CHAPTER ELEVEN:
YOU WERE A MISTAKE

"I'M SORRY, BUT I HAVE to go. . ." Elaine said, pointing towards the door and quickly turning the knob and pushing the door open. The woman walked up to her, grabbing onto her wrist, making Elaine look back towards her, fear in her eyes. The woman slowly let go of her wrist.

"Sorry." The woman responded. "Please, we need to talk."

"Lady, I don't even know who you are!" Elaine snapped. "Get the hell away from my house."

"You shouldn't talk to the woman who gave birth to you like that." Elaine seemed to freeze. Her jaw and fist clenched as she turned towards the woman.

"Why not? The woman that gave birth to me abandoned me, and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me." Elaine muttered.

"That's because you were a mistake. You weren't supposed to happen." The woman answered. Elaine's mouth fell agape at her words, making the woman realize what she had just said. "Elaine, I didn't mean―︎"

"Stay the hell away from me." Elaine snapped. "And if I see you near me or my house again, I'm calling the cops." With that, Elaine quickly shoved herself inside, slamming her front door and locking it. She ran up the steps, entering the room and closing the door. She leaned against it, tears glossing over her eyes as a hand fell over her mouth. Tears fell down her eyes, making her let out soft sobs. She didn't even know why she was crying, she shouldn't care what the woman had to say, but when the words fell from her mouth that Elaine was a mistake, she couldn't help but believe them.

The next day passed by so quickly, that when the bell rang, she had been the last one sitting in there until her teacher grabbed her attention. She had quickly left the school building, deciding she would walk home. She knew that Stiles was going to go see Lydia who hadn't appeared at school all day, and she knew that she probably should've done the same, but she would wait for a few more hours so as to give her friend a few hours to rest. She walked to her house, stopping when she saw the same woman from the night prior sitting on the steps.

"You here to call me a mistake again?" Elaine hissed. The woman stood up, moving as Elaine moved past her, grabbing her house keys and placing the key in the lock.

"Elaine-"

"I thought I told you that if I saw you again, I would call the cops?" Elaine asked, turning the key and then pushing the door open. The woman opened her mouth to speak again, but Elaine quickly spoke first. "One of my best friend's dad is the sheriff, actually. And I have him on speed dial. So, I'll say it again. Get the hell away from my house, or I'll get your ass arrested." With that, Elaine gave the woman a sarcastic smile and shut the door in her face. Elaine put her keys back in her backpack, making her way up the steps and into her room. She put her bag on her bed, pulling out her phone and calling Stiles.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Stiles. Are you still at Lydia's?" Elaine questioned.

"I just left, actually. She's passed out so. . ."

"Oh, I was gonna see her after work. Which is why I'm calling. I can't exactly leave my house because there's this woman outside who won't leave me alone, and I need to quickly escape through my window so that she doesn't follow me and figure out where I work." Elaine spoke, smiling sarcastically.

"A woman outside?" Stiles questioned.

"Yeah, apparently she's my birth mother, which is absolute bullshit. Anyways, can you pick me up?"

"Be there in five." He quickly said before the call hung up. When he pulled up, Elaine was quick to jump from her window, letting out a hiss of pain as she landed directly on her feet, making her feet buckle from underneath her as the pain shot up from her feet and made it up to her shoulders before she managed to compose herself and get up, running to Stiles car and jumping in.

"Go!" She hissed, slouching in her seat until they made it out of sight from her house. She sat back up, finally buckling her seatbelt.

"You think she's telling you the truth?" Stiles asked, making Elaine raise an eyebrow at her. "I mean. . . I'm just saying. You don't know what your birth mother looks like―︎"

"Even if that is her, which that is a big if mind you, I want nothing to do with her. Just like she wanted nothing to do with me." Elaine mumbled, frowning slightly. Stiles glanced towards her before taking one hand off the steering wheel and placing it over Elaine's. The female glanced at him before down to his hand, turning her hand over and interlacing her fingers with his, ignoring the pounding of her heart in her chest.

After arriving at the clinic, listening to Dr. Deaton talk with Sheriff Stilinski about the possibility of what he saw at the video store where Jackson was attacked, and the thing flew by Lydia, traumatizing her for a day, it was time for the parent teacher conferences. Though, Elaine had mostly all A's, and didn't have to go, she decided she would in support of her brother. Her mother had picked her up, smiling at her.

