I walk down the hall from lunch, following Kinkajou and Qibli.
Moon is inside the girls cave, and I feel my heart speed up a little. Moon does that to me.
Kinkajou gives her a look, obviously waiting for something. Moon catches Qibli's eye, and I feel my heart start to sink. There is no way Moon will choose me over Qibli. Then she looks over at me, and I feel a jolt, like a spark. It must be my imagination.
Kinkajou clears her throat, and Moon just grins, taking an inkpot and scroll and writing something down. She slides it over to Kinkajou, and I only just manage to read the words 'Wait & see.' before Kinkajou rips the note into pieces. Moon winces, but Kinkajou only glares, obviously mad at Moon for something. I'm confused; Kinkajou has never been like this with Moon. Kinkajou storms out, and I shoot Moon a questioning look. She just shrugs.
I leave the cave, heading across the hall to the boys' cave. A scroll tied with a blue ribbon sits on the floor in the middle of the cave, with another tied with a tan ribbon beside it. Figuring the one with the blue ribbon is for me, I carefully open the scroll and read the contents.
Dear Winter,
I'm supposed to choose between you and Qibli, and I don't think I've ever faced a harder decision. Both of you are so great, and I don't want my decision to ruin our friendship. But I have to choose. At first, I thought that Qibli would be the one. He was sweet, kind, funny, and I knew how much he cared. Little did I know, the dragon that I should have thought of was right in front of me the whole time. When I first met you, I thought you were some stuck-up prince who only cared about himself, but now that I know you, and how much you truly care about me, I know what I have to do. If I had to choose tomorrow, I would choose you. Because you are my true one and only.
Love,
Moon
I feel my heart skip a beat. This must be some joke from Qibli, or Kinkajou! How can Moon, the most wonderful, beautiful dragon in the world, choose me? I read the note again. It's written in Moon's tidy handwriting.
"What's that?"
I turn to see Qibli behind me. Oh no, I think. Qibli. "Nothing," I say, gesturing to the scroll with the tan ribbon. "That's for you," I tell him, rolling up my scroll and shoving it behind me.
Qibli picked up the tan scroll and read it, his eyes widening as he read through.
Scrambling to leave, I pick up my scroll and begin to walk away when Qibli speaks. "She chose you," he says, his voice choked.
I nod. Qibli hangs his head. "I knew she would," he whispers.
I turn. "Why?" I ask, curious.
"Because I saw the way she looked at you today," he whispers. "She's never looked at me like that."
I sit down and slide the scroll over to Qibli. "It says that the decision she had to make was the hardest of her life." I say, in an attempt to comfort my friend.
Qibli smiles sadly. "Oh yeah?"
"Yeah," I reply.
"You deserve her." Qibli returns the scroll. "You're perfect for each other."
I smile slightly, coming to sit by my friend. "You're perfect for someone too," I say, nudging him. "You just haven't found them yet."
Qibli grins, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. I leave him there, heading to the girls cave to see Moon.
She is alone inside, sitting with her tail wrapped around her talons. "Hey," she says, looking up briefly before glancing back down to her talons.
I walk in. "Hey," I reply. "I found your note." I display the scroll in my talon.
Moon smiles nervously. "And?"
I take a step closer. "And I choose you, too."
I twine her tail with mine and sit down next to her. Moon sighs with relief and leans into me. I place a wing over her, feeling that is was how it is meant to be.
