While they flew through the white clouds of New York's skyline, Logan thought about everything he'd been through, everything that led him to this, and all the things he still didn't know about himself. He thought about the day he woke up in a cold cell in the middle of nowhere, all the men he killed that day. He thought about wandering in the snowy forests up on the mountains for days, weeks, alone, until he was found. He thought about her, how much he missed her, and how much he wished things were different, how much he desperately wanted to cancel what happened that day. How much he wanted to forget about everything he went through.

Natasha's words ringed in his head...

"Sometimes it's better to forget."

It was this what he wanted? To just forget everything and start again? With so many gaping holes in his memory, did he really want to add more of them? It would've been so easy, to just forget about it all, to remove all the pain and suffering he went through and start over, as a normal person. To just wipe off all the blood stains tainting his brain's every dark room. To grab the pommel of each and every single door and just close it. To grab the hems of the blinders and rip them off, getting rid of every shadow casted spot of his conscience.

But he couldn't.

For how much he wished it was that easy to break free from his own mind, he couldn't just forget everything. For how in the world would he ever been able to move forward if he did just that? Logan knew very little of his cloudy past, but he could not focus on that, he could not just stare at the empty spots of his memory: he had to move on, learn to accept the unknown things too - for the moment - and keep fighting, keep moving forward no matter what.

As the Quinjet started its descent on New York, the four heroes noticed something up in the sky: a huge intergalactic passage, a portal emanating deep blue energy, generated by the very energy of the Tesseract at the top of Stark Tower. From that space passage came through what they've been warned by Thor against: the Chitauri. Like a swarm of moths, the aliens were attracted by the Tesseract to the Big Apple and, as they flew down Stark Tower, they started attacking the unknowing population on the ground. Tony Stark, Iron Man, was trying to held them off the best he could by shooting his repulsor beams at them as they came out of the portal, but he couldn't do much on his own. As Logan watched the display of violence coming from space, he couldn't but mutter to himself

Logan: "Oh my God..."

As the aircraft kept flying towards the high tower, Natasha contacted Tony on his communicator

Natasha: "Stark, we're heading north east."

Tony's remark came short by

Tony: "What, did you stop for drive-thru? Swing up park, I'm gonna lay 'em out for you."

Just then they spotted Tony flying around his tower, while being followed by another swarm of Chitauri on their small flying aircrafts. They followed him sloppily around the building, as the four heroes flew around another building, ready to intercept and shoot down the aliens following Tony. Logan wasn't appreciating those turns all that much, gripping his seat for dear life, as Clint got the machine gun ready to shoot. As they saw Tony flying by, they started to shoot at the swarm following him, disintegrating them almost instantly. After doing so they kept flying upwards and around Stark Tower, while shooting at the aliens flying by, but suddenly a blast skimmed the right wing of the Quinjet, making the whole aircraft tremble, and also making Logan grip his seat even more tightly. After flying up enough, Clint spotted on his left Thor and Loki fighting on top of the tower, and turned briefly to look at Natasha as he called out to her

Clint: "Nat?"

Natasha looked at what Clint was gazing at and saw the gods as well, as she answered her friend

Natasha: "I see him."

Then they made the Quinjet turn left while floating in the air, they once again got ready to shoot. Having a more clear view of what was ahead of them, both Steve and Logan focused their eyes on the horned deity as he was fighting to death against his brother. And, as Loki saw them too as they were about to shoot at him, Logan's instinct kicked in as he unbuckled his seatbelt and, not caring about his fear of flying, walked fast into the cockpit and told Natasha and Clint

Logan: "Make this thing turn right now!"

But it was too late, as Loki freed himself from the hold his brother had on him and aimed his scepter at the Quinjet, shooting an energy blast. As it was heading towards the left wing, Logan said

Logan: "Oh shit!"

The turbulence caused by the blue energy blast was enough to make Logan grip the wall for support, and Steve to grab hastily the metal bars above him, as the aircraft started descending dangerously to the ground. Clint maneuvered it the best he could to ensure they did a safety landing, and not just crash on the ground. Both Steve and Logan tried to hold on tight, as the unsteady flight made Cap almost lose his grip, and made the Canadian stumble dangerously. They flew down past a building and turned left, but the turn of course wasn't sharp enough as they hit the ledge of another building on their right. At this point Logan, who fell on the ground after that hit, planted his claws on the ground to steady himself and brace for the impact. As they rounded another building, Clint lightly squinted his eyes as his teeth were showing through his lightly parted lips. The high concentration was evident on his face, but he had no panic as he, probably, encountered many dangerous situations like these. Finally, Hawkeye found a place with enough space for the Quinjet to land without hurting any civilian. As the aircraft landed not so graciously on the ground, sliding through the ground and breaking the asphalt, until the building in front of them stopped the vehicle. Both Clint and Natasha quickly unbuckled their seatbelts and Steve, after doing the same, quickly retrieved his shield, ready to jump into battle. But, as they were about to go out, they noticed there was one member missing. As they turned around, they saw Logan kneeling on the ground, his right elbow leaning on his knee, as he looked down while panting hard. Steve, thinking that he was injured, immediately walked closer and asked

Steve: "Logan, what's wrong?"

The Canadian merely lifted his head and looked at the Captain with an unamused look, then he said while still panting

Logan: "Three words."

He raised his hand, with the back side of it directed to Rogers, and listed those three words

Logan: "I. Hate. Flying. Fuck."

At that Clint smirked as he said

Clint: "Those were four."

Logan looked at him and said

Logan: "Do I look like I give a shit?"

After he was able to stand up, the whole group got out of the Quinjet in a run. As they passed all the rubble and the numerous abandoned cars on the street, they glanced up at the tower, with Cap saying

Steve: "We gotta get back up there!"

And with Logan replying

Logan: "No shit, grandpa."

They stopped in the middle of the road, in front of the Central Station, and looked up at the blue portal above Stark Tower. Suddenly, there was a rumble, a surge of energy, as something big was about to come out of it. From the dark depths of black space, lit only by the white shining of the stars, came out of the interdimensional door a gigantic Chitauri monster: a flying worm of some sort with a layer of protective armor on, his alien features were highlighted by his big and sharp teeth as he roared menacingly at the four heroes. It flew down over their heads as they followed its movements. From its sides dozens of Chitauri soldiers ejected out and landed on the buildings' walls nearby, using their claws to attach to them. But some of them went through the windows, breaking in, and started shooting at the running civilians. Steve looked up at the chaos ensuing all over the city as he asked Tony

Steve: "Stark, are you seeing this?"

