Light Amidst the Dark
A/N: No diary entry in this chapter either lmao, I think y'all might get used to it soon, also, this chapter is really close to my heart because of the vulnerability shown and the trust placed to show it, I hope you like it as much as I did!
Shubman loved the rains in Mumbai.
He didn't have an accurate reason for it.
But he just did.
They had a different kind of a serenity to offer.
Whatever could be bad about rains unless they start off during a match?
Powercuts.
And if it was at night, yet at a working hour, it was even worse.
For him?
No not really.
But for Sara, yes.
And that was the exact first thought that came to his mind after the lights went off, and he was told there was a powercut all over Bombay
" Sara..." He mumbled, his eyes widening in realisation, concern spreading within him.
" Kitna Sara Sara karta hai yaar, ab Kaun khaa gaya tera sara khana?"
Shubman ignored Seb's exasperated sigh as he immediately picked up his phone to ring Chaya.
Unfortunately, it was switched off.
" Shit shit shit...who can I call?" He muttered under his breath wondering to himself.
" Lysh!"
Dialling her contact, he waited for her to receive it which she immediately did.
" Hello?"
" Hi Lysh, I hope I'm not disturbing you?"
" Nope, not at all! What's up?"
" Uh...are you not in Mumbai?" He asked, confused at how calm she sounded.
" No, I'm in Italy, why do you ask?"
" Is Sara with you?"
" I've come with my parents! What's the matter? You sound worried."
" There's a powercut..."
" Shit...these are her working hours and her office is getting renovated. There are issues with the inverter too. God no, this is terrible news! Did you call Chaya? Did she receive your call? Try at the reception if you can please. Her state turns pathetic. Can you please do something?"
" Lysh..Lysh calm down. I called Chaya but her phone was switched off. I'll do something okay? And once I know she's fine, I'll tell you."
Alysha took a while to calm down, and hung up once she did.
Neither did anyone at the reception receive his calls, nor could he get any news on Sara.
So as he got up to leave, Seb frowned.
" Kitthe?" Jugnu who stood at the doorstep of the room asked
" I need to know if she's fine or not."
" Arey itne baarish mein kaha jaaoge? Aur light ka problem hai toh gharpe inverter hai, do minute mein aa jaayenge wapas."
" Yaha aayenge, vaha nahi. Uske office mein inverter ka issue hai, replace karne vale they aaj."
He walked out before Seb could retort and overheard him talk to Jugnu.
" Paaji roko isse. Itne baarish mein fas gaya toh problem hogi."
" Woh nahi sunega. Jaane de. Shubi! Take the driver along!"
" I can drive!"
" I have absolutely no doubt about your excellent driving skills but I'd still insist that you take the driver along."
Shubman was in no mood for arguments, nor did he have the time to argue.
So he just agreed with Jugnu.
He ended up taking his bodyguard along too, because Seb was too insistent.
The black Audi stopped outside the building and he stepped out, hoping no Viral Bhayani would show up.
To his good luck, no one did.
As he rushed in, least bothered about the rain, the receptionist was frantically making calls.
" Sir? Good that you're here! Ma'am is locked in and we cannot get her out! She isn't responding either! She will probably respond to you! If you can please do something?"
Shubman nodded.
" Where is she?"
" VVIP Conference room."
" Any locks or passcodes for it to be opened?"
" Passcode. But it recently changed and no one apart from Chaya and Ma'am know what number it is."
" Where is Chaya?"
" She had to rush home because of an emergency."
" Is there someone, anyone who might know the passcode?"
" Alysha Ma'am or Arjun Sir probably? Or your sister! I'm really not sure."
Shubman nodded.
" Where's the VVIP Conference room?"
" Third floor, to the right of the elevators. I can take you there—"
" No stay here I'll manage."
He rushed upstairs and rang Shahneel first.
" I'm not sure. Try putting in Her birth date, Anjali Ma'am's birth month and Sachin sir's birth year maybe?"
