﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌

It’s been a month since I found out, and life hasn’t been the same ever since.

I started questioning everything. Every smile, every conversation, every “I love you” suddenly felt like a well-rehearsed lie. The truth twisted my world upside down, and now nothing makes sense anymore.

The only thing keeping me sane right now? My friends and Derrick. Without them, I honestly don’t know where I’d be. Probably six feet under or completely lost in the chaos of my own mind.

And the worst part?

The man behind all of this — my pain, the rumors, the way people look at me like I’m a mistake walking — he’s not even my real father.

I’ve been carrying the weight of his name, his choices, his wickedness, and for what? He isn’t even blood.

So what was all of it for?

It's the ending of November, meaning harmattan is coming, so I made sure to oil my skin and apply my lipgloss before putting on a grey sweater.

I stepped out of my room and made my way to the living room, only to find it once again — completely empty.

Ever since everything went down, Mum has barely been home. It’s like she’s trying to escape it all, escape me.

The house, once loud with laughter and filled with the smell of her cooking, now feels like a tomb. Cold. Silent. Suffocating.

I started remembering when we used to sit by the counter, make jokes and laugh about literally everything. Gone are those days.

"I didn’t even realize the tears had started falling. I wiped them away quickly — no time for weakness. Crying won’t fix this. It never has."

A sharp honk at the gate yanked me out of my foggy thoughts. My heart skipped. Derrick. He must be here.

I blinked rapidly, trying to snap back to reality, smoothing my clothes and forcing the remnants of emotion off my face. No time to overthink.

With one last deep breath, I scurried off toward the gate, feet barely touching the ground, pulse rising with every step.

The first thing I noticed when I got there was the car. It wasn’t his usual one, this time, it was a red Audi RS5 Sportback, gleaming under the sunlight like it knew it was being admired.

I hesitated, my feet slowing as my eyes locked onto the tinted window.
Like clockwork, the glass slid down —smooth, slow — and there he was. Derrick.

Our eyes met.
And then he smiled. That quiet, heart-melting kind of smile that made time feel like it had just stopped.

It wasn’t big. It wasn’t loud. But it was meant for me and in that second, that was enough to make everything else fade.

He stepped out of the car, his movements unhurried, deliberate — like the world could wait. With each stride toward me, my heartbeat picked up, but the moment his arms wrapped around me, everything else melted away. His embrace was warm, familiar, it felt safe. That scent — clean, comforting, uniquely him — wrapped itself around me like a lullaby, quieting the noise in my head.

When we finally pulled apart, he flashed that small smile and walked over to open the passenger door. Always the gentleman.

As I slid into the seat, my eyes widened a little. The interior was a whole new world — sleeker, softer, and way more luxurious than the outside let on. And that new car smell? Pure serotonin.

He quickly got in and started the car causing the engine to ignite to life.

"So you're now doing Yahoo, abi?" I blurted out, unable to hide the suspicion in my voice. "Who gave you this car?"

He laughed amused, eyebrows raised like I’d just slapped him. "So that’s what you think of me, huh? You don’t believe I could’ve worked hard for this?"

I let out a short laugh. "Be serious. Who actually gave you the car or where did you buy it from?"

"I traded my old car for this one. Just 900k," he replied, like it was pocket change. "It was a steal, honestly. Dexter hooked me up with this guy who exchanges exotic rides for basic ones at really fair prices."

My mouth dropped open. Did he just say just 900k? And did he say reasonable amount?

"You do realise some people in this country would literally pray to even see 900k in their lifetime, right? And who exactly gave you that money?"

He was hesitant to reply but eventually he did.

"No matter how much of a beast my father is, he actually leaves a lot of money in my account for me to take care of myself and my sister."

I felt bad for bringing this up, I should've just stayed quiet and admired the car in my mind.

"I'm so sorry for bringing this conversation up, I had no idea-"

"It's okay, you were just curious about my doings. It isn't a big deal to be honest."

"Can I see your sister today?" I asked out of the blues.

He was caught off guard by my question but still replied anyway. "Sure you can see her after school."

“He drove slowly toward the school gate and pulled into an empty spot. Stepping out, he came around and opened the door for me,such a gentleman, honestly. ”

And of course as we stepped out all eyes we're on us ─ or so I thought. They were actually just staring at the car we just came out from.

“Omo, guy! So you collect the red Audi RS5 Sportback and you no tell me? Na you dey hot o,” Dexter said as he walked over, with a hand on Flora’s shoulder.

Flora immediately pushed his hand off and ran straight to me, engulfing me in a tight hug — like, actually squeezing my internal organs.

“You sef, it don do! Do you want to kill her?” Dexter stepped in and did the honors of peeling Flora off me before I passed out.

“Oya, let me hug you,” Flora turned to him with a mischievous grin. “I know it’s bad belle that’s killing you.”

Then she gave him his own death-threatening hug.

We were all laughing at Flora’s usual antics when the vibe switched — fast. The laughter died instantly as we spotted Florence walking towards us, gripping a crowbar like she meant business. And she wasn’t smiling.

