๐ฒ เฃชโโก๐ HER EYES SNAPPED OPEN, her cheeks stained with dried tears and her clothes still slightly damp. Sophie sat up in her bed, reaching one of her hands up to rub her eyes, the daylight shining through the window and onto the side of her face.
With a tired sigh, she slid off of the bed and stood up, letting out a yawn. She'd woken up a number of twelve times that night, and she even got up to make sure her mother was okay... which she glad was, sound asleep in her bed โ her father was working a night shift at the hospital.
Sophie quickly changed into a random white shirt she'd found at the bottom of her dresser, pairing it with some leggings and her sneakers, which were still soaked but she couldn't care less. With her hair, matted and greasy, she tied up into a ponytail. She honestly had no brain space to think about her appearance.
Her shoes, as expected, squeaked against the floor as she made her way down the stairs and the chatter coming from the kitchen quietened at the sound of her presence. When she reached the doorway, she turned her head to look down the hallway and into the kitchen doorway.
Corrine was sat at the kitchen table by the window, a coffee in her hands and a full coffee sat in front of her. Henry had returned from work, still in his scrubs with a tired expression, stood behind his wife, rubbing her shoulders. They were both looking towards her, Henry smiled wide as if nothing was wrong whilst Corrine looked worried, the corners of her lips upturning in the slightest, a glint of hope in her eyes.
But, the hope vanished as they both watched Sophie opened the door, rushing out and slamming the door behind her.
She had her keys in her hand as she stood on the porch, her fingers curling around her key, the sharp end digging into her palm. Her green eyes trailed across the road, noticing a few families in their gardens, climbing into their cars to go to school... It was a Friday after all.
But, Bella Swan's truck was still in her driveway whilst Charlie Swan's police cruiser was out of sight, nowhere to be seen.
Sophie looked away, jogging down her porch steps and she took a few steps forwards towards her car, only to hear the front door of the Swan residence opening. Bella walked out of her house in a rushed manner and Sophie took that as her chance to retrieve her bag, along with her cell.
"Bella!" Sophie called out, weakly jogging towards the older brunette, who spun around at the sound of her name being called. Bella's brows raised in surprise, expecting the St. James girl to be at school already and once she stopped just in front of her, Bella attempted a smile, giving her a one over. She looked a mess...
"Hey, Sophie. I'm sorry about just leaving you last night, I was in a hurry." Bella explained, sending the younger girl an apologetic look but Sophie waved her off, shaking her head.
"Oh, it's okay. Jacob gave me a ride back." Sophie told her, her brows pinched ever so slightly, however Bella's brows were extremely scrunched, clearly confused.
"He did? On his motorcycle?" Bella asked, her hand clutching onto her bag and Sophie nodded, fiddling with the sleeves of her black jacket, which she'd pulled on before she left the house. Bella's eyes widened with disbelief, shocked, "I didn't realise you two were close like that."
"We aren't, I was walking in the rain... It doesn't matter, I just came for my bag. I think it's in your truck." Sophie peeked over into the window, spotting her bag on the floor of the passenger seat and Bella nodded, grabbing her keys from a pocket in her bag, unlocking the car.
The older teenager rounded the vehicle and opened the door, pulling out Sophie's backpack. The aforementioned girl smiled a little when she took her bag back, quickly unzipping it to pull out her cell. She, surprisingly, didn't have any missed calls or unread texts, nobody had reached out to her and it sent a pang to her heart.
Her smile fell into a thin line as she switched the phone off, chucking it back into her bag, "Are you heading to school?" Sophie asked, zipping her backpack back up before slinging it over her shoulder.
Bella had a surprised look on her face, which quickly faded as she responded, "Actually, no... I was gonna go cliffโjumping." She admitted, letting out a sigh at the sight of Sophie's confused expression.
"Why?" The St. James asked, her brows scrunched together and Bella shrugged, picking at her nail beds.
"...An adrenaline rush, I guess. Do you remember that time when we went to the movies?" Bella suddenly brought up, shifting from one foot to the other.
