- Chapter 11 -

The designated groups separated just like it was planned. Cody, Dylan and I took the left wing of the hospital. The left wing was where all of the patients used to get treated. Most of the surgery rooms and waiting rooms were positioned here based on what Cody told me.

I looked around, taking notice of the building. Cody's incessant voice faded in the air. The first thing I looked for just like always were the exit doors. There were four that I counted so far. Each one was a good distance from the other. It made me feel safer knowing I wasn't trapped in here. Worst comes to worst, I could always leave.

The word leave sent a strange feeling down my spine. It frightened me. Even if I did manage to leave, where was I going to go? All alone I knew I had no chance of surviving. I anticipated that the Infected were going to spread and that the world was going to become much deadlier as the time passed. However, it was happening quicker than I thought. I didn't want to admit but the Infected were winning. By a lot. The only way you could have a chance of surviving was staying together.

As my mind drifted back to reality, Cody's voice was still jabbering. I noticed none of us had a map of the hospital and I wondered if they went here so many times they memorized every room in this ginormous place. However, Dylan didn't seem so well aware of the hospital either. He was almost as clueless as me.

I found myself asking, "Cody, how do you know this hospital so well?"

There was dead silence between us, and both of the guys stared at me like they forgot I had the ability to speak. Dylan glanced at Cody and I knew he was aware why Cody was so orientated around here. I could tell they were silently conversing between one another and I realized they were more than just trainers that shared the same faith. They were close.

I felt embarrassed even asking when Cody finally spoke, "Just spend a lot of time here ya' know?"

That was a vague answer but I didn't want to push it. He was reserved, and carefully chose his words, so I nodded, acting like I understood what he meant.

"Where are you from Aliana?" Dylan asked as we turned left, entering the surgical room.

I furrowed my brows at the hot air that hit my face as I answered, "New York City."

I wanted to continue the conversation because I was finally talking to the trainers. They finally acknowledged me. However, both Dylan and Cody didn't bother to say anything. They were getting out the list of supplies, focusing fully on the task in front of them. I followed their suit, ignoring the humidity of the room. I regretted choosing to wear the long - sleeved shirt. I could already feel droplets of sweat sliding down my back.

I looked at the list.

Needles. Sterliziers. Syringes. Anesthesia.

The list kept going and I moved to the drawers in the far corner, checking what's inside them. It was extremely dusty but filled with everything you needed. I took a handful of syringes and needles.

The sounds of drawers closing and opening was what kept the silence bearable. Every couple of seconds, I glanced my view up to either Cody or Dylan. Part of me was to check if I was doing the right thing, but part of me also wanted to make sure they were still here and that I wasn't left alone. I don't think they noticed me staring, and even if they did they didn't say anything.

I moved to the other drawer on the other side of the large room, finding tablets, antibiotics and bandages. I looked at the inscriptions of each medicine, in order to take only what's needed. However, anything would come in handy eventually.

A low growl, and a loud slam of the door next to my body caused me to drop the capsule of amoxicillin. It crashed onto the wooden floorboard, shreds of it flying across the room. I looked up, to see the Infected bloodshot eyes hungrily watching me. It bared its dirty teeth at me, punching the glass door over and over again.

I backed away quickly, hitting the wall with a small thud. Dull ache moved up my back that didn't matter at the moment. I tightly held the white bag of the supplies I found in one hand, while curling the other into a fist hiding how much it was shaking.

I couldn't breathe, and much to my dismay my eyes were unmoving from the Infected. I could feel a large hand wrapping around my shoulder, as it took the bag away from me.

"Get her outside," I heard Cody's voice but it seemed so far away. Dylan was muttering something quietly in my ear, trying to get me back but I couldn't wrap my head around his words. They were so foreign. Was he speaking in another language? "I'll deal with this."

Snap out of it Allie.

I wanted to tell them that I was fine. That the Infected only scared me because it appeared out of nowhere.

Dylan's image appeared in my view as he shook me to bring me back to normal state. My eyes finally peeled away focusing on Dylan's. I could grasp the words he was speaking.

My mouth was dry but I gasped out, "I'm fine." He ignored my assurances, taking my hand, and getting me out of the room.

Dylan and I waited for Cody to get out. I was leaning against one side of the wall, while the raven - haired boy was opposite me. We haven't said a word to each other the moment we stepped into the hallway. I wished we were though. For some reason I wanted to explain myself to him.

"He - he came out of nowhere," I began. He was checking the supplies in both his and my bag, but I knew he was listening so I continued. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have reacted that way, I don't why I did -"

"It's your first run. It happens," He cut me off, finally looking up at me.

I sighed in relief. At least he wasn't going to say anything to Chase. Cody however, I wasn't sure.

Cody got out of the surgical unit, cleaning his ka-bar style knife over his pants. Both of us stood up, Dylan handing him the bags.

"We have everything?" Cody asked, skimming over the bags.

Dylan looked over to me for a quick second, seeming remorseful. "Amoxicillin is the only thing we didn't get."

"Is there more?"

Dylan shook his head and my heart dropped. They lost the last capsule of tablets because of me. Patients that needed the medicine won't get it because of me.

I noticed Cody's light green eyes at my figure and could practically feel his radiating annoyance.

"Well," He gave out a quick breath, starting to walk back from where we came from. "We'll see what Chase will say to that."

The path back was different than when we were coming here. Up to the surgical unit, Dylan and Cody were joking around, keeping the eerie feeling of the hospital a little bit lighter. None of us said a word on the way back though. Surprisingly, Dylan wasn't leading alongside Cody, but was walking next to me. Even without saying anything, I felt better knowing he was by my side in this.

We all met at the truck at the exact time we said we were gonna be back. Cody handed the bags to Chase as Dylan beat him saying, "We got everything except for Amoxicillin."

Chase furrowed his brows, a big wrinkle appearing on his forehead. "Why not? That was one of the main things on the list."

"There wasn't any left," Dylan shrugged, and I tried keeping myself calm and collected. Cody gave him a look as he put the weapons back into the trunk, but Dylan ignored him.

Chase looked at all three of us, and I prayed to God he would buy Dylan's story. He shook his head, moving to the back of the truck as well. Though, he said nothing to any of us.

I started breathing again, relief washing over me. I didn't know why Dylan was willing to cover up for me. He knew me for less than 24 hours. Nonetheless, I was grateful.

As we boarded the vehicle, I gripped his sleeve, bringing his attention. "Thank you," I whispered.

Keeping it short and not raising any suspicions, he gave me a tight - lip smile and with a nod got inside.
