Beep! Beep! Beep!

Sonia slammed her hand on the alarm, silencing it on the third beep.
It hit her like cold water-today wasn't Sunday. Or Saturday.
Midterm break was over. School had returned, loud and proud.

Her mood flipped-sleepy to sour, just like that.

With a groan, she dragged herself to the window and yanked the curtains open. Sunlight poured in, bright and unapologetic, mocking her Monday blues.

She looked up at her bed and noticed the bed had a red stain on it.

Please don't tell me that's what I think it is?

She looked at her light pink nightwear and noticed blood was on it, the front, the back, it was everywhere.

Father in heaven no be small thing wey I dey go through o.

She removed the stained white bedspread and put a black one. She put the stained bedspread in the laundry basket with the intention of taking it to the dry cleaners when she got back from school.

When Sonia was done showering she put on her uniform, her socks and her black loafers on. She styled her boho braids in a bun and laid the edges to perfection before applying her lipgloss.

She decided not to eat anything sweet for breakfast because of her period, so she had fried yam and egg sauce.

Sonia's mum isn't back from the trip yet so she has to make due of the money her mum left. So she started calculating what to do with the money.

When she was done with her breakfast she carried her bag and left the house. On making her way towards the gate she met a familiar car parked out front.

The tinted windows rolled down revealing a very charming boy that Sonia couldn't stop thinking about.

"Derrick hi?" She looked around awkwardly not meeting his eyes.

"Come on in let's go together."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"It's the way you think I'll listen to you. Enter inside here joor." He opened the door for her gesturing for her to come inside.

"If you like be doing like you don't want it." Her subconscious chided.

"Where's your driver?" She asked, noticing he's the one behind the wheels today.

"He's not here, I'm the one driving."

"Can you even drive?"

"As how na? I can drive na abi you're scared that I'll crash into something and we all blow up and die." He jokes.

"First of all Godforbid and second of all you aren't even legal to drive yet." She stated.

"Okay, but for your information seventeen is actually the new eighteen. I just turned seventeen October so I'm technically and adult."

"Let's just go to school abeg, your sense of reasoning makes people with dyslexia look smart." She jabbed at him.

"Wow, so you've started sharpening your mouth now. No problem 1-0."

They both burst into laughter before he ignited the engine and drove out of the estate.

As they reached the gates of the school─ they could see students coming roaming all over the place, catching up and probably talking about how their holidays went.

When Derrick parked, he gathered his things and opened the door for Sonia to come out.

This gesture made some students stop to look, point, take pictures and gossip about it.

Derrick was always used to this type of attention, so he didn't reason any of them at all. Sonia on the other hand has been the target of attention since day one but she's still not used to it.

Derrick noticed her uncomfortable state held her hand reassuringly, escorting her to the school block.

As they made their way through the senior blocks, more eyes turned to them. Everyone had come out to see what was going on, eyes fixed on them like prey waiting to be captured by a predator.

But through the chaos, he still held her hand, that comforted Sonia a little bit making her forget people were watching her in the first place.

As they reached their class they met Empress at the door on the classroom. She was folding her arms and tapping her feet like she has been waiting for their arrival for the longest time.

Once Empress noticed them, she walked towards them ─well towards Derrick to be precise, but not forgetting to hit her shoulder on Sonia's.

Sonia winced and shot Empress a sharp glare, feeling the intentional shove. She had always been the type to turn the other cheek, but this was starting to feel like a pattern. Derrick, oblivious to the subtle tension, flashed a little smile as Empress stopped right in front of him.

"You're late," Empress said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness, her eyes never leaving Derrick's.

Sonia clenched her fists, trying to remain calm. She wasn't about to let Empress ruin her day-not today.

She was already on her period, she doesn't need another bullshit.

"Next time, try walking straight," Sonia said, her tone flat. "You don't have to knock into someone's shoulder just to get attention."

"Are you talking to me bitch?" Empress retaliated moving closer to Sonia unprovoked.

"That's enough, Empress what do you want?" Derrick asks.

"I just want to greet my friend, aren't we friends again?" She touches his arm in a seductive way making Sonia cringe in disgust.

Is she for real?

Derrick pulled his arm away from her.