Tony replied right away

Tony: "Seeing. Still working on believing. Where's Banner, has he shown up yet?"

Steve was pretty confused by his question, the arrival of the doctor was the last thing he was waiting for, as he asked

Steve: "Banner?"

And Tony answered simply

Tony: "Just keep me posted."

As more and more aliens kept popping up and coming down, more and more blaster shots came at the four heroes, who lowered their heads out of instinct. Cap then proceeded to lift his shield up in order to protect himself and the others as best as he could. Right then, Natasha spotted a nice position from which they could've gathered their thoughts and conjure a plan of attack: the side of a taxi. She nodded at Clint, who understood immediately what his friend and colleague was meaning, and the two ran to hide beside that car. Logan and Cap followed them as well when they saw where they were now crouching. As they hid and caught their breaths, Steve turned his head to look at the mess his beloved city was experiencing, while Clint said to him

Clint: "We've got civilians still trapped up there."

But then Cap's and Logan's gazes moved to the a swarm of flying Chitauri soldiers, lead by Loki himself, blasting at the buildings and civilians who ran in every direction possible, as he commented

Steve: "Loki."

Loki and his minions flew by as they blasted everything they saw, making vehicles explode and turn upside down, trapping the civilians in the fire area. Steve watched intently as he commented

Steve: "They're fish in a barrel down there."

Natasha got up on her feet to shoot to a couple of aliens with her dual pistols, while Clint moved to hide against another upside down taxi, ready to shoot an arrow to the enemy. Meanwhile, Logan got ready to run and jump up the taxi in order to attack head first and clear a path for the star spangled hero. Natasha crouched back down as she said to Steve while nodding to him

Natasha: "We got this. It's good. Go."

Steve turned to look at Logan, who nodded at him and said

Logan: "I'm with you, Rogers, let's do this."

Steve nodded back at him with an appreciative smile as he, then, looked at Clint and asked him

Steve: "Do you think you can hold them off?"

At that, Barton turned around his head to look at Captain America and then, with a determined look on his face, he said

Clint: "Captain..."

He then clicked a few buttons on his quiver's handle, activating a mechanism in it that changed the head of the arrow he was about to take, then he finished

Clint: "...it will be my genuine pleasure."

After that he took the arrow and, as he stood up, he quickly shot it to a Chitauri's head, then from the arrow a few bullets were fired, killing instantly the other aliens nearby. Logan then turned to look at Natasha and, while giving her a nod, he said

Logan: "See you later, Black Widow."

And Natasha, reciprocating the nod, said

Natasha: "It'll be a pleasure, Wolverine."

After that exchange, Logan and Steve stood up and started running ahead, while Natasha and Clint covered them. As he started running, the Canadian managed to hear Clint asking Natasha with a confused tone

Clint: "Okay, seriously, I was out for two days, what did I miss?"

But he couldn't make the redhead's reply, as he focused on the task at hand, which was to run as fast as he could to go save lives. He and Steve jumped down the bridge they were on, landing with a roll on a bus that the aliens started to shoot at upon noticing the two heroes. They ran fast and, once at the end of the bus, they jumped down on a car and, as it was sent flying up by an explosion behind it, they performed another jump and landed on the street. They kept running as they jumped up and over the dozens of destroyed vehicles that stood by there, passing by many curious citizens. Cap landed on a police car's roof, right in front of a pair of cops, one young and the other more experienced, clearly the one who gave orders, while Logan landed on another police car's roof nearby. As soon as they arrived there, the chief raised his gun, ready to shoot, but stopped once he realized it was a man that landed on the car, and not an alien. Then, the man found himself to be weirded out when he noticed the two men's clothing choice, but he didn't have time to voice his doubts, as Cap, taking charge of the situation, said to him

Steve: "I need men in these buildings. There are people inside that can run into the line of fire. You take them through the basement or through the subway. You keep them off the streets. I need a perimeter as far back as 39th."

He finished his speech while pointing at the direction the perimeter was needed, while the chief had an incredulous look on his face. A man in a ridiculous red, white and blue costume just came in and gave him orders, while he was in charge, who even was this guy? Since he was very confused, the police chief asked while gesturing at him

Chief: "Why the hell should I take orders from you?"

But to cut off their conversation an explosion behind the two masked heroes ensued and, as the two got up and turned around sharply, the two policemen flinched a few steps back. Suddenly aliens started to attack the two heroes. While Cap exchanged punches and blows with them while protecting himself with his shield, Logan popped out his claws and slayed Chitauri's one after the other, dismembering them ferociously. The fight ended when Cap and Logan, respectively and at the same time, swatted away an alien with the shield and decapitated another with his right hand claws. After that, Logan turned to the man and, showing him his right hand purple blood-tinted claws, snarled at him saying

Logan: "Need any more convincing, bub?!"

The chief didn't answer him as he turned around and addressed his men left and right, giving orders

Chief: "I need men in those buildings, lead the people down and away from the streets." he then reached for his radio on his left shoulder with his left hand and said "I need a perimeter as far back as 39th."

The two heroes exchanged a look and a smirk as they then took off running, so that they could go help out Clint and Natasha with the hordes of Chitauri warriors coming down from the ski. They ran as fast as they could and, finally, they saw in the distance the two spies: Clint shooting arrows with his bow, and Natasha with a Chitaurian staff slashing and shooting energy blasts. The Canadian nodded at the American, who reciprocated the nod before starting to run towards their teammates. Steve jumped on an upside down car and used it as a leverage to jump down in the middle of the fight and, as he landed on the ground, he turned to look at his back right and used his shield to hit the alien coming from that direction. Logan, in the meantime, ran to another direction and jumped on another car, and used it to jump even further high up, launching himself towards a Chitauri that was heading for Cap's other side, and plunged all his claws in his chest with a loud battle cry, killing him instantly. He then got up and, before he could charge towards the other small group who was coming their way with draw weapons, a thunder was heard as, from the ski, three lighting bolts came down and hit the three aliens, incinerating them instantly. Then a wounded Thor came down on the ground, on one knee, supporting himself on an upside down silver car nearby. Logan retracted his claws and helped the god stand up. In the meantime the rest of the group got closer, with Natasha who threw away the alien staff, and Cap asked the Asgardian

Steve: "What's the story upstairs?"

