more times and the girl's face seemed to fall slightly as she looked at the screen. June knew it must be texts from Campbell, and she was brought back down to reality. Elle would never want her in the way that she wanted her to.
"I should probably get going, catch up with Allie and Will," June sighed and stared down at her shoes.
"Oh, right, well thanks for coming with me," Elle seemed momentarily disappointed, but quickly masked it with a smile.
"If you ever need someone to talk to or just some company, just text me," June offered with a weak smile, before turning on her heels. She called back over her shoulder: "See you around."
Within seconds June had her phone out and was texting Allie. She hoped she'd be able to hide her emotions, because if Allie realized something was wrong, she wouldn't let it go. She knew she couldn't tell her why she was upset, but at least being around her could be a distraction.
Allie was quick to respond with her location, followed by the expected 'everything okay?' text. June forced a smile, even though the girl couldn't see it, and wrote out a response claiming she was simply bored. Her phone dinged almost immediately, and a real smile found it's way onto her face at the girl's response.
'If you're so bored, meeting me to count food won't exactly fix that,' The text read.
June shot back 'time spent with you is never boring' accompanied with a winky face.
The girl's had fallen comfortably into a relationship like this, as if they had been friends for years rather than just a little over a week. They both had found that time spent together was so easy, so natural, that it was hard to imagine how they had ignored each other in school.
Allie responded with 'you flatter me' and a blushing face, causing June to smile again and tuck her phone into her pocket.
When she arrived at the little shop on Wendell St. that Allie was at, the blonde girl was exiting with a book bag slugged onto her shoulders. June furrowed her eyebrows at the sight, not realizing the girl was already done and that Will wouldn't be with her.
"I finished this whole street today," Allie huffed and gestured down the road.
"What about the grocery store?" June questioned.
"Will and I split up, I figured I'd go there now,"
June and the girl fell into step as they made their way to the grocery store. Allie rambled about how awful doing inventory was and how smart the girl was for not volunteering for that job. June found herself being thankful she hadn't offered to help Will and Allie with the task.
"So, what did you do all day?" Allie turned her head and looked at the girl. The grocery store was just up ahead.
"Um," June paused, deciding whether she wanted to include Elle Tomkins in her narrative of the day or not. "Well, I decided to go for a walk, and I ended up at Helena's sermon, and that's about it."
"Hm, never pegged you as the religious type," Allie cocked an eyebrow.
"I'm not," June admitted. "But, she was trying to help."
The girls entered the grocery store lightly giggling, but soon turned silent. On the floor in one of the aisles, Will and Kelly sat counting food with one another. June bit down on her lip at the sight, then focused her attention on Allie, who looked gutted. The blonde girl stared for a few moments more before wordlessly turning and exiting the store.
"Al, wait up," June called from behind her once she made it outside. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Allie forced a smile, one June could tell was fake, and nodded her head. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"You don't have to do that, not with me," June shook her head.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Allie shook her head and began walking away from the grocery store. June simply sighed and decided not to press the matter.
The rest of their walk was in silence. June wasn't sure if she should try to make conversation, or give the girl space, or what, so she simply stayed quiet. As they came upon a gas station, June spotted one of her least favorite people, only second to Campbell, filling up the tank of his sports car. While June rolled her eyes at the boy, Allie seemed to change in demeanor slightly, returning to her confident self as she called out to him.
"You planning a trip?"
"A weekend jaunt to the coast," Harry responded as he turned around and spotted the girl. He paid June no attention, only focusing in on Allie.
"Hmm, yeah, I don't blame you. It's a nice town but it can get old pretty fast," Allie was now passing his car as she spoke. June stayed quiet still, wondering why Allie was even paying him any attention after the way he treated Cassandra.
"We're playing fugitive tonight," Harry informed the girl, something they both already knew. It was like it was all he could talk about. "You should come play with us."
The girls were now several feet in front of his car, but the offer made Allie stop in her tracks. June hadn't been paying attention, so she stopped a couple of feet ahead and shot Allie a confused look. She wondered if the girl was actually considering it.
"It's gonna be the biggest one yet," Harry informed once Allie glanced back at him. "Party at my house after."
"You asking me?" Allie questioned with a smile, cocking her head to the side. June's mouth fell agape, wondering why the girl was actually flirting with Harry Bingham.
"You can be my partner, if you want. I need a lookout," He offered, ignoring June's presence entirely.
"She's with Will, at the supermarket." Allie's smile fell as she relayed the information. It became abundantly clear to June that that's what this was all about, for both of them.
"Who?" Harry played dumb.
"The person you asked first."
"I don't care. You?" It was clear he was lying, either to just them or to himself as well.
"No," Allie lied back.
"We're in the same boat, why not the same car?" Harry smirked and Allie seemed to melt. June was suddenly very grateful she was a lesbian, because she didn't fall for the charm of some guy as shitty as Harry Bingham.
"You can't be an asshole to my sister or June then nice to me, it doesn't work like that," At the mention of her name Harry finally seemed to realize she was there.
"They can come too, both of them," Harry's lips formed into a thin line as he held eye contact with June. She narrowed her eyes at him before turning and beginning to walk with Allie.
"You say too many things you don't mean," Allie called out without looking back.
They walked in silence for a few moments, a small smile still playing on Allie's lips. June looked at the girl's face and scoffed, wondering how the boy could have such a profound impact on her. Allie was a smart girl, but messing with someone like Harry wasn't smart.
"What was that?" June finally spoke.
"What was what?" Allie let the smile fall from her lips and tried playing innocent.
"Oh come on, 'we're in the same boat, why not the same car'? How did you fall for that?" June asked incredulously.
"He's not that bad," Allie argued, her cheeks rising to a slight blush.
"To you, maybe, but to everyone else, he's an asshole," June argued, causing Allie to sigh.
"Look, if I go tonight, just come with me. Even if he is an asshole, it could still be fun,"
June narrowed her eyes at the girl and bit down on her lip, weighing her options. If she tagged along, she could keep an eye on Allie and prevent anything she might regret from happening. Going to a party with a hot guy after a heartbreak probably wasn't her best idea. Eventually, June sighed and nodded.
"Fine, I'll go."
