You know that feeling, the feeling you get when you haven't seen someone you love for a long time and when you eventually see them you run towards them and give them a suffocating hug.
Well mine was different.
I didn't feel that way at all. I just felt like the broken girl I was three years ago.
I didn't know how to feel as my dad โ who was in prison for three years sat before me.
He looked older, his beard which was always neatly trimmed looked overgrown and unkept. His eyes that were now full of life looked absolutely dead.
My legs started wobbling that I he'd onto the rail of the staircase for support.
"Sonia."
He called, his voice even sounded different. His once smooth and alluring voice now sounded hoarse.
He slowly stood up from the two seated chair he was sitting down on and looked at me.
"Sonia my daughter, it's really you. You look a lot bigger now." He said as he started coming towards me with slow strides. I deliberately took a step backwards as he approached me.
He must have noticed my body language because his happy face was changed to a sad demeanor.
I slowly turned to mum. "Mum what's going on?"
My mum looked like she was in a very tight spot right now. When she didn't answer I continued, "I thought we both agreed that I didn't want to see him just yet."
"Please let's just listen to what he has to say." My mum pleaded with sad eyes but I was having none of it.
"My child..." My dad touched my arm but I yanked it off his grip like he was fire burning my skin.
"I can't do this." I ran up to my room and banged it so hard that I wondered how the hinges of the door didn't break.
I sat down on my messy bed still thinking about what just happened downstairs. Maybe I was dreaming, my dad wasn't out of jail. How was it even possible he got out?
I started thinking of the possibilities that I've started hallucinating.
My phone beeped next to me. It was a text from Amaka, I totally forgot we were talking before my mum called me down to witness my worst nightmare.
The text read; which crime did you now commit that your mum doesn't want us to talk again?
I ignored her message and found myself in a certain boy's DM.
Can I come over?
I texted and watched as two grey ticks showed indicating he has seen it. I watched as the once two grey ticks turned blue, and he began typing.
Yeah sure.
A small grin appeared on my face as I read the text. I dropped my phone on my bed and made my way to the closet situated opposite my bed. I opened it and brought out clothes to wear.
After much contemplating I settled for a black maxi skirt and and a white oversized baggy top.
I took fast strides towards the door, but then I slowed down when I remembered the situation that happened not so long ago.
After standing, moping at the door aimlessly I slowly opened it. I tiptoed towards the stairs and descended it. As I got down, I was greeted with a quiet and eerie living room.
I sighed in relief, I was expecting to see my mum and the man I call my father but I didn't, I was about to open the door and leave the house when a voice stopped me.
"And where do you think you're going to young lady?" My mum queried me immediately as I turned and saw her scrutinizing me.
"To a friends place." I replied.
"What was that nonsense act that you displayed here Sonia, why did you act like the man you saw wasn't your father at all?" My mum started her ranting.
Well I expected it anyway.
"Mum," I paused as I took in a deep breath, heaven knows I'm just tired. "Please let's have this conversation later."
"No! We must have this conversation now. Only heaven knows what's gotten into you lately. You act like you're a shadow of your former self-"
"THAT'S BECAUSE I AM!"
Tears were now threatening to spill through my eyelids but I remained strong and not let them fall.
"Oh, what were you thinking? That sending me to a new school will suddenly change everything?" I questioned rhetorically.
"I'm sorry to burst your bubble but no, it just made everything a million times worst. I was fine being homeschooled and then all of a sudden I'm in a school were a day can't pass without them creating a rumour about me."
"And you know the very good part about going to this school?" I chuckled bitterly. "I ran into a girl who is also a victim of dad's fraudulent activities who is partnering with a girl who hates me to make sure I go down."
"I never knew-"
"Of course you never knew, can I please go now." I pointed towards the direction of the door.
"Sonia please."
"Bye mother." That was the last thing I said before closing the door. I leaned on the door and took a deep breath, allowing the fresh air from outside to hit me on my face.
I needed to escape from here and I know the perfect place to go.

"Good evening."
I greeted the maid who opened the door. It was the same maid who I met the first time I came here and she had a scowl on her face.
