at eight years old, maren began sneaking out of the house while her parents were away. often, she didn't go far, usually hiding somewhere in the back garden while she waited for her nanny or relative to figure out she was missing. the first couple of times, her mother or father would hurry home to search for her, but once they had discovered her typical hiding spots, they stopped. when she was older, maren continued to sneak out, but would find places to stay and refuse to come home for nights on end, even when her parents would show up to take her home.
the week before the start of her seventh year, maren was bitten after running away from home again—this time because of a particularly nasty fight with her parents, all over her father's newest promotion at work. she hid the bite and it's affects from her parents, fearing they would send her away if they found out. she became distant and withdrawn, thereafter, becoming worse and worse as the term continued and the first full moon approached. remus lupin, who, up until then, had only been a friend of a friend, started to take notice of her erratic behavior. eventually he confronted maren and after some time, they were able to establish some trust around each other's secrets. having remus by her side helped maren cope, and while the first full moon and each the follower still remained terrifying and uncertain, she knew she would never be alone.