"We have to go, the assembly is soon going to commence." He excuses and grabs Sonia's hand, leading her to the classroom.

That single gesture alone sent a wave of fury crashing through Empress. It was bad enough she'd been hearing whispers-rumours that they were a thing-but seeing it? Live and in HD? Nah. That one touched her soul.

If he was really dating Sonia, then someone better call security, because Empress was ready to raise hell and spill blood. Period.

"Now that we've reached the midpoint of the term, I expect a significant improvement in behavior and academic focus from everyone. This is especially crucial for SS3 students-your midterm results were disappointing, and frankly, this is not the performance expected of students preparing for external examinations. If this is the energy you're bringing to your finals, then there's serious cause for concern. It's time to sit up, take responsibility, and rise to the challenge. You still have time to turn things around, but that starts now."

"I believe in your potential, but belief alone won't carry you-your actions will. Let's finish this term strong."

All the students applauded for Mrs Chinaza as she delivered her back to school speech except SS3 students, they were pissed at the fact she had to call them out for not doing well.

Like what did she gain?

After all the teachers finished giving their boring speeches, they took the closing prayer and the students headed to their classes.

Sonia wasn't in a good mood at all. The dull ache in her lower abdomen was slowly turning into sharp, stabbing cramps, and to make matters worse, classes had barely started. She winced, shifting uncomfortably in her seat, her head cradled on the cold wooden desk like it could absorb some of her frustration.

She flinched when a small object landed on her head - not hard, but annoying enough to snap her out of her pity party. Blinking in confusion, she sat up and scanned the classroom. Everyone was either scribbling in their notebooks, chatting in low voices, or staring at the board like nothing happened. Creepy.

She decided to ignore it, must've been an accident or something, some of her classmates are just naturally mad.

But it wasn't even up to ten seconds when she felt an object hitting her again, this time even more sharper and heavier. She looked down where the object landed close to her feet ─ a nail.

Who the fuck in their right senses would do this? She looked around again only to find Empress and some girls laughing and pointing in her direction.

Of course it's them.

Even with the pain going on in her lower abdomen she grabbed the nail and still managed to walk over to their direction.

As she got closer to them, they all stopped laughing and tried to act neutral.

But Sonia wasn't having it with them this morning. She threw the nail at Empress forcefully on her head.

"Are you mad?!" Empress shot up from her chair, clutching her head like she'd just survived an assassination attempt. "What's your problem? I could've gotten injured!"

Sonia couldn't even care less about what would've happened to her. "So you that was displaying your extreme foolishness and stupidity by throwing the nail around didn't think it would injure someone?"

"Stop acting like a drama queen, it was just a harmless prank." Sarah, one of the biggest idiots Sonia has seen in her life said.

Sonia didn't even bother to answer the she goat whose foundation is lighter than her skin complexion, instead she focused on her main target.

"Don't try me this morning, I'm honestly not in the mood." As she proceeded to walk back to her seat, a sharp object touched her neck again, this time leaving a mark. Sonia touched her neck and saw it was bleeding.

Everyone in the class stopped whatever activity they had going on to stare at them.

Sonia was still in shock as she looked at the blood on her hands, then she stared back at an unapologetic Empress.

Oh, it's on bitch!!!

Without thinking twice, Sonia lunged at Empress and stab her hand with the nail. Empress screamed with pain. Without waiting for her to recover Sonia slapped her and grabbed her braids tightly.

People in the class aware of how this was going to end brought out their phones and started videoing.

Empress couldn't even try to fight her back because a bloody nail was on her hand.

Sonia on the other hand was out of control, slapping, kicking, punching, biting, just name it. She looked like she wasn't going to stop anytime soon. She pushed her to the floor and delivered hot slaps everywhere on her body.

"Sonia stop!!!" She felt strong hands trying to drag her away from Empress but she remained determined to kill Empress.

After much pulling, Derrick was able to drag Sonia away.

"Let me at that bitch, she's been begging for this smoke!" Sonia hissed through clenched teeth, her chest rising and falling in ragged, furious breaths. Her fists were balled so tight her knuckles had gone white, and fire danced behind her eyes like she was ready to burn the whole room down.

