YOU'RE NOT SPECIAL
CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT - TAYLOR SWIFT
──── CHAPTER XXV
"I'll get to that...eventually." Maeve promised. "When I was in high school, I had what you call, 'A Finn' of my own." She smiled softly at the mention of Finn's name, watching her moms cheeks turn red. "Gosh, we were inseparable. We would sneak off late at night to the park where we wouldn't be seen and...we confessed our feelings for each other. I still remember it like it was yesterday. The 4th of July. We watched the fireworks and cuddled on the top of the slides away from our friends." Maeve chuckled gently. "Our friends would make fun of us and say we were in love and we denied it like crazy around others, but when it was just us...we knew what we had was real, and nobody making fun of us would change the way we felt for each other."
Ryker slowly stepped closer to her mother sitting on the bed, feeling intrigued to this story. She slowly sat down and looked up at her mom who was smiling fondly, thinking about this anonymous person to Ryker.
"What a dream she was."
Ryker's head snapped towards her mother and she turned around, leaning her back against her bookshelf and looked at her mother, softly whispering. "She?"
Maeve nodded slowly with a soft smile. "When I was fifteen, I fell in love with a woman." Ryker smiled at her mom with a bright, pearly white smile, feeling proud. "Oh, she was beautiful...Lucille Montgomery. She was my first love. She was the one person who made me feel...not so bad about myself. She told me I was beautiful every time she saw me."
"What?" She looked at her mom with a smile. "But-you had Pierce when you were fifteen?"
"Exactly." Maeve spoke softly. "My parents had caught us one night and since then engraved the idea it was sinful to be gay into my head." Maeve started. "They took me to church with them every Sunday and got me baptized to 'cleanse me of my sins.'...then, they introduced me to one of their fellow church-goers sons and...I liked him, not in the way I loved Lucille. But I eventually tried to love him..."
Rykers eyes widened and she looked confused at her mother. Her heart started beating out of her chest, looking confused at the woman who had noticeable tears welling in her eyes. She felt the rhythm of her heartbeat quicken as she felt the anticipation.
"That man was Pierce and Silas' father." Maeve explained. "But I didn't love him. I wanted Lucille, every part of me...but it wasn't right."
"Mom? Are you...?"
"I am bisexual." Maeve confessed to her child. "When I met your father, I finally felt love after Lucille."
Ryker smiled and hugged her mom the tightest she's ever hugged her. "Oh, mom." She felt a tear drip on her mothers shoulder, and chuckled nervously in these conditions. "I'm so sorry for everything you had to go through as a teen."
"I'm so sorry for all the things I said to you. I wasn't thinking right. I should've supported you." She hugged her daughter. "I'm sorry. I love you so much. I accept you for exactly who you are."
She chuckled and smiled at her mom. "I can't say I forgive you just yet, but I can say I now understand you a little better."
"I don't expect you to forgive me right away." Maeve responded. "I just hope you can let me back into your life slowly and forgive me when you're ready."
She nodded gently and hugged her mom again. "Does... does dad know?"
"Yeah, baby, he does." She gently ran her fingers through her daughters hair. "He has for years. He was supportive. And he knows that even though I like women, he's the one I fell in love with and married."
Ryker nodded slowly and looked up at her mom. "I'm so glad to have you back in my life. I missed you."
"I missed you, too, baby." Maeve hugged her daughter tightly then slowly pulled away. "You wanna tell me anything, now?"
"Um...no, I don't think so." She smiled. "But I'll tell you as soon as I do?"
Maeve chuckled at her daughter. "So you're not gonna tell me Finn's your boyfriend?"
"Okay! You got me." She laughed. "Yeah. He's my boyfriend."
"You like him a lot?" Maeve looked at her daughter. finally feeling at peace now that she can have a normal talk like this with her daughter instead of the two going at each other's throats every second and now can develop a good relationship, starting with relationship talks.
"I love him." She smiled, wrapping her hands behind her neck, leaning down to hang her head sadly. "And I've never told him that."
"Has he told you?" Her mom looked at her with curiosity and watched her daughter nod slowly.
"And you haven't said it back?"
"I'm scared." She admitted in a soft whisper. "What if I tell him I love him and...all the sudden I lose him? Because that seems to happen a lot with him."
"Still worried about what happened when you were fourteen?" Maeve questioned Ryker who slowly nodded. "That was years ago, darling. Neither of you are the same people you were back then."
"I know. It's just...what if I say 'I love you' and all the sudden he doesn't love me? If I say it, is he gonna freak out?" She asked her mom. "I'm just...I'm holding onto him so tight this time, I'm afraid if I even let the word 'love' slip out of my mouth around him, that he'll disappear again. But I'm also nervous if I don't say it, will he think I don't love him and leave?"
"Talk to him about it. Find the reassurance you need." Maeve advised her daughter, watching her smile softly as she hugged her mom again. "You can't let fear ruin a good thing."
Ryker smiled and nodded, standing up, holding her hand out for her mom to grab. "Shall we return to our boys?"
"We shall." Maeve playfully grabbed her hand and the two walked out of the door while laughing together.
"Well, this is a weird-but-beautiful sight." Andrew spoke. "You two made up?"
"Yeah." Ryker smiled, holding onto her mothers hand. "Turns out, she's a pretty cool mom."
"Weren't they just at each other's throats?" Silas whispered to Pierce.
"They're women, I don't understand them." Pierce responded to Silas with a laugh.
"No man does. We're not supposed to." Andrew spoke to his sons who laughed.
Finn stood up and walked over to his girlfriend, putting his hands on her shoulders and looking down at her with a smile.
"It's nice to see you with a smile on your face again." Finn spoke softly as he watched his words around the girls family. "You alright? Wanna talk?"
She chuckled and watched her mom send her an approving nod.
"I'm good." She looked up at him, feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket. "Uh, hey. Millie texted and said we should...start preparing."
"Great!" Finn spoke softly, smiling at his girlfriend with a glint in his eyes.
"Alright! Let's get this party started." She smiled at Finn and kissed his cheek, walking away quickly and running to the stairs.
She heard him laugh as she heard his feet rushing after her up the stairs. "Get back here!" and felt his arms snake around her waist and lift her in the air, carrying her up the stairs.
"Finn! Put me down!" She laughed loudly making him laugh as well, he opened her bedroom door and threw her on her bed as gently as possible.
She laughed loudly and Finn closed the door quietly, walking over to her and jumping on top of her playfully, giving her a soft kiss.
"Alright baby, what are we doing?" He asked as he rolled onto his back and laid by her side.
"Hopefully, the sun will blow up, wiping out all of humanity and we won't have to do this sleepover." She chuckled and leaned into him. "Do you think we should tell them?"
Finn rolled on his side, keeping himself propped up on his elbow and leaned forward, leaving a small kiss on her lips. "We don't have to do anything we don't want to."
"What do you want to do?" Ryker asked Finn and watched him smile softly.
"You may hate the answer, but I really don't mind what you wanna do." He said in a hushed tone, pressing a gentle kiss on her collarbone. "We don't have to be public for us to know we love each other."
Ryker took a deep breath, smiling happily at her boyfriend and cuddled into him, hiding her face in his neck.
"Alright, let's get up. We have a sleepover to prepare for that your family is most definitely gonna interrupt!" Finn smiled as he sat up, looking back at his girlfriend who was laying on her bed, grabbing onto her hands and pulling her to stand up. "Let's get this party started!"
"I should've stayed in the upside down!" She jokingly yelled, smiling as she and Finn ran out of her bedroom, rushing down the stairs to set up for the party.
"Let's have the best slumber party in slumber party history!"
