This situation seemed to be going from bad direction to worse one, since the German government now declared Steve and Sam as fugitives of the law from running off and even so by taking Bucky Barnes with them. (Y/N), on the other hand, was only seen as an accomplice, not having the other charges the men had. Even if she wasn't declared as an actual criminal, she was sure it was heading in that direction and it scared her.
To stay hidden from the police, they had found an abandoned warehouse where they could easily restrain Bucky in case he went all rampage again. Sam and (Y/N) were the ones keeping an eye on him, prepared to call for Steve if he woke up. So when (Y/N) heard unfamiliar groans from the semi-conscious man, she called out for the blond.
Once he joined them, they all stood in front of him defensively and waited for any sort of reaction. At first, Bucky groaned in pain due to his uncomfortable position, back hunched over and with his metal arm restrained by having a heavy amount of pressure on it.
"Steve," he firstly called out.
"Which Bucky am I talking to?"
"Your mom's name was Sarah," Bucky replied instead, a smile coming out with a chuckle. "You used to wear newspapers in your shoes."
"Can't read that in a museum."
"Just like that, we're supposed to be cool?" Sam stared at Steve like he had grown two heads. (Y/N) couldn't help but agree with him.
Steve didn't reply to that. Bucky must've known that something was not right, and so he asked carefully. "What did I do?"
"Enough."
"Oh, God, I knew this would happen," Bucky lowered his head in shame, his voice raspy from both exhaustion and anger. "Everything HYDRA put inside me is still there. All he had to do was say the goddamn words."
"Who was he?"
"I don't know."
"People are dead. The bombing, the setup. . .the doctor did all that just to get 10 minutes with you. I need you to do better than 'I don't know'."
Bucky paused, as if he was thinking his words through before answering back. "He wanted to know about Siberia. Where I was kept. He wanted to know exactly where."
"Why would he need to know that?"
"Because I'm not the only Winter Soldier."
Bucky then went on to explain how he was forced to retrieve a package than contained super-soldier serum ( he didn't specify from who and he looked pretty shaken up about it ) and how HYDRA used it for its advantage. They created approximately five new super soldiers with that sample, but it didn't work out that well. According to Bucky, they rebelled against the staff and killed them all ruthlessly.
"Who were they?" Steve asked the first question after Bucky had finished talking.
"The most elite death squad. More kills than anyone in HYDRA history. And that was before the serum."
Sam eyed him. "They all turn out like you?"
"Worse."
"Could the doctor control them if he wanted to?" (Y/N) asked next, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Enough."
"Said he wanted to see an empire fall," Steve recalled what the doctor had told him back then.
"With these guys, he could do it," Bucky began. "They speak 30 languages, can hide in plain sight. . .infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They can take a whole country down in one night, you'd never see them coming."
Sam let out a frustrated sigh before walking closer to Steve and (Y/N) as a way to gather them together. He lowered his volume enough so Bucky couldn't hear them, and the three huddled in a small circle to have a quiet conversation.
"This would have been a lot easier a week ago," Sam crossed his arms and eyed Bucky before removing his eyes from him.
"If we call Tony β " Steve started.
"No, he won't believe us."
"Even if he did β "
"Who knows if the Accords would let him help," (Y/N) muttered with a frustrated tone. She hated the Accords, she hated the doctor who was behind this all mess, and she hated the way the team was beginning to unravel before of this.
Silence followed her words. Sam and Steve both eyed her with caring eyes, watching to see how she was doing. They knew that she was in the middle of the crossfire since she had followed after them and not after Tony.
"We're on our own," Steve sighed defeated.
"Maybe not," Sam told him, a look of pride glimmering behind his eyes. "I know a guy."
The gears on (Y/N)'s head clicked. She instantly thought of two people who still hadn't chosen a side of the Accords or did not want to sign them. She caught Sam's eye and smirked, both already having new recruits in mind.
"I'll call Clint."
And so, after finding a burner phone in a convenience store near the warehouse, (Y/N) dialed Clint to fill him in with the situation. She knew it was bad to ask him to leave retirement and his family because of the fiasco, but he was one of the only people who would understand. What she didn't expect though, was that he easily agreed with no persuasion involved. He had stated that if the situation wasn't that bad, she wouldn't even be calling in the first place. (Y/N) agreed to his words, and so Clint agreed he'd find a way to break Wanda out of the compound and to bring in Sam's new recruit.
After ending the call, (Y/N) was about to go back and join the boys, but a massive headache interrupted her actions. Because of the excruciating pain, she closed her eyes and tried to brush the pain off. These headaches were coming in much more frequently since the Accords were announced, and she couldn't find an explanation as to why. Her only reasoning behind it was it being a consequence from all the stress, and she didn't want to dive too deep in that thought.