"How was the clinic?"

"Good." She answered.

"You haven't heard from your brother, have you?" Melissa questioned, driving towards the school.

"No. He didn't show up at work." Elaine shook her head. Melissa nodded her head before glancing towards the daughter who was too busy looking out the window to notice her mother's look of concern.

"Sweetheart, are you alright?"

"Hmm?" Elaine hummed, turning towards her mother. "Oh, yeah, I'm fine." She gave her mother a small smile before they pulled up to the school. The two got out of the car, going from teacher to teacher, Elaine forcing herself to smile at Mr. Harris as she entered the chemistry classroom, before the two sat down.

Melissa pulled out her phone, dialing Scott's number only to get voicemail. "Where the hell are you? Get to the school now." When she hung up the phone, she offered the teacher a small smile.

"How about we get started?"

"Sure." Melissa smiled.

"Well, for one, Elaine is an excellent student. And has a high A in my class. She turns in all of her work on time, and participates in class when asked." Melissa smiled at Elaine, who couldn't help but smile back. "Scott on the other hand. . . Lately Scott's mind has been somewhere else, as has his body. Personally, I think it may have something to do with his home situation."

Elaine couldn't help but frown at this, Melissa copying her daughters actions. "Oh, well, personally, I'm not sure what you mean by home situation."

"Uh, specifically, the lack of an authority figure. . ."

"Yeah, I'm the authority figure, so. . ." Melissa spoke, Elaine looking down at her shoes awkwardly.

"Sorry. Allow me to clarify―︎I mean the lack of a male authority figure."

Elaine's already minimum respect for the teacher immediately went down the drain, making her jaw clench, watching from the corner of her eye as her mother looked down at her phone whilst saying, "Oh. Well, trust me, we're much better off without him in the picture."

"Well, does Scott feel the same way?" Mr. Harris asked.

"Yes." She nodded. "I think so."

"But he's going through some difficult changes. He just needs a little extra attention, a guiding hand through this crucial stage of his development." Mr. Harris spoke. Elaine's eyes seemed to widen as she looked up at the teacher. She glanced towards her mother before standing up, offering Mr. Harris a smile.

"Thank you, Mr. Harris. But, I believe we have to find my brother." Elaine spoke, pulling her mother up from the chair before pushing her out of the classroom. She glanced at her mother, who seemed both irritated and angry.

"Mom, are you alright?"

"I'm fine." Her mother gave her a sarcastic smile before giving her a kiss on the head. "Good job, sweetheart. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to find your brother and kill him." She walked out with her mother, watching as she talked to Scott's voicemail once again, before she walked towards Allison's parents. Elaine stood there, crossing her arms and raising her eyebrows when she saw Allison and Scott exit Allison's vehicle, both Allison's parents and Melissa walking over to the two, having a furious conversation with them.

Elaine stood there for a moment before she caught sight of Stiles' dad. She bit her lip before deciding to walk up to him, telling him about the woman that had appeared at her house two days in a row. "Sheriff Stilinski, can I talk to you for a second?"

He turned towards the female, recognizing Elaine and giving her a small smile, nodding his head. "Of course. What's wrong, Elaine?"

"Well―︎" However, she was cut off by the screams of some of the parents. The duo quickly looked around, trying to find the source that was causing people to scream. Elaine stayed by the Sheriff's side, frowning slightly as she continued to look, not seeing anything. However, when she saw an animal run by, the Sheriff quick to usher people away, her eyes widened slightly. However, they widened even more when she saw a car about to back up. She quickly pushed Stiles' father out of the way just as the car had hit her, sending her to the ground.

She let out a groan, glancing towards the Sheriff to make sure he was alright, and watching as another of the parents made sure he was alright. That's when two gunshots went off, and the screaming stopped. Elaine glanced towards the sheriff before forcing her up and moving over to him. She kneeled down beside the man.

"Mr. Stilinski, are you alright?" The girl quickly asked, a hand on his shoulder as she looked at the man worriedly.

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." He waved her off.

"I didn't mean to push you so hard." Elaine frowned. "I was just trying to―︎"

"Elaine, I'm fine." The man assured her. "You're the one that got hit with the car, are you alright?" She ignored the throbbing that was happening on her left side and hip, clenching her jaw as she offered him a tight smile.

"I'm perfectly alright. No harm done." She assured, before helping the man to his feet.