Flora rolled her eyes like she already knew what was about to go down.

“Florence, what is it this time?” Flora stepped forward, trying to block her path and contain the madness.

“I heard Derrick bought a new car,” Florence said, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I just came to say congratulations.”

“Okay thanks. But we were just about to leave,” Derrick jumped in quickly, trying to kill the tension before it exploded.

“Please don't leave, I would like to take a picture of frauds like you guys. Buying this rubbish, when people actually need this money for important things.”

“Come, this babe dey ment?” Dexter asked the question that bugged a lot of us.

“No I'm not okay, I'm pissed that justice is never served, you guys always get away with everything. Including you SONIA!!!” She looked at me with pure disdain. “You were literally about to kill Empress but you got away with it, why?”

I just stood there unable to answer her question, instead I had flashbacks about the incident.

“Florence please stop this! Just stop!” Flora cried.

“You know what? Fuck you Flora. I can't believe we're twins, it's disgusting cause we look alike. I can't have someone who looks like me but is so fucking daft, if you like support all these upcoming fraudsters, I'll still find a way to bring them down.”

“If you would excuse me I have serious business to do.” She raised the crowbar in her hand about to strike the car but someone pushed her, causing her to land on the floor.

And that someone was me.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM?!!” She screamed aggressively at me as she stood up from the floor.

Now everyone had their eyes on us ─ literally.

“Look I'm sorry about my dad ruining your goals, I'm really sorry and I might not understand the pain you're going through but I'm really sorry.” I say with tears dropping from my eyes.

“You're very right, you don't understand the shit I'm going through.” Florence moves closer to me. “You and your useless father ruined my life.”

Only if she knew he wasn't my real father, but I decided to stay mute.

“Mrs Chinaza is coming!” Someone yelled in the crowd of students watching the drama.

Everyone left the parking lot and started running. Derrick grabbed my hand and led me out of there.

After a very long and drama filled day, Derrick still fulfilled his promise by taking me to his house to see his sister.

After he parked the car, we both got down and he escorted me to the front door.

He rang the doorbell and it was opened my the arrogant housemaid. On seeing me her eyes widened but she composed herself when she noticed Derrick was here too.

“Good afternoon sir and MA.” She referred to me as ma not forgetting to stress it.

“What have I told you about calling me sir, Kamsiyona?” Derrick says with a raised brow.

“Sorry, s— I mean, Derrick,” I stammer, correcting myself quickly.

He waves it off like it’s not worth the energy. “Forget it. Is Daphne home?”

“She’s in her room,” I reply.

Without another word, he gestures for me to follow. I trail behind him as we head up the stairs.

We stop in front of a purple door with a bold red sign that screams: DO NOT DISTURB.

I glance at Derrick, silently asking for some kind of explanation. He just rolls his eyes, unimpressed, and pushes the door open anyway.

On opening the door, I was greeted with the smell of cocoa butter and drugs, then a little girl about 12 to 13years on the bed drawing. Her body was covered with red marks, bruises any sort of injury you could think of.

My heart broke at the sight of her, no child should go through this.

She notices us and continues drawing like nothing happened.

“Daphne I told you that you were expecting a visitor today.” Derrick speaks obviously not impressed by his sister's attitude. “Why did you put that sign there?”

“I put that sign there so that I wouldn't be disturbed duh?” Her little voice speaks. “And any visitor that won't stop my pain can as well go to hell.”

She looked at me directly in the eye on saying the last statement.

“Daphne that isn't fair.” Derrick says.

“Do you actually know what's not fair?” She asks. “I can't go to school, I can't see my friends and I can't go out to explore the world because my brother is a COWARD. He can't fight, he's just weak. IS IT WHEN I FINALLY DIE THAT YOU'LL COME TO YOUR SENSES!!!

“You're not going to die, we can do something about this.” I find myself saying.

“What can we do madam?” She directs the question at me.

“We can report to the police and take this case to court, what he's doing to you is child abuse. He can't walk around freely on the streets knowing the kind of monster he is.”

“That's actually a great idea sweetheart, but a certain coward won't agree with you. ”

I looked at Derrick who seemed hesitant with the idea.

“Is there something wrong Derrick?” I asked him but he just stayed silent.

“Just forget about it Sonia, I just want to die a peaceful death you know, not dying out of punishment, but we can't always get what we want now can we?” She said it like it was a normal thing.

I looked at Derrick who was seriously avoiding eye contact.

“Sonia I think we should go. ” Those words just left me confused. Didn't we just get here?

But I still left anyway.

“Sonia I'm really sorry, I'll think about your offer. ”

He looked scared and afraid of something, something that might kill and destroy him.

“It's okay Derrick but seriously think about your sister. Like she said, she wants to die a peaceful death.”

“I understand, I promise to fight for her.” He says reassuringly.

“Thanks for coming Sonia, I love you.” He smiles genuinely at me and pulls me into a hug.

“I love you too Derrick.”