And Thor replied

Thor: "The power surrounding the cube is impenetrable."

Then Tony's voice came from the communicators, as everyone looked up at him flying around, fighting other enemies

Tony: "Thor's right. We got to deal with these guys."

Logan was standing beside Cap as Natasha turned to look at the latter and asked

Natasha: "How do we do this?"

And Steve, still looking in the distance, said

Steve: "As a team."

Thor then looked at Rogers and said

Thor: "I have unfinished business with Loki."

And Clint, who was a bit more distant while attending to his arrows, rolling the heads in the right position, raised his gaze to the god and said

Clint: "Yeah? Well, get in line."

And Logan commented

Logan: "Well said, Old Man: that fucker is going to receive a piece of my mind when I see him."

Before Clint could counter the funny nickname Logan gave him, Steve focused everyone's attention back on the serious matter at hand as he turned to look at Logan and said

Steve: "Save it."

Then he turned to the rest of the group and started walking forward as he organized a plan

Steve: "Loki's going to keep this fight focused on us, and that's what we need." then he looked up as he continued "Without him, these things could run wild." he turned around and gestured up with his both hands, as the group followed his words without missing a single one, saying "We got Stark up top. He's going to need us to-"

But, before he could go on with the plan, they all heard a noise coming from an engine, and Logan sniffed a familiar faint smell of coffee and the faint stink of gunpowder, still partially covered with a cheap version of Davidoff perfume, with the adding of dust to the mix. The Canadian knew, as soon as he piqued up at the scent, that Bruce was back. The whole group turned to look back at a dust covered Bruce Banner parking his motorcycle in the middle of the destroyed road. As he got down, the team walked closer 'till they stood in front of him. He walked a few steps forward and then said while gesturing his surroundings with his hands

Bruce: "So, this all seems horrible."

Natasha, looking straight at him, said

Natasha: "I've seen worse."

At that Logan snickered and commented

Logan: "You sure have an effect on women, Green."

Bruce and Natasha lightly smiled at his remark, but the scientist still felt bad for what happened in the Helicarrier, and said to the redhead

Bruce: "Sorry."

But Natasha, with a faint smirk, stated

Natasha: "No, we could use a little worse."

Logan then asked

Logan: "No 'sorry' for me, Green? You gave me a quite hard blow back there."

But Bruce shrugged with a light smirk on his face as he said

Bruce: "No, you kind of deserved it."

His comment made Logan, and then Bruce too, chuckle, while Nat smiled watching the two men finally getting somewhat along. Then Steve talked to Tony on the communicator

Steve: "Stark, we got him."

Tony's reply came shortly

Tony: "Banner?"

And Steve, not taking his eyes off Bruce, answered

Steve: "Just like you said."

And Tony replied with his usual sarcasm

Tony: "Then tell him to suit up. I'm bringing the party to you."

Just then he flew around a building in the far distance, in front of the whole group, with the giant worm flying right behind him, all the while hitting the said building and making many huge pieces of rubble fall down. The team looked up, while Bruce turned around. Cap exhaled, Thor snarled and got his hammer ready for the battle, and Logan just popped out his claws and smirked. Right then came Natasha's voice, as she sarcastically said

Natasha: "I don't see how that's a party."

And Logan replied with his own sarcasm

Logan: "Leave it to Tony to have the weirdest ideas for parties."

Tony flew down, followed by the giant worm, and then sprinted off to fly around the Stark Tower, right behind the team. The worm snarled loudly at the heroes in the distance as it flew at a low altitude, destroying cars and trees in its path. Bruce looked again at both Cap and Logan and then started to fearlessly walk towards the incoming beast, with Steve calling him out as he said

Steve: "Doctor Banner..."

He walked a few steps forward and then continued

Steve: "Now might be a really good time for you to get angry."

But Bruce, while still walking forward, turned his head around to look at Steve and, with a smirk, he said

Bruce: "That's my secret, Cap..."

He kept walking forward until he came to a stop, then he turned around and said with an unreadable expression

Bruce: "I'm always angry."

Then, as he turned around, he rapidly changed. His muscles grew and his clothes became tighter. The fabric of his dark grey shirt ripped off as his green skin showed more boldly. His rock hard muscles overtook his previous small frame as he turned his head left and brought his right fist back, ready to throw a powerful blow at the monster. And, just when it was about to hit him, he threw one of the most powerful punches he ever did, so hard that the beast actually slowed down more and more, until it stopped. But its long tail wasn't on the same page as the head, as it dangled forward, on the point of falling down on the heroes. The worm's armor clinked and broke on the impact with the green fist, pulling off the monster's skin along the way. And, just then, Iron Man arrived and, after stopping in mid air, said to the Hulk

Tony: "Hold on!"

And then he extended his left arm and, from it, he shot a missile right inside the exposed muscle point on the creature's back. Steve raised his shield, protecting himself and Natasha, Clint crouched down behind a car, Thor raised his arm to shield himself from the incoming blow, and Logan just turned back as he brought his hands behind his head, crossing the claws to protect his skull. Two seconds later, the worm exploded, leaving its pathetic carcass to fall down the bridge they were on, on top of a poor intact taxi, with a huge thud.

After the explosion, the many Chitauri soldiers on the buildings slid down the walls using their sharp claws, then removed their faceplates and screeched loudly and menacingly to the heroes. In response, the Hulk released a powerful and animalistic roar.

And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat.

One by one, they assembled together...

The Giant...

The Archer...

The God...

The Spy...

The Savage...

The Soldier...

The Knight...

The heroes were united.

The Avengers were born.

And then...

The true battle began.

Suddenly, from the portal, three more flying worms came out, and their animalistic snarl caught the attention of the Canadian and the redhead, who looked up at the beasts and called out to the others

Natasha: "Guys."

Then Tony looked up as well and, without wasting a second, said

Tony: "Call it, Captain."

At that point everyone turned around to look at the giant worms, while Cap walked a few steps forward and started to elaborate a plan of attack

Steve: "Alright, listen up. Until we can close that portal, our priority is containment."

He turned around to look at Clint and then started giving orders

Steve: "Barton, I want you on that roof. Eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays."

