- Chapter 3 -
If anyone told me I would be out in the world helping in gathering the minority of survivors I would laugh at their faces. And, if anyone told me there would be an undetected virus that killed people and then turned them into monsters that crave for human flesh that turn other people into them, I would think they are crazy.
But, crazy became reality that not one person was prepared for. Madness was what ruled Earth. I believe it is the one thing that is responsible for all of this.
I put the black jacket on, looking at the long mirror in front of me. A long, wavy brown hair girl with pale skin that makes her eyes look even greener than they should be stared back at me. I swatted off any invisible dust that was on my black uniform, then looked up again.
Allie, you'll survive this. You always do.
I heard my mom's warm, assuring tone. Her voice was always in the back of my head telling me to keep going when I felt like I couldn't. She was always there even when I couldn't see her.
The girl in the mirror became blurry, and I blinked a couple of times trying to hold back the tears. I brought my hands up to my necklace that was resting on my neck. There was a small, circular pendant constructed into it. Sun and the moon were inscribed.
"What's this mom?" My 12 year old self had a giddy smile on her face as she looked at the beautiful necklace.
My mom crouched down to be on the same level as me, and unclasped it. Her bright eyes were content. She replied as she put it on, "This necklace represents our family history."
I looked down, observing the symbols. My face held a frown, trying to figure out why the sun and the moon exactly. So, I asked.
She smiled again standing up. "You will learn in time. It's the legacy of the Rodger's family. It is what defines me, your dad, your grandparents, and..." My eyes were circles of wonder. I patiently waited for her to continue, "And it is what defines you."
I got out of the hallway to see Kana leaning against the wall. She looked at the watch with frustration.
"You are 10 minutes late." She grumply muttered, starting to walk.
"I - I didn't know when you were going to show up." I refined it. "Commander said I'm starting the training today; he never said when."
"That's why you ask me or anyone else beforehand," She argued, speeding up. Her hazel eyes were in rage. She didn't care about my excuses. "You need to be on time."
I wanted to say that I didn't know anyone else here. That I didn't even want to do this. That it's only 10 minutes late and that she's exaggerating. I didn't say anything like that though.
Instead I muttered, "Sorry."
We got on the first floor and into the training room. It wasn't the training room we usually were each morning where the trainers taught us.
It was a bigger one, with thousands of different pieces of equipment stacked onto the shelves around the room. Punching bags were in one section, weights were in another, treadmills, bows and arrows, guns - there was so much room that a hundred people could fit without a struggle.
"Finally."
Chase took a hold of the punching bag that was about to swing with ease. I know that bag weighed a bunch but it didn't seem to bother him one bit. I looked at him. He had a simple, black shirt on with black sweatpants. Even with the loose clothing, everyone could tell he was muscular.
His brown eyes looked at both of us. Oh god. He was annoyed too.
"Don't blame me," Kana intervened before Chase could say anything. She held up her hands in surrender, innocently. "It was the newbie that was late."
I tried not giving her the glare. Chase didn't take his eyes off of me. He was reading me, studying me. It was the moment I realized everyone here knew about me joining their team. Commander informed them. No one was surprised I was here.
Kana outstretched her hand, giving me the gun. I looked at it but did not take it.
"I don't know how to use it," I admitted and she rolled her eyes. If it was even possible for someone to get more annoyed, then it was her at the moment.
"Whoever was your trainer before needs to be observed better."
I felt bad for a poor person that had her as a trainer. I didn't understand why she was acting this way. Just 24 hours ago she was completely different.
"Kana go with your daily protocol." And she listened. But who wouldn't? Chase's voice was calm but powerful. It wasn't a reminder, it was an order. "Aliana and I will start from the beginning."
Once Kana left he spoke, "Honestly...I don't know why Commander wanted you to work with us."
I didn't reply. We moved to one of the open punching bags, and I started hitting it. "And I can understand Kana, for not being happy with you here," He continued, walking to the opposite side of me.
I could feel my pulse under my wrist. Ticking. Ticking. Ticking. It matched my heart, that was getting louder each second.
He really had no filter.
"I don't think you are ready," It seemed like he wasn't able to stop. Or maybe he just didn't care how his comments made me feel. "But Commander...when he gets his mind onto something it's hard to convince him he is wrong."
I tried my best to ignore him. I tried to count the number of times I was punching the bag. 18, 19, 20.
"I don't want you here either but- "
That was the moment I lost it. My heart was burning, roaring. My blood was boiling, the ticking spreading through my arms, neck, ears, my whole body; and I punched the bag as hard as I could.
It flew and he moved out of the way avoiding the hit. With 2 hands he stopped the swinging of it.
I tried to control my breathing. Tried to lower down the tapping that was hurting my brain. His eyes were looking at me, unexplainably. I tried to read him but it was effortless. It was like he had a protective shield over him.
I stared at him, not wanting to pull away first. I was already an outcast but them not liking me added another level of struggle.
Finally he nodded in approval. He had a ghostly smile on his face that if you didn't focus enough, you would never be able to see it, "Good."
And realization crossed over my face. He was testing me. I didn't know what the test was for but I knew for certain he was. He wanted to see me angry. To pull on my strings, until I fought back.
It was the moment I set my mind on one goal. Just one. Show them I was capable of this. And most importantly, prove Chase Ledger he was wrong.