"(Y/N)?" a voice made her remove her hand off her forehead. She looked up and saw Steve eyeing her with a worried look, eyebrows furrowed.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," she cleared her throat to remain calm. "Yeah, I'm fine. What's up? Are we leaving?"
"In a few minutes," Steve responded to her question before he asked one of his own. "Look, I'm sorry."
(Y/N) couldn't help but frown at his apology. "Sorry? What for, Steve?"
"For dragging you into this," He began, his tone easily apologetic. "I know how much Tony means to you and the fact that I might've turned you both against each other is. . .I'm sorry."
"No, no, no," (Y/N) corrected him. She shook her head to emphasize on her words. "You didn't 'drag' me into anything. I decided to be on your side. I don't get why it's hard for him to know that."
"If there might've been another way to solve this, I would've chosen it," Steve told her.
"I know," she nodded. "Let's just hope this doesn't end up in another huge mess."

The plan was settled. The boys were driving to meet Sharon by the entrance of the German airport, where she would luckily have their gear and weapons. (Y/N), on the other hand, was handed the task to find Clint once he arrived in the city and take him to the location they all will be meeting in. This plan was used to assure Clint, Wanda and the new recruit got back to the meeting point without any interruptions, especially considering that they were known fugitives.
Once they parked in an empty floor of the parking lot, they waited for the other half of the team to arrive. Steve drove in just a few minutes late, driving a blue beetle that looked too small for him. Steve, Sam and Bucky got out of the car as well as the others, meeting up like it was established.
"Cap," Clint greeted first.
Steve extended his hand to shake it with his. "You know I wouldn't have called if I had any other choice."
"Hey, man, you're doing me a favor," Clint told him honestly. His eyes trailed back to Wanda behind him. "Besides, I owe a debt."
"Thanks for having my back."
Wanda shrugged at his words. "It was time to get off my ass."
Steve's eyes trailed over at the back of the van. "How about our other recruit?"
"He's rarin' to go," Clint replied and walked over toward the back door to slide it open. "Had to put a little coffee in him β "
The sound of the car door slamming open made the new recruit, also known as Scott Lang, to shot awake from his nap. He was startled and confused, not really knowing where he was.
"β should be good."
Scott, groggily, stood up from his seat and made his way out of the van. "What time zone is this?"
"Come on. Come on."
At the sight of the people in front of him, Scott's eyes widened in surprise. Mostly, his attention was drawn to one person in particular, coming forward to shake his hand as a formal greeting.
"Captain America!"
"Mr. Lang," Steve greeted back and was not that fazed by the man's enthusiasm.
"It's an honor," Scott said before he realized how much time he'd spent shaking Steve's hand. "I'm shaking your hand too long. Wow! This is awesome!"
He turned back to face Wanda to show off. "Captain America," he then realized who he was talking to. "I know you too. You're great!"
Wanda flashed him a genuine smile. (Y/N) and Sam on the other hand were watching the exchange with amusement, not being able to see Steve's face but knowing what kind of expression he had. (Y/N) already liked this Lang guy.
"Jeez," Scott unexpectedly placed his hands on top of Steve's biceps and squeezed before he dropped his hands. "Ah, look, I wanna say, I know you know a lot of super people, so. . .thinks for thanking of me."
Steve gave him a smile in reply.
"Hey, man!" Scott's attention was now on Sam.
"What's up, Tic Tac?"
"Uh, good to see you," Scott nervously said. "Look, what happened last time when I β "
"It was a great audition, but it'll never happen again."
"Wait," (Y/N) flickered her eyes between Scott and Sam, genuinely curious. "What happened last time?"
Scott's head snapped in the direction of her voice and his eyes widened like saucers. In a quick attempt to greet her, he raised his hand fast to do a typical salute, but ended up smacking his own forehead instead.
"Lieutenant! It's Lieutenant, right?" Scott rambled. "It's a huge honor."
(Y/N) couldn't help but smile at Scott's actions. "The honor is all mine. Just call me (Y/N)."
Scott still couldn't believe his luck. "So cool."
Steve was much more focused on the task in hand. His eyes were sharp and he faced Scott with a serious expression in his face. "They tell you what we're up against?"
"Something about some psycho-assassins?"
"We're outside the law on this one," Steve explained to him. "So if you come with us, you're a wanted man."
"Yeah, well, what else is new?"
Bucky, who had been by the car in silence this whole time, spoke up loudly. "We should get moving."
"We got a chopper lined up," Clint informed the others.
Before anyone else could react, an alarm started blaring throughout the entire parking lot of the airport. A masculine voice was speaking over the public speaker, announcing the same order in a loop in German. (Y/N) didn't have to listen twice to know what this meant.
"They're evacuating the airport," Bucky told the whole group.
(Y/N) immediately knew who. "Tony."
"Tony? As in Stark?" Scott asked with widened eyes, looking for someone who might answer.
Steve faced his teammates. "Suit up."
only two more chapters of this angst ( probably ) let's celebrate woo!