Steve then turned to look at Tony as he said to him

Steve: "Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash."

He ended the line gesturing back with his right hand. In the meantime, Clint turned to look at Tony and asked him

Clint: "Can you give me a lift?"

And Tony, while nodding, answered

Tony: "Right. Better clench up Legolas."

Then he walked to him, grabbed him and flew up in the sky. Steve wasn't over yet, as he looked at Thor and said

Steve: "Thor, you got to try to bottleneck that portal. Slow them down. You got the lightning. Light the bastards up."

After that Thor swung his hammer and took off, while Logan looked weird at Steve and asked

Logan: "Did you just curse?"

But Steve, ignoring his remark, continued with the orders, now addressing Natasha and the Canadian

Steve: "Us three, we stay here on the ground. We keep the fighting here."

Then he turned around, calling out the green giant

Steve: "And Hulk?"

Hulk turned sharply to look at his right, down at the Captain, who after a second raised his right arm, pointing up with his forefinger, and simply said

Steve: "Smash."

The Hulk was very pleased with the order received, as he smiled widely before jumping far off, his roar echoing in the distance. Logan moved his gaze from the leaping giant to Steve again and asked

Logan: "Did Boy-scout just curse, or my ears finally left me?"

Steve rolled his eyes as he said to the both of them

Steve: "C'mon, let's move, we still got people on the streets that need help."

As they took off running, Logan did one last remark

Logan: "This conversation isn't over, Rogers."

The three heroes ran for a bit, trying to look for civilians to help, but before they could advance further a large group of Chitauri soldiers detached from the buildings' walls and circled them rapidly, drawing out their staffs. Cap, Nat and Logan formed a small circle as they faced the aliens and got ready. Logan popped out his claws, Natasha drew her guns, and Steve tightened the straps of the shield with a yank. Suddenly, a deep and loud rumble could be heard up in the sky. Everyone turned to look up as, two seconds later, a huge lightning bolt crashed on the Chrysler building, electricity cursing throughout the skyscraper's length, breaking all of the windows. Then the same lightning changed direction, hitting the portal and all the giant monsters coming out of it. It was obvious that the god of thunder was behind that majestic and devastating attack. The heroes' attention was brought back to the fight at hand as one of the alien foreigners yelled out of rage and tried to shoot at Steve, but the latter merely lifted his shield up and parried the blast, sending it back and hitting the shooter square in the face. The whole group yelled and started to attack the three heroes, who ran towards the aliens and started taking them out. Steve punched left and right like a boxer while deflecting hits with his shield, Natasha alternated the gunshots to kicks to staff hits as she stole one from them, all the while Logan just slashed left and right like a madman. Arms and legs flew in the air as Logan used his metal claws to slash all the aliens he saw. At one point, after taking out another, he said out loud sarcastically

Logan: "All of these aliens, and it's not even the Fourth of July."

Then he avoided a staff being swung at him from his left and slashed in that direction before plunging his six claws into the alien's chest, pushing him forward. In the meantime Natasha, in the back, used her scissor move to bring down another Chitauri, then electrified him in the face, knocking him down. After that she looked up in Logan's direction and asked out loud

Natasha: "Did you just make a joke about Independence Day?"

Logan lifted the alien above his head by using his still plunged claws, and then threw them away against a car, denting it. After that another alien used his staff to try to put the Canadian in a tight chokehold, with Logan grabbing the staff and resisting the hold as best as he could. He looked on his left at Natasha and asked with a surprised and strangled tone

Logan: "You watched Independence Day?"

Then he positioned his left fist under the alien's arm and popped his claws out, piercing the arm from side to side, with the foreigner yelling in pain and reducing his strength, which gave Logan the opportunity to lift the staff off him, turn around and slash their face with his right hand claws. Then he looked to his right to Natasha, as she shot another Chitauri in the face with her dual pistols, who turned to look at him and stated as a matter of fact

Natasha: "Everyone's watched Independence Day."

In the meantime Steve threw his shield, which hit four enemies' faces before returning to him, then he turned to look at them and, surprised, said out loud

Steve: "What does the Independence Day celebration have to do with this?"

Then he turned around and deflected an energy blast coming straight at him, before taking off running towards them and starting to fight again, pushing them off the ledge of the bridge they were on, landing on the street. Logan, while fighting, smirked and said to the redhead

Logan: "Grandpa just proved you wrong, Romanoff."

And Natasha, while fighting against another Chitauri who wanted to grab her, replied right away

Natasha: "Give me time, he'll watch it."

But then the alien punched her, making a cut on her lip, and effectively grabbed her and slammed her against a car hood. Then they grabbed their staff and tried to stab her with the blade on top. But Natasha avoided it and used her legs to put the alien in a chokehold and, when they stood up, she used her right gauntlet to electrify them in the nape. The shock caused the alien to be disoriented, and the redhead used that fraction of time to grab the alien staff and shoot them dead. In the meantime, an alien came up behind Logan's back, while he was tending at another one in front of him, and stabbed him deep in his side. Logan yelled out in pain as even the alien in front of him stabbed him in his right pectoral. Natasha noticed he needed help, so she shot the one behind Logan's back, making him drop the staff on the ground. Logan's wound started to heal already, while rage surged through him as he, roaring out loud, used his right hand claws to break the staff in his chest in two and to decapitate the alien in front of him, whose head fell down with a disgusting thud. There was another thud behind Natasha, as she turned around sharply, ready to shoot at another alien, just as Logan turned around with all his six claws popped out, without even taking out the blade from his chest. But upon noticing that it was just Cap, who in the meantime raised a bit the shield just in case, a panting Natasha dropped the staff down while Logan retracted his claws and started to take the blade out of his chest. As the staff was now down, Steve walked forward as Natasha sat down on the edge of the car and, while looking down and still panting, she said to him

Natasha: "Captain, none of this is going to mean a damn thing if we don't close that portal."

She ended the line as she, Steve and Logan looked at the deep blue portal up in the sky. The soldier's reply came right after

Steve: "Our biggest guns couldn't touch it."

And Natasha answered back as an idea formed in her head

Natasha: "Well, maybe it's not about guns."