" Done! 121173-It opened! Thank you so much Shah! I'll call you later!" Without waiting for her response he rushed in.
With great difficulty, he found Sara trembling in the corner with her knees drawn close, behind the table, pushing the chairs back, he kneeled before her.
" Sara?" He murmured softly and her head lifted up, and her hand wrapped around his wrist, seeking human contact and comfort.
" I'm there." He moved closer, affirming her and relief spread on her face, nodding.
" I need light...there's no light...I'm scared." She confessed shakily and his heart twisted and broke.
" They're..they're working on it. There'll be light soon, yes? Hey...look at me please, it's going to be okay."
She looked up at him, tears pooling her eyes and he sighed, his heart breaking.
His hand hesitantly cupped her cheeks as he wiped her tears.
" It's going to be okay Sara. It's going be alright."
" Promise?" She asked with childlike innocence and his heart broke yet again and he nodded.
" Promise."
" Can you...Can I...please hug you?" She asked frailly and he immediately scooted closer, wrapping his arms around her, his chin resting on the crown of her head, her face pressed onto his chest.
If this was some other day, some normal day, he'd probably be elated, but today, he was more worried.
" Your heart's beating so fast." She mumbled out of observation and his cheeks heated up.
" It's...probably because I ran up here." He said scratching his nape.
" Why?"
" Never mind why. Do you remember our trip to London, you chased me around with a knife, you never apologised for it!" He said in an attempt to distract her.
" I didn't?"
" You didn't!"
" Well...well...you were being too...annoying! You told that blonde model that I was your ex-girlfriend!"
" You're going to hold a grudge for that too? You hated being linked to me so much?" He chuckled and he felt her shake her head.
" That's not the case. Never mind. Don't you?"
" No." He said truthfully and she pulled apart.
" How?"
But before he could respond, she flinched as a haunted tune played by outside the conference room.
" WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, WHO PLAYS HORROR MOVIES IN SUCH A SITUATION?" He heard a girl yell outside the conference room and a guy responded with a sigh as he shut it off.
" It's gone..He turned it off. It's okay. It's going to be okay." He kept mumbling the last sentence like a mantra as he put his arms around her, drawing circles on her back in order to calm her down.
Sara held him tight, softly sniffling.
As much as he hated the sight of her crying, she looked adorable with her nose turning slightly red.
" What is your favourite movie?" He asked her out of the blue.
" Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It's one of my favorites. I loved SRK's acting, But Aman deserved better. What's yours?"
" I liked sad, romantic movies in general."
" You must've enjoyed Om Shanti Om, Aashiqui 2, Kal Ho Na Ho, Ram Leela, The Lunchbox then."
" I did." Shubman admitted with a chuckle.
" I loved The Lunchbox. I always felt Irrfan Khan was too underrated, but too good an actor. He was so good in Piku and Angrezi Medium. He did a remarkable job in all his movies."
" Agreed. He deserved more recognition for his acting than he usually got. What's your favorite travel destination?" She asked him.
" Italy."
" Hey! That's mine too!"
" Stalking me are you? So that you can give the same answer? C'mon Sara, admit it!" He teased, his tone light and earned a light smack in return.
" You're never changing, are you? Narcissist." She muttered but her tone sounded playful.
Shubman chuckled as she pulled away, and he slightly leaned in when she looked up at him.
His gaze travelling towards her lips and she seemed to momentarily freeze and her eyes closed out of reflex, and as he locked his forehead with her and their noses touched, with him leaning in further, the room lit up and her phone rang and they pulled apart.
Shahneel<3 calling...
Shubman cursed under his breath.
" Babe, are you okay?"
As he rose to leave, and turned away, her soft palm wrapped around his wrist and he turned around, his brows furrowing.
Her gaze soft and vulnerable, she stared at him.
" Thank you. It means a lot to me. What you did." She murmured, her voice laced with gratitude.
And he simply smiled back, his dimples showing, and her heart fluttered.
