Selections, sadness and comfort
A/N: I'm currently running out of ideas for Wildest Dreams so the next update will be when I can actually come up with something good enough, till then, most of the updates will be of Style. I understand the eagerness for the updates and I'm sorry about the lack of updates but I'm simply not being able to write Wildest Dreams, it took me quite a long while writing this chapter as well, rest assured, given the requests I've received I won't end Wildest Dreams so soon but I won't be able to update as frequently
" Shubi's been upset all day." Jugnu murmured.
Sara sighed.
She knew far too well why.
" I'll call him up." She promised.
" Has he reached Mumbai?"
" Yeah."
" Alright, I'll call him up. Talk to you later KP! Bye!"
" Bye!"
She picked up the telephone receiver first and called for Chaya.
" Yes Ma'am?"
" Can you make a booking for Taj Wasabi tonight? Window table please!"
" Sure Ma'am!" Chaya nodded and walked out.
As soon as she left, Sara called Shubman.
He received it in the very first ring, and she let out an inaudible sigh of relief.
" Hi Shub! Did you reach safely? When did you reach? Have you had anything?"
" Hey..." Shubman's voice came out a mere whisper, and Sara's heart broke.
" I reached half-an hour ago."
" Did you eat anything?" She deliberately repeated her question and heard an audible sigh in response.
" Bhook nahi thi."
Sara's lips parted to chide him but she bit it back, she didn't have it in her heart to make him even more upset than he already was.
" Par mujhe bohot bhook lagi hai! I had absolutely no time throughout the day to have a proper meal! How about we go for dinner tonight to Wasabi?"
" You skipped meals again?" His voice came as an incredulous chide and she bit back a smile.
" Could ask you the same Mr.Gill! C'mon please let's go for dinner tonight? My treat!"
" Can...can we go some other day? Are you at work right now?"
" Yeah, why?"
" You have any meetings lined up today?"
" Not really."
" Can you come over to Jugnu's...please?"
" I'll be there. Soon. Let me wind up for the day, give me half-an-hour."
" Okay. I'll wait for you."
" Bye! I love you!"
" I love you too."
Chaya walked in as she hung up.
" No tables available for today Ma'am. I can book you one tomorrow though!"
" Thank you Chaya, you can do that. Cancel all my meetings for today please. I'll be going home early."
Chaya nodded, knowing quire well why.
" Alright Ma'am! Take care!"
" Thank you Chaya, take care as well." She gave her a smile, trying her best to hide her feelings.
She smiled back, a comforting smile on her face that had her sigh shakily.
" Ma'am, if you don't mind, can I say something?"
" Sure, go on."
" I know its hard. It's bound to be given what happened. But it'll be okay. Sometimes, you can let your demeanour slip. You're human too. If you hold on, pretending it doesn't hurt, it'll hurt more. So you can show that you're not okay. No one is going to judge. And those who do, well they're idiots."
A grateful smile spread on Sara's lips this time as she gave a nod.
" Thank you Chaya. It means a lot. Really does."
Chaya grinned back before walking out.
As she left the office and reached Jugnu's house, he looked all ready to leave.
" Where're you going?" She asked with a slight frown and he shrugged.
" I have a date!"
" Do you really? KP-"
" Sara, Shubman needs you the most right now. More than anyone else. And you need privacy. Besides, I'm in the process of getting a girl too okay? I'm not going to third wheel today! No way!"
She sighed softly, a small smile on her face as she nodded.
" Enjoy your date!"
" I will! Bye!"
" Bye!"
She stepped in and the door shut behind her, making her way to Shubman's room, she pushed it open.
He lay with his phone in hand, scrolling through reels Ishan and Abhay had sent to cheer him up.
Sighing inaudibly, she crouched to the bed, wounding her arms around him, placing her chin on his shoulder as she peeked to see what he was looking at.
Suddenly tensed, he relaxed at the familiar scent of the berry perfume, his fingers curling around her wrist.
" Missed me?" Her voice came slightly muffled and he nodded wordlessly.
" How much?"
" A lot." He murmured.
" I don't believe it." She shook her head and he frowned.
" Why not?"
" You're not even turning to look at me!"
He chuckled, but she could tell far too well it was a mirth chuckle.
" I don't want you to have a fall my love."
Humming, she pulled away, sitting up and he turned around, sitting up as well, and brushed a loose strand away from her cheek.
" I'm so glad you're here." He murmured and she smiled.
" And I'd be glad if you stop pretending around me."