Both Steve and Logan turned to look at her weirdly, not yet knowing what the spy was up to. Then Logan and Steve deduced what she wanted to do: get up there and find another way to close that portal. While Steve looked in front of them at the aliens approaching them, Logan looked up at the flying Chitauri's and understood right away how the redhead was planning to go up there. So, when Steve said to her

Steve: "If you want to get up there, you're going to need a ride."

Both Logan and Natasha said at the same time

Natasha: "I got a ride."

Logan: "She got a ride."

They exchanged a look, and she sent him a faint smirk before letting the staff fall on the ground and walking to the other side of the bridge, near the ledge. Then she said to the Captain

Natasha: "I could use a boost though."

Logan watched as Steve walked a few steps behind, getting ready, and asked

Steve: "Are you sure about this?"

To which the spy, all the while glancing up a few times, replied with

Natasha: "Yeah. It's gonna be fun."

Then she didn't waste any more seconds as she ran at full speed and used the car beside the Captain as a leverage to jump on Cap's shield, which she used as a leverage to jump up, thanks to Steve's boost, and grab one of the flying speeders of the Chitauri soldiers. Logan stood beside Steve, on his left. Both of the men looked up as she went literally flying up in the sky, both of them having impressed and transfixed expressions on their faces. As they still had their gazes pointed up, Logan commented

Logan: "Redheads, huh?"

But then an energy blast came hitting Logan's left shoulder, making him cry out in pain briefly, and making him grab his shoulder. Steve instinctively put a hand on his other shoulder, instantly checking out if he was badly injured, but the Canadian's nod reassured him that it was nothing bad. Logan removed his hand, revealing the burned piece of suit's fabric with a few holes in it, showing the now regrown skin underneath. The two heroes raised their heads to look at the swarm of aliens heading their way, then they looked at each other and, after exchanging a nod, they took off running towards the huge group. Logan roared in an animalistic way as he jumped far, launching himself on one of the Chitauri soldiers while stretching his arms out and keeping his claws aimed forward. He landed on a foreigner, plunging all his claws in their chest, killing them instantly, while Steve pushed hard one of them with his shield, then he threw it and hit many aliens with it before the round object returned back. Then Logan and Cap exchanged a look, and the Canadian ran towards him and jumped while extending his hand, which Cap quickly grabbed and, using his strength, swung Logan against a group of aliens, which were promptly butchered by the Canadian. The two heroes worked as a team, fighting as one, with Cap punching relentlessly and throwing his shield, which after killing a few aliens ended up in Logan's hands. He deflected an energy blast coming his way, then swiped away the extraterrestrial out of his feet before jumping up and using his right hand claws to puncture the alien's head. After that he swiftly turned around and threw the shield at more enemies, it bounced off many heads before getting back in the Captain's hands. Logan couldn't explain what that feeling was, but he had the sensation that they already did this some other time in the past. Suddenly they heard the noise of thrusters coming their way, Logan lifted briefly his gaze and spotted Iron Man himself heading their way. The millionaire blasted a few Chitauri soldiers away before landing on the ground and shooting a beam at Cap's shield, which he promptly used to deflect the energy and kill some other aliens, before arriving at Logan's claws, which he crossed in front of him. The energy focused on the metal made it overheat and, when it became unbearable, Logan swatted it away, producing a heat blast that blew away all the aliens around them. The three of them exchanged a nod and Stark flew away. Logan looked down at his glowing, overheated metal claws, then he looked forward and noticed another swarm of enemies heading their way. He glanced at his right at Steve, with whom he exchanged a nod and then, looking forward, he smirked and said

Logan: "More pigs ready to be butchered. C'mon!"

Logan and Steve took off running towards the extraterrestrials, ready to send them back where they came from, with a battle roar released by the Canadian. Together, Logan and Steve were unstoppable: they kicked, punched, slashed and cut through everything relentlessly, with Logan using Cap's shield as a leverage to jump on top of the Chitauri soldiers, and Steve using the Canadian's strength to pass the shield amongst one another as it bounced on the enemies' faces.

Logan then heard something, a rumbling noise, like the engine's ones, and as an alien was about to shoot him from the distance, that Chitauri was shot first in the head. Logan turned to look at them, then looked at his far left and saw where the bullet came from: the US army was there. The Canadian looked at the man who killed the alien, and was surprised to see none other than General Thunderbolt Ross with his uniform, his beret, and a fuming Desert Eagle in his hand. Logan looked at the general, remembering all too well the last time they met, and he also now remembered why he didn't trust the government. But, nonetheless, Logan knew the meaning of gratitude, so he looked at the man who protected him with respect, the two exchanging a nod that carried more meaning than what a thousand words ever could. He heard the general yell at his soldiers

Ross: "Soldiers! Protect these men! Let's send these bastards where they came from and take back our city!"

Even though he would never admit that, Logan felt spurred by Ross' words. He exchanged a nod with Steve and then the two got back into action, fighting anything coming their way alongside the army. Steve threw his shield, that bounced off an alien's head and ended up in Logan's hands once again, and he used it to deflect the energy blasts coming his way. But, just as he was doing this, a Chitauri tackled Steve on the ground and then tried to stab his face with their staff, but the super soldier grabbed it and struggled to resist as much as he could. Logan's instincts warned him that Steve was in danger and, as he turned to look at his left, he noticed the alien was about to stab him. While still deflecting energy blasts, he mumbled to himself

Logan: "Oh, screw this..."

Then he swiftly threw the shield at the alien, the metal disc embedding into the Chitauri's flesh, making the extraterrestrial yell in pain and lose their strength just enough to grant Rogers the chance to move the staff away and hit the alien, sending them dead on the ground. In the meantime, Logan ran fast towards the Chitauri soldiers that were shooting at him, avoiding the energy blasts and popping out his claws. He then jumped up and launched himself at them with a loud roar. After plunging and killing the first one, he got up and rolled on the ground so that he could avoid other blasts, then he got up and used his claws to slash the leg of one of them, and then he plunged his left hand claws in his face, killing them instantly. After that he dealt with the last one that was shooting at him by throwing them a staff that lied on the ground, impaling the alien that thrashed in pain. Logan put an end to their suffering by cutting his head off in one swift movement. After that he turned his head to look at Steve, who nodded in appreciation before a communication arrived

Clint: "Captain, Logan, the bank on 42nd past Madison. They've cornered a lot of civilians in there."

And Cap replied right away

Steve: "We're on it."