Derrick stepped in front of her, placing firm hands on her shoulders. "Sonia, breathe. You need to calm down," he said, voice low but tense -like he knew one wrong move and she'd snap.

But Sonia shook her head, her voice trembling with rage. "Nah, I've been calm. I've been calm ever since I stepped foot in the godforsaken school. I've took a lot of nonsense but today's not that day I'll let things go, I must fight!"

"I know, but you need to calm down, this isn't worth it. You might get into a lot of trouble for what you've done right now."

Sonia looked at Empress lying on the floor, with a nail on her skin bleeding excessively. That's when the realization hit Sonia ─ she would have killed Empress.

She would've killed her...

Tears all of a sudden started coming at full speed from her eyelids. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it, people are just provoking me, I honestly was just on my own. I'm sick and tired of this place, I just want to go home."

"It's okay I'll take you home, just please go and calm yourself down alright, I'll be with you in a second."

Sonia nodded and went outside to get some fresh air. As she stood there she saw Derrick rushing out of the class with Empress in his arms, he headed towards the direction of the clinic. Sonia felt bad ten times more, she couldn't believe she was the one who wanted to that for a second.

𖣎𖣎𖣎𖣎𖣎𖣎

After catching her breath for a couple of minutes, she spotted Derrick coming back from the clinic, she straightened up.

"How is she doing?" Sonia asked immediately he reached where she stood.

"She's doing great, although I had to convince the nurse it was just a little accident, Empress also didn't want to take the matter to the school authorities so we're all good." He convinced her. "So should I still take you home?"

She gave a small nod.

Forty minutes later they were at Sonia's gate.

"If you need anything... anything at all, call me, alright?" He says softly, his eyes lingering on Sonia as she gets out of the car.

"I will... I promise. And thank you... for everything." Her fingers linger on the door handle before she looks back at him. "I'll see you tomorrow at school," she adds, her eyes searching his face like she's trying to say something she can't put into words.

He watched as she entered inside before he drove off.

On getting to the door Sonia noticed something, her mum's car was in the compound and also a black Prado Jeep. She also noticed a pair of black designer shoes on the floor.

She shook it off, thinking it's probably her imagination playing tricks on her.

On getting the keys to unlock the door from her bag, she noticed the door wasn't even locked in the first place.

What the actual hell?

She opened the door and froze. Her eyes widened as the most traumatizing scene unfolded before her.

Clothes were strewn carelessly across the floor, a chaotic trail leading to the tangled mess that was her mum and a man she didn't recognize. They were so consumed by their... activity, they didn't even notice her standing there, mouth agape and soul leaving her body.

She blinked. Once. Twice. A third time.

Still there.

Her voice caught in her throat, but she managed a sharp cough-loud and pointed enough to slice through the heavy air.

Her mum stood up from the laps of the man she was riding with full speed. "Sonia?" She calls out surprised. "You came back early."

She began gathering her clothes one by one frantically.

Sonia on the other hand was having a staring contest with the man. It was no other man.

It was her dad.

"I thought you had a business meeting in Lagos?" Sonia asks her mother with folded hands trying hard not to cry.

She was not in the mood for another drama, she just recovered from the other one that took place some hours ago.

"Yes but we finished early so I decided to come back." Her mum avoided eye contact with her.

"Is that so? So what's he doing here?" She asked the unanswered question.

"Sonia look," her mum took a deep breath. "I think it's time you listen to your fathers side of the story and stop acting like you're okay, I know that you're struggling emotionally and psychologically. "

"Wow mum, thanks for noticing I'll tell igwe to organize small award for you."

"This isn't a joke Sonia, I'm serious here, you've been out of character these days."

"Me too I'm not joking, I'm serious when I say I honestly don't want to see this man again. He ruined my life, I can't even go anywhere without people reminding me that I'm a daughter of a fraudster. So he wants to come and do what?" She says unapologetically.

"Sonia, he's still your father."

"I don't want to hear any of it. You all need to just leave me alone!"

A beat of silence.

Then his voice, low... almost guilty.

"Sonia... I'm not your real dad."

The room froze. Her heartbeat thundered. The world stopped spinning.

She blinked-once. Twice. But the truth didn't go away.

Everything she thought she knew... was a lie.

And just like that, the ground beneath her cracked.