" I'm fine-I-"
" I know you Shub. And I can tell quite well that you're not fine. You're very upset. So let it out please."
Letting out a shaky sigh, he leaned in, seeking solace in her arms as tears trickled down his cheeks.
" I'm not fine. I'm really not. I'm tired of showing the world I am. I wasn't playing that bad Sara, I agree I could've scored better but I was scoring, I was making runs. I was promised I'd be a part of the T20 World Cup. And then...they just drop me off last minute? I was...really looking forward to play for India this once. Am I...am I that bad a player?"
Sara's heart broke as she shook her head, pulling away to wipe his tears
" That's not true Shub. You're an excellent batsman, and y'know what, if they've dropped you, it's their loss they've dropped an awesome player."
Chuckling sardonically, he looked down, tears beginning to brim his eyes and she held back a shaky sigh, moving closer as she cupped his cheek, tilting his face so that she could look at him as she shook her head.
" What I do for you to be convinced that you're truly amazing? Shub, y'know what had me fall for you back then? It was your dedication, hard-work and discipline for cricket. You don't just love batting, you worshipp it. It equals God for you. You worship the game like anything. That's what made me fall for you more than anything else."
Shubman leaned forward yet again, pulling her in, embracing her.
" They're trolling you because of me as well, I hate that. I hate it when they do that. Sometimes I feel I probably don't deserve you."
" Ek kheech ke tamacha maarungi na, sab deserve-reserve bahar nikal aayega. The next time you say this, I'm not talking to you."
" I'm serious. Why are you with me? Don't you have enough trollers that you got more of them now? You deserve bet-"
" I deserve the best and the best is you. I have the best by my side. If this is what you're gonna start off about then I'm done Shubman. I'm not here to hear my boyfriend talk shit about himself. Because no one talks shit about my boyfriend, not even he himself, I won't allow it."
" Don't call me Shubman please." He murmured, well aware that Shubman was usually when she was serious about something, or really mad.
" Don't make me mad then."
" You don't get mad that easily."
" Well you've always been perfectly capable of making me mad!"
He chuckled softly, recalling how he'd get on her nerves and be the only person to test her patience.
" I-they always drag Anushka Bhabhi or Ritika Bhabi every time Cheeku Bhaiya or Vi Bhaiya fail to play well in any of the matches, sometimes it gets so bad that they even drag Sammy and Vamika into it. I can't bear to see them do that with you. I can't tolerate them hating you Sara, not you. You don't deserve it. And...that..that makes me feel less deserving of you. You already had people trolling you for being a starkid, for simply existing, and...as if..that wasn't enough, they started hating you for dating me through mere rumours, despite us not making an official declaration. That...makes me guilty—"
" You shouldn't be. Not on behalf of immature people who hardly think about the consequences of their words and actions. Shub, I don't care about them, they don't matter to me. You matter to me. And you saying you do not deserve breaks my heart but it makes me equally mad! You don't get to waltz into my life, make me fall head over heels for you, treat me like a Princess—"
" You are a Princess." He cut her in but she ignored him.
"—Treat me like a Princess, are there for me every time I need you, fly to Mumbai at almost every opportunity you get, give me your time, and you suddenly think about waltzing out? Excuse me? You do not get to do that Shubman!" She crossed her arms against her chest and he promptly burst into tears, shattering her heart into pieces yet again.
But she did not let herself falter.
How could she when her man himself was in a bad state?
" Shub, you know sometimes, failures are ways of making us even stronger and proving to the world, and proving why dropping you was a bad decision they made. You my love, are one of the best players they can ever get y'know that? And I don't care who disagrees, they're all stupid to disagree, but I know the truth. And I know my man. So I most definitely know how good a player he is."
" I do want to prove it. Prove it for myself, prove it for my Father, prove it for my fans, I want them to regret dropping me."
" Then prove it. You have it in you." She gently wiped his tears, shaking her head at him and he inevitably found himself pulling her in for an embrace again.
" Thank you. I love you." He murmured and her pretty features eased into a smile.
" And I love you. Can we grab a bite now please? I'm very very hungry!"
" Let's go to Wasabi."
A look of triumph morphed on her face and she nodded.
" Sure!"
" C'mon Mr.Gill! My treat! Get up and go get ready! It's not good to keep your hungry girlfriend waiting for long! Or she can get really mad!"
" Hangry is what you mean." He laughed and her smile widened, fondness glimmering in her gaze, happy seeing him happy.
Because that's all what mattered, right?