He picked up his shield and, with a nod, encouraged Logan to follow him, and the Canadian answered with a nod as he started following Steve towards the bank.

Dozens of civilians - men, women and children - were being held hostage by a group of Chitauri soldiers from the balcony inside. The aliens were keeping their staffs aimed at them. The people were clearly scared, terrified, and even more so when one of the aliens turned around and, while having his shooting gauntlet in his left hand, with his right hand he grabbed from one of his pockets a rectangular, metallic object and activated it. The strange device started to emit a regular, high-pitched sound while the little wheel on top of it started to turn. But suddenly Captain America emerged through the window and gave a fast look at his surroundings. Just as he saw the glowing and beeping metal device, he understood what that thing was: a time bomb. He swiftly threw his shield at the alien's head, making them fall on the ground, their helmet falling on the ground just as the device, still beeping, the wheel still turning, and the lights still glowing. The other Chitauri's, as soon as they noticed the man in the red, white and blue uniform, turned around and aimed their staffs at him and shot a couple of energy blasts at him, but Steve jumped on the side, behind a fallen wooden table, before he could be hit. Just then even Wolverine jumped inside the room from the window with his claws aimed forward and, with his classic roar, he plunged them in an alien's chest, then he slashed their face a couple of times, killing them. The other Chitauri was about to attack the Canadian, but Steve noticed it and kicked the table in that direction, hitting them before they could do anything. Then he charged forward and jumped over it, he punched hard the alien in the stomach, making them lower their torso, giving Steve the opportunity to put his left arm around their neck and breaking it in a swift motion, with the alien yelling in pain before being thrown over the railing by the super soldier. The civilians were taken by surprise, as they screamed in fright due to the falling alien. The crowd moved so that the extraterrestrial would fall on the floor, and not on their heads, and once the Chitauri touched the ground they died instantly. Right after, Steve yelled at the people there

Steve: "Everyone! Clear out!"

But in the exact moment he finished that sentence, a Chitauri grabbed him from behind, using their claws to rip off Cap's mask. Logan turned to his right and saw the commotion, so he jumped into action by piercing the alien's head from side to side. As the alien's purple blood stained the wall, Logan heard the other Chitauri knocked out before by Steve that was about to shoot his energy blasts, but the Canadian reacted quickly by putting himself in front of Cap, taking from the Chitauri three blasts: one on his abdomen, one on his left pectoral, and the last on the right side of his face, the latter burning a part of his mask, revealing one of his eyes. The Canadian growled and screamed in pain at the burning sensation on his skin, with Steve that, reacting quickly, grabbed his shield from the ground and went to protect his teammate. But the super soldier noticed that the Chitauri had stopped shooting, and that the high-pitched beeping sound coming from the device got even higher and rapid. The Chitauri noticed it too, they quickly let the gauntlet fall on the ground as they hastily tried to grab the device. Cap acted quickly, grabbing the collar of Logan's costume and pulling him to the windows. The Canadian recovered from the pain, his wounds already starting to heal. But then he turned around and saw the alien about to throw the grenade at them. Cap managed to jump and use his shield as a protective turtle shell, but Logan wasn't so fast, as the device exploded before it could be thrown, and both Cap and Logan flew outside the building, landing not so graciously on a pair of cars, denting them, the Canadian even breaking it with his body weight.

Groaning in pain, Steve got down from the car roof, descending on the ground. Then he looked at his surroundings. He saw the people running out of the bank, safe, he saw the firefighters assisting the injured ones, the US soldiers still firing against the aliens. Right then and there, Steve couldn't help but ask himself if they were going to make it, if they were enough to withstand the immense force that came from the outer space, if they could have succeeded in helping all of those people. As he asked himself all of this, he heard a grunt nearby. He turned to his right and saw Logan on top of the car, even if it would probably be more correct to say inside of the car, since he practically broke the roof and crashed inside of it. Steve wasted no time in walking over to the car, then he opened the door and found Logan lying down and groaning in pain, as his injuries were almost fully healed. His mask was a lot more damaged, and his suit was covered in more burned spots. When his cuts and bruises were all fully healed, he turned to look at Steve and said

Logan: "No need to worry, Grandpa, I heal very fast."

Steve rolled his eyes with a playful scoff leaving his mouth, which was sporting an amused grin. Logan sat up, still inside the car, and leaned on his left hand as he ripped off his hood, since at this point it was pointless. Then Steve lend him a hand and pulled him out of there. After that Logan eyed Steve up and down and asked him

Logan: "Are you okay?"

Steve had a small appreciative smile as he nodded and replied

Steve: "Don't worry, just a couple of bruises."

Then the two of them turned their heads and looked at the city before them, all the civilians running and looking for help, all of those innocent lives threatened to be taken away. Logan watched those people afraid of dying, afraid of losing the ones they loved, he saw fathers helping their daughters, mothers helping their sons, husbands and wives tending to each other, and right then the Canadian felt truly alone. He knew deep down that he had truly no one. Not since that day. He had almost forgotten how did it feel to care about someone, and have that someone caring for you. His solitude wasn't something he was happy about, but he could not take that risk anymore. And so he drowned, or at least tried to drown, his sorrow in the bottle. He looked at all of those helpless people and voiced his worries to Cap

Logan: "All of these people...how are we going to save them, Steve?"

Steve turned to look at him with a bit of surprise in his voice: it was the first time he called him with his first name since a long time. The surprise vanished quickly, as he diverted his gaze back to the people and answered him

Steve: "I don't know. But I do know this, Logan..."

Both of them turned to look at each other in the eyes as Cap continued

Steve: "As long as we'll stay together, we'll have a chance. Are you with me?"

Logan, after a few moments, gave a decisive nod to the Captain and said

Logan: "I am."

The two men didn't waste any more time as they took off again to take care of other aliens, but most of all to protect the people of New York City. It was their job, to use their gifts and to put their lives at risk in order to ensure that others could keep their own.

As Cap and Logan were occupied slaying one alien after the other, they heard a loud grumble mixed with crashing sounds, so they looked up and saw one of those giant worms coming out of a building, making a huge hole and causing an immense amount of debris and huge fragments of glass to fall down on the streets. In its course, the worm destroyed a flying Chitauri speeder, on top of which there were an alien soldier and the god of thunder. When the flying vehicle was destroyed, Thor fell down in the direction of Cap and Logan, the latter using the car beside him as leverage to jump as high as he could, effectively grabbing the god and attenuating a bit the fall. After getting up with a groan, Thor lend a hand to Logan and helped him up, giving him a thankful nod. After that, Cap walked to the pair and addressed the god

Steve: "Thor, any news from up there?"