"How can I help you?" She asked rudely, hands placed akimbo on her waist.
"I'm here to see Derrick." I replied with a smile, God knows I really want to pluck her eyes out so she'll stop rolling them.
"And why do you want to see him? The last time I checked he didn't keep prostitutes as friends."
Ehn?
God abeg, make I no just kill pesin nine months like this. I hope it's not me she called prostitute?
"I'm sorry but not every girl you see here is like your mother." I clapped back with a smile.
The wicked grin she had on her face dissipated as soon as the words came out from my mouth.
She was about to clap back but a voice I would recognize anywhere stopped her.
"Kamsiyona what's going on here?" The sexy voice which could make any woman's ovaries burn โ including mine spoke up. He was wearing a white tee with black joggers.
The young lady, which I later found out her name was Kamsiyona started fiddling with her fingers. "Nothing sir, she just said she was here to see you and since she didn't look familiar I decided to interrogate her."
She had a faux smile placed on her face as if she was sorry about the whole situation. It's not only to interrogate, mumu.
"But if she wasn't familiar do you think the security would have let her in?"
She felt silent and started fiddling with her fingers again.
You no fit talk abi, you fit shout abi, you no fit you no fit. E shock you!
I sang the song in my head as I was trying so hard to suppress my laughter. See how they've humbled her.
"Please next time, leave the interrogations as you call it to the security. That's not your job in this household. Understood?"
She nodded, bowed her head and left the room.
"I'm sorry about her. Are you okay?"
"Of course I'm not fine." I replied to his question.
His face softened as he stretched his hand towards me. I accepted his soft hand and held it tightly. He led me to the stairs and then his room. His room smelt like him and looked the same as I saw it when I came for the first time.
He settled on a dark blue bean bag while I just stood there awkwardly as he watched me.
"Would you like to talk about it?" He asked.
"I don't even know where to start from, this whole thing is just complicated." I said, as I settled down on another white bean bag next to him.
"You can start at your own pace, no rush."
I sighed and turned to face him. He gave me this look that made me feel calm.
"It's my dad, he's back."
ย "Oh, that's great?" He gave me this questioning look that says 'is this really your problem'.
"It's just complicated, it's been so long I've seen him and seeing him today just brought back bad memories from the past." I explained to him.
"I understand how you feel, it may be hard for you to warm up to him, but remember he's still your dad."
"I just don't know how to feel, I even fought my mum because of this and I feel so terrible. I feel like such a bad daughter, my mum has done nothing but be there for me since this whole incident happened and this is how I repay her. I'm sure she hates me and never wants to see my face again."
I lamented at once as tears spilled out from my eyes.
Derrick sighed, stood up from the bean bag and moved closer to me. He cleaned my tears and entwined our fingers together.
"Listen to me." He pulled my face so that I was facing his direction.
"You're not a bad daughter, you're just a girl who's battling with a lot of things and learning to heal. It's understandable if you don't want to talk to your father right now. But I just want you to know that you'll surely overcome all this. You're a very smart and beautiful girl, you'll figure something out."
His words made me see him in a new light, how can he just this fine specimen utter such beautiful words from his mouth.
"Thanks for the words, I really appreciate it." I smiled genuinely at him.
"Anytime." He said and then engulfed me in a warm hug which did things to my tummy.
As soon as we broke the hug, he stared deeply into my eyes and I was lost for a moment.
I suddenly regained my composure and stood up from the bean bag.
"Bye, thanks for the advice." Without waiting for him to say anything I slammed the door and made my way out of there.
As I descended the stairs and got closer to the sitting room, I saw the maid whose name I remembered to be Kamsiyona just sitting on the couch glaring at me.
I don't know what this one's problem is but she should drink tap water abeg.
"Like father like daughter." Was all she said before leaving the room not forgetting to roll her eyes and hiss.
I decided not to let anything spoil my mood so I just ignored her and left the house.
I was about boarding a taxi when an unknown number messaged me.
Unknown Number
Stay away from Derrick you bitch! Don't make me do something that will make you regret taking my man.