"You mean the time I saved you from being kidnapped by motorcyclists and then we saw that weird illusion of Edward Cullen? Or the time when Jacob beat the shit out of Mike? Both are pretty memorable." Sophie chuckled dryly, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yeah, the time we saw Edward... Well, I want to see him again. He only pops up when I'm doing something reckless." Bella explained, rubbing her forearm nervously under Sophie's glare.
"That's reckless. Really? You're gonna jump off of a cliff for a ghost of a guy who left you? Not even a ghost, it's all just in your imagination." She let out a stressed sigh, in disbelief but it wasn't surprising when it came to Bella Swan, the queen of reckless decisions.
"Yeah, but somehow you see him, too. You could come with me to make sure I don't get hurt, if you want?" Bella suggested and Sophie scoffed, looking over towards the trees, "Look, I'm going with or without you."
It was silent for a moment and Bella rolled her eyes, turning around to walk away. But, once she took a few steps onto the road towards the woods, she heard footsteps behind her, causing her to smile to herself.
Sophie didn't know about Victoria, something Bella probably should've told her about, but she didn't...
But, Sophie St. James was a witch, right? She could protect herself, right?

"IT'S SO WINDY UP HERE!" Sophie called out, the strong wind causing goosebumps to rise on her arms under her jacket and she watched as Bella pulled off her own jacket, throwing it aside, along with her bag and cell, "Are you sure you want to do this?"
Bella glanced back at her, gasping when she saw an apparition of Edward, "Don't do this, Bella." He told her and she shook her head in denial.
"You won't stay with me any other way." Bella responded, turning back towards the cliff and without warning, she sped forwards, jumping off of the edge, into the water at least 70 metres โ if not more โ down.
Sophie gasped and rushed over, peaking over the cliff to see if Bella was okay. She waited a few moments, unable to see anything but massive waves, she was beginning to get concerned for the girl she hardly even considered a friend.
A couple of seconds later, Bella resurfaced, a wide grin on her lips and Sophie let out a sigh of relief, clutching her heart.
The wind was strong, and so were the soapy waves, tumbling towards Bella before she could even comprehend it, "Bella!" Sophie screamed out, watching with wide eyes as Bella was pushed back under the water, vanishing from sight, "Bella!" Sophie repeated, searching the water for any signs of Bella... but there were none, "Shit. I can't believe I'm doing this."
She pulled off her jacket, throwing it on top of her bag which she'd chucked by a tree once they arrived and she looked over the edge one more time, checking to see if Bella had resurfaced. To her dismay, she didn't, still underwater.
"One... Two..." Sophie took a few steps backwards and with a deep breath, she rushed towards the edge, "Three!"
She looked down at the crashing waves, pulling her knees to her chest and she squeezed her eyes closed with fear, just waiting to hit the water.
It eventually came and she was engulfed with freezing cold water, the feeling uncomfortable and painful. Reluctantly, she snapped her eyes open, searching around the water for any signs of Bella, mentally cursing the girl in her mind.
She flung her arms around frantically as soon as she spotted the older brunette, passed out and sinking deeper and deeper into the sea. Sophie swam down, attempting to stay as calm as possible and she reached her out, clutching onto Bella's upperโarm before she began to swim upwards, kicking her feet with determination.
As much as Bella annoyed Sophie, she wasn't about to let her drown.
She felt the air leaving her lungs and she began to panic, making sure she kept her grip tight on Bella's arm. It was a huge relief as soon as Sophie resurfaced, she let out a massive gasp, practically screaming for air and she held Bella close to her side.
But, Sophie wasn't exactly a weightlifter, and she wasn't exactly the strongest person. So, holding onto Bella and trying to float above the water herself was definitely one of the hardest challenges she'd ever been put through... ever.
Bella wasn't even that heavy, yet under the water, under the pressure and as she kicked her feet, trying to keep her head above the water, the older girl felt like a ton of bricks and she wasn't sure how much longer she could hold her for.
"Soph!" A voice called out and Sophie looked over with squinted eyes, blinking a few times until she locked eyes with Jacob, who swam towards them as fast as he possibly could, "What happened?"
"She wanted to go cliffโjumping, I don't know... I think she hit her head!" Sophie panicked, noticing smeared blood on her arm once Jacob approached, taking Bella from her arms with ease.