Thor moved his gaze to the Captain and replied

Thor: "They keep coming out. They will not stop until we close that portal."

Logan shrugged slightly his head as he commented to the two

Logan: "Now E.T. is really starting to piss me off."

Both Cap and Thor ignored the Canadian's remark for the moment, as the star spangled man turned from looking at the portal to gaze at his teammates, saying with a resolute tone

Steve: "We need to protect these people on the streets: there's too many Chitauri's down here. We might need your help for this, Thor."

The god nodded and said

Thor: "Then let's go to battle, my friends."

The three team members got ready to run towards the other aliens that were swarming the street in front of them, standing one beside the other, forming a line. Steve tightened his shield's straps on his arm, Logan cracked his neck on the side and popped out his six claws, and Thor rolled his mighty hammer in his hand with a war face on. Then they took off yet again. They ran with no fear towards the visitors from outer space that were threatening their planet, their home. The group of aliens was big, but it didn't matter to them at all as they attacked: Steve by using his shield's edge to hit an alien's face, Thor by swinging his hammer down on another's head and smashing them down on the ground, and Logan by darting forward and impaling another one in the chest as he snarled like a beast. The three of them worked in perfect sinch, killing aliens one after the other and helping each other. At one point both Steve and Thor turned, Cap left and Thor right, and threw their respective weapons at the extraterrestrials, while Logan also turned and slashed another alien coming towards the group. Both the hammer and the shield bounced off of many enemies before returning back to their respective owners. Just as Steve and Thor got back their weapons, another Chitauri behind them, beside Logan, got up and grabbed tightly their staff. As they were about to shoot, Logan pierced their right side with his left hand claws, and Cap turned around sharply to punch the alien in the face, while Thor stepped forward to his left and swung Mijolnir to another enemy. Steve used the hard surface of his shield to hit a Chitauri, sending them back, while Thor was swinging his hammer left and right, and Logan kept slashing enemy after enemy with no mercy. But, as Steve was still fighting, he was hit in the abdomen by an energy blast, the push from said blast was sufficent to make him fall face first on the ground and his shield fell from his grasp. Logan turned his head around sharply upon hearing the pained groan Cap released, and was quick to slash the alien's face in front of him and ran towards the American, kneeling down to assist him in any way he could. Even Thor noticed the commotion, as well as the other group of aliens that were shooting at his two teammates, so he acted quickly and used his hammer to hit the silver car that was right in front of the whole group, sending it tumbling forward until it crashed them all, then he turned around and threw Mijolnir at other aliens far from them. After that, Logan stood up and he and the god helped Steve raise himself on his feet, then the Asgardian said to the star spangled man, who was holding his injured and bleed-tainted stomach in pain

Thor: "Are you ready for another bout?"

And Cap, while panting from both exhaustion and the faint yet still present pain, replied

Steve: "What, are you getting sleepy?"

Thor glanced briefly at him before extending his hand and calling back his loyal hammer. Even Logan had to admit he was starting to feel a little tired and, while panting a little, commented

Logan: "I'm never gonna watch Alien the same way as before..."

Both Thor and Steve turned to look weirdly at the Canadian, who noticed the confusion on both of their faces and, raising an eyebrow in question, asked to the American

Logan: "Are you serious? Not even that one? What have you done all this time apart from staying on a bench while feeding pigeons?"

Steve shook his head while puffing out air in frustration at the Canadian's jokes as he turned around and started walking towards the next incoming group of Chitauri from the sky. But then they heard her

Natasha: "I can close it."

It was none other than Natasha, saying what was with no doubt the best news of the day. She continued right away

Natasha: "Can anybody copy? I can shut the portal down."

Distress was evident in her face as Cap, wasting not even a second, said to her while bringing his right hand close to the communicator.

Steve: "Do it!"

But then another voice was heard

Tony: "No, wait."

And Steve, not understanding why the billionaire would say something like this, looked up at the general direction he thought Stark was located and said

Steve: "Stark, these things are still coming."

Then Tony explained the reason

Tony: "I got a nuke coming in. It's gonna blow in less than a minute."

And, after a few seconds, he finished

Tony: "And I just know where to put it."

Every member of the team understood what Tony's plan was: send the nuke through the portal, destroy whatever there was on the other side, and finish that off for good. But there was a problem...the other side was outer space. There was no way to tell if Stark could actually come back in time before the explosion reached him. It was practically a suicide mission, one only a crazy man could dare to try, and that man was Tony Stark. Steve now started to see Tony for the hero he was, the exact kind of man that was now making the sarcrifice play, laying down on a wire to ensure everyone else could crawl over him. Trying to dissuade him, Steve said with a grim expression on his face

Steve: "Stark, you know that's a one-way trip."

But Tony's answer never came back.

After a few seconds, the three heroes raised their heads to look at a flying Tony, in his hands the nuclear missile that was probably meant to destroy New York City, as he started to go up more and more, helping himself even with his front thrusters.

They kept their gazes up as Iron Man headed straight for the open portal.

Logan looked at him and saw a man that, despite having no powers and almost none chance of survival, was more than willing to sacrifice himself even for people that hated him. A few days prior, Logan would have never even dared to try something like this, as he was convinced that people that hated him simply for being different didn't deserve any consideration, even less his sacrifice. He would call it merely a waste of time. He thought he had better things to do. But now, seeing that man risking it all for a city that was famous for being ungrateful to vigilantes and heroes alike, that made the Canadian truly reflect on his actions and convictions. Maybe he was wrong all along. And maybe, just maybe, Fury was right: maybe he could be more than a savage killing animal.

When Stark flew through the portal, everyone could take breath of relief. The city was safe from the explosion. But that moment of relief was short lived, as now a new concern dwelled in all the heroes' minds: was he gonna make it?

