IV. Bruises and Broken Rights
-Present-
***
Adam stared at the stark and cold metal walls of his prison cell and ran a hand over the empty gun shaped hole in his belt, where his gun had been hidden before he had pulled it out.
After he had shot Sendak, galra soldiers immediately had flocked into the room and dragged him into the cell.
He hadn't gone with them easily though, putting up a fight just like he had done before, but the sheer numbers of the soldiers and his limited amount of ammunition overcame him.
They had taken away his small gun and had thrown him violently inside the cell before the door was slammed in his face. After several hours of trying to escape, it was obvious the only chance he had of escape was when one of the soldiers decided to open the door.
Adam winced as he rotated his arm and stood up. He was sporting several bruise marks and a black eye from the intense and unmatched fight.
His glasses had also been lost in the battle, smashed and broken by the gunshots and fists.
He wished more then anything he had been smart enough to not go solo on this mission, but at the same time he was relieved he didn't have to worry about anyone else's life being put in danger. It was probably better that only his life was at risk this way.
Running a hand over the sealed door, Adam tried to imagine Shiro somewhere out there.
Alive in a cell hopefully, or better yet, still free from the hands of this cruel race.
He thought back to when Shiro had crashed down onto earth in a strange ship a couple of miles away from the Garrison.
Once he had been attained, he wouldn't stop talking about the galra and how they were after something.
And then... Adam remembered, Shiro had disappeared with a bunch of cadets in a giant mechanical lion. That somehow could fly.
After that, no one knew what had happened to the students, let alone Shiro.
Whatever had happened to them, especially Shiro, if he had been killed...
Adam couldn't even think about that. All he knew was that if that was the case, he'd make every single one of them pay for taking his life.
Suddenly the door whizzed open and he was grabbed roughly by two muscular soldiers, his arms forced behind him as he was shoved down the faintly glowing purple hallways.
Adam held back a cry of pain as he walked forward, trying to map out his environment as he was led to a new unknown location.
"Keep moving!!", the soldier ordered gruffly pushing his head down roughly, "Don't even think about it."
Adam has no choice but to comply as he made his way into a creepy room filled with shelves which were covered in books, jars and strange items.
Strange vials glowed a purplish black along the room and cloaked and masked aliens stared at him as he passed. There heads turned at an awkward and slow angle as he was forced to his knees in the center of the room.
"Here he is.", the second soldier announced to a skinny figure which had their back to them.
Adam watched as the figure stopped whatever it was doing, the crackling and purple light coming to an abrupt halt.
The alien then turned around, who appeared to be a female, her long white hair draped over her shoulders along with an intricate dark cloak.
Red markings ran over her yellow eyes and cheeks and her hands were long and witchlike.
He tried to back away as she neared him, his instincts screaming at him to get away but the guards held him fast.
Grabbing his chin, she looked at him like an animal before looking up at the soldiers, "So he's the one who tried to kill Emperor Sendak...", she mused, her voice interested.
"Yes Haggar.", the soldier bowed, a fist over his heart, "He only had this weak primitive gun.", the soldier said pulling out Adam's gun from a bag.
Adam watched as it was handed over to her, with her still holding his face, before she disintegrating it with a pulse of energy from her free hand after only glancing at it for a moment.
He stared at where the gun had used to be... had she just used magic?? Did magic somehow exist within these aliens?
Adam's head spun as he truly realized how dangerous these aliens were.
Not only did they have a strong military, but they could use magic as well and had high tech weapons that could qualify as magic too.
If Earth was ever attacked, Adam knew with dead certainty they stood no chance.
"Interesting...", she said letting go of him finally, "You may leave me now.", Haggar waved at the guards.
Adam was released from their hold and right as he was going to break for it he was frozen in place as he heard the two guards exit.
The door shut behind them with an echoing thud. Making Adam feel even more trapped then he was in his unmovable state.
"You're probably wondering why I asked you to be brought over to me.", Haggar said looking at him, her hand extended over him with glowing energy, "Well, all your questions will soon be made clear.
I'm giving you the chance to answer me and if you don't comply, there will be punishment. I will also decide to give you information on return, a simple exchange. Attempts on my life or trying to run away will be met with even worse consequences.", she warned.
She then lowered her hand, giving him the freedom to move again as he fell to the ground from his awkward frozen position.
Adam wasted no time as he scrambled back up to his knees and feet, taking a couple of steps back from the strange woman.
"What do you want with me?", he demanded as he glanced around the room for any advantages, "And what did you do to Takashi Shirogane, Sam and Matt Holt, Lance McClain, Pidge and Hunk?"
Despite her warnings of punishment, Adam wasn't planning on remaining complacent longer then necessary. He could see the masked aliens in the background, forming a loose circle around both him and Haggar.
Gritting his teeth, he shifted his weight, ready to spring out of the way if necessary.