"Come on! Can you swim?" He called out, the sounds of waves crashing against the rocks almost deafening as they floated in the water and Sophie nodded, beginning to swim through the water. It was pretty hard, her arms felt like spaghetti as she somehow managed to make some process, just catching sight of the la push beach ahead.
Jacob made sure he swam behind her, keeping an eye on her through the strong waves even though Bella was unconscious in his arms.
"Almost there!" Jacob reassured, his eyes fixed on the back of her head. Her breathing was heavy, her ears clogged with water and the feeling of the freezing cold water surrounding her body felt suffocating, almost painful.
The amount of times she almost completely collapsed, the amount of times she almost sunk under the water, it was all tiring and she wasn't sure how much she could take. She slowed down, trying to catch her breath.
The sand was just there, so close yet so far, just out of reach, "I can't do it!" She sobbed dryly, no tears forming but it was clear she was upset. Jacob didn't slow down no matter how much he wanted to and he neared her, placing his hand on her lower back under the water, giving her the gentlest nudge with hopes it'd encourage her.
"Yes, you can! It's only a few metres." He reassured her, pulling Bella under his arm whilst his other hand latched onto Sophie's, dragging her forwards to support her. She inhaled deeply before accepting the fact that she couldn't stay in the water forever, and she followed behind him, her hand still intertwined with his.
It only took a few minutes... fortunately, and Sophie pushed herself away from the water, practically collapsing onto the sand beside where Jacob had placed Bella, "She isn't breathing, what do I do?" He panicked, unsure and Sophie reluctantly sat up, shuffling over to the pair.
"Move aside, you have to do CPR." She told him, pushing herself up onto her knees and she hovered over Bella's unconscious body. She placed both of her hands, overlapped over Bella's heart and began to pump thirty times with as much strength as she had left in her after that exhausting swim.
Then, she leaned down, opened Bella's mouth and pressed her lips against hers, giving her two rescue breaths. After, she repeated the process but luckily, she only had to do around twelve chest compressions before Bella began to cough up all of the water inside of her, gasping for air.
Sophie let out a sigh of relief and rolled over back onto the sand, out of breath whilst Jacob tended to Bella, though he was more concerned about Sophie, watching her intently.
"Sophie!" Sam Uley ran out of the woods opening and onto the beach, rushing towards the group as fast as he could, "Sophie!" He screamed out for the second time and Sophie looked over, sitting up on the sand, finally having regained her breath.
"Sam?" She furrowed her brows, quickly noticing the look on his face and she knew something was wrong, that something bad had happened. The brunette pushed herself to her feet, stumbling just a tad but she regained her balance just as quick as she lost it, watching as Sam stopped in front of her, a pained look on his face.
"Sophie... You need to come with me. Something happened. Jacob, get her home!" Sam placed his hand on Sophie's lower back, leading her off of the beach and into the woods. He refused to answer any of her questions, leaving her more concerned than she'd ever been but she knew something had happened... and she knew it was her fault.
She was psychic, after all.

AS SOON AS SOPHIE REACHED EMILY'S CABIN, which was super close by the beach, Embry ran out, rushing into Sophie's arms and she was stunned for a moment before wrapping her own arms around his torso. He didn't seem to be bother by her soaked hair and clothes.
Jared, Quil, Paul, Emily and Sam all stood nearby, watching with aching hearts whilst Sophie was the only confused one, her brows knitted together, "What happened?" She asked, pulling away from the embrace to look at the boy, who had teary eyes, only making it all worse than it already was, "Embry?"
"Your mom..." Embry whispered, a singular tears slipping down his cheek and Emily began tearing up from behind Embry, burying her face in Sam's bare chest. Sophie looked around, worried and ultimately bewildered, searching anything for answers.
Then, she looked up at the sky and there, like a sign, were letters in the cloud. Her eyes widened as she looked up, making out the word โ "DEAD"
She gasped, looking back down at Embry, her own eyes watering as they stared at each other, "She's..."
Before Embry could respond, Sam walked forwards, interrupting, "Your mother was worried about you, so she came to Embry but... a leech was running around the forest at the wrong time and..." He explained and with his words and the look on his face, Sophie's world collapsed.