They waited and waited anxiously for the man in the suit of armor to come out of the portal. As they were looking up, Logan noticed the many Chitauri soldiers coming their way and, just as he was about to pop out his claws, all of them suddenly just collapsed on the ground. The commotion drew the attention of Thor and Steve as well, as the purple lights shining on the aliens' armors just shut off. Another noise in the distance caught Logan's attention as he looked up and saw one of the giant flying worms falling on its back on top of a pair of buildings. The three heroes looked at each other and understood: Tony made it, he saved New York, and much possibly the whole world. Now it was just a matter of if he was gonna make it back through the portal.

They moved their gazes back up in the sky and anxiously waited. They waited and waited, but nothing was happening. And, when through the portal the three men could see the nuke's explosion just as they could hear its muffled sound, they looked at each other again, and knew what they had to do if they didn't want the explosion to reach the city. Looking back up, Steve said to Natasha with a small, pained tone

Steve: "Close it."

Moments after, the intense blue energy ray shooting up in the sky, that was holding the portal open, was shut off. Right after that, the portal started to rapidly close, as the orange-red light coming from the explosion was lighting up the edges of the space gate. The three heroes lowered their heads to pay respect to a man not always loved, nor deemed a true hero by many people, that now just proved everyone wrong with that heroic, final act of bravery. He did not have powers, but he was determined to use his gifts to redeem himself and make a world a better place. Maybe this was what meant to be a hero. And Logan learned it from Tony.

But then...

Just when all hope was lost...

Tony Stark, Iron Man, came out of the last remaining space of the portal. All three of them looked up with happy smirks on their faces, as Steve said with an impressed tone

Steve: "Son of a gun."

With Logan that, at the same time, said

Logan: "Son of a bitch."

He made it. Tony made it. He saved the world from an extraterrestrial threat and made it out alive.

He fell...

And fell...

Faster by the second...

At this point the concern manifested itself again in the heroes' minds: what was happening? And did Tony actually make it alive?

With no one else capable of flying, Thor commented out loud

Thor: "He's not slowing down."

He then grabbed the leather lace of his hammer and swung it fast, getting ready to rescue the falling man. But, just when he was about to take off, a loud roar echoed in the air as none other than the Hulk came in with a huge leap and grabbed Tony in the air in his left hand. The green giant used his right one to grab onto a building, sliding down to attenuate the speed of the fall, then jumped down and turned in mid air, while circling the man with his huge arms in protection. He landed on a red car on top of the bridge before ending up on the ground, sliding on the street. He raised a bit the man in the suit of armor, then he let him land on the ground beside him with a little thud. Logan, Steve and Thor ran closer to check on Stark. Thor exchanged his right grip on the hammer with his left grip as he reached the man on the ground and turned him around. Steve asked while also kneeling down

Steve: "Is he breathing?"

Thor ripped off the metal faceplate of Tony's suit and stood up, as the Hulk was also still kneeling down on the other side of the Captain, while Logan was standing right beside him.

Tony was there, laying on the ground with his eyes closed.

Steve got more near in order to check if Tony was still breathing...

But he couldn't hear him breathing.

As the Hulk stood up, Steve stayed there, kneeling on the ground in front of the man he called selfish, the man he accused of not being a true hero, a man that just sacrificed his life to ensure that every person on Earth could continue living their peaceful life.

Remorse. That's what the Captain felt in that moment. Remorse for not having the time to get to know Tony better. And Logan was feeling the same way. Apparently a rich man in a suit of armor could have taught him a thing or two about redemption and doing the right thing. Logan then heard something...

Something curious...

A faint noise...

Almost imperceptible...

A heartbeat...

Then another...

As Logan checked from where that was coming, or rather from whom, he widened a bit his eyes and called for the others' attention

Logan: "Boys, I think he's-"

But, before he could say anything else, the Hulk roared loudly, startling Logan and waking up Tony, who released a scream of fear at the sudden noise. Apart from the fright felt by the sudden sound, Logan clutched his ears in pain since, due to his heightened sense, he heard the roar tenfold. The billionaire's scream caught the attention of Steve, who was visibly relieved by the fact that Tony was actually alive. Then, Hulk roared again in the air, even louder, prompting the Canadian to mumble to himself

Logan: "You stupid Shrek rip-off asshole..."

After the roar subsided, Tony exclaimed disoriented

Tony: "What the hell?"

As Thor looked with curiosity and admiration - and a smirk - at the strength showed by the mortal, Tony looked a bit at his surroundings before asking to the group

Tony: "What just happened? Please tell me nobody kissed me."

At that, Logan couldn't contain the smirk and the sarcastic comment

Logan: "Oh, I'm sure Steve was thinking about it."

Both Steve and Tony gave a brief chuckle at his comment. Then Steve looked in the distance, admiring the peace the city was now drowned into, and answered to Tony's question with a last pant leaving his mouth

Steve: "We won."

After that even Tony exhaled with relief. Then he said with exhaustion, while raising a bit his right forearm

Tony: "All right, yay! Hooray, good job guys!"

He then let his arm fall on the ground in exhaustion, before continuing

Tony: "Let's just not come in tomorrow. Let's just take a day. Have you ever tried shawarma?"

Thor, Steve and Logan all chuckled heartedly at his nonchalant sarcasm, as Tony continued as nothing was happened

Tony: "There's a shawarma joint about two blocks from here. I don't know what it is, but I want to try it."

Logan shrugged and said to him

Logan: "As long as it's still intact and you're paying, then I'm in."

Then Thor, as he was looking at the Stark Tower, where presumably Loki still was, said to the group

Thor: "We're not finished yet."

Tony, Steve and Logan looked at the god, understanding right away what he meant and, after a few seconds, Stark said

Tony: "And then shawarma after."

Loki was still in the tower. Still groaning in pain for the beat down he got from the Hulk, and also from the huge damage his pride and ego got from the "dull creature" calling him "Puny god". He was currently still trying to crawl away from the place, but only managed to reach the penultimate step up the stairs with his left hand and pull himself to lean on the steps. Then he felt something was off, so he slowly turned around and saw the whole team, The Avengers, standing tall before him in line: Tony, Hulk, Steve, Natasha with the scepter, and Logan in the back, with Clint kneeling in front of them and aiming his bow and arrow to the god of mischief.

Loki, who was sporting a cut on his right eyebrow, one on the bridge of his nose and one on his bottom lip, said while turning himself to face the group of heroes

Loki: "If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now."

The Hulk grunted in annoyance as the whole group didn't break their gazes off of him, with Logan smirking satisfied.