She ran a finger over her chin as she looked back at him, "What I want is you to answer this— who are you and why are up here?
And as for the people you named, I have done nothing much to them. They are far out of my reach... even the champion is no longer within my hold.", she said making her hand light up with purple energy, "I'm guessing you know them?"
He narrowed his eyes, "Yes. I know them... some are my coworkers and the others are my students. And I'm up here to find and retrieve them.
What did you mean by champion though?"
"What is your name human? You didn't answer all my questions.", she replied her voice irritated.
Adam stood straight, his hands curled into fists, "My name is Adam Wolf, you witch! And I'm here to find the people you've taken away!! So where are they? I'm done with you and your race!!", he yelled.
The cloaked beings floated forward but Haggar held up her hand, "Leave it.", she ordered as they went back to their original position.
Looking at him, she sighed, "Funny you say it's my race when I'm not even galra. Don't go labeling things you don't understand human.
But moving on from that tiny fact, if you were listening I told you they are out of my reach and have been. The thing is they've, well Voltron, has vanished. I can't help you in that even if I wanted to.
And the one I call champion is who you and your kind call Shiro. I once had a connection to him, but now it is lost.", she summoned an orb which projected images in it and held it out for Adam to see, "He was my finest creation. Strong, brutal and cunning... harnessing a connection with the black lion as well. But I lost that all along with my son when that damned halfbreed Keith ruined everything."
Images played on the screen showing Shiro taking down a giant alien with a torch weapon, then flashing to one's with him flying a black lion, and another with the former cadets of the Garrison.
It then showed Shiro fighting Keith, who Adam remembered had run out once Shiro had been proclaimed dead by the media, and the beast like qualities of the Shiro he saw on the orb rattled him to the bone.
Face pale and angry, he turned to Haggar, finally pulling his eyes away from each flashing scene of Shiro, "What do you mean by creation.", he spat, "Takashi is a human being!! Why, why am I seeing him doing these things and why..."
He struggled for the right words as she looked at him with what seemed like sympathy.
"I'm guessing you didn't know or ever figure out that the galra's technology is far more advanced then your primitive weapons and 'advanced discoveries'. There is by far, more power then you could ever dream of here... and Shiro was one to fall victim to it.", she explained, "We experimented on him and made clones of the man. Most of which aren't and weren't suitable, but I had a golden one which did the job and almost got rid of the Paladin Keith."
"WHY?! Why would you clone a human being? You can't do that!! That... that's completely wrong!! That goes completely against human rights!!"
"Your rights. Not ours.", Haggar said calmly.
Adam could barely hold back his rage, "How can you be so cold and cruel?!
And why are you so determined to kill Keith and the rest of the people who are in Voltron?!"
She glared at him, "Because they stood in the way of the Galra Empire!", she snarled, "Because they took my husband and son away from me and tried to tear apart everything that they had worked for!!
And destroying them would have made the rest of the rebels finally lose hope!"
He stepped back, feeling unsafe as he felt dark energy radiate off of her, "You speak in the past tense... as if they don't anymore..."
Haggar ran a hand over her face, "You don't listen very well do you? I said they've vanished.
Voltron fought my son Lotor when he opened up the quintessence field, and once they went in they never came back out. They've been in there for almost eight phoebs."
Quintessence? Phoebs??
Adam didn't understand many of the terms she was using but he could tell enough that it was bad and they had been gone for a long time.
He shifted uncomfortably, suddenly wondering why she was giving away this information so freely.
Wasn't he the enemy?
Unless she was trying to play some twisted mind games on him...
Adam shook his head slightly, trying to clear his thoughts and think rationally.
He might as well put his willing host to use, "So just to be clear, Shiro and the others are in this weapon named Voltron, and they've disappeared a long time ago in some strange time pocket or something... and you hate them because they've been thwarting your bloodthirsty rule over the whole universe. Am I correct?"
"I don't think I've ever met such an uneducated being before...", she said her face clearly annoyed, "But yes, I suppose that's close enough to the point."
Haggar then waved her arm and a hidden door opened on Adam's left, a dark expanse filling the hole in the wall, "I could explain everything out here, but I think it's better to explain some things in a that room instead; plus I want to know more about you Adam Wolf."
As she said his name, chills went up his back as he looked between the mystery room and the lab.
It wasn't like had much of a choice...
Besides, being alone with her would give him a sliver of a chance when they were one on one.
"Fine. Just one question, WHY??", he relented taking a step towards the new door's direction.
Haggar gazed at him for a moment before she ran a finger over her chin again, "Because you interest me...", she replied.
Adam felt really helpless all the sudden as he felt those strange eyes bore into him, trying to read his soul, "..why...?"
"I'm sure you'd rather be talking then being experimented on. So move.", she ordered, her voice brisk, "We'll finish our conversation in there."