A thousand bricks were dropped on her, and now, she wasn't able to hold them up. Instead?
She ran. She ran as fast as she could. Tears were flowing out of her eyes like a neverโending waterfall but she never stopped, pushing herself to her limit.
"No, no, no, no." She cried to herself as she swivelled through the trees, her soaked clothes weighing her down, making it all the more difficult to run.
Sophie was in denial, she wouldn't believe it until she saw it. She just wouldn't believe the person she loved most in the world was gone, her mother, her beautiful mother couldn't be dead. It was impossible, the universe wouldn't do that, would they?
The exit of the woods, the one she mistakenly entered through with Bella earlier that day, came into sight just ahead and she almost tripped over a tree stump, her eyes fixed on the opening no matter how blurry her vision was from the ongoing tears.
She sniffled, a fever developing but she couldn't care less as her feet reached the fresh green grass and she stopped. She froze, her eyes locked on her house in the distance.
There were two police cruisers. People were outside, from paramedics to officers, and just to the side was Chief Swan stood beside her father, who was sat on the grass with his knees to his chest, his face buried in his hands and his sobs were heard from where she was stood.
Her cries were quiet, yet heartbreaking as she stayed stood in place, knowing her father's cries of pain would be permanently tattooed in her brain for the rest of her life. Henry was the type of father, the type of man, to always play it cool, he never had reasons to cry, or to get mad, or to complain, or to judge. He got through situations like butter being spread, he did everything so smoothly and it inspired Sophie in ways he could never imagine.
But, hearing his gut wrenching sobs to just have his wife back in his arms again ripped her heart apart in ways Jacob never could, in ways nobody ever could.
Then, like yet another sign from above as the sun began to set, she looked down to her left and there it was... one singular lavender. Just one. And she choked another sob, staring down at the purple flower as her dad's cries continued.
It felt so surreal, she couldn't believe everything that had happened in the last few months. But, now it was past the line and her heart just couldn't be stitched back together this time.
She fell down onto the grass, running a hand through her hair as her cries became louder, but only slightly.
Her hand reached over to the lavender, her fingertips just brushing against the petals but that was all it took for her eyes to widen and she was embraced. She was hugged tightly, and it felt like how it would feel to be hugged by a spirit, a spirit that was full of only love, warmth and joy.
It was her mother... and the lavender spawned that, only causing her to sob all the more. All of her tears were used up, but she kept crying.
Sophie plucked the flower from the ground, holding it tightly in her hand as if it'd magically vanish if she released it even a little bit. She held it closely to her chest, the aching in her chest becoming less painful.
Footsteps sounded behind her, approaching, but she didn't care. She just watched from afar as Charlie Swan crouched down in front of Henry St. James, placing his hand on his shoulder and pulling him in for a hug.
And, just as the two men embraced, an arm slithered around Sophie's shoulders and her reddened eyes trailed over to the person beside her, instantly recognising the scent and the intense warmth.
He was just sat there, his own eyes watered yet glued onto hers and he pulled her into his chest, holding her and never letting go until she asked.
Jacob Black began to cry, too, as he held the love of his life, he couldn't bear to see her in so much pain. So much agony that he could practically feel it radiating off of her, a little part of him was proud of her for not ripping the trees down or bringing the world to flames, things he knew that she was capable of if she channeled all of her hurt.
"Please, make it stop. Please, Jake." She cried into his chest, and his heart ached more than ever as she finally called him by the nickname she'd refused to for so long, his heart was ripped in half at the sound of her sobs.
"I know, baby. Just close your eyes." He spoke in a gentle, hushed tone, stroking the back of her head, his fingers running through her damp hair as she continued to cry into his bare chest, "I know, I know." She was practically in his lap as he cradled her.
None of it was real. It was all a dream. It had to be.
Sophie St. James fell asleep in Jacob Black's arms that night, and he couldn't relish in that moment, a moment he could only ever dream of. It was the night Corrine St. James had died and it couldn't have been a worse night for his dreams to finally come true.
He was going to kill that redheaded leech and make her suffer for what she caused because Sophie โthe sweetest girl he'd ever met โ never deserved the punishment for doing nothing but be strong, beautiful and the love of his universe.
